Macbook Pro Retina 13" fan hiss on start up?
Hi there community. My 13" Retina MBP makes a slight "hiss" noise whenever I turn the machine on or I resume it from sleep. In a quiet environment it is noticable, and I know it comes from the fan starting up. When the machine is up and running though, the only noise I hear from the fan is a regular low-profile noise (about 1000rpm), which is completly normal. Any answers?
I hear a very FAINT noise in my 15" rMBP, when I first got mine thet other day the FAN came on really loud and that's the last time i ever heard the FAN. But this new 2013 rMBP is a 1000 times more quiet than my 2008 MBP. Sometimes I wonder if it's even RUNNING it's so quiet. Apple really did a nice job putting the SSD drive in and although I hate to admit it leaving out the Optical drive made this machine lighter and the quietest machine ever built.

MacBook Pro Retina 13" fan very loud/overheats when playing full screen video/games
Hi,
Just purchased a MacBook Pro Retina, refurbished (because why not - the same product for a cheaper price) around a month ago. It's the 13 inch and is the model before the most recent one came out (4GB of RAM instead of 8GB - late 2013). From the very first day, playing a full-screen video on any site (be it YouTube, Facebook, etc) just makes the fan much louder than usual (so loud that you can almost hear it more over the video itself). Thought it may have been just a thing with Flash Player being buggy, but the problem has persisted for a while now. I'm not even pushing the CPU to any limits - literally playing a full-screen video on Facebook (not even in HD) makes the fan go crazy.
Just last night I tried installing Borderlands 2 and it was the same thing - FPS rate was fine, no lag, just the fan was so loud that I actually got scared for my computer and turned it off. After closing the app and checking out the fan temperature, it was at 91c.
Never happens when browsing/surfing or doing my usual work.
Should I go give it back to Apple? The thing is I start university in less than a week (and hence will be traveling), so not sure if I can afford to give my laptop in to them for a long period of time (I know it should be free though since mine is a refurb item). May it just be an issue that is quickly repairable or is this worse?During processor intensive activities—such as processing HD video or playing a game that makes extensive use of the graphics processor—the fans speed up to provide additional airflow.

Macbook Pro retina 13" fan not spinning
Hi, I have had my macbook pro retina 13" (late 2013 model) since november, it had a fan problem after a month, where it made a horrible whirring noise and according to istat just wasnt spinning. This was independent of tempeartures for example 0rpm at 25 degrees and still 0rpm at 55 degrees, obviously it began to heat up rapidly after even just mld usage.
Took it back to apple and they cleaned the fan and the problem cleared up, however a few months later it has started again, surely this can't just be dirt build up seeing as the fan has been cleaned already and the computer is only 4/5 months old.
I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else, if they solved it, or just whether I should take it back to apple.
Many ThanksThere are no bits you can flip to straighten this out.
Take it back to Apple, remind them they already cleaned it and suggest maybe they should replace it this time.
Apple is unique in the way they run their repairs. They are not trying to squeeze every penny out of you the way the car dealers are. They mostly want you to be a happy customer. -
Macbook Pro Retina 15 Fan Full Constant?
Hello all,
I have a Macbook Pro Retina which is just over 1 year old. I dont have apple care so its just out of warrently.
Its the Mid-2012 version.
Last week, i was editing video in Premier CC, and the fan never came on. I edited for about 2 hours and the Macbook became very hot, but the fan was never audiable..
The next day (and ever since), when i boot the macbook up from cold, the instant the OS loads and the login window appears, the fans are audiable and running fastly.
I have tried doing SMC reset aswell as pram resets, but these have had no effect.
The macbook is fully functional, tho its really anoying when i take the macbook into a studio and the fans are realy loud...
I have tried to book a genious bar appointment, but straight out, the site says 'no available appointments'. If you turn up at store, you get turned away.
I installed iStat to find out the fan speeds and they are stuck at around 2k rpm.
Is their anything i can do to try resolve this issue? Thanks for the reply Kappy, as you can see on the screen shot, theirs no runaway precesses going on. I think its definatley a firmware/software issue. Are their an other resets i can do? Also, is it normal to have soo many processes/threads? - Im coming from a more 'windows' background where 63 process happen with nothing running...
I would take it to the Mac store to have it looked at but aparently the UK macstores arnt offering bookings anymore OR they are not notifying the public of a time to go online to book appointments... -
Macbook pro retina 15" fan gaming question
Hi everybody,
I plain to buy a macbook pro retina 15" but i would like to get feedbacks from users who also plays with it.
Anyone here got this laptop and world of warcraft, diablo 3 or starcraft 2 under osx ?
Is the fan or the heat going crazy after some minutes of gaming like other pc gaming laptop ?
And under bootcamp with windows 7 or windows 8, is it noisy when playing ?
Thanks in advance for your feedbacks, i'm ready to buy it this week, but i would like to get those answers before buying.Hi ds store,
I don't think the MacBook Pro I'm talking about has mountain lion, because they were released only a few days ago and come with mavericks installed from the factory -
Macbook Pro Retina Noisy Fans When using adobe premere cs6
i bought new macbook pro retina 15'' 2013 newest one , but i heard a fan noise for few minute when adobe premere cs6 run . Is that normal ?
how can i solve this problem...It probably is. CPU/GPU intensive applications will place stress on same and cause heat. You MBP fans are dissipating that heat.
You might install iStat pro (download from the Internet) and compare that with the Activity Monitor display to the the correlation of application usage and temperatures/fan speeds.

