MacBook Pro Oversea's

I'm looking to get a new macbook pro but I need to know if it will work oversea's. Is there wireless internet in Kusami, Ghana for instance? Or will my Modem adaptor work over there? How about the world traveler AC adapters, I know it doesnt specifically say privy for the continent of Africa but does anyone have any idea/experience on the matter? Thanks in advance.
Kerry.

Depends on where are you staying. Like the Golden Tulip in Accra for example, they do have wireless internet.

I would however pack my modem too, just a s a back up. Especially if they don't have international hotels in Kusami.
The adapter that comes with the MBP is universal to handle all , you will just need a plug coverter.

  • Will I get the same warranty services in australia if I purchase my MacBook Pro oversea (I.e. Malaysia)?

Hi there, I am planning to purchase the new MacBook Pro oversea Malaysia. Apparently it is cheaper compared to australia retail price. However, I am concerned about the warranty. Do I have to purchase the machine in australia to be entitled for Apple store warranty services in australia? Thanks

The Apple warranty is world wide.  Have no fear, you will receive the same treatment in Australia as if you had purchased it there.

  • I want to purchase a Macbook Pro overseas for the keyboard layout and set the OS to English, but if I do so, would the keyboard layout also switch to English? Can I set the foreign layout as default?

I would assume that changing the default keyboard so that I can use the proper corresponding one is possible, but I would just like to make sure before I buy one.
    Thanks in advance.

  • HT201328 Can I unlock an old, unused iPhone 3GS (to be used overseas with a local simcard) and upload on it data from a newer iPhone 4 on the same MacBook Pro?

Can I unlock an old, unused iPhone 3GS (to be used overseas with a local simcard) and upload on it data from a newer iPhone 4 on the same MacBook Pro?

I got approval to unlock my 3GS from AT&T and in the process of updating the operating system. I am now using a iPhone 4 on my computer. I just want to know the following:
When I backup and restore the 3GS in order to unlock it, will it mess up my existing data backed up from my iPhone 4?
Can I upload data from my newer iPhone 4 onto my 3GS?

  • My MacBook Pro (mid 2010) won't startup correctly in my admin account, but works fine if I use the guest account...

My MacBook Pro (mid-2010) suddenly stopped working when I was overseas, but I managed to fix it when I returned back to the States after I reformatted and erased the disk, then installed Yosemite. I lost most of my files but didn't really care, though I noticed that some pictures from iPhoto had survived and were in the Trash folder.
I thought I could copy/paste them back into iPhoto, but it wouldn't let me since they were still in the trash. I started getting an error message for EACH PICTURE saying it couldn't be copied because it was in the trash, and when I realized that I'd have to click "ok" 644 times (once for each picture), I tried to restart, then shut down, and eventually forced a shut down by holding down the power button. This is where the problem started...
After trying to startup again, I was able to login to my admin account, and the desktop image would load, but I'd get the spinning rainbow wheel and the computer would remain frozen like that from then on. I tried to repair the disk (there was nothing wrong), and even re-installed the operating system again, but still the problem persists. BUT, if I login with my guest account, everything works fine.
I'm guessing it has something to do with it somehow being frozen on those error messages for those 600+ pictures, but I have no idea how to fix/unfreeze it. Any tips or suggestions?

I can try to find and buy new SATA2 sdd hdd but they are expensive and I'm not sure it will fix the restarting issue.
SATA3 is backwards compatible with SATA2.  That is not likely to be your problem.
Based on what you have done, I suggest a reinstall of the OSX.

  • How to charge my MacBook Pro in Singapore

Read the notice on your power brick. It clearly, although in small print, says that it is good for 100 - 240 volts.

  • Mag Safe power cord sparks when connected or disconnected--whereupon the MacBook Pro 13'' dumps date and time, and all passwords, plus any/all unsaved information.

I purchased my MacBook Pro 13" from the Apple Store in Tucson, AZ, in mid-January. Since then, every time the Mag-Safe cord is jostled, not even disconnected, sparks fly from the power terminal on the computer, the computer shuts down, and dumps its passwords, as well as the date and time.
Any work in progress is also lost.
I work overseas, and Apple's advice was to give them my credit card number, await shipment of a new power supply and cord, and then, when I return the old power supply and cord, i'd receive a credit. That won't work, as packages from the US to my location take weeks if they arrive at all. There is no Apple Store within a reasonable distance. Or, Apple suggests, when I'm home on leave in mid-June, I should bring the computer to the Apple Store for repair--I have only days in which to do that, but I suppose I'll need to try. My concern is that I'll need to return overseas without my computer and won't be able to retrieve it for months, until my next leave.
This issue shows up elsewhere online. Is there a short in the power terminal in the computer, or on the Mag-Safe power cord, or within the computer itself? It's a known issue, thus I wonder why it hasn't been fixed.

