MacBook pro over heating

MacBook Pro 17" laptop, i7 duo core processor:
I have my MBP well ventilated in an airconditoned environment, but the area around the MagSafe power and battery as well as on the bottom get extremely hot.
Any solutions?

When things happens we always have that tendency to try to express ourselves in a way that everybody can understand without using too much technical terms. In reality what happens is that the fan start to spin very fast triggering that annoying noise. You're right, it is an absurd resource hog. The problem is that I work with multimedia stuff using FCP and Flash. This issue never happened in the past. Having that spinning noise hanging around does make virtually impossible to do any type of decent recording. I want to express to the developers of these plug-ins that this is wrong and should be fixed. Maybe if enough people complain they'll do something about. In the end I am the one that will have to pay for a new drive if the one I have gets over used and dies prematurely. I removed the battery to test if that has something to do with it. I duno! Let's see how this issue develops. Thanks for the heads up EWW!

  • Early 2006 MacBook Pro Over Heat Findings

Just thought I'd publish a few findings on this topic. There are a lot of threads about MBPs running hot.
Background - 1.83 GHz Core Duo 15" MBP. Machine has always run pretty hot, but never shut down due to an overheat. After upgrading this machine with a Hitachi Travelstar 2.5" 500GB 7200 rpm drive and another 1/2 GB of RAM, I tried doing a ime Machine backup to an external drive (500 GB 2.5" USB 5400 rpm drive plugged into a hub). It got about 5-10 minutes into the backup when the computer just shut off. The machine didn't shut off doing normal tasks, but my wife had a couple of shutdowns when she was doing some movie editing (very large files), even prior to swapping out the original 80 GB hard drive. Initially I thought the RAM was defective or the power supply, but I put the original RAM and 80 GB drive back into the computer and was able to reproduce the shut down by copying many GB of files, or running Rember (RAM test SW), and even loading OS X in from a DVD.
I found two very helpful pieces of software: The widget 'iStatPro" and the System pref "Fan Control"
I watched the temperatures during the full Time Machine backup (376 total GB).The CPU temperature would get up to 250 F on transfers of very large files (like movies) or running Rember RAM tests. Anything where sustained CPU % utilization stayed up  above 80% or more for minutes at a time. It would just completely shut down.
I used the Widget "Fan Control" to set the Base fan speed level to 2800 rpm, set the lower temp threshold to 110F at that speed, and set the upper threshold temp to 160F where the fan would reach 6000 rpm.
I sat and watched a complete 376 GB Time Machine backup run, and a few times during the process the CPU utilization went to 90+% for several minutes - the same point it shut down before. This time it topped out at a CPU temp of about 230F and squeaked through. Most of the time during the backup the temp is only about 130-135 deg F when CPU utilization is down in the 20% or less range continuously.
Bottom line is that this model has a very low thermal margin. Over the years as files have gotten bigger (i.e.higher resolution movies), that margin was finally exposed. The control of the temperature trip points and lower threashold speeds helped it get through.
What I didn't get to the bottom of though was whether or not the heat sinking of the CPU is as good as it was when it was new. I didn't dig into that, and don't know how that heat sink is designed. There was nothing visibly weird looking just looking at the board with the top keboard cover assy off. There wasn't excessive dust in the machine.

I have a widget called iStatPro which is pretty cool. It tells you about 7 different temperatures inside, and gives you the speeds of both fans. And the system pref called Fan Control is great too. You can adjust the speeds such that they run faster at the cooler temperatures than the stock settings. You can also adjust the high end temperature down so that the fans are at max speed at a lower temperature than the stock settings. The penalty for all that is fan noise though. At 6000 rpm, those little fan blades make quite a whoosh. I fiddled around with the settings until Inhad a good balance between being fairly quiet when it was idling, and only going to full speed when it was really getting very hot.
I've been searching the Internet trying to find some info on the circuit board and the CPU location. If it's just soldered onto the logic board, the only way the heat gets out of it is thru the leads of the device and into the copper runs on the circuit board. Then the heat has to travel from there to a cold spot where the board mounts to the chassis. I don't know if it has any kind of heat sink on the COU or not. I didn't see a chip big enough on the top side of the board to be the CPU. I suspect it's on the bottom side of the board facing the cavity where the fan air blows past it....I just didn't have the wear withal to take that board out of there and look at it.
At least I know now though that if I'm going to be doing some really long stretches of high %CPU, it'll make it thru that if it only lasts a few minutes. Like I said, above, when it's idling or only copying small files that last only seconds, it stays pretty cool-cooler than it ran before because I set the minimum fan speed up to 2800 rpm from the stock 1500 rpm. And the temperature stays about 20 deg F cooler than it used to.

