Macbook Pro Restore without disk

Hi everyone,
I have a Macbook Pro bought in 2009. I had both OS and Windows XP installed. My friend did something to it and now it just directly boots into XP, and you don't have the choice to delete XP partition in OS Bootcamp (cuz OS doesn't even boot up). I'm planning to reinstall the OS and discard XP, but I don't have the installation or recovery disk. What can I do? Please advise and it will be very much appreciated! Thanks!

We cannot begin to help you without a recovery disc or at least some installation discs to a brand new OS X. Maybe if you call Apple nicely, they'll send you some. But I'm not sure they'll do that for a 2 year old Mac. I'd go over to an Apple Store and buy Snow Leopard and start again.

I am so new to Mac. I just bought this Macbook Pro. No Disks or anything. I need to completely wipe and reinstall. Is there anyplace I can download the disks to burn to dvd to do a complete wipe and reinstall? I'm running 10.6.8. Or maybe a later version

First determine what system you really have.
Apple menu -> About This Mac.
If it is 10.7, you don't need installer discs, because there is a recovery partition:

If indeed it is 10.6.something then you'll want to call AppleCare for the discs.

If they determine the machine is older than 10.6's initial release (August 28, 2009), you'll want to purchase 10.6 retail, and/or 10.7 retail from the Apple Store.

How do I clear my MacBook Pro HD using Disk Utility?

I'm not sure if my MacBook Pro specifications are necessary, so I'll skip those for the time being, but I have a 2009 release which already had OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard on it and came with both the OS X Install DVD and Applications Install DVD for this in case I needed to clear my HD for whatever reason and start over. I skipped Lion and upgraded straight to Mountain Lion when it came out, which I paid for and finally yesterday, I upgraded to Mavericks. This was all through the App Store.
My questions are:
1. Taking into account my situation, would I be best installing Snow Leopard after clearing my HD since I have the DVD for it and then upgrading to either Mountain Lion and then Mavericks, or just straight to Mavericks, or would it be easier to get Mavericks onto a bootable USB and not bother with the Snow Leopard DVD? Keep in mind I'd like the least complicated option, as I haven't done it before. I'm curious because I've read that Mavericks was designed to be used as an upgrade and not so much for clean installs - not sure if that's true or not.
2. Obviously I've got Mountain Lion under "Purchases" in my App Store account and I don't want to have to pay again. If I clear my HD and end up installing Snow Leopard, will it be easy enough to just log in and redownload it without having to pay again? If I do this method and end up with Snow Leopard, will it be advisable to jump straight to Mavericks? The fact Mountain Lion cost around £20 or so (can't remember exactly) and Mavericks is free, I'm not sure I trust jumping...
3. I think I'm ok with actually clearing my HD, but wondering when to insert the disc or USB - will it prompt me or is it just before restarting... Or after restarting? It says on the disc, "To start up from Mac OS X, hold down the C key as the computer starts up'. Confused about the order in which I should do things!
4. In general, is a clean install advisable of just Mavericks? It seems like a huge hassle and I'd rather upgrade from what I bought the MacBook with in the first place. I've read that the recovery partition can go missing if you do a clean install? What is that and does it really happen?
If anyone could help/advise me, that'd be awesome! Thank you! PS I'm aware there are a number of different versions of Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion and so on, so any advice regarding that would also be useful.

I forgot to add that I'm not sure whether to clear the drive through Disk Utility through the Applications folder and then put the disk in before restarting or whether to simply restart my MacBook without doing that, then put the DVD in while pressing the C key.