  • What's a good file recovery program for a MacBook Pro running IS 10.7.5?

Hey gang - I ordered a miniStack 4TB external hard drive from OWC a few months ago during a long overseas trip. I finally unwrapped it and started dumping data to the drive from the 1TB drives (also from OWC) I used via my MacBook Pro. I connected the 4TB to the laptop with FW800.
I came back from the gym (gone about two hours) and saw a "the drive wasn't disconnected properly..." window. There was a clicking noise coming from the drive, which means mechanical failure.
I went into Disk Utility and the drive is there but it's grayed out. I changed cables to USB 3.0. Unplugged the drive. Shut down the laptop. Then went through the start up and nadda.
So before I run off a disk repair place in town and spend $1000, what's a good hard drive recovery program to use to pull the data? I only dumped 1.5TBs until the 4TB and have other drives to dump that data too if I need to.
    Thanks.
    Cheers,
    Bill.

    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service, such as Data Recovery by DriveSavers, which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

my macbook pro running lion will not boot . it stays on the grey page with the cog spinning. I have tried all methods of booting to no avail. I have removed the bottom and taken out the battery and the ram . will this affect my applecare warranty. I had to try myself as I'm overseas for two months and nowhere near any sort of help .

there was a recent software update that seemed to screw HDV up.  Do some searching here over the last month or 2 and you'll find a bunch of posts and some possible solutions.
Worst case scenario, do as Shane suggests.  But might I suggest you take a look at the user tips section of the forum.  there are some great tips on how to prevent these sorts of problems by cloning your startup drive, etc.

  • 15in Macbook Pro early 2011 won't shutoff nor can I run disk utilities. Any suggestions?

    Situation:
I have a 15in Macbook Pro early 2011 that I can not shutdown nor can I run disk utility to repair any issues. I recently had it serviced to replace a failing hard drive.
    Known issues:
         - Disk Utility: Will not respond. A couple days ago I had to run it to repair some damage to harddrive. When I try to open it, it is frozen with the rainbow ball.
         - Shutdown: I can not shutdown or restart my computer as it freezes during shutdown with grey screen. I can manually turn it on and off by holding down the      power button.
         - Disc Drive: This may not be related but I can not eject DVD in the disc drive.
Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. I currently live overseas (for school) so just going to an Apple store is not really a realistic option for me at this time. Thanks

Take it back to where you had it serviced, there is usually a ~90 day guarantee
you can force a shutdown by holding the power button for longer than usual.

  • 3G and GPRS internet on MacBook Pro

I am currently using a G4 PowerBook together with a Vodafone 3G/GPRS data card for internet access. I am considering buying a new MacBook Pro but note that there is no PC slot so I would not be able to use my cellular internet access. Is there any solution for this? I would have thought that cellular internet access was a growing market and Apple seem to have excluded MacBook Pro users. Maybe they know something I don't--perhaps there will be an alternative way of connecting a datacard, perhaps via USB.

Most providers charge excessively for GPRS roaming. It can be up to 12 euros per Mb. It is worth asking your mobile phone company if they have a special subscription for overseas data roaming (usually for a small additional monthly subscription). Checking email on a phone and small amounts of web browsing involves very little download. Set your preferences so that attachments are not downloaded automatically. On my phone I have a 10Mb monthly data package for inland use and I haven't exceed it so far. Bear in mind, too, that there is usually a price difference between partner networks and non-partner networks. This is no problem when you are at home because your phone doesn't roam. Abroad, it goes for the strongest signal. So you need to find out the partner network and select it manually (for instance, if you are on Vodafone you find the foreign Vodafone network and lock on to it). The website usually gives you a list of partner networks.
However, if you are connecting to a PC or Mac for web access (especially with 3G which is six times faster than GPRS) you can face big bills. One of the biggest pitfalls is leave automatic software updating switched on. A typical update of, say, 30Mb could cost you over 300 euros abroad and the first you will know about it will be when you get your bill. Web access via GPRS/3G is scandalously expensive it is about time the mobile companies did something about it

  • Okay to use MacBook Pro without battery?

