MacBook Pro Randomnly started Overheating badly

Hey There,
I have a Mid 2011 Macbook Pro 15" Which i've had since Summer of 2011. I primarily use it for Music Production and DJing. Last week, my mbp started acting funny as i was watching a movie using VLC player. The screen was covered in Light green and Purple zig zaggy type lines all around, and the computer froze. So i had no choice but to do a hard shutdown (Hold the power button down). After that instance, my computer would freeze after 5 or 6 hours of use and i noticed that the fan was really loud aka working really hard. Touching the bottom of the MBP, it was really hot. That was last week. Now, when i turn on my MBP, i see the white boot up screen with the apple, but there are tons of lines going from left to right in that same light green color that i saw while watching the video. Seems to be the Graphic card was acting funny but then the spinning loading symbol came under the apple, and then the screen would turn the normal boot white color, with the apple gone, and the fan would get ridicuiously loud and then the computer would just shut down on its own. i Restarted the computer, and it booted up fine giving me an error saying "Your mbp has been shutdown cus of a problem" or something like that. After a few hours of work, the MBP just froze again. No zig zaggy lines this time, just an instant freeze. I hard powered it again but NOW, when i boot up the computer, the horizontal lines return, then the apple goes away and the fan goes crazy, and then it shuts down again. I thought maybe it's running too hot, so i stuck it in the fridge for 10 minutes... removed it.. waited for it to get back to room temp (or close to) and tried booting again but the same has been happening over and over. Im freaking out because i have a huge DJ gig next weekend, and i must have my laptop. I pray to god, non of my files were affected by this. I do have the computer backed up but its not a recent backup. Maybe a month behind...

After that video was shot, maybe 2 minutes after.. it just shut down on its own. I did some research online and some people are saying a MBP is designed to shut down when it gets to a certain temp. This video was shot tonight.. Tuesday morning 2:45 AM. i'm about to schedule an appointment with my local apple store, but having a computer from 2011, my apple care is gone, so i bet whatever is going to happen as far as fixing through them goes, its going to cost an arm and a leg.

Did you try an SMC reset too? It's easily done and none of those resets to the best of my knowledge hurt anything. When I was fooling with my system, which at one point was a home made Fusion setup, I needed to reset the SMC sometimes to get the drives recognized. Reading the documentation the sudden motion sensor is drive related but that seems to be about it.
Some more specifics may be needed about the drive itself, the model number of your unit, and the OS version you're running.
At present, the problem seems sort of odd to me. FWIW cable problems can be quite intermittent. I used Scannerz to find some of the problems on my original system that I later converted to a new HD and SSD combo. It can find lots of problems if you learn how to use it right (HD problems, logic board system faults, and cable problems) but you need to get a system at least partially up and running to use it, and it doesn't sound to me like your there right now (in other words, don't go out and buy it because at this point I don't know how it could help you)
Another word of advice would be to not go out and start throwing parts at a problem unless you have a good idea what the source of the problem is. If you have a logic board problem, new drives and new cables won't make it go away, you'll just be wasting your money. Logic board problems, cable problems, and drive problems can all have very similar end user symptoms. The article that I linked above named "Hard Drive Problems" has a section on general symptoms of problems and if you read the article it becomes clear there's a lot of overlap associated with different types of problems.
I assume that your unit isn't under warranty. If, by chance it is I wouldn't even fool with it and I'd take it to Apple and let them deal with the problem. You also might want to check with whatever Apple sources you have available to test your system, like an Apple store, and see how much they'll charge (if anything) to evaluate the system.

After you have installed the OSX on the new HDD in your MBP, install the old HDD in an enclosure and connect it to your MBP via USB. Then try to drag and drop your data to the new HDD.
If this proves unsuccessful, you may look for data recovery software on the Internet. There will be free trails to see if it will work or not. If the trial suggests that it will work, then you will have to purchase the software.
The last resort is a professional data recovery service that will offer NO guarantees and charge a lot of money.
As you now can appreciate, backups eliminate such predicaments.

70 hours... no, it's not normal but it can't hurt your Mac to be running for that amount of time.

Your computer can't find a boot drive. It's possible that your hard drive is dead/dying or that your MBP has simply 'forgotten' your startup drive. Try rebooting while holding down the option key and see if your internal drive shows up as an option to boot from.
You really need to have a copy of the installation disc(s) that came with your MBP. You can order a set by calling Apple - I don't know the number, but there's a store in Amserdam - http://www.apple.com/nl/retail/amsterdam/.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

My macbook pro has started running slowly. Particularly the internet (firefox and safari). I have tried repairing the disk / verifying the disk and the permissions via Disk Utility, and have also tried uninstalling and re-installing firefox, and updating the software (all up to date). None of this has helped.
The old Dell laptop we have is running faster than my mac!
I also have Parallels Desktop Installed with Windows 7, although this has never caused a problem in the past...
I am running with Mac OS X, Version 10.6.8, processor 2.66Ghz Intel Core Duo, and 4GB memory (it's normally lightning fast!).
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

This is a known problem with Parallels and the recent update for 10.6.8. You do not need to actually have Parallels running to experience the problem and there is nothing in Activity Monitor that would indicate the issue is related to Parallels. It is taking forever for my MacBook pro to start up. It's been on the screen with the grey apple and the spinning icon for about 20 minutes now. I tried holding down the shift button when powering up to reboot in safe mood but that is taking forever as well. Any suggestions?

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

I have the same problem. I have a white macbook 2010, with mavericks os. I just found my mac not powering on and then I tried to run it on safe mode by holding the shift button but it will turn off seconds after I let go of the shift button. I am able to access the desktop and use it while holding the shift button the whole time. It's a bit slower than before but I figured maybe it's because of holding down shift button.
I went to the Apple Store to have them look at my mac and I was told it's a failed hard disk. I wasn't told why he was able to conclude that a failed hard disk is causing the problem, I was just told to get a replacement. But the thing is when I ran Disk Utility it says, "disk appears to be okay." So I also feel like it's possible it's not a hard disk issue because it's also the first time it happened. My mac was working perfectly fine before all this.
Do you know anything else that could cause this problem? Were you able to find out what's wrong?

My macbook pro (2011) starts up very slow and has other startup resolution

I have two problems:
My Macbook pro (Lion) starts up very slow. Many things seem to happen during startup. The screen goes small, blue, back and many times the loginscreen is coming up in a lower resolution. When I do a Pram reset it starts up with the correct resolution but after a couple of startups it goes back to 800x600 resolution (I guess). When I Log in the resolution is ok so only the login screen is a lower resolution.
Can anybody tell me what can be wrong here?
And if there is a solution beyond resetting the PRAM?

For the screen resloution problem:
I don't know if you have solved your problem yet but i had the same exact problem this morning and was able to find the solution and fix it.
All you have to do is safe-boot your machine (hold shift key during restarting/booting) and after the next restart it should be fine.

Hi Ralph, thanx for your quick answer...
The thing is that I could get tothe login screen but once i got my password introduced, the status bar froze like at 45% and then nothing else happened.
I decided to get back to mavericks, which I did but after several hours installing/downloading from a bootable pendrive that I have with Mavericks on it, when the time came to install an error kept occurring so I just had to take out the hard drive, save my data and swipe all of it out so I could perform a clean installation with a formatted disk, which due to little time left at the office, will perform today when I get there in the morning. Thank you again, I'll write againwhen I finish installing Yosemite, hopefully without trouble.
