MacBook Pro Overheating, Fans Won't Kick In Appropriately.

So the issue here is simple.
1.) When I am playing a game (normally Counter Strike Source) my MacBook Pro will become very hot very fast. I play natively through Steam for Mac so I am not using Windows.
2.) When the computer is doing intensive things it seems, the fans will kick in accordingly doing what they must. However when I go to game, and the heat it at the upmost, the fans sound like they turn off as if the computer is just sitting there idle. I can watch my temps in iStat control and temperature monitor. And after about 10 minutes of play, my CPU is 100+ C (around 102 before the drop)
3.) After this point, my FPS (Frames Per Second) in game are more than halved. The game seems to take a massive hit in performance and everything is choppy. I know this is because it overheated and kicked down the clock speeds on the CPU / GPU to save it.
-- I am not sure why the fans won't kick in. I know that they are working, so I got SMC fan control and also tried the fan control through iStat menus. I can set them to medium and they will turn on. And I am able to game all day with no issue. However should I set control to default, the fans seem to not turn on when needed and let the MacBook overheat. I feel like this is a software issue of some type. I do not understand why though. I know my fans are working. I am playing on the same desk I have been for months with no issue. This literally started out of nowhere one day when I was playing.
I did not have any type of fan control software installed when this happened originally, but since I have installed SMC and iStat menus that has controlled it and allowed me to game, however it's quite annoying to have to be manually setting fan speeds all the time.
What should I do??

Same here. I am using Parallels and when launching games through it the fan doesn't go over 2,000 RPM when CPU is at 98% and way over 90 celcius. I am forced to then start something processor-intensive on OS X to get the fan going faster. There's a bug in there somewehere.

  • Macbook Pro Overheating/Fan Problem

Here's a thread I posted on my World of Warcraft guild's forums. I'm reposting it here for additional suggestions. Please ignore the WoW jargon if you're not familiar with the game, but be aware that a "raid" is a situation where graphic intensity is at a high within the game, and can be particularly taxing on a system. Also note that WoW is 4.5 years old, and should not be all that taxing overall on a Macbook Pro compared to newer games.
My Macbook Pro runs hot. In fact, almost all MBPs run hot, hotter than your average notebook computer. The norm seems to be 150-160 degrees during high activity situations (games, compressing video, etc.) However, mine is running even hotter. Last night during the raid, it was peeking at around 174 degrees. Bear in mind that I was playing with all settings minimized, but at full resolution 1400 x 900 or whatever it is.
Now the real problem. Two nights ago, after extended WoWing, a fan on the right side of my computer (or what sounded like a fan) started to sound like it was making contact with something else in the computer, creating a light buzzing noise. After a few minutes, this noise had escalated to a full-blown, really-annoying buzz. I exited WoW, shut down the computer, and started it again after about 10 seconds. Buzzing sound was gone, fans back to normal. Decided to watch Lost on ABC.com, which got the fans going a bit, but not nearly to WoW levels (WoW levels being 4500-6000 RPMs, it's idling at 2000 RPMs right now.)
Last night, during the raid, it happened again. If you were in my 20-man raid, you heard it for yourself over my vent mic. I restarted WoW twice during the raid, but after only a few minutes the sound came back. Had to use a frozen pizza in a plastic bag as a cooling pad. Computer was running much cooler (163-165 degrees, normal for WoW on my computer) but the sound persisted. Turned off some addons, capped the frame rate at 20 fps, sound persisted. After the raid, restarted my computer, buzzing was gone, decided to watch more Lost and the buzzing hasn't been back since. I suspect it will be back during Sarth 3D tonight.

They replaced it with another 8600M GT, a card notorious for overheating and dying. Both Apple and Dell provided free extended warranties for computers using the 8600M.
    Any suggestions?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You might want to run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test, just to rule out any physical problem with the fan, such as a dying bearing or something like that.
That said, it sounds more like there is a physical interference of some sort. It may be when the Mac gets hot, the geometry changes just enough that a fan blade could start rubbing on the housing. Or possibly there is something caught in the fan blade, like the leaf in my Dodge truck's AC fan that makes noise whenever it is turned up high.
I don't play WOW myself, but I understand that it will make the Mac run hot, and at 6000 RPM, the fans will get a lot of use. There's always the possibility that they might wear out sooner because of that. It's probably a good idea to run the AHT every so often to check for signs of premature failure.
    Good luck!

