MacBook Pro randomly overheating

I have the Original MacBook Pro with a 1.83 GHz processor and 512 MB of ram. But recently when i try to encode video the temperature spikes in the period of a few seconds for example one time the temp went from 102F to 160F in just a few seconds then it climbs really rapidly up to 200F in just a minute of encoding. When i stop encoding i drops almost instantly back to where it was before it started encoding. I have tried to use both QuickTime Pro and Toast 10 to encode and this happened both times. So if anyone has a way to solve this problem please let me know.

That may be normal when encoding like that. The computer will automatically shut down if it gets to hot. That temp is around 212F.

  • Retina Macbook Pro randomly jumps to logon screen without warning

My Retina Macbook Pro randomly jumps to the logon screen while I am using it. When I log back in some programs have stopped running and any unsaved work has gone. It has happened while I am not typing or touching the keyboard or mouse as well.

I have the exact same problem with my Retina MBP. At first I thought it was occurring when I CMD+Tab-ed between apps but I've had it jump to the login screen without even toughing the computer. Very frustrating. Upon login I have to wait for apps to reload and I lose unsaved changes. Anyone have any advice?

  • MacBook Pro is overheating in Windows 7

My MacBook Pro is overheating with the public beta release of Windows 7. This never used to happen in XP. I'm at a loss as to why this is.
    Windows 7 32-bit on a MacBook Pro 2,2.

SpeedFan has never been found to work on Mac hardware.
Fan control is not that easy even on PC, it seems, and eVGA is working on getting a fix for their mobo.
InputRemapper use to work, but now doesn't work for everyone, not more recent MacBook and iMac - has not been updated in two years even.
Seems like it would not be that hard for Apple to develop their own tool, such as eVGA did with their E-LEET (based on CPUID). No way to monitor and control GPU fans in OS X (EVGA Precision, would be nice now that their GTX285 for Mac is a reality).
We've had a number of threads over this and heat, and what to use, and "why not SpeedFan" (all it needs is a profile, right?).

  • MacBook Pro charger overheating.

MacBook Pro charger overheating replaced it and new one is overheating also don't know if its the charger causing the the problem.

Yikes!  I assume you mean that thing some people use to smooth out their clothes?
Are you still under warranty?  I would take it in to make sure it's not something on the computer side.

My 15" MacBook Pro randomly loses connection to my AirPort Express wi-fi network. I have to switch off wi-fi on my Mac then switch on again to reconnect. Any reason why this random occurrence keeps happening which never happened before? Any solutions and fixes would also be welcomed.

In the airport utility, you can alter the radio modes... and change the channels from automatic to a manual one.
Hold down the Option key, and  click on your wifi icon, it will tell you what channels are currently being used on your OSX.

    Hi..
Try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
If that doesn't help, try Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters
When you post, please tell us which Mac OS X you have installed. Thanks

  • Macbook Pro random shut down whilst using battery

My Macbook Pro randomly shuts down whilst using battery power even though their is plenty of charge in the battery.
    Any ideas??

does it do it when plugged in?
Also it sounds that there's a power failure and causing it to shutdown, I would get it serviced asap, the battery connector might be faulty.

You have a HDD problem (hopefully you have a backup).  Start with the information on this support article:

    Ciao.

  • MacBook Pro Random Resets

I've been having this problem recently where my macbook pro randomly resets every now and then. I've never been able to do it whilst in OSX, only in windows. So far its only happened whilst I'm playing games in Windows but even then only a few games that I own.
It happens whilst I'm playing world in conflict, medieval 2 total war but not during oblivion, company of heroes or supreme commander. So I'm not really sure what could be wrong.

I am having this problem too. Here are my preliminary thoughts on the problem. When I play Command and Conquer 3, the computer just shuts off. At first, I thought this had to do with the logic board. I had just gotten it replaced via AppleCare. So I read my console log and the computer shuts off ecause of "high mem tramps".
Because of this, then i thought it was my ram modules being bad. (I have Apple supplied ram. 2 gigs matched pair.) So i took the ram modules out. ran them individually, switched them. Still random shutdowns.
So then i tried to localize my problem with my external peripherals. I have a 250 gb lacie external hard drive triple interface as well as a 750 gb western digital mybook external hard drive pro edition.
I think this is where the problem lies. i've localized my problem to my WD MyBook Pro Edition II 750 gb hard drive. When I have it connected to my computer, I can't run anything that requires any strain on my graphics card. However, when I disconnect it from the computer, I can run things completely fine.
Having said this, I'm not sure if this is exactly my problem. If anyone else wants to weigh in on this discussion, PLEASE HELP!!!

