MacBook Pro Reset?

My MacBook is going through a huge host of problems. I just had the harddrive replaced but now it appears I need to replace the logic board cable and/or logic board. It was working fine this morning then it powered down. Now when I power it up it will only open the OS X Utilities - restore from time machine backup; reinstall OS X; get help online; and disk utility. I can't restore it because my external was recently stolen thanks to a lovely gentleman who broke into my apartment, bypassed my MacBook and stole my hard drive; I ran disk utility and repaired the MacIntosh HD which now says its fine. I can't reinstall OS X because my computer was formerly a work computer so my Mountain Lion upgrade was purchased under the Apple ID of the company I formerly worked for. If I need to reinstall the OS, I would happily pay for it, but I can't open the app store to purchase it. Can anyone help?

I just realized I made an error - I didn't have Mountain Lion, I had LION. So if I have to reinstall I'll have to upgrade to Mountain Lion, I guess? But I have no idea how I'm going to do that since I can't open the app store.

  • Mid-2010 MacBook Pro Resets Itself

I bought my 13" Macbook Pro in September of last year. Lately it has intermittently started resetting itself, meaning in the middle of whatever I'm working on, my screen will suddenly turn a light blue color, then the desktop will reload afresh, with all the applications I'd been working on previously no longer open. It seems to happen when I'm switching between programs, primarily when I'm switching back to Safari or Word, but that may just be coincidence. It's frustrating, but I haven't lost any data yet. I've run all software updates, if that makes any difference.
    Any thoughts? Thanks!

I suppose I should have mentioned that I've been making frequent Time Machine backups and save my most important files in cloud storage. I'm certainly not averse to making a Genius Bar appointment, but I do have reservations about how much they'll be able to help given that I can't reproduce the problem at will.

  • ITunes on macbook pro - resetting music file path when not on my network

    Hi there!
I suspect I know the answer to this already, but I hope I'm wrong! :-D
I have my macbook a while now, but I've only recently started using iTunes properly.
I have a home network, which consists of my macbook pro, a dell laptop running XP, a Nintendo Wii, a Sumvision Netbox NAS 1TB drive and a Logitech Squeezebox Boom.
I'm using the NAS as my music storage, iTunes rips music and stores it here.
    This is all good.
The Squeezebox Boom (for anyone who doesn't know) is a neat little Wifi radio/mp3 player, it streams radio from the web, and also music from the NAS.
The software that controls it is called the Squeeze center.
At the moment I have this software linked to iTunes, so when I add music to my library via iTunes the squeeze center automatically scans the music library and updates itself taking in music details, play lists, art work and all, it's a great system.
The problem I have is when I take my laptop anywhere, iTunes changes the iTunes music folder location automatically to the internal hard drive, which means when I get home again I have to reset the file path and iTunes then has to scan the folder and organise everything again.
not only that, as soon as the squeeze center sees the file path has changed it points at the new location (on the macbook hard drive) and looses the library.
so when I reset iTunes, the squeeze center has to rescan everything again also.
    It's quite annoying.
I have a work around in that I can tell the squeezecenter not to look at iTunes and hard wire it to the location, but I'd rather not do that.
Is it possible to get iTunes to keep the NAS music folder as the iTunes Music folder location even when the macbook isn't on the network?
Or will it always change the folder when I leave the network.
    Many thanks for your help.
    Paul.

I've had this problem for ages, only now it seems as though iTunes is no longer restoring my music folder to the NAS if I start it when the NAS is connected. This is proving a pain in the a** because I keep forgetting about it, going online and buying a load of music from the store and then I find I've got a gig to consolidate when I realise my music folder has filled up! Funnily enough, I've downloaded and edited an applescript that automatically checks every half hour whether or not I'm on my home network, if I am it mounts my network drive for me. I really miss the airport disk utility's automatic mount feature. What I think I'l do is create another one for iTunes, to serve as a shortcut to iTunes, but when it's run it will check to see if you're on your home network, if so mount the NAS (if it isn't already), if not, or if it can't mount it will ask you whether you want to run iTunes after warning you that your NAS isn't connected. The only potential problem I could see is when iTunes runs as a result of you opening a music file in Finder. However I'm sure we could associate the applescript 'shortcut' with music instead of iTunes? I'll post here if and when I'm successful.