  • MacBook Pro overheating, fan is loud

I have a MacBook Pro 13", purchased August 2012. It has been overheating. The fan has becoming very loud and it keeps restarting. Also, this pop up keeps appearing, but disappears just as fast as it appears. It doesn't give me enough time to read what it says or copy the screen. Only thing I can tell is that there is a yellow triangle with "!".

  • 2011 Macbook Pro Overheating *VIDEO*

Well, I must say that I am really disappointed with the current 2011 Macbook pro lineup. This was my first Mac, I must say that I was really excited to finally own one. As I started using it, I noticed how hot the laptop was getting and how loud the fans were. While I was typing a simple E-mail, my palms were getting really hot and was a very uncomfortable feeling. I've been around friends who have own previous models and all have been very quiet and also fairly cool.
I started to get curious so I started reading the temps and it was a staggering 90c degrees! This was just while web browsing, having iTunes loaded and just doing normal day to day stuff. I immediately went online and did a Google search for "2011 Macbook Pro Overheating". I come to find out that it is a common problem. What was most disappointing to me was the fact that Apple is fully aware of this problem and has disabled Turbo Boost on the 13.3" Core i7 while running Bootcamp. So technically speaking, your better off buying the Core i5 model as it will run faster.
I decided to return the laptop, I feel it's deceiving to buy a product that really doesn't perform at it's full potential (It's like buying a Ferrari and only be able to go 60MPH). My batter life was also terrible, I was lucky if I got 3.5 hours under normal web browsing. I think this had a lot to do with the fact that the fan kept spinning at full speed every 2 minutes.
I hope this post doesn't come off as a flame, but rather constructive criticism on Apple's design to improve their products. I truly believe that Apple needs to redesign their Macbook Pro lineup to accept modern processors that run a lot hotter compared to when the Macbook Pro was first introduced. The fact that it has no ventilation in the bottom like every computer out there poses a huge problem with newer processors. I understand the aesthetics portion of the design, but I would much rather have a few small vent holes to keep the processor running cool and maintain a longer life for the hardware.
Lastly, before anyone say's that I got a "defective" one I want to say that this was my 2nd 2011 Macbook Pro as the first one was returned due to the same problems. Here is my video of my experience - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_azMBStJnY

I am having a similar problem. Bought MacBook Pro 17" 16 months ago and after about 9 months, routinely, daily, but no particular time I got a black screen suddenly.
(This is running Windows 7 all the time.)
So daily it has been doing this except for a 3 week visit to Europe ... weird.  Yet while in Europe no change in usage. Software or hardware. Except that in US I have it plugged often into a bigger monitor. And sometimes have lid closed but not for the past month while being back.
Return to US and within 2 weeks, suddenly black screen of death anytime during the day, keyboard in use or not.
Called Apple finally yesterday ... they need to know if it happens under Apple IOS.  No idea.  So for 1 1/2 days ran Apple and did nothing!  No black screen.
But what I have noticed is that when it does go black the bodyis HOT!!!  Especially between the screen hinge and F keys to the left.
Today I did two more things ... installed gotomypc to see if when it goes black if the laptop is functional, just dead video.  I will try to remote in when it goes "dead".
Also I put a load of coins on the laptop where it gets hot to absorb the heat and do they ever!
One thing ... the first time I ever saw this black screen symptom it RECOVERD after 3-4 seconds and gave off an error message like
“Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” error.
So based on researching this, it sounds like the video card needs replacing OR a driver update OR a bath in cold water?

