You have the misfortune of owning a 2010 MBP that is experiencing GPU issues:

Make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a free evaluation.  You will be advised of your options.
Bring the kernel panic report with you.

  • MacBook Pro randomly shuts off and restarts a few seconds later

I brought my computer to the Apple store a couple months ago because the USB port was broken and my computer would randomly shut off. Long story short, they fixed the USB port, deleted all my files, and reinstalled Leopard. The random shut off problem still persists. I have a feeling it has something to do with the graphics card as it seems to happen more frequently when I'm using graphics intensive applications (photoshop, illustrator, autocad through vmware fusion, watching videos on a second screen, etc).
Has anyone had a similar problem? Should I just bring it to the Genius Bar again?

I know this is a really old thread, and everyone's probably already bought new computers now. However, I'm still using my 2010 MacBook Pro and have been experiencing this very frustrating issue. However, I think I just found a way to open a finder window that prevents the shut down. In Finder>Preferences>General, under "New Finder windows show", I had "All my files" selected (BAD?), which probably was the cause, because setting that to "Desktop" instead has prevented shut downs, for now. Just thought I should share this tip, in case anyone else suffers from this annoying issue.  If anyone has a better tip or a real fix, please post a reply! There are still people, like myself, working on these older machines who would appreciate the info. THANKS!

  • My 13inch MacBook Pro randomly shut off and won't turn on

My 13 inch MacBook Pro will not turn on at all. It randomly shut off while I was using it and now it won't come back on. The light on the charger is faintly blinking... But it is no longer charging. I tried a different outlet, and a different MacBook charger... Nothing. The screen is completely black and none of buttons or keys are responsive. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but it seems that it shut off not even one second after I connected my iPhone to it via USB. I guess I should include that this was the first time my iPhone was connected to my MacBook since upgrading to ios 6.0. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you..

    jc1122,
by “boot” I mean “use as the disk from which OS X will be run”. At the moment, all that is known is that your computer won’t start from its internal hard disk; my suggestion is to see whether it is able to start from your grey Mac OS X Install DVD, which is bootable (i.e. able to be used a disk from which OS X can be run).

  • My 2010 15 in. 2.66 Ghz i7 dual core macbook pro randomly shuts off and reboots

I am a student at a college, and I recently bought a used MacBook Pro from the computer store which is part of a 4 year turnaround program when Faculty get new machines. It is a 2010 15 in. 2.66 GHz i7 dual core MacBook Pro, and I have had it for almost 1 week. After I got it, I installed Office 365 and Microsoft Document Connection. Almost immediately after doing this, and when I opened a Office application, it shut down. So I thought that installing Office 365 was somehow causing the computer to shut down. But over the past week, I've had maybe 3 more random shut downs including when all Office applications were quit and thus inactive. They were pretty rare, so I actually thought it wasn't such a problem because they didn't interrupt my work too badly. The screen suddenly goes black with no warning, and then immediately without me doing anything the computer reboots to grey screen, apple logo with languages / licensing stuff, tells me I shut down my computer due to a problem do I want to return to the screen I was on with all my stuff on it?, I say yes and it quickly goes to the desktop with everything I was working on pulled up.
So I didn't mind too much until last night, when it shut down twice within rapid succession of one another. Shut down, reboot, within seconds of me clicking on mail or whatever, boom, shuts down, reboots again. That was annoying. Then this morning, I wake up, open my computer to do work, BOOM shut down 1, open again, try to work, this time I'm using Safari when boom shuts down again time #2 within 1 minute of last shut down, then BOOM shuts down A THIRD TIME this time within 5 minutes of the last shut down. But still 3 SHUT DOWN/ REBOOTS in 10 minutes. Needless to say this is extremely annoying. Also, these last three times it has been on Battery power, but last night it was plugged in, so I don't think it's a battery issue. Also, my computer was fully charged (or almost) this morning, so it's not like it's on really low battery or anything like that.
I checked this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5044196?start=30&tstart=0, and it seems like I may be having kernel panics due to a defective NVIDIA graphics card. How do I tell what is causing these shut down cycles? How do I get it fixed? Also, needless to say, this MacBook is 4 years old, and I am not the original owner / purchaser, so I'm sure it's out of warranty. Does anyone know how much this will cost me at the Apple Store?

    ggp057,
it could be due to the NVIDIA GPU defect in the 15-inch Mid 2010 models. It might also be due to faulty RAM. Do you know whether it has its factory-installed RAM, or if the RAM had been replaced? The GPU defect can be confirmed by making an appointment at your nearest Apple store to have them run their Video System Test on your MacBook Pro. Yes, it’s long out of warranty; the diagnostic test should be gratis, but if the defect is present, it typically costs a few hundred dollars to remedy (it involves a logic board replacement).
Did you also receive the two grey installation DVDs which originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro? Among other things, it has your model’s Apple Hardware Test. If you didn’t receive them, and the computer store is unable to provide them to you, then you can purchase a replacement pair from Apple. The Apple Hardware Test includes a RAM test, although it isn’t able to detect all possible RAM problems.

My Macbook pro randomly shut off. When i hit the power button, i can hear it start up, but after a click sound, it stops booting up.  help?

