Macbook pro ret turns on but then turns itself off

Hi all
I am new to apple computers, I got a nice new Macbook Pro 15" retina in December 2012.
I have noticed, when I turn it on and I have left the room and come back in a few minutes later, it is off.
It runs off the mains, not on sleep mode as I always shut-down.
I am not sure what to do ?

First, try to reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If it doesn't work, I recommend you to take the computer to an Apple Store to get the computer repaired or replaced for free as your computer is in warranty

  • My MacBook Pro just turned itself off while installing Windows 7. It has now got a black screen with a white flashing bar in the top left corner...what can I do?

I was just installing windows 7 onto my MacBook Pro. I selected to have 200GB for Windows and the rest leave for Mac.
I clicked install and the bar filled up as it should do. However, once the install had completed, my MacBook turned itself off. I assumed this was normal. Now, my MacBook has a black screen with a white flashing underscore in the top left corner.
What is wrong and what should I do?

Hold down the Option key when starting up then on the sceen that comes up select Mac OS X to boot from.
The Win 7 install didn't go well and is hung in some way. You should use boot camp assistant to remove the win partition and start over.
Make sure you are using a Retail version of Win 7. A Branded OEM version, like ones from Dell and HP, will NOT work to install Windows 7 on your Mac.

    Hello untech,
I see that it has been awhile since you have posted with us on the HP Forums.  Please let me take a moment to say "Welcome Back".
I see that you are having an issue with the printer shutting it self off and not powering back on.
By chance do you have the printer power cable connected to a power bar/strip?  If so, please try connecting the printers power cable directly to a wall outlet.  Here is a document that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
The printer in the document is a LaserJet printer but this document is meant for HP products in general and only uses the LaserJet as an example.
I am also going to include a document for when The HP Printer Won't Turn On or Respond When the Power Button is Pressed.
If by chance the issue is not resolved after doing the steps outlined,  I would then suggest calling HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you. If you are calling within North America, the number is 1-800-474-6836 and for all other regions, click here: click here.
Please feel free to write me back if you have any other questions.
I hope you have a great Monday.
    Cheers,

  • I tried to download video from RCA Small Wonder EZ201 to my new macbook pro.  Macbook pro recognizes the device but then message appears that device was improperly ejected when it is still connected. How can I download these videos?

When I connect the RCA Small Wonder to my MacBook Pro, the device is recognized in finder as EZ201.  I tried to copy the video files in the folder but within a minute or two, I receive a message that the disk was ejected improperly, even though the device is still connected.  I was able to download the first few videos before it stopped working and was able to play them using Perian.  However, when I tried to connect the device again, it froze my system and I had to force a shut down by turning the computer off. Why is the device initially recongized but then shows as improperly ejected when it is still connected? How can I download the videos if the MacBook Pro won't allow the device to stay connected?

A picture of a screen that suggests my new MBP Retina never connects to the "Macbook Pro backup ("StefanTimeCapsule")
This is the one that has the files for the backups procured by the Time Machine program. But it can't "connect"-- You 'll see int he sideways pic (sorry!) that the options STILL says "connecting"
Do i have to make these Time Machines more open to connection?

  • Damage Macbook pro by turning it off?

    Hi
I just recently went over to mac, and i am pretty exited about it, beats the **** our of the crap i used before..
i got a question though, people seem to be all hypen about the sleep function on the mac, i am personally used to always turning it off because i am very and i mean very paranoid.
But does the Macbook damage in any way at all by turning it off every time i am finished using it? Compared to just letting it sleep?
And how many hours should pass before i should turn it off instead of just letting it sleep (incase it hurts the mac)
sorry if its a dumb question.
    Cheers

The turning off vs. sleep religious war has been raging for ages and shows no signs of abating.
Personally, I hate having to wait on a $@!&^%!! machine, so I have slept mine since that became a possibility. In 12+ years of hauling Apple portables around, I have not lost a single byte nor has any woken up by itself.
As for longevity, think of this: when does a light bulb fail most of the time? When it has been on for awhile or when you turn it on? Most electrical failures occur on the power-on cycle. Another thing that really kills electronic components is the thermal cycle, which is why servers and mainframes are best kept on all the time. In the case of portables, whose internal temperature can vary wildly depending on usage, the issue is less clear cut.
I've always felt that the "turn the computer off when finished" mantra is something promoted by Microsoft since their O.S.s really can't take an always-on mode of operation. Those of us that come from the server/mainframe world are used to having Unix/VM/MVS/NetWare kept running without reboot or shutdown for months or years at a time without a hitch.
OTOH, the greenies are really going to take an issue to this irresponsible and unecological stance...

