Macbook Pro Retina 13" Battery Life - Need Advice

Hi. I bought my first ever Macbook Pro Retina 13" a few days ago. I am mainly going to be using it for college work, listening to music and watching youtube videos in my spare time. And browsing the net of course.
I was wondering what is the BEST way to charge my laptop in order for me being able to use it for a long time when its not plugged in? Do I let the battery go all the way to 1%? I did that the first two times and I am worried because I've heard its bad. Or do I let the battery drop to about 20% EVERY TIME and then charge it? Or do I charge it whenever I need to and only let the battery drop to about 20% a few times a month? I am really confused. Ive been on many different forums etc and everyone is saying something different. As I said, this is my first macbook and I don't want to ruin the battery life.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Using magic trackpad affect macbook pro retina's battery life?

Hi, I just got new macbook pro 15 with retina. I was not sure how much it affects on macbook's battery while using the Magic Trackpad or Magic mouse. If it affects indeed then how much...thanks...

You are using Bluetooth if you have got a Magic Trackpad, so it affects the battery. However, it's not a big difference respecting to using the built-in trackpad or a USB mouse, so I wouldn't worry

  • I just bought a 13" macbook pro retina display. I need to run films and presentations remotely. Does RemoteHD work on a machine without an IR sensor, or does anybody know what would work?

I have a mid 2009 Macbook Pro and I have just bought a 13" macbook pro retina display. I need to run films and presentations remotely., i.e not sitting at the computer.
Does RemoteHD work on a machine without a built in IR sensor, or does anybody know what would work?

I can't vouch for this as I've never tried one, but I think this does what you're after.

  • Why does my Macbook Pro Retina's battery drain so quickly?

Okay so I have Mavericks for my Macbook Pro retina ( I have been hesitant to update to Yosemite because I heard connecting to wifi takes longer and it slows down the laptop but at this point if it improves my laptop's battery life I might update anyway..). It is only about a year old I got it December of  2013. Lately I have been noticing that my laptop's battery has been draining so easily. It usually lasts about 4-5 hours (even thought ideally it would last about 7) but these days it has been lasting me barely 2 hours. How can I fix this? Will quitting applications like Google Chrome make it any better? Are there any apps or anything I can install that can help in extending my Mac's current battery life? Please, help. I really need my battery life to be way better than this :/
    Thank you.

There are a variety of reasons that will affect battery run time.  Activity monitor may identify some culprits:
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203184
Google Chrome and its various parts have had a history of compatibility issues with OSX and has often been a resource hog.  I suggets deleting it.  I use Firefox.
Here are a few Apple support articles, that may assist you:
    https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro/batteries_power/
Should you have any AV software or so called 'cleaning' or 'performance' applications, they are also detrimental to MBP operation and that may be relected in battery run time.
    Ciao.

  • Is it possible to replace Macbook Pro Retina's battery?

I have a Late 2012 macbook pro retina and after 2 years of working with it, it has a problem with battery. Yesterday it gave me a notification that the battery is in  "replace soon" condition. I would like to know if the battery replacement is possible on this model? Also i don't think we have a apple store in my country and I would like to know where can I take it, to solve this problem?

The battery in the 2012 retina MBP is difficult to replace due to it being glued in place. See the iFixit teardown here: https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/MacBook+Pro+15-Inch+Retina+Display+Mid+2012+Tear down/9462
To have the battery replaced it really needs to be done by Apple either at a store or shipped back to them. Go here to see what your options are by country:
    https://www.apple.com/support/country/
There may be local non-Apple repair shops that will do this work, but you are taking your chances with them. Good luck!

  • MacBook Pro Retina 13" - Battery Issues after one week!