I have a late 2007 15-inch MacBook Pro (A1226). It has a 2.20 GHz Core 2 Duo, 5 GB of memory (a stock 1 GB stick and a 3rd party 4 GB stick), and a stock 200 GB 7200 RPM Hitachi hard drive. I have had issues with it shutting down in certain situations.
    (1) The laptop shuts down abruptly whenever I pick it up and walk around with it. This consistently happens within 5 seconds of picking it up. I know for a fact that this never used to be problem. I only started noticing this happening about 5 months ago.
    (2) The laptop randomly shuts down abruptly when I'm using it on a hard stable surface that does not block any vents. This does not necessarily happen when it is under a heavy load. When it happens, the laptop suddenly shuts down and the screen suddenly goes black. I have to wait about 5 to 10 minutes for it to be willing to turn back on again. This happens one to three times a day, and it is completely unpredictable. Below is a graph of various temperatures up until the point when it shuts down. None of these temperatures are high enough for me to suspect that this issue is caused by overheating.
I would really appreciate it if anyone had any insight into why these random shutdowns are happening. Thanks!

I suggest an Apple Hardware Test and see if that picks up any issues:

An appointment at an Apple genius bar seems like a good idea.  Since you say that the problem occurs when you pick up the MBP, you should be able to recreate it for the technicians.
Though I do not believe that it is connected with yo ur problem, I would suggest replacing the 1 GB RAM chip with a 2 GB RAM chip.  That is the best RAM combination for your MBP.
    Ciao.

  • Why is my macbook pro randomly shutting down and restarting?

My macbook pro is randomly shutting down and restarting. It started a couple days ago and seems to happen completely randomly. I did a extended hardware test and no problems were found. I reset the SMC and that didn’t work. Battery is charged and I don’t think its overheating. Im using Mavericks 10.9.1. Someone please help because I can’t even use my mac for anything lately and its really annoying.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post any other kind of report — it will be very long and not helpful.

  • Macbook Pro Randomly Shutting Down OFTEN

So within the last month my Macbook Pro has been randomly shutting off. It was very minor at first but now I can rarely get my Macbook to run more than 10-15 minutes without it just shutting off. My thing is I'm not sure if it's the power cord or something internally. I don't have a battery because it did the whole overheating expanding thing so I can't really test it with that.
I do notice though when it shut downs i'll unplug the cord and plug it back in and the little light on the cord won't light up for a few seconds or i'll plug it in, hit the power button on the Macbook and the light will actually flash off as i'm hitting it and not power up.
Let me also say that I got this Macbook Pro in like 2006 so I don't know if it's just like getting to the end of its life or what. Anybody have this issue or know what I can do to maybe determine the problem. I am a ways away from an Apple store and I know it is no longer under warranty. I could just be totally out of luck but I thought you guys may be able to help. Thank you!

  • Mid 2009 13.3" Macbook Pro random freezing issue

    Hi all,
I had a 2009 13.3" Unibody Macbook and last week purchased a 13.3" Macbook Pro. I had installed 4GB of RAM in the MB myself, and it had worked fine for the month I owned it.
I backed up my MB with an external USB hard drive using Time machine, restored from this backup on my MBP and moved the 4GB RAM over.
When using the MBP I get random freezes lasting between 1 and 3 seconds, occuring every 5 to 30 minutes.
Could someone please advise a good way to diagnose this problem further? I am guessing it is not the RAM as it worked fine whilst in the MB.

    I have an update!
I made an appointment with a local Apple Genius Bar and talked to a technian. He said it was neither the RAM nor the Hard Drive at fault.
His only thoughts were that a software issue was the root cause. I have been doing some serious investigating this morning and figured it out. Viewing system.log in Console shows:
SMS::infiniteIntTimerEventHandler ERROR: we have infinite interrupts, disabling
At exactly 5 minute intervals. These correlate with the freezes (to the second).
SMS refers to the Apple Sudden Motion Sensor. I disabled this by doing "sudo pmset -a sms 0" in Terminal, rebooted and everything is fine.
I have no idea why the SMS thinks the Macbook is falling every 5 minutes, but when it occures the hard drive heads are locked down to prevent damage, which is a perfect reason as to why iTunes would crash but Spotify (streaming internet music) does not.
    Problem solved!
    Edit:
In reply to some questions posted by other members (thank you by the way).
I did install EFI 1.7 update. I did not use the Migration assistance. At some point I will do a fresh install then pick and choose parts from a backup rather than using a full Time Machine Restore. This could still have been the root cause of the issue, but it is hard to tell.
    Thanks guys!
