MacBook Pro Restore Impossible-Puzzling

My daughter's Mac Book Pro (circa May 2011) was upgraded to Lion from Snow Leopard when she purchased it.  I think it was a display model.  The computer would shut down in the middle of the boot sequence recently with a number of file and access list errors and mismatches that were visible when I observed the boot screen.  I worked through Apple Chat and I'm exhausted.  I have replaced the HDD upon their recommendation and tried the internet recovery option.  That fails because the reload requires logging on to iTunes (not a problem).  I think I finally got it beat, but then iTunes returns with "the file is temporarily unavailable".  They, Apple, have sent me a Lion USB drive and even a Snow Leopard system recovery DVD.  I am very familiar with DU, partitioning, formatting (Mac OS Extended - Journaled)  NOTHING has worked.  It might be time to put this Mac out to pasture.  Any recommendations?

Thank you for the picture.  This is new to me since I was expecting the disk to be a white retail disk or a gray original install disk.  The picture show neither and also does not show the exact OSX and the version.  Based on the printed date I would think the it would be Snow leopard.  What I thought may be the problem was that the disk that you were using was an OSX version prior to the one that came with the MBP.  For me that question remains unanswered.
May I assume that you have a early 13" 2011 MBP?  This can be checked by entering the serial number (on the bottom) here:
https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
I would contact Apple and verify if indeed the install DVD is the correct one.  The serial number printed on it has no meaning for me.
Have you tried using the Lion installer?
Last stop is the Apple store genius bar.  Csound1 may have better ideas.
Ciao.

  • MacBook Pro "restore"  I lost very important documents - please help!

Hello! I recently did a restore on my MacBook Pro- that was not smart as I have now lost a ton of documents and I really need those back. I should have icloud and I have time machine.  Please tell me if those documents are out there and how I can retrieve them?  I would be happy to go back to the status I was a few days ago before the restore.
I did the restore due to some internet connection issues.
Are the docuements in my time machine?  Sorry!! I dont speak Mac very well!
    Thank you for the advice.

    Hi RHarney,
If you backed up your documents on an external hard drive via time machine then all you have to do is hookup your external hard drive and turn your time machine on.
Just follow these steps on this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akfp3MtyFCY

  • New Macbook Pro Restore Time Machine backup?

How can I restore a time machine backup on a new MacBook Pro?
    Thanks!

Not brand new, a few months old, already installed progams I wanted to carry over.  Now i was trying to do the Migration assist for the files I want and now I'm getting this message:

  • Connecting to my macbook pro is impossible

I have been trying for 5 days to connect my macbook air 13" mid 2011 to my macbook pro 13" mid 2012 using thunderbolt cable and several times it connects and the disconnects on its own and now not even that. Both macs are running Mavericks.

One potential for poor data transfer rate performance is limited wireless bandwidth. It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference in the area that is preventing your Wi-Fi router from providing a clean RF signal. Which, in turn, results in lower bandwidth available for all wireless network clients.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like iStumbler, or AirRadar to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible.

  • Macbook Pro Restore without disk

    Hi everyone,
I have a Macbook Pro bought in 2009. I had both OS and Windows XP installed. My friend did something to it and now it just directly boots into XP, and you don't have the choice to delete XP partition in OS Bootcamp (cuz OS doesn't even boot up). I'm planning to reinstall the OS and discard XP, but I don't have the installation or recovery disk. What can I do? Please advise and it will be very much appreciated! Thanks!
    Nathan

We cannot begin to help you without a recovery disc or at least some installation discs to a brand new OS X.  Maybe if you call Apple nicely, they'll send you some.  But I'm not sure they'll do that for a 2 year old Mac.  I'd go over to an Apple Store and buy Snow Leopard and start again.

  • Macbook pro locked impossible to reinstall the system

Hi guys. I have a big problem with my macbook pro bought in september 2009. Recently I have uninstalled the system in order to make it run better : big mistake. Now, when I insert the install dvdand push the option key to reinstall the system, the computer is showing a locked padlock with a place to put a password. I have tried all my password even my apple ID one, thinking that may from icloud but it doesn't work. Help me please....