I have an Epson printer on a Wifi network. Windows 7 desktop is running the network, and my wife's HP Win 7 laptop prints to it just fine. My MacBook Pro running Yosemite won't detect it, and I do have the latest driver installed. I didn't have a problem when I had a Canon Pixma on the network, but when I replaced it with the Epson nothing seems to work. I go to add a printer to the queue and only the FAX function of the printer shows up - not the WS-4530 print function. Does anyone out there have any suggestions?  Please??? :-)

    Hi Kelly,
As someone who has to print from my Mac to a networked printer at home all the time, I can certainly understand how frustrating it must be to have that fail to perform as expected. Let's see if we can get you up and running.
I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

  • One of my MacBook Pro's fans is running at full speed

Out of the blue today, my 2011 MacBook Pro started fans went mental when I awoke if from it's sleep. They started running at full speed, far louder than I've ever heard them before. I searched through other discussions and it suggested I try an SMC reset. I performed one of these with no success.
I then opened smcFanControl and noticed that my leftside fan was running at 7000rpm+ and the rightside fan was running at normal speed 2000rpm. It randomly spools on and off high speed and I cannot find any fixes or similar problems online. Can anyone suggest a fix for this or should I be taking it to a repairer?
FYI my logic board was only replaced in April under warranty so could it be faulty?

    Hi andyBall_uk
SMC fan control measures temp also. Currently running at 47*C as you can see in the screenshot below. I tried overriding the fan speeds...works for the right fan but not the left one so it appears only the left fan has the fault.
The weird thing is, when you press your finger down anywhere on the left speaker next to the built-in keyboard, the fan slows back down to normal speed, but when you let go it speeds back up again. I might open it up in the morning to see if any of the connections are loose, because it seems weird that this happens with a small amount of pressure applied to the body. Also of you tilt the macbook it sometimes slows back down to normal speed (but sometimes stays at high speed). I will let you know how I go. Thanks for your suggestion/s

I just bought a MBA and I need to move my photos and itunes to an external hard drive (from my old MacBook Pro) because they won't fit on the Air.  I got the photos moved fine and I followed an online tutorial to move the necessary files for itunes, but it didn't work.  The files copied fine, but when I tell iTunes on the Air to look at the external drive for the library, it doesn't find anything.  What I copied was the entire iTunes Media folder.  So, how do I move the necessary iTunes files from my old Pro to a external drive so I can access them from my new Air?  Whew!

iTunes- How to move the library to an EHD
After you move the library you need to open iTunes by first depressing the OPTION key then launching iTunes. You will be given a choice of which library to use. This can then be made a permanent change, if you wish, in the Advanced section of iTunes preferences.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 15" won't turn on.

Macbook Pro Retina 15" won't turn on. The charger light is orange. I tried all tips that Apple provides on the official site -  http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204267. Any ideas?

If you purchased it from Apple directly, they have a 14 exchange or refund policy.  Keep that in mind when you go to the store.
    Ciao.

  • My macbook pro early 2012 won't install release version of yosemite after being in the beta test

my macbook pro early 2012 won't install release version of yosemite after being in the beta test, anyone else having any issues with this?

Received an email from apple saying thank you for being in the beta test and they tell you to download the release version from the mac app store and install it. Done this twice and it says installed successfully after rebooting twice and doing the usual install of a new OS. However when it boots up and opens your desktop it still has the Feedback assistant installed and continuity and all the new features do not work at all. Making me assume that the final release has not installed at all. Spoke to apple on the Phone and they Don't know how to solve it. Except for doing a fresh OS Install. Which i would rather not do, but might have too. currently backing up my Mac as we spec to do it

    Hello JashaCOLD,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your external hard drive.  I found an article with steps you can take when an external device is not being recognized.
I recommend following the steps in the section titled "Top troubleshooting tips" in the following article:

  • My MacBook Pro retina 2013 won't charge. I've checked all connections which are all ok. Little red light shows on magnetic plug, instead of usual green.

My MacBook Pro retina 2013 won't charge. I've checked all connections which are all ok. Little red light shows on magnetic plug, instead of usual green.

If you are seeing a Red LED, you may have a faulty MagSafe Adapter.
I remember reading that the orange light is produced by a combination of a Red and Green LED. If that's the case, It seems that the adapter isn't lighting the green LED properly at that time.
I would suggest you seek service with your nearest Genius Bar (Apple Retail Store) or Apple Authorised Service Provider as they have access to diagnostics which may assist in isolating any hardware issues you may be experiencing.
    Cheers.