Now I fully understand that it is not such a great idea but I wanted to get some opinions: It's my third NuPower battery. All of them have lasted less than a year and failed pretty bad. This one started bulging quite bad and then I couldn't use the trackpad click button anymore (because it was putting pressure on the trackpad / button.) I took it out and the battery started expanding even outside the laptop! I don't consider myself a rough user. I do occasionally reccaliberate the battery per Apple, make sure I raise the laptop off the table etc. to let air pass under. Currently I am overseas and many Apple resellers do not carry the battery in stock. So I have ordered the battery from Amazon. In the mean time, I am using the MacBook Pro directly hooked up to the 240V outlet with the Apple supplied adapter.
I have heard a few people do this in emergencies. But what say you?! Unlike the US 120V, it's 240 Volts here in India! Somehow I felt better with the battery being there to absorb the jolts! but I have had no issues so far - two days. The Mac wakes up, runs, sleeps fine without a hiccup! I am taking extra care not to trip the extra-easy MagSafe adapter
Has anyone done this? Any direct adverse effects caused by running it straight from the outlet without the battery?

  • Upgrading Macbook Pro 15.4" 2008 Internal SATA HDD To SATA II?

    Greetings Apple Community,
Im considering purchasing a higher capacity internal hardrive around the 750Gb/1Tb mark. However my macbook is the early 2008 model, and it seems the majority of hardrives are SATA II, having speeds of 3Gbt, which my mother board may not be capable of (apparently only 1.5Gbt)
From researching and reading some reviews of others who have purchased internal drives on Amazon UK, some have had difficulty due to this problem, but have been able to fix the issue with a firmware update reducing SATA II drive speeds to 1.5Gbt.
    Questions I have:
Do all SATA / SATA II internal hardrives need a firmware update if replacing on to a new computer?
(If so, would I need to look for a specific firmware update for the specific drive I intend on buying? And if you're in the knowledge would you mind posting links to these updates?)
What is the process of updating the firmware i.e. would I need to put firmware on external usb hardrive 1st, then upload it to macbook after installing new internal drive (if it boots up my OS that is) etc.
Would a 'hybrid' (disk+solid state) drive be compatible with a macbook as old as mine?
Do I need to update my operating system to OS X Lion first, or can it be done after installing the drive?
Some internal drives I've been considering (from Amazon.co.uk):
    Samsung M8 1TB 2.5" 5400rpm SATA II OEM (£75.95)
    Seagate 2.5" Momentus ST9750420AS 750Gb 7200rpm SATA-300 16Gb Buffer (£79.99)
    Western Digital 2.5" Scorpio Black 750Gb 7200rpm SATA 16Mb (£88)
Feel free to add your thoughts, which manufacterers to avoid/or perhaps recommend?
Your help/suggestions is greatly appreciated. Apologies in advance for my unfamiliarity in this topic!
    Kind Regards
For reference, my current laptop hardware:
Macbook Pro 15.4" (Early 2008 Model)
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz Processor
GeForce 256Mb 8600M GT Graphical Processor
Intel ICH8_M AHCI 1.5 Gbt Motherboard
    Toshiba MK1655GSXF 160Gb 2.5" Hard Drive
Operating System: OS X Leopard 10.5.8

    Appreciate the link,
unfortunately for me I live in the UK, and although I think they deliver overseas, this would incur more costs.
There are UK sellers, I might consider, but although they sell drives that Apple use in their laptops, they do cost a lot more, for the Gb space provided compared to other manufacturers. But its something I'll have to consider, cheers.

  • KeyBoard Layout on Macbook Pro

Hi I have one of those silly questions regarding keyboard layout. I have picked up a 2010 Macbook pro (first mac I have had) that had been purchased overseas. It is absolutely in immaculate condition but the layout of the keyboard is a bit of a pain. I can map it to the Australian layout but because I am not a touch typist it becomes slow work. So what I would like to do is map it and get some of the keys replaced to suit. Is the possible and any body have an idea of cost.
Also the Apple website tells me I have about 9 months left on the warranty does it matter if it was purchased overseas (i do have the receipt).
    Thanks

Contact an Apple retail store directly yourself and ask if they can make a special order for you.

  • Why does my mid 2012 MacBook Pro Retina latptop shut down during software installation/updates?

Whenever I attempt to update preexisting software apps or install new ones, my mid 2012 MacBook Pro w/ Retina display will shut down and reboot itself. Obviously this has gotten frustrating as several of my existing apps are woefully out of date.
Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Thanks for the assistance and sorry for the late reply, I'm overseas doing HA work and don't always have internet access.
I tried utilizing the methods you mentioned and upon doing so I received the following message:
So I followed this set of instructions and when verifying and repairing disk permissions the window stated that the partition was okay.
After logging back in, I attempted to download a software update, sadly the system shut itself down and rebooted and I am still unable to install any updates for my out of date apps. I won't return to the States until June, I may have to wait until then to resolve this issue.
Thank you again for your assistance.