No that sounds like a EFI boot password. Try holding down the C key (No Caps) to boot directly from the DVD drive.
If it is a EFI boot password and you have no idea how it got there your only option is to take to an Apple store and see if they can remove it.

I have purchased a used mac. Orignal owner not known
Means the previous owner did not restore the machine back to Snow Leopard before selling it.
    Solution
1: Determine the serial number of the Mac since it's not booting
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1559
2: Follow the instructions here and enter last three or four digits of the serial number to determine the model of the machine
    http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/
3: Your going to need to know something like "MacBook Pro 5,2" or something like that.
MacBook Pro's 5,2, 5,1, and earlier can use the 10.6 white retail disks sold by Apple online
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
MacBook Pro's 6,2, 6,3 etc and later need to call Apple for machine specific versions of the disks, they will ask for the serial number to comfirm the model as well becaues machine specific disks have drivers for only that model of hardware.
4: Once you have the disks, follow these directions and erase the ENTIRE drive because there are hidden partitions that need to be removed first before Snow Leopard can be properly installed.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
5: Once 10.6 is installed, then setup and log in, then Software Update fully until your on 10.6.8, if you choose after that you can purchase OS X 10.8 in the app store, which is a next level OS X after Lion.
6: If that machine won't upgrade to 10.8, and you want 10.7 Lion, you can call Apple and order it.

  • Impossible to connect to iTunes Store from my MacBook Pro

    Hello everyone,
I have a MacBook Pro 10.4.11. I never had problems connecting to the iTunes Store before but recently it's been just impossible to do it. Everytime i open my iTunes and click on iTunes Store, a window pops out with the following message:
The version i currently have is 7 (i can't install the newest one as it's not supported by my operative system).
Right, my internet connection works perfectly and i don't think that the problem is that the store is busy (specially for almost one week! ).  I've been going through every forum i stumble across but unfortunately i don't find any discussion that can help to solve my problem.
Besides, I had to restore my computer to factory settings and I'm thinking that this probably affected some settings that normally enable me to connect to iTunes store (but i'm just speculating). I've been checking and trying everything (settings, connection, etc) but nothing seems to work for me.
I really hope that someone out there can suggest something, i'm not an expert and this is driving me nuts.
    Many thanks!

Yes, i tried all the suggestions one by one and it's rather difficult to do something wrong if one follow the steps.
The only thing is that when i tried to find out whether the hosts file is blocking the iTunes Store, i couldn't complete the operation as a different window from the one that i was supposed to visualise when opening Terminal popped out.
I think i'll have to take my computer to an Apple Store

  • How to restore from time machine after HDD upgrade on macbook pro?

    Hi,
I have recently bought a WD 2.5 inch SATA 750GB 7200RPM 16GB HDD and plan to use it on my macbook pro 13 inch 2.4ghz early 2011. I will leave the pysical installation part to Apple Service. I have my Time Machine backup on an external hard disk. So, once I get the upgraded macbook, what are the steps I should follow for a complete Time Machine restore? (Including the formatting on the new HDD).
One more question; when I transfer my applications to the new HDD will Time Machine "remember" their activation codes and license information ?
    Thanks a lot.

    http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/14.html
This has all the instructions for a complete restore, including how to format the disk. Pondini's site probably has anything else you want to know too.
    Good luck!

  • I made the wrong choice when I connected my new iPhone 5 to my MacBook Pro for the first time (lost ALL my new photos because it restored settings that were 9 months old) - can I re-do this somehow and configure it as a new phone?

I connected my new iPhone 5 to my (now fully updated after two separate operating system upgrades!) MacBook Pro so that I could add my music to my new phone.  Rather than configuring it as a new iPhone, I chose to configure it as my old iPhone, thinking that this would make it easier for my music to be there.  WRONG.  Now my new iPhone 5 looks exactly like my old iPhone 4 did in OCTOBER, 2012 - photos, messages, contacts... anything done since then is gone (that was the last time I had backed up my old phone, which unfortunately was not connected to the cloud and is also lost somewhere in a New England lake :-().  What I could really, really use help with is finding out if I can have a do-over on my choice and at least get my new phone looking/acting like the new phone it is, and bonus would be to have the photos and videos I took with it this past weekend (it's only five days old!) restored.  Please help!