    Specs of Unit
MacBook Pro retina 13" - bought literally one week ago
Processor  2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Graphics  Intel Iris 1024 MB
    OS X Version 10.9.2
Problem - Okay so the estimated battery life of these babies are 9 hours approx.
After a full charge I am getting an EST. time of about 4.30-5 hours battery life, bare in mind this is with NO programs running and NO background tasks sneakily rinsing the battery.
Yes, I have tried reseting the system management.
Yes, I have tried safe mode.
Please help me, is the battery faulty and should I really go to mac store??
Or is this  a software issue?
    Thanks

Does switching off Wifi make a difference?
In UK and USA (and quite a few other places) you have 14 days from purchase to get a refund or replacement - no questions asked.  If there is nothing running then this does sound to be depleting rather fast.  My late 2013 13" MBP retina gives me about 10 hours using Pages (several documents open) and e-mail only.
Get a replacement and see if you get the same problem.

  • First cycle of MacBook pro retina of battery

During the first charge of he MacBook pro retina, is it best to fully charge it and leave it on the plug?

you can leave your Retina plugged in since once it's fully charged, it will stop charging......
as with any macbook battery, it's best to use it plugged in when you're close to a power outlet and use it once in a while under it's own power and charge it back up once it's down to 75% to keep the battery in optimal condition...
do not use your macbook under it's own power to 0%....it will do more harm than good to your battery...
good luck and have fun with your new Retina..

  • HT201380 I AM USING MACBOOK PRO RETINA. DO I NEED TO INSTALL REMOTE DESKTOP 3.7.1 ?

    Hi,
i am using MacBook Pro Retina 15 , 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7.
Can anyone tell me about Remote Desktop Client Update 3.7.1 neccessary to install in my MacBook pro Please

    Hi
Apple Remote Desktop is part of your OS and just as other system updates you should install it as it fixes some issues as listed here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1710
Apple Remote Desktop is not a virus, malware or anything else that might be seen as 'nastyware'. As with any update you should follow Apple's advice prior to running the update and make sure you have a full and complete backup of any data you can't do without.

  • Macbook pro retina 15 battery issues.

I am using macbook pro retina 15" 2013 late. I just bought it 2weeks ago and battery age is 1.6months. The battery max at the first time was around 8900 but now it is around 8300 with just 23cycles. I am wondering my battery has problems or not.

Before trying to go back to Mavericks, try performing an SMC and NVRAM/PRAM reset. These two components control several functions of your MacBook Pro and by resetting them to their default values it may clear up the issue that you're seeing.
    To reset the SMC:
Turn off your computer and ensure the MagSafe adapter is plugged in.
Hold down Shift-Control-Option on the left side of your keyboard, and then hold down the Power button at the same time.
Wait about 5 seconds, and then release the keys. You may see the light on the power adapter change colour momentarily.
Don't turn the computer on just yet, we'll do that in the next step.
    To reset the NVRAM/PRAM:
Press the Power button and then immediately hold down Command-Option-P-R on your keyboard at the same time.
Continue holding these keys until your MacBook Pro restarts and you hear the start up chime a second time.
Release the keys and continue booting into OS X.
If this doesn't work, try booting into Safe Mode. This will help you determine whether a software issue is causing your problem. To boot your Mac into Safe Mode, restart the computer and hold down the Shift key until you see the Apple logo appear on the screen. It may take a little while longer to boot up as OS X will verify the state of your disk and clear out certain caches and temporary files. Once booted into Safe Mode, try restarting and see if the issue persists.

  • MacBook Pro Retina 15 battery issue

    Hello,
I'm having issue with my battery on MacBook Pro Retina 15 Mid 2012. System says Replace now but I have only 753 Cycle Counts.
Run Hardware test and got the following error code: 4bat/1/40000000: 0x80c53f90
Tried PRAM and SMC reset but nothing helps.
It there any chance to fix this without replacing the battery?
    Regards.

Not a chance: this is a goner. And don't take that "Replace now" message too lightly: a failing (swelling) battery can cause serious damage to your MBP.

  • MacBook Pro - late 2013 Battery Life declining

I have noticed in the last couple of weeks that my Battery life is not what it used to be. Until recently, I would be able to charge overnight, and then take to work with me and have on most of the day without being plugged into the mains and still have 30 or 40% battery left when I get home. Now it seems to decrease quite rapidly and even more so once it gets past having 40% left.
I also noticed last night that when using Chromecast to stream to my TV, it really eats up the battery.
I have a 15" MacBook Pro, SSd pro-retina - I have not yet upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite as I read so many people having issues with Yosemite.