  • Macbook Pro over heat

    Hi All!
I bought a new mac book pro 2014 mid. It is working fine. But I am using the external monitor. When I connect the monitor and when I using two display, heat is increasing. It is so much heat. What is the reason for this issue?

Increased load on the MBP resources will create increased heat.  It becomes a question of how much and is it within acceptable limits.  You might install iStat menus:
    bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
Also open Activity Monitor to ALL PROCESSES and set CPU to display values from high to low.  This should allow you to identify those applications that are responsible for the heat increase.
    Ciao.

  • Older macbook pro is heating up fan not running?

My older macbook pro is heating up.  I believe the fan is not running?
    Thanks

First, I recommend you to reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If it doesn't work, I would start thinking about a hardware problem. To confirm this, insert the “Mac OS X Install Disc 1” that came with the Mac, hold the D key while your Mac is starting to start Apple Hardware Test and run an extended test. If you get an error at the end of the text, copy it here. You will have to take the computer to an Apple Store or reseller to get the Mac repaired

  • MacBook Pro getting heat

    Dear Friends
My Macbook pro gets heating only near the charging socket area,, I have attached the pic with marking.
    I use OS X yosemite.
Please give me to solve this.

Check both connections, the MBP and the charger for dirt and discoloration.  The pins in the charger connection are spring loaded so make certain they move freely.
    Run an Apple Hardware test:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257
Note hat an error free AHT is not definitive.

You only bought it four months ago, so it's still under warrantly.
Call Applecare or call your nearest Applestore to make an appointment. Tell them your mac has serious technical issues, describe them shortly.

  • Macbook Pro Retina Heat

    Hi.
I'm completely new to Mac and OSX but I'm fairly good with computers. Beening building PCs for years and know my way around Windows.
I'm a little concerned with my Macbook Pro Retina and its heat. I understand that its a slim computer and its going to get hot, but it doesn't seem like my fans are speeding up enough to keep the system cool. Even when I'm doing light loads on the processor (Ex. coding a website in TextMate) the system seems to be running fairly hot. Usually it runs around 70C when doing basic internet browsing and text editing. When watching YouTube it runs even hotter! (Around 100 ~ 120C)
The fans seem to max out at 2100 RPM during when it hits those peak temperatures. I opened up TF2 and it got even more hot, and the fans still only peaked at 2100 RPM.
Someone told me to download SMC Fan Control - however from what I can tell it is not completely compatible with OS X 10.8. It does let me set the fan speed however the system doesn't take over when the system is getting hot - at least thats all I can tell; chance are I'm completely wrong.
Anyways, is there something on the software side of things that I can do to increase the cooling of my system? I will probably be buying a cooling pad at some point but if I could increase the cooling more via software that would be great!