2012 Macbook Pro Retina Cooling Fan Question?
Ok I was running Skype, Traktor Scratch Pro, Chrome, iTunes, and Photoshop and I opened Garageband and my Macbook Pro's fan started running really loud, to the point where I could hear it over the speakers. I have nothing to complain about because this Mac does these thing 24/7 very, very well. If I tried to do all that on my former Microsoft PC, it would've bluescreened. I was just wondering why it did that because it only does it very rarely and I was wondering if it is normal.
Were you monitoring the temperatures? If you closed out programs and the fans slowed back down, then that sounds like normal operation. The fans run faster to prevent the processors from overheating.
Alternatively, it's possible that one of the programs you had running is malfunctioning and causing excessive processor usage. -
Hey guys,
So after a few months of using the MBP 15' Retina, I've discovered that the fans are incredibly loud even when playing flash games like candy crush or tetris.. are any of you guys having the same problem? Like all of a sudden from be quiet to unbelievably loud just as the games load. So yeah, hopefully someone has the same problem as I am having.
What I was thinking was that the MBP Retina 15' is such a beefed up laptop, it shouldn't require that much CPU to run flash games that are not even THAT graphically intensive to which making the fans that loud..
Thanks!Believe it or not, Flash REALLY isn't the issue.
It's hardware makers making devices with less processor performance and requiring software makers to fit into a certain requirements of such. Namely iPhone, iPods and iPads.
Flash is designed to give a lot of features and work across many operating systems, browsers and platforms as a write once solution.
Flash has a certain level of processor performance requirement, which hardware makers like Apple want to build less powerful machines using less expensive processors.
Apple has removed Coverflow 3D effects from iTunes and discontinued the 17" MacBook Pro, leaving only the 15" as having a more powerful 3D capable graphics capability.
So Apple is obviously on a anti-heat/performance quest as they further thin up their hardware, trying to kill Flash by punishing Mac users who want to run it.
Flash runs without a fan sound on my older Mac with dedicated GPU and older OS X verison, no sweat.
Head to your System Preferences > Energy Saver and if you have it, uncheck Automatic Graphics switching, this will use the dedicated GPU and shorted battery life, but if your on power should reduce the heat and fan noise.
Another option is to use SMC fan control and set the fan default speed slightly faster, this will keep the machine slightly cooler and not trigger the higher fan speed as often.
If your running 10.8, you will need to System Preferences > Security > downloads to "Anywhere"
SMC FanControl is over at MacUpdate.com. -
Macbook Pro retina display gray screen on start up
New Macbook pro 1 week old gets a grey screen on startup
Tried to do a safeboot but it stops after 5 lines.
any ideas???You have a Retina model MBP. It did not come with installer discs. You would use Internet Recovery:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer. -
MacBook Pro Retina 15" FAN not stopping !!!
I have an MBP Retina 15" which was bought as soon as it came out (it came pre-installed with Lion, then was upgraded to Mountain Lion as soon as it was released, and now again is upgraded to Mavericks).
Occasionally (once or twice a week) fan just starts up for no apparent reason and won't stop.
In Activity Monitor, with pretty much every program shut down, the only things eating up energy/CPU, etc., are "kernel task" and Activity Monitor itself.
Fan just goes on and on and on, loudly and on overdrive, even though nothing is running. Doesn't seem to affect computer's performance. Only way fan stops is by re-booting.
Any comments or suggestions? Tks!Hey there Tobi1234,
It sounds like you upgraded to Mavericks and you are hearing your fan come on occassionally for a couple of minutes. This sounds like it is expected as the fan will come on when the computer needs to regulate its temperature:
The sensors are very responsive when they detect temperature changes. During processor intensive activities—such as processing HD video or playing a game that makes extensive use of the graphics processor—the fans speed up to provide additional airflow.
Ambient temperature plays a role in the responsiveness of the fans. The fans will turn on sooner and the fans will run faster if the ambient temperature outside the computer is high.
Where you use the system may affect fan behavior and heat as well. Using the computer on a soft surface like a couch, pillow, bed, or your lap can trap heat requiring higher fan activity. Using the computer on a hard flat surface like a table or desk allows for optimal radiation of heat.

