MacBook Pro Overheating with WoW Patch 4.2

Hi all, I've started having a problem with my MacBook Pro. The only heavy things I do with it are pretty much World of Warcraft and Starcraft II. Prior to WoW's most recent patch my computer would get from around 180F-190F (82C-87C) when raiding, otherwise it'd stay closer to 165F or 73C. When WoW's newest patch hit, 4.2, they released two new areas into the game. Originally there wasn't much of a problem. These areas did seem more graphically intensive and my MacBook Pro did run a little hotter in them than normal, but not by much.
However, several days later in their new Daily quest hub my computer is running at 199F-208F (92C-97.7C) and then when doing the new raid the game introduced it jumps all the way to 214F (101.1C) sometimes. I've tried turning down the graphics in WoW and that doesn't help. I've tried turning off the mods I use, that doesn't help. What I am worried about is if it keeps climbing higher in temperature hitting that automatic shut off point (supposed at 110C?) and of course damaging my computer.
I thought maybe it could be the vents/fans/heatsinks are clogged with fur/dust (I have a cat who loves to sleep on me while I use my computer) But I've been told by someone that that isn't really a possibility. So my question is, what should I do? Is this something I should bring my computer in for to an apple store and they can fix? Is it just that with this new patch WoW makes MacBook Pros run really really hot and there's nothing I can do? Could it be I was right and there's junk clogging the heatsink/fans?
As further information I do have a cooling fan under my laptop.
Thanks for the help,
Mr. Monkey the Anaconda

Hey mate,
I used to play WoW on my macbook pro (late 2008), but since I haven't played the game in like 4 years I guess that's irrelevant.  I can however suggest two three things:
1) Clean the fans from dust (requires you to take off the backcover)
2) Download/use smcfancontrol (try this first)
3) Replace the thermal paste, too much or insufficient paste will increase the temp. (not recommended unless you know what you are doing).
Hope this helps

  • Macbook Pro Overheating with Flash Player

-- Apologies in advance if this has been posted, I couldn't find anything that quite addressed my issue --
I'm running 10.5.8 on a macbook pro that's about 1.5 years old. Recently, my fans have been going nuts (over 6000 rpm on both sides) whenever I run a flash program for even just a minute or so.
I have istat nano and I wrote down temps when the fans were running at 6000:
    HD: Macintosh HD = 39
    CPU A = 103
    CPU Diode = 69
    CPU Heatsink = 55
    Heatsink A = 53
    Heatsink B = 45
    Enclosure Bottom = 32
I'm pretty careful about keeping the mac on a flat surface in a relatively cool area.
The battery feels very hot, and when I try to run a flash program without the battery in, the mac still seems to heat up, but not quite as much.
Any suggestions on how to solve this would be greatly appreciated.

    HI,
Flash is a CPU intensive app.
    Try Resetting the PRAM
If that doesn't help, try Resetting the SMC
If you aren't using it the <a href=http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html iState Pro </a> Great for monitoring temps and you can run cron tasks.
Also, make sure your MBPro has sufficient free disk space. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a *minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.*

  • 2011 Macbook Pro Overheating *VIDEO*

Well, I must say that I am really disappointed with the current 2011 Macbook pro lineup. This was my first Mac, I must say that I was really excited to finally own one. As I started using it, I noticed how hot the laptop was getting and how loud the fans were. While I was typing a simple E-mail, my palms were getting really hot and was a very uncomfortable feeling. I've been around friends who have own previous models and all have been very quiet and also fairly cool.
I started to get curious so I started reading the temps and it was a staggering 90c degrees! This was just while web browsing, having iTunes loaded and just doing normal day to day stuff. I immediately went online and did a Google search for "2011 Macbook Pro Overheating". I come to find out that it is a common problem. What was most disappointing to me was the fact that Apple is fully aware of this problem and has disabled Turbo Boost on the 13.3" Core i7 while running Bootcamp. So technically speaking, your better off buying the Core i5 model as it will run faster.
I decided to return the laptop, I feel it's deceiving to buy a product that really doesn't perform at it's full potential (It's like buying a Ferrari and only be able to go 60MPH). My batter life was also terrible, I was lucky if I got 3.5 hours under normal web browsing. I think this had a lot to do with the fact that the fan kept spinning at full speed every 2 minutes.
I hope this post doesn't come off as a flame, but rather constructive criticism on Apple's design to improve their products. I truly believe that Apple needs to redesign their Macbook Pro lineup to accept modern processors that run a lot hotter compared to when the Macbook Pro was first introduced. The fact that it has no ventilation in the bottom like every computer out there poses a huge problem with newer processors. I understand the aesthetics portion of the design, but I would much rather have a few small vent holes to keep the processor running cool and maintain a longer life for the hardware.
Lastly, before anyone say's that I got a "defective" one I want to say that this was my 2nd 2011 Macbook Pro as the first one was returned due to the same problems. Here is my video of my experience - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_azMBStJnY