How-To: Install Bundled Apps to another MacBook Pro using Target Disk Mode

Recently, I replaced the dead hard drive on my wife's computer. All the data was previously backed-up so all I needed to do was reinstall the original OS. Oops! Those disks disappeared over two years ago...perfect, right? No poblem, I already had the boxed install DVD for Snow Leopard and installed the core OS. But what about those bundled applications? Aha! That is the marketing coup Apple doesn't really talk much about. You see, you get the entire suite of Apple branded apps with the original install disks but not with a boxed OS install disk. It's just something that you have to find out for yourself...the hard way.
My requirement: restore all the iPhoto data to the reimaged machine running Snow Leopard. But that data has no application that can read it. Solution - Reinstall iPhoto from another source.
So I developed this workaround I hope the rest of you find amusingly simple, wildly helpful
Here's how I restored iPhoto on my wife's computer:
1) Get two Laptops side by side. In our case we both have macbook pro 2008 computers (Wife's and Mine)
2) Power both down and direct connect a firewire 400 cable (or 800 if you have it) between the two
3) Start the Wife's laptop in Target Disk Mode: Press "T" immediately after engagin the power button, hold it down until you see the "fanned" firewire symbol floating across a grey screen - it's quite large, about the size of your hand making a "stop" gesture
4) No start the Mine laptop by pressing the "option" key (two keys to the left of the space bar)
5) You will presented with a pair of hard disks to boot from, choose the Wife's laptop hard drive
5a) you'll notice now that the Mine laptop is booting the OS system files of the Wife's laptop (Her desktop, her preferences, etc...)
6) On the Mine laptop, insert the original Mac OS Install Disk (#1) that came with the Mine laptop (usually any OEM install disk will work, though)
7) Double-click on the DVD icon on the desktop when it mounts and look for a shortcut that reads, "Install Bundled Applications Only"...launch it
8) Now choose install bundled applications but make sure to press the "Customize" button in order to specifically choose which OEM software you want. In our case, just iPhoto
9) Follow the installer prompts all the through to completion and exit (you will be prompted to insert disk #2 along the way).
10) Remove the install disks, power down
11) Power down the Wife's laptop too
12) Disconnect the Firewire cables from both laptops
13) Power up the Wife's laptop normally
14) Launch the FInder and drill down to Applications. Look for iPhoto and launch it
15) iPhoto will either pickup the "iPhoto Library" that was previously restored after reimaging with Snow Leopard or you may be prompted to manually associate a library with iPhoto.
16) Once complete, you'll se all the restored pictures and data from when before the original hard drive crashed. Wife will be pleased and you'll look like a Genius
This is a really handy trick for troubleshooting a lot of install and restore related issues.
Hopefully you'll find other uses for it too.

I think the problem is that you can't install an older OS X version onto a system running a newer OS X version. So I would try the following:
     1. have an external disk or create another partition on an internal drive to use for the Mountain Lion install (you might have to shrink an existing partition to make room for another)
     2. Create an external bootable USB thumb drive with the Mountain Lion OS on it (do a search on the web for this - for example see http://www.macworld.com/article/1167857/how_to_make_a_bootable_mountain_lion_ins tall_drive.html
     3. Reboot Yosemite and then boot from the USB thumb drive by holding down the option key
     4. run the mountain lion installer and install on the new disk/partition you created in step 1 - it will also create another recovery partition from this same part of the disk
Now your Mac system will have both a Mountain Lion install as well as the Yosemite install. You won't be able to use Migration Assistant to move things from Yosemite to Mountain Lion because it will see that you're "going backwards" and won't allow you to.
Have a good backup of everything before starting in case there are problems.

How do I backup my MacBook Pro when the disk image is grayed out?

I have a MacBook Pro (15 inc. four years old) running OSX 10.6.8 and last night I got the color pinwheel of death. I could not force quit anything and had to manually power down.
When I powered back up I got the folder with the question mark. I ran Disk Utility and tried to Repair Disk, but I got:
Disk Utility stopped repairing "diskOs2"
...Back up as many of your files as possible
Details: Invalid B-tree node size
The volume could not be verified completely
Volume repair complete
Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk, Back up... at the disk, and restore your backed-up files
I hooked up an external hard drive and tried to make a copy of the disk image, but it is grayed out. I also tried to partition the main Hitachi drive and make a "New Image" but I got: "Unable to create backup (input/output error)
So I now have a Genius Bar appointment for tomorrow, but I can't even back up my computer before going. I can have them tell me what to do, but then I'll have to go home and do it, and then make a second appointment.
Any suggestions? Oh, and I backed up this computer about six weeks ago on Time Machine, but I'd love to make a copy of all new files I've created since then.

You have two options. Purchase Disk Warrior or erase the drive. The former would require your ability to install a download of DW on a bootable disk so you could repair your hard drive. And, DW costs $99.00. The latter requires a Snow Leopard installer DVD from which you can boot, erase the hard drive, then reinstall Snow Leopard. Then download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. You can then restore from your Time Machine backup. There is no way now for you to backup files unless you can access the drive. Open Disk Utility, select the entry for your disk volume then click on the Mount icon in the toolbar. If your volume mounts on the Desktop then you may be able to copy files to an external drive or even run a Time Machine backup.

How do I recover data from my macbook pro with a disk that can't be repaired?