    Hi there,
What you have stated in regards to the temperatues and fan speeds is a little worrying in my honest opinion, let me explain why.
I have a MacBook Pro with Retina Display, the £1799 model (8gb RAM, 256 SSD), which i use at an elevated position, i bought a griffin stand (really nice actually, i would reccomend it).
I have had it a little over a month, my first 3 weeks with it have been a complete worry.
My rMBP runs between 46C - 60C whilst i'm browsing the internet etc, if i watch a youtube clip, it gets hotter - around 70C (it can get even hotter but it depends on the resolution of the vid) - fans are runing at around 2100 RPM when machine is at 50C ish..
However, when i run games or watch a 4k resolution vid on youtube or do anything that requires the processer to go insane it shoots way up to around 90C (highest i've seen it go is 97C), this scared the **** out of me, how can something get that hot and still be safe? it's 10C away from boiling point! The fans run at around 4000 RPM at this temperature.
I must have called Apple Care about 3 times a week to ask for advice, i was looking for someone to make me confident that this was normal, they told me to take it to a genius bar.
So off i went, the genius told me that he had tried to test it (about 5 times) but was unable to succesfully test the machine as apparently, whenever a new machine is released, there is a period when all the older testing software doesn't work properly (it kept crashing).
What i did find out was that another genius that walked past overheard us, he told me he was playing StarCraft II on it for hours yesterday and it got very hot, around the same temperatures of mine, he said it was perfectly normal as the processor is Ivy Bridge which just runs hotter then normal.
    He also said the following:
The fans can go up to a maxmimum of 6000 RPM, this to me meant that i was not pushing it to it's limit as the highest i've seen my fans go is around 5000RPM at 97C.
He simply said not to worry and i quote - "If the fans are running it's nothing to worry about, if they are not - that's the time to worry".
He also said that the system had an inbuilt feature that would shut down the system if it ever got too hot for the system to handle.
The general thing i have realised from my own searching around and visiting/calling apple is that the rMBP is thinner then other laptops and therefore, it will run hotter. The entire case is meant to be a heat sink and is supposed to get hot to help dissapate the heat.
I'm now confident that mine is not faulty - it feels like a weight has been lifted (i treat my rMBP like a newborn hah)
To me, based on everything i've learnt, i would say yours needs to be checked out ASAP, the temperatures are higher then mine and your fans are not operating as they should.
I really hope this helps mate, go and see a genius and get it sorted!
    All the best!
    Nick

i do under stand that batterys do charge but as i had no warning especial if this was going to happen
if as thay said this is normal as it was bourght from apple direct should thay have sent a letter or email as thay would have had my details warning me that this can randomly happen as in my case .
the battery in my opinion has exploded ref defonition and .
my consern is that this could have been alot worse and no warning even thay admited that it is normal

  • Strange problems on Macbook Pro over past year...

I'm about to do an erase and install after having numerous strange problems on my mid 2009 17" Macbook Pro (Leopard) over the past year, some of which I have opened threads for on these forums.
They are listed bellow to see if anyone wants to give their final two cents as to what is causing them. They may or might not be related.
    1) I recently found the "Unknown" user classifications at second from top in the user priveleges for the main Macintosh HD folder and "Local Work" – which is my main folder for work.

    4) Some proceses I've seen in the activity monitor that are possibly a little sketchy are as follows:
    - "netsessionmac1" ... Akamai playing about?
    - "TaskManagerDaemo" ... with "Root" user, ... sounds a bit vague and possible malware according to google?
    5) In Skype I get constant warnings of other computers trying to connect from Little Snitch and Virus Barrier. I get so many of them one after they other pausing skype that I can only use Skype with Little Snitch off. I can only use it late at night also as there seems to be more attempts being blocked in virus barrier during the day that I can't even get past the login:

I suppose your expanding battery problem could have caused some or all of these problems, but most of them sound like software issues.
If I were you I'd try a few things:
    1. boot from your snow leopard install disk and repair your startup disk with disk utility.
    2. repeat the repairs until no repairs are reported (the toilet paper principle).
    3. repair permissions again.
    4. if the problems persist, trash the preferences files for the misbehaving apps.
    5. if the problems persist, delete the misbehaving apps and reinstall them.
    6. it the shutoffs persist, try a PMU reset.
    7. a PRAM reset would probably be a good idea too.
    8. if none of that works, archive and reinstall.
there is a freeware utility called applejack that will also do most of this.
Details on all of these will be readily available with a google search.

  • How can I keep my MacBook Pro from heating up and crashing when I play Sims 3?

I have a MacBook Pro that is only about 9 monthes old. When I play Sims 3 on my computer it heats up very quickly. I can get about an hour of game play before the computer becomes slow and extremely hot. Then cetain parts of the screen turn white untill the whole screen turns white and a message appears saying something about an error happening. I am not sure if it has something to do with the computer heating up or if it's a EA problem. But if anyone has had a similar experience and knows how to fix it, that would be great. Also, any tips on how to keep my computer cool while playing games or watching movies would be great.
    Thank you!

Your computer is going to run hot while playing CPU/GPU intensive games - it should heat up and the fans should be noticably loud. As to why it's 'crashing' - can you post a kernel panic log? You may have some third-party kexts that are causing the problems.