I am having a similar problem. Bought MacBook Pro 17" 16 months ago and after about 9 months, routinely, daily, but no particular time I got a black screen suddenly.
(This is running Windows 7 all the time.)
So daily it has been doing this except for a 3 week visit to Europe ... weird.  Yet while in Europe no change in usage. Software or hardware. Except that in US I have it plugged often into a bigger monitor. And sometimes have lid closed but not for the past month while being back.
Return to US and within 2 weeks, suddenly black screen of death anytime during the day, keyboard in use or not.
Called Apple finally yesterday ... they need to know if it happens under Apple IOS.  No idea.  So for 1 1/2 days ran Apple and did nothing!  No black screen.
But what I have noticed is that when it does go black the bodyis HOT!!!  Especially between the screen hinge and F keys to the left.
Today I did two more things ... installed gotomypc to see if when it goes black if the laptop is functional, just dead video.  I will try to remote in when it goes "dead".
Also I put a load of coins on the laptop where it gets hot to absorb the heat and do they ever!
One thing ... the first time I ever saw this black screen symptom it RECOVERD after 3-4 seconds and gave off an error message like
“Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” error.
So based on researching this, it sounds like the video card needs replacing OR a driver update OR a bath in cold water?

  • Pink color cast on macbook pro 15" with retina display

    Hi,
I just got my very first apple computer a few weeks ago, but I had a annoying pink color cast of the display.
I changed my first deivce but even the 2nd had the same issue..
I noticed, that even the Apple logo shines in a pink cast, so it seems to be an issue of the display light itself.
Trying to calibrate the display with a spyder did not work, i got a very strange green color cast what seems to be clear, if the main problem is not the display itself,
    but the display light.
I went to the Apple Sore in Hamburg and I found out, that all new macbook pros 15" with retina display had the same issue, but not older macbooks or some  macbook pro 15" with retina display from clients.
As a photographer, I find this pink cast very annoying and I gave back my 2nd macbook pro 15" with retina display..
Is there a way, to get a macbook pro 15" with retina display without a pink cast, where the Apple logo shines in pure white instead of a pink color cast?
I don´t want a pink apple logo, nor a display with a pink cast..

    HERE IT IS:
3x Logic board replacement (Warranty). I had to replace three logic boards for this one poor sod that had the same issue over and over again. In the end Apple gave him a whole new computer.

  • Best cooling pad for Macbook pro 15" with retina (2013)?

    Hi,
I have a Macbook pro 15" with retina display, bought in 2013 and I started playing Starcraft on the machine. It becomes extremely hot, almost unbearable to touch and after searching online, I've been told that overheating of macs is relatively common. It is also extremely noisy. Firstly, is this something that I should be worried about, i.e. is it normal? (it is still under warranty) Also, I was looking to get a cooling pad- which one would you recommend? I couldn't find many macbook pro w/ retina display specific ones, so I thought maybe a generic laptop cooling pad?
There are so many to choose from and I don't know where to start! Perhaps the Cooler Master NotePal X3?
    Thank you for your help!

    is it normal?
Is the game rated for the GPU on the Mac (look at the game's specs)?  If not, then I would not run it on that Mac.
If it is rated for the GPU on the Mac, then no, it is not normal, and I would have the machine looked at, after running the hardware test that came with it.
See my tip about MacBook Pro heat:
kmb kmbp: How to deal with MacBook Pro and MacBook heat?
The GPU is the Graphics Processor Unit.
A cooling pad might help, but it might also mask a more serious problem.      I've used this cooler on Powerbooks before:
    http://www.amazon.com/Antec-Notebook-Cooler-USB-Powered/dp/B0000BVYTV
But only outside warranty.   Mind you, because of the heat, sometimes some of the darker markings on the edge of the cooler and come off on the bottom of the notebook.  Hence why I would only use it outside of warranty, since such marks may make the AppleCare representative think you might have done something to damage it.