  • Imac and Macbook  Pro reset parameters issue

    Looking for advice please.
Both my Imac and Macbook pro have not resonded upon startup and I have had to reset the paramters on several occassions.
Can anyone advise why this may have happened.  Both computers less than 4 months old.
    Thanks

Sometimes files get corrupt or lose their permissions this is normal part of most operating systems. When you lose permissions to a file it will not let you read or write to that file.  This can cause problems with your system because to do work on your system you need to have access to read and write to some files.

  • MacBook Pro reset clock with lost idisk data files

    Hi,
I opened my MacBook pro this morning but it had reset the clock back to Jan 01, 2001 and had also lost all wireless passwords. This I have manually updated again which is fine but my iDisk on mobile me has reset itself to November 2010 meaning I have lost all files from then. As this is my primary method of storing my data as I work across multiple computers I am now stuck. Is there any way of recovering this data?

Is the information on your computer at all or on an external drive of some sort? The only group that really would be able to assist you with that is going to:
    www.apple.com/support/mobile
It is chat based support but unfortunately it's the only support apple has for mobile me as of right now, I am not sure if they keep backups of your backups. Sorry to hear about that, that's weird how it changed your date... did that happen after a softare update or something?

  • HT1291 MacBook Pro Reset to factory settings.

I have a new MacBook Pro that is right out of the box.  During the data migration from the PC power was interrupted and I've been told I need to start over.  But after several tries I keep loosing the conection and I think I need to start over.  How do I reset a 2013 MacBook Pro to the factory settings?

To reset your computer, use OS X Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 Follow these steps:
    1. Press Command and R keys while your Mac is starting to start into OS X Recovery, and open Disk Utility.
    2. Select Macintosh HD on the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk.
    3. Close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X. After installing OS X, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore the backup, so do it

  • MacBook Pro reset/Snow Leopard Install

    Hi,
I'm updating an old MacBook Pro to Snow Leopard... well trying.
I have the install disc from Apple (brand new), but when I try to install I get about two thirds of the way though and get an error message. The machine is definitely up to spec, but the laptop is old. I just feel that if I could wipe the hard-drive and start again it would be ok. Is this possible?
Everything is backed up, so I just need some instruction on how to get the MacBook back to some kind of 'default' setting.
    Thanks!

Booted from the DVD, select Utilities/Disk Utility - run repair disk and repair permissions until you get no errors. Select the partition tab, select the partition, hit Options/GUID, and reformat Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Then tried the OS installation again.

  • My late 2008 15" MacBook Pro resets itself.

Ok, I'm starting to believe there is a ghost in my house. I have a late 2008 15" Unibody MacBook Pro with a 2.93 Intel Core 2 Duo. Sometimes, when I leave the room, I'lll come back and the computer is back on the log in screen. It's runnning 10.6.8. I"m I going crazy or is this something that just heppens. I'm thinking of making a genius bar appointment because there is still 9 months left on my AppleCare warranty. Anyone else had any problems like this. I thought maybe the unit was overheating, but I'm only searching the internet and somtimes writing an essay for class, nothing major. Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can install the new hard disk yourself if you want to. You just need a 2'5" SATA II hard drive, which is compatible with your MacBook Pro. You can buy one at OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ You can filter hard drives by computer, so press a "Click to view all...", choose your computer in the sidebar and it will give you the compatible hard drives.
There are different brands for the MacBook Pro. The most recommended are HGST and Seagate, which have good reputation. A 7200 rpm hard drive will give you extra performance

    Welcome to the forum.
Did you, by chance, rename your Home Directory? Your user's folder with the House icon. If you did just follow the steps outlined in the following Apple KB Document and all will be well again:

  • I need guidance on restoring apps & MS Office to MacBook Pro

HI. I have recently had my MacBook Pro reset to factory settings, and had OS X Yosemite installed from scratch. I have taking a Time Machine backup before the laptop was passed to Apple Store for solving the upgrade to Yosemite OS X.
When I got laptop back, i was assisted by Apple genius staff until I mentioned I need to re-install MS Office, which had been installed on PC at date of purchase. I have no disk for reinstall of MS Office. Can I recovery this application from backup, or do I need to contact Microsoft to assist with its reinstallation?
There are other apps that I would want to reinstall.
ON opening the laptop, I get to a screen where I have the optio of  recovery from Time Machine backup or to continue without recovery. I was advised that I could partition the recovery files from the existing OS, so that the new OS is not over-written from backup files.
Do I re-open laptop and follow onscreen options, and select recovery from Time Machine, and then select specific files to restore? Alternatively, do I turn on my laptop, by using (Crtl/R), and use the recovery fiction to restore specific files only?
PLease advise me on the best way to perform the recovery of fils & applications from Time Machine backup. Please give instruction in a simple manner as I am not very tech experience in this subject.