    1. Check the cycle count of the battery against the rated life for your model. The battery may be due for replacement. If the power adapter is connected almost all the time, the battery may need replacing even though the cycle count is not too high.
    2. Follow these instructions, or these for OS X 10.8 or earlier.
    3. In the Energy Saver preference pane, uncheck the box marked
Enable Power Nap while on battery power
if it's shown (it may not be.)
    4. You can also try resetting the SMC.
    5. Make sure your system is up to date in Software Update.
    6. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

  • What is the best way to look after Macbook Pro Retina Display battery?

    Hello,
I am a little confused on how to look after the battery in my new Macbook Pro with Retina Display. I have read lots of different things and I do not seem to get a clear answer.
I feel by charging my laptop all the way, then using till 0% and doing it all over again uses the cycles faster and therefore meaning it will not last as long. I also read that having that laptop plugged in a lot of the time will also damage the battery. I have read the document Apple have posted online but it doesn't give me a time frame of what is or is not a good length of time for it to be fully charged and plugged in for. Should I charge then unplug or is it safe to have it plugged in for a few days when being used? I always unplug regardless when I am not in the room with the laptop.
Could someone please advice me on what they feel is the best way to keep the battery healthy. Thanks Benjamin

I think this is a great topic to get advice from the community, I have often wondered about this topic too.
    My thoughts/experience are:
Cycle count seems to be the factor that ages the battery - although it is not exactly clear when your cycle count will click up by 1. I suspect it must be significant use or period off charge - but no idea how to quantify that.
I mostly have my unibody 15" MBP (early 2011) plugged, so after 14 months my cycle count is 28 and the battery charges to around 93-96% of initial capacity.
I use Watts and coconutbattery to keep an eye on battery condition and Watts is set to remind me to do a complete discharge/recharge (calibration) every month or so.
However I was away for 10 days recently and left MBP plugged in but shutdown. Before going I'd been keeping MBP extra busy and had skipped a calibration. On return I was using normally and then got a clue that all was not well with my battery although it said fully charged in menu bar.
I pulled the magsafe, instant off just like pulling lead on a desktop. No charge.
Magsafe LED showing green but no charge and not charging. Battery status said to replace battery.
Feeling upset at the suddendeath of a good friend I tried to reset SMC but the instructions seemed not to help.
Finally LUCK with an idea: I shutdown, unplugged, waited a bit, plugged while holding power button down and LED went orange, my battery started charging and went up to 96%.
I had been about to go pay for a new battery!
So good usage is important and we/I are not that well informed about best usage - I had been looking.
    Maybe not everywhere but....

  • Macbook pro (13-inch) battery life?

    Hello,
I've bought a Macbook Pro (13-inch, mid 2012, non-retina, OSX Yosemite 10.10, i7 processor) 3 weeks ago and I was wondering how long the battery usually lasts and what I can do to increase battery life.
Currently it only lasts up to 5 hours, despite it promising 9 hours of battery life. This is mostly while using Google Chrome and iTunes. It feels like I'm recharging it constantly and it already has been through 23 battery cycles - at this rate my battery would only last 3 years which would be shorter than my previous laptop did and I expect more from something that cost twice as much as my previous one.
So am I doing something wrong? Is there something broken or is max 5 hours of battery life normal?
With my previous laptop I also used to take out the battery and use only the adaptor to save my battery, but as I can't remove the battery of this laptop I was wondering if leaving the adaptor in while working at home so it remains at 100% would be a good idea or would that actually be worse?
    Many thanks in advance!
    Shari D
MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

The battery life is stated as "up to" 9 hours, not promising 9 hours. Having said that, I would suggest using a browser other than Chrome, as it is often considered a battery hog. Also note, it is perfectly fine to use the computer with the AC power connected. As a rule of thumb, use it AC power when available, and on battery power when portability is required.