I'm in need of a data recovery solution. My Macbook pro (17") running OS X Mountain Lion won't boot and is stuck on the gray startup screen with the apple icon and spinning gear and disk utility states "Error: Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files." Unfortunately, I don't have a back up and don't know how to access or back up the data on my drive. Mounting it to another computer as an external drive via firewire did not work. Does anyone know of any solutions to extract the data from my macbook pro hard drive before I reformat it? I really am sorry about your problem. I have opened up my help centre and it too states '[...]back up as much of your data as possible, reformat the disk, reinstall OS X, and then restore your backed-up data'. It then says: If you continue to have problems with your disk, it may be physically damaged and need to be replaced.
I just noticed it says reinstall OS X. If it says this then this indicates a rather serious computing problem.
Help centre also states: If Disk Utility reports “overlapped extent allocation” errors, two or more files occupy the same space on your disk, and at least one of them is likely to be corrupted. [The next step is the following] Check each file in the list of affected files. [added by me]
A damage disk causes files to be corrupted. Also you can repair a disk by deleting corrupt files (i.e. one can still use a damaged disk providing it has been repaired). Disk Utility is able to help to repair corruption problems but not if your program files have become corrupted due to large-scale damaged disk.
I understand why you want to connect to another hard disk because you want to extract your files and I would probably do the same. I am on a 13-inch Macbook Pro trying to solve your problem.

Can a Mac Pro boot off a MacBook Pro in Target Disk Mode?

Details:
I'm finishing a music project that was created on a PPC G5 Quad computer and going to a studio in Santa Monica to complete the final mixdown. My 3rd party software plug-in configuration is unique, and the studio doesn't have all of the software instruments that I do on their 8 core mac pro. My G5 software installation is mirrored to my MacBook Pro, but the MBP doesn't have enough CPU power to play the project back.
Is it feasible to have the studio's 8 core Mac Pro boot from my MacBook Pros hard drive? Essentially, we'd be using my OS and software on their powerful CPU / hardware. I figure, since they are both Intel builds of OSX, this should be do-able.
I don't have access to the Mac Pro until I show up to start working.

The MacBook Pro boots fine in 10.5.8, and loads the Logic project without any faults. The only issue is that a CPU shortage occurs when you attempt to play the sequence.
Like you suggested, I performed separate UB installations of all the needed software on the MBP solely so I could move Logic projects from one computer to the next without a hitch. (Actually, DropBox does this for me). Migration assistant was not employed in this process due to the PPC / Intel issues you noted.
I didn't need to mention the G5 as it appears to have caused some confusion based on Kappy's reply, but I did want to explain my work flow thoroughly.
It sounds like booting the MacPro from my MBP is feasible. I'll mark this topic 'solved' and head over to the studio tonight. I'll post here any anomalies from the session (if any).

So, does formatting the hard disk many time reduce the performance of the hard disk? and makes it less doing its jobs than before?
or it is fine to do format as many times as i want? Because i want to install the system again

You shouldn't have a problem. If you do it a lot (but a lot) of times maybe your hard drive could have some problems. But when you format the disk the only thing you do is restarting the partitioning table. If you securely erase your content all disk will be set to 0 values and maybe will have better performance.
You shouldn't worry about it. If you use a SSD you shoud consider a little more than with a HDD. SSD's havve a number writting cicles. But with a really intensive use for a normal-advanced user a good SSD can last more than 5 years without a problem.
My experience with a Windows computer tells me that after reinstalling Windows more than 30 times, in all benchmarks HDD scores the same.
With mac I've been more lucky and I only had to reinstall once!

Winmagic Securedoc and New Macbook Pro for Full Disk Encryption (FDE)

Hi, I wonder if anyone had any experience with this. I've installed a seagate Momentus FDE drive (...421 series) on my new macbook pro and tried installing Winmagic securedoc to manage full disk encryption. It seems that despite all their recommendations re: hibernatemode and lidwake and sleep vs hibernation, the MBP crashes when I close the lid and then awaken it (by opening and pressing the power button). It cannot be awakened via an external keyboard either. Note that both hibernate and sleep work fine without securedoc. As securedoc appears to be the only viable FDE solution, I'd really like to get it working. Has anyone had any luck getting it to work with the new MBPs?

PGP is another alternative as I have used it for the past few years on all of my Macbook Pros. I also own SecureDoc but have not installed it on the new Macbook yet.
I do know that PGP disables hibernate during the install as it can cause problems.

I have the disk, but I was wondering if I did follow through with it, will it erase all the applications I have installed like Microsoft Word, PPT, and Excel?

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

Trying to install CS5 Master Collection onto a macbook pro with no disk drive.

I would like to install my cs5 master collection onto my macbook pro, however it does not have a disk drive...instead, it's an air drive. Does anyone know if there is any way to download these applications without the disks? I attempted to contact customer service, but apparently adobe does not offer customer support for versions below CS6 (which is unbelievable to me). Thanks.