Look iTunes>Preferences>Devices...is a backup listed for your iPhone 5 dated BEFORE you restored your iPhone 4 backup to your iPhone 5? If not, your data is gone. If there is a backup, on your iPhone 5: Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings. You should now be able to restore that backup, if it exists, to your iPhone 5.

  • My MacBook Pro won't let me mount my external Hard Drive. Just trying to restore my iTunes library.

My MacBook Pro, less than a year old, started acting weird. I backed everything up, took it in to Best Buy, who sent it out to Apple Repair and they put in a new motherboard.
It's running on Mac OS X Version 10.7.4
Now I am trying to put everything back on the computer from my external Maxtor 80GB Hard Drive. MacBook Pro won't recognize the external drive.
I tried Disk Utility. I can see the external drive, and did a repair disk and verify disk. Several times. Each time it says "This partition map seems to be ok."
However, I am not able to mount it, as that option is greyed out and i can't select it.
Also, under the Icon for the external hard drive, it has the Macintosh HD Icon (essentially my computer). I tried to restore this way, didn't work.
I need this to mount, as it has all of my itunes stuff on it; dozens of my sons movies, and my entire iTunes library.
PLEASE HEEEEELP!! HOW CAN I MOUNT THIS EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE? Thank you in advance

  • Is there a way to restore more than one MacBook Pro at the same time from an image? .

I restore each MacBook Pro one at a time from an Mountain Lion image on a firewire Hard Drive but each MacBook has to be done one at a time. When I re-image the PC's here at work I'm able to Ghost as many laptops I want simultaneously.
    Thank you

They are a few different models of the MacBook Pro ranging from 15.4" i7's to 17" i7's. I would use the same models together though when imaging them just like I do with PC's. For example I would Ghost 5 Lenovo T420 Thinkpads at the same time which all share the same exact specs and config. Looking to do the same with the MBP. I have .dmg image of OSX 10.8.1 on a firewire drive which I'm using. I image all my MBP's with this drive, the only downside is I have to do each MBP one at a time.
    Thanks

  • I restored my Macbook Pro and now I can't log in as Admin - it says there is an error with FileVault and I don't have access - plz help!  thank you.

I had to restore my Macbook Pro from Time Capsule yesterday and now when I go to log in as my usual Admin, it says there is a FileVault error and my access is denied.  I created another temporary Admin acct, but everything I had on my desktop, etc is "gone"  I can look up the "drive' or wahtever it's called, but I can't access any of it.  All I want to do is log back in as my usual self (the regular Admin) - plz help!  Thanks.   p.s. I"m (obviously) not that computer savvy!

Triple-click the line below to select it:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Directory Utility.app
Rght-click or control-click the highlighted text and select
    Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu.* The application Directory Utility will open.
In the Directory Utility window, click the lock icon and authenticate. Select the Directory Editor tool in the toolbar. Select Users from the Viewing menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Select the affected user account in the list. On the right is a list of properties and values. Select the property "HomeDirectory" and delete it by clicking the minus-sign icon directly below the property list. There are two such icons in the window. You want the one on the right, not the one on the left.
CAUTION: Do not click the minus-sign icon on the left, below the user list.
Then click the Save button in the lower right corner of the window. Quit Directory Utility.
CAUTION: There is no "undo" in Directory Utility. If you make a mistake and delete something in the Directory Editor that should not have been deleted, restore your whole system from a backup and start over. I have no other help to offer in that case.
Try again to log in as the affected user. If you can log in, you should find a file in the home folder with the name of the user and the filename extension "sparseimage" or "sparsebundle". Double-click that file. A disk image should open. Copy your files from that disk image to restore them.
I strongly suggest that you deactivate legacy FileVault in the Security & Privacy preference pane, then log out and log back in. Consider activating FileVault 2 if you want that kind of security.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.