You can reset your SMC to help troubleshoot issues with your fan:
Fans
The computer's fans run at high speed although the computer is not experiencing heavy usage and is properly ventilated.
Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

New Macbook Pro Retina continually re-starting when lid is closed - Kernal Panic included
Hello,
I called 800-MYAPPLE for tech support but they were not able to help me at all, hoping someone here can help. My new MacBook Pro Retina has been continually re-starting when the lid is closed. It does not happen every time, may 20% of the time. I am running Windows 8 on Boot Camp if that piece of information is important. Here is the latest kernal panic from the log:

Macbook pro retina start to make loud fan noise and work slow
I bought macbook pro retina display less than one years ago. For some reason my macbook pro has been making loud fan noise for about five mounth. Whenever macbook pro makes the noise, all the programs start to run slow. Typing, opening safari, and etc takes forever. It takes 20min to 40min for the noise to stop. At first, the macbook pro made noise once or twice in a day, but now it's making the noise frequently; It happens every 2-3 hours. It got to the point where it start to annoying me. Is there a way for me to fix this issue? If not, can I use one year warrenty to fix this problem? Thank you.
If your Mac works slowly when fans turn on, it's quite possible that there's a process which is eating the CPU and/or RAM.
Open Activity Monitor (in /Applications/Utilities), select "All Processes" above "Show" (in the toolbar) and then, order the processes by CPU usage. Do you see any process which is consuming more CPU or RAM? If so, tell us the name.
Additionally, you can reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 -
Any problems with heat and fan noise on Guild Wars 2 Macbook Pro retina?
I am thinking to start Guild Wars 2 Mac beta on my Macbook pro retina, but i have been reading in different forums that it heats up the system and that the fan kicks off really loud when playing the game. Anyone has any experience on this? Any guild wars 2 gamers please give me some feedback.
I have been playing GW2 for a while now on Beta. The game runs choppier than windows but I think that's because it's a Beta version. I bet after they finish optimizing it things should change, even heat.
As for the heat, it gets super hot. So hot the keyboard gets hot, and when I push in the keys, I feel heat. It's warm enough to cause concern. I don't know if it's bad or not, but the dude at the Apple Genius/Store said, the MBPR knows when it gets too hot and it'll let you know. He said if it plays and nothing is warning me then it's fine. The MBPR won't allow itself to go to catastrophic failure due to heat.
So I took his advice and have played. Just Monday (October 1st 2012) I played for a good 5 hours non-stop and nothing came up so if the Apple Genius guy is correct then I wouldn't worry about it. I do have AppleCare so if something does fail then I will blame the apple genius guy.
It's a fun game, my first MMO, but it's too hard for me sometimes. I don't like that -
MacBook Pro Retina - Fan/Heat During File Transfer
Hey guys,
I just had my MacBook Pro Retina in for repair because of an 4HDD/11/400000000: Sata (0,0) error and they replaced the SSD. I have a 2.7/16/768 configuration. One of the main issues I noticed was periodically slow file transfers, load times and boots hanging etc. and a secondary reason was a high-pitched buzzing with heavy disk usage.
My question now is... when I'm doing something as simple as a large file transfer, or installing some apps etc. the MacBook really heats up and the fans really start spinning sometimes. I've never known SSD access to heat up a computer so much. Is this normal behaviour that everyone else is experiencing with their systems? To clarify: this happens when not doing anything else with the machine other than copying files around, also when copying files to/from my external drive which is connected through FireWire on the back of my 27" Thunderbolt display which is then of course connected to the MacBook via the Thunderbolt port.
Expected behaviour? Seems odd to me, but this is my first MacBook so don't know if that's the 'norm' or not.I've managed to get the fan speed down to a reasonable, less audible level by using that old VRAM terminal command to enable me to keep the internal display disabled whilst the lid is open. I've had to shift quite a lot round on my desk to make this happen, but I guess it was the only way. It now runs 3 screens under similar loads at approximately 3500prm.
Taking your advice into consideration, I raised the rear feet and this enabled further decrease in fan speed. I guess one of those laptop stands will augment this effect, and I will look into them.
Anyway, thank you for your help!
Thanks,
Richard