  • MacBook Pro overheating after security update

Why is my Macbook Pro overheating?

None of your images are displayed.  If you could try again it might be of help.
118° f is satisfactory and not to be alarmed at.  Aperture certainly can increase the temperature.  I surmise that your MBP is a pre-unibody model.
Here are the list of videos from the OWC web site.  Choose the one for the model that you have, 15" or 17" and look at one at replacing the HDD to understand how to take the top cover off.  Having an older MBP, you may have dirt and dust inside that should be cleaned out and this is the only way of accessing it. Contaminants can be a cause of heat buildup.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/
You will need a #00 Phillips and a #6 Torx drivers for this.  I suggest doing this on a clear table with a towel underneath.  That way you can slide the MBP easily around and if you drop one of the screws, they will not bounce far.  Sequence is important and taking off the top cover should be done with care so that the ribbon cable is not damaged.

There are a couple of other pay-for apps that do this, but they're not as good... some people have had success.

After some advice, I am new to Apple and looking to purchase either the MacBook Air 13inch with 256GB and 8GB mem or the MacBook Pro 13inch with retina 256Gb and 8GB mem. I am an assistant principal in a primary school and also studying my masters at university. I don't play computer games and I don't watch movies. I do store photos and videos of my kids and music on iTunes. I also like browsing the net with numerous windows open, check email etc. I am really wanting long battery life as I do a lot of my work on the couch - not close to a PowerPoint. Would the air do the trick or will it soon be outdated as Apple move towards retina display? Both air and pro seem very thin  - almost the same? And not much difference in weight either so both very portable which is also a necessary requirement. Just can't help dreaming about that 12 hour claimed battery life. Any helpful advice/opinions, very much appreciated. Thanks

It's not likely that you'll get 12 hours in reql life. Those benchmarks are set under very strict controlled conditions. Kind of like mileage per gallon claims on cars. If 16GB of ram is an option at all I'd highly recommend you get that. As far as storage 256GB isn't alot, consider storing some things on an external thunderbolt real

I have a brand new macbook pro 15" with latest Lion. Can anyone tell me why, when I open word or preview etc that multiple files open? For eg if I open a word doc, the last 1-3 docs that I have worked previously on all open. Can anyone tell me why?

You have a choice as to whether or not applications in Lion like Word or Preview (or even Safari) save and re-open previous documents or windows... just hold down the option key while quitting a program and when you re-open it you won't get the previous documents or windows when you re-open the application. You can see this by selecting the open program in the menu bar and when holding down the option key the quit function will change to quit and discard open windows. This feature in Lion is referred to as "Resume" and is great if you want to restart an app and return to what you're doing (for example in Safari re-opening existing windows and tabs from your previous session). You still have the option to close individual windows within an app before quitting and they will not re-open when the app is launched again.
This Resume function is not related to saving your work (a word or text document for example). This is handled by Lion's "Auto-Save" and "Versions" functions. See http://www.apple.com/ca/macosx/whats-new/auto-save.html
Hopefully this is the complete answer you're looking for.

I have a Macbook pro 2009 with Snow Leopard.  Which system can I install without running into complicated problems which I will not be able to solve by myself- a person with limited problem solving abilities. (Mountain Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite?)

It will make it easier to help you w/ your problem to know the  size and RAM installed.
"Yesterday I couldn't update the maps on my Garmin because it said the OS I had wouldn't work"
What OS will your Garmin work with? Funny there was someone else that did that and upgraded to Yosemite and regretted it.
I'd say Lion if your Garmin is compatible.
Both Lion and Mountain Lion are downloadable from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion

The OSs will get more resource hungry the higher you go.