  • Macbook pro 2011 heating issue

I have the 2011 Macbook pro. The temperature has always been a problem. If im running 1 program like safari it will normally be around 95 - 105 degrees. If i have a few apps open it goes up to about 150.
For some reason over the past few days wether i have an app open or not the temp sky rockets to 190 - 200. I have no idea what could be wrong. Maybe one of my fans have broken and 1 cant keep the computer cool by itself. If theyre are even 2 fans i have no clue.

Similar reports seem to point to issues when running a virtual OS through VMware or Parallels. See below.

  • Macbook Pro still Heating Up and faulty GPU

I've listed a similar problem a while back
This time it's a bit different.
My macbook pro (early 2008) just a month out of warranty, starts showing distorted video on the screen.
Turning it off and back on again just showed a distorted apple and the operating system refused to load.
After a few days I tried turning it on again and amazingly, it did. Though quite slower than before.
Regardless, I was happy to see that it started to work once more.
But now, It's been heating up too much.
The CPU makes it to 75 degrees (celcius) and the GPU is up to 81 degrees (celcius).
here's a screen of the iStat:
These temps were taken when running Finder and Chrome Browser ONLY(!).
The funny thing is the fans don't run any faster.
The Macbook Pro is elevated and there is plenty of air circulation (plus an airconditioned room).
I don't know if an AASP would take care of this (with no charge) even when out of warranty...
    Any ideas?

There is a known problem with the Nvidea 8600M GT chipset in the Late 2007 and Early 2008 MBPs. This Repair Extension Program (REP) covers the repair at no cost to you for four years from date of purchase:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
You must have an Apple Store or AASP test the computer to see it it qualifies. You can't do the testing yourself. People report the turnaround time for the repair to be one to three working days, often same day. You get a new logic board.

  • MacBook Pro 2GHz heat problems

    Hello!
I just bought a MacBook Pro 15" 2GHz non multi-touch (before 1 week). I was so frustrated for not being able to buy it easy from my country but the pain was worthy I thought. Now after some work with it I notice it is very hot. I downloaded iStatPro I looked at the temperatures.
The processor usually stays at 55 to 60 celsius. When I do normal work it sometimes came up to 80!?!
When I am at my desk browsing I notice that the wood (or other stuff I don't know the english word) of my desk is being deformed because of the temperature.
I tried contacting the services via email but no one answered me in a couple of days.
So I have these questions I like being answered.
What is the normal idle temperature?
What is the normal operating temperature?
Is there a way to fix the problem in service or other way?
And is there a way to notify Apple that the local re-sales are making not a good name for Apple by being incompetent and slow?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are a couple of things that you can check if you are concerned. If the surface of your desk is being deformed by the heat, it sounds to me that your mac is running too hot. I have mine on my lap now, and it is just mildly warm.
Run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test. This is on Install Disc #1 of the gray discs that came with your computer. You hold down "D" to boot to the test--instructions are on the disc and the screen that comes up. This will test several things including the fans and the thermal sensors. If there is anything wrong, you will get an error code, which is indicative of a hardware problem.
The other thing that can happen is that some process will run amok in the background and hog the CPU and generate heat. The way to look for this is to open Activity Monitor, in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder. Set the top box to show "All Processes" and the lower bar on "CPU". Then look at the CPU column and see if you can find some process running that shouldn't be that is using 50% or more of the CPU. If you do, highlight it and quit it. One example of a process that often causes problems is a printer process, but it could be just about anything. If you find such a rogue process, quitting it should bring down the temperature.
Also look at the two boxes showing CPU Usage. Under light use, these boxes should be mostly black. If you see a lot of green or red, something is going on.
Here are the temperatures for my MBP with 5 applications open:
    CPU A 52℃
    GPU Diode 58℃
    GPU Heatsink 51℃
    Heatsink A 52℃
    Heatsink B 41℃
    Enclosure Base 32℃
    Mem Controller 43℃
    Airport Card 53℃
    Left Fan 2000 RPM
    Right Fan 1995 RPM
One more thing to check--is the battery very hot? Mine is warm, but not hot--I can easily hold my hand on it. If yours is very warm, it might have a problem. As it happens, there were a number of defective batteries shipped.
I am not familiar with how to contact Apple in your part of the world. If you are unhappy with the service you are receiving, you could always write Apple at their corporate office:
    Apple
    1 Infinite Loop
    Cupertino, CA 95014-2084
    USA
    Good luck!