  • Can anyone help.  For security reasons I reset my admin password on my Macbook Pro a few days ago and didn't write it down.  Now I've forgotten it.  I didnt receive an installation disc when I purchased my Macbook Pro online - it didn't come with one-help

Please see question above, but also note, I have the Applecare Protection Plan but am unable to get through to anyone on a weekend and I desperately need to use my laptop this weekend.  I can't log in at all now as I've forgotten my admin password.  A few weeks ago I also changed the password on my husband's new MacBook Pro and again forgot the password.  I spoke to someone at Apple and they helped me to reset it within minutes, by restarting the computer holding Command+something else (I can't remember what it was). A black screen with writing came up and I had to type in something like "password" (not sure exactly).  Anyway, this was a very quick and efficient process but I didn't write it down unfortunately.  Does anyone out there know what to do?  Thanks in anticipation

  • Macbook Pro mid 2009 will not boot unless SMC is reset (macbookpro5,5)

    Hello!
I have a mid-2009 Macbook Pro (macbookpro5,5) and I've had this weird issue for like a month, and I ran out of ideas.
So my problem is: whenever I turn on my mbp (either on OS X or Windows 7) it will go to sleep (on OS X after it shows the login screen and on Windows when it's loading) and when it wakes up, *it goes to sleep again*!
I kinda panicked back then because I couldn't get to boot the machine for all what was worth, but then I tried resetting the SMC and voila! it booted; and I thought that was it, but no, it wasn't: *I have to reset the SMC everytime I turn on the mbp*, or else the same sleeping loop will happen again and again.
This happened after installing the first March Update that Apple released (which misteriously only addressed iTunes issues - supposedly) on OS X. I already tried looking for SMC or EFI updates (just in case) and I already have the current versions (just EFI, SMC updates were never released for this mbp) so now I have no clue on what to do...
And what really puzzles me is that I disabled sleep when closing the lid on Windows 7, and it worked fine, but after this issue, it just goes to sleep, even when I see the closing the lid option on "do nothing", it's just weird.
Does anybody had some sort of trouble like that?? or anyone has some hints that may help me??
    Message was edited by: piku9000

Well, it seems that apple fixed this issue in the 10.6.7 update. I kinda wish there was a little more documentation about the patches released and what files they modify, since no update was released to the SMC, I have no idea why it had to modify it. Anyway, thanks for the help!

  • Mid 2010 MacBook Pro Keeps Hard Resetting

    Hi,
I have had my MacBook pro 4 years now since new and for the past week it has started to experience issues. I am running OS X 10.8.4 and it is all up to date. This did not start as a result of adding new software or plugging in any new hardware it just seemed to start by itself.
Sometimes when I turn off my MacBook (either by clicking shutdown or pressing the power button and clicking on the shutdown) it then seems to freeze for a second and then do a hard shutdown - it usually turns itself back on again and then I get the error message on startup saying that my computer restarted because of a problem.
Sometimes when I turn my MacBook on it will not turn on - I can hear the chime but the screen stays black (the keyboard lights do come on) - I have to hold down the power button and try again.
Sometimes when I wake my MacBook from sleep it will do a hard reset similar to above.
I have also had it hard resetting when I open a specific application (Brackets, and today I have tried updating my Java and 3 times in a row mid way through the download it hard reset).
So far I have tried resetting the PRAM and the SMC, I have also verified my hard drive (states it is OK) and the disk permissions (when I verify the disk permissions I get lots of errors about itunes content which when I repair the disk permissions it does not seem to repair as next time I try it is the same again).
There does not seem to be any common theme to any of these as some days it will be fine and others it might take 5 atempts to turn it on and then off again.
When it hard resets and starts up again it get an error log such as this one:
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff7f8de96f1a): "GPU Panic: [<None>] 3 3 7f 0 0 0 0 3 : NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00004160: CFG 0xffffffff 0xffffffff 0xffffffff, BAR0 0xd2000000 0xffffff8098a20000 0x0a5480a2, D0, P0/4\n"@/SourceCache/AppleGraphicsControl/AppleGraphicsControl-3.4.5/src/AppleM uxControl/kext/GPUPanic.cpp:127