    Hi..
Try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
If that doesn't help, try Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters
When you post, please tell us which Mac OS X you have installed. Thanks

  • Macbook pro random shut off help

    I have a early 2011 macbook pro
its been having random shut off problems
i've tried reinstalling os, updating, resetting smc/pram/nvram
macbook will randomly shut off, sometimes few minutes into turning it on or hour or 2 of using it, its random
it'll shut off with the charger connected as well
it'll also shut off when using the battery, even when its around 90% charged.
Once it shuts off the battery indicator will show nothing but once pluged in to the charger and reboot, the indicator will show plenty of charge
is there something wrong with the battery or connection?
    here is my battery log

  • Macbook Pro Randomly Shuts Down and Restarts

    Hi There,
This issue appears to have occured for other people in different forms but there does not appear to have been a conclusive answer to the problem, so here's hoping someone here might be able to provide some further insight into the issue, and with some luck, a solution.
I have an early 2008 MacBook Pro running OS X 10.7.2 (plugged-in to power) that has started to randomly shut down and then restart itself (goes through all the start up screens; Apple logo etc.). It doesn't appear to be just a straight restart of the machine, but it shuts down, and then a couple of seconds later, reboots, as though it is two different actions...
The computer does this pretty randomly, and now quite often. It happens when applications are running, Safari for example, and when nothing is running and i just go to open Finder or use Spotlight.
I haven't had this issue in the past (some 3+ years of full time use now) and as far as i'm aware, nothing changed on the computer immediately prior to the issue occuring (no updates, installs etc.).
I've checked the systen log which, each time the issue occurs, returns the message 'Previous Shutdown Cause: -128'. I've sought reference as to what this refers to, but it would appear to be a mystery to the WWW.
I have tried the following solutions with no success:
    - Proper restart and reboot of system;
    - Repair permissions;
    - Reset SMC;
    - Reinstall OS X.
Any thoughts on what the problem is, what the '-128' refers to, or what more i can try to solve the issue?
Your help is much appreciated! Thanks.

THANKS!

  • Macbook pro randomly shutting off

Any suggestions why my laptop would randomly shut off? It's been happening for weeks. Have a fan under it and genius bar tested for hardware issue and said it's not hardware. any ideas?

    lfbtennis,
since you have a 15-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro with OS X 10.7.5 installed, you have Recovery mode available to you. Hold down a Command key and the R key as you restart to boot into Recovery mode. Eventually a Mac OS X Utilities menu will appear. Select Disk Utility from that menu. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select the icon that corresponds to your boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that it found errors, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to reboot into normal mode. Try using it as you normally would, and see if the random shutdowns still occur.

  • Macbook Pro randomly shuts off

I have owned my Macbook Pro for about 14 months and haven't had a problem with it until a few months ago... it started to randomly shut off (as if it was going to sleep) and then come back on to wherever I was on my screen. Now it completely shuts off for a good 5-10 minutes and if I leave it (without pressing the power button) it will finally turn back on. One night I was working on my computer it shut off a good 5 or 6 times within a few minutes! It happens when the computer is plugged into the power adapter and when it's strictly running on the battery.
Has anyone dealt with this before? I called the Apple support line when it first started happening but I was past the 90 days support and the guy didn't help me with it unless I purchased the Apple Protection Plan. Unfortunately I didn't have enough money to get the Protection Plan in time before the deadline went by.
    HELP!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Reset the SMC (System Management Controller) and re-calibrate the Battery then see how it behaves.

  • Macbook air randomly shuts off and won't turn back on

I have a 2011 Macbook Air that was given to me by my sister. She told me about a year ago she spilled water on the keyboard and it stopped working for a while. She took it to apple and they told her it was going to cost 700 dollars to replace so she decided not to. After a while the laptop randomly turned back on and started working fine. I ended up getting it as a free gift and it was working perfectly fine for about a month and a half until recently it randomly shut off on me. After it shuts off, it wouldn't turn back on through pressing the power button I left it alone and after a day it randomly turned back on and worked like normal. After about 15 minutes of use it randomly shuts down and won't turn back on. I tried resetting SMC to no avail. It randomly turns on for about 15 minutes before it feels like it gets slightly hot and shuts off. Any help will be great!

Try running an Apple Hardware Test:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
If you find you can't, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  The evaluation will be free and then you should know what the problems are with your MBA.
    Ciao.

  • Why is my macbook pro randomly shutting down and restarting?

My macbook pro is randomly shutting down and restarting. It started a couple days ago and seems to happen completely randomly. I did a extended hardware test and no problems were found. I reset the SMC and that didn’t work. Battery is charged and I don’t think its overheating. Im using Mavericks 10.9.1. Someone please help because I can’t even use my mac for anything lately and its really annoying.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post any other kind of report — it will be very long and not helpful.

  • When I plugged in my portable charger to my MacBook Pro, it shut off and now I can't turn it back on. What do I do?

I was launching my sims game when I plugged in my portable charger in my MacBook Pro. As soon as I plugged it in, I heard a tiny poof and next thing I know the screen turned black. I held down the power button like I normally would and it wouldn't work. when I plug in the charger, there is a faint green light. Please help anybody. Thank you for your time.

Something broke I'm afraid. Take it (and the charger) to an Apple Store, leave it unplugged.