  • Spilt Water on Macbook Pro - I turned it off - What do I do next?

using a blowdryer was a very bad idea.

  • Macbook Pro Lion won't but then suddenly boots

I have a Macbook Pro that I recently put a new larger hard drive in as well as extra memory.  I put a 1 TB hard drive 7200 RPM (it haD A 500 GB 7200 RPM previously)  in it and upgraded to 8 gb of memory.  This is a Macbook Pro 8,2.  I am running Lion and reinstalled it completely on the new hard drive.  All was well for a while.  But now all of a sudden I am having intermitent problems.  It crashes, then I get the wavy looking lines on the startup screen …then it goes to a gray screen with no mouse pointer and never boots.  I have tried all the solutions I could find here ….Internet Recovery, Hardware diagnosis, Safe mode and then tried to use the HD Recovery partition option.  Nothing worked.  I then put in the old RAM in.  Still nothing.  I tried all the different fix options again and did not get any results. I then tried rebooting it several times the regular way and nothing.  I tried swapping out the old hard drive and got nothing.  Hardware tests indicate nothing is wrong.  I tried those again.  Again they indicated nothing wrong.  I was about to just give up and tried rebooting again and all of a sudden, no squiggly lines and it booted.  But I don't feel secure here.  Any suggestions would be welcome.  I do have a backup with Time machine.  But if I have a dead machine that does me no good except for the purchase of a new computer.

  • HT1338 my macbook air continuously turns itself off and on again for no apparent reason- despite having full battery... What is wrong with it?

As of recently my macbook air continuously turns on and off.
Sometimes it does not turn on at all.  When it does turn on, after a few minutes it comes up with the shut down options and unless I press cancel it turns off.  Occasionally when turning on it only gets as far as the startup sound then turns off again- occasionally in a continuous loop.
    Any ideas?

I think you might get a new phone instead of repairing it as it takes time and you said the repairing center is far from your living place

  • Turning itself off, resetting time to 2008 and won't charge...only in the last 2 days -what's happened????

In the last 2 days my Macbook has twice turned itself off just out of nowhere - not even any noise, then when i get it back on it's reset to midnight Jan 2008? It also stops charging as well, the plug in just turns dead, no lights, no charge. Even if i unplug it, plug it back in etc.  The time eventually resets itself but that's not the point - is anyone else having these problems?? Dodgy update somewhere maybe? help!!!!

P.S. when it plugs into the computer, it doesn't always Sync- it thinks it's unplugged too fast for itunes to recognize it.
The phone also crashes ALL the time (even with the application for the phone settings- I have only basic apps). My itunes crashes a lot too, but I've re-installed and all that- I think the phone is crashing it.

  • My macbook pro will turn on but screen stays black.

My macbook pro will turn on but screen stays black. There is no sound on start up and keys dont light up. I have done all the resets:
I disconnected the computer from the power cord, and from all other cables.
I held down the power button for several seconds to turn off the computer.
I let it sit 5 minutes.
I restarted the laptop while holding down the Shift key and nothing happened.
Holding down Command, Option, P, and R to reset your PRAM and NVRAM
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379The only thing I haven’t tried is “floating” the computer. I’m not ready to heat it up to the melting point.
I need lots of help!!! any ideas? Its a MacBook Pro 15” or 17.5” about 5 years old. Its about 2 updates behind (OS: Snow Leopard)

Zane W is giving you good advice.  Take it to an Apple store genius bar and have them examine it for free.  You then will know what the issues are and then can make informed decisions.
    Ciao.
