Macbook pro retina 13 mag safe

Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro retina 13 (early 2013). I accidentally broke my Mag Safe 2 (60W) adapter. So went out and bought a new one but unfortunately the 60W was sold out everywhere, so went online to see if I could use a Mag Safe 2 (85W) and every single forum said it was OK to use that one, since the computer knows how much juice to pull. Well, I don't think that's correct. My battery was working just fine, and ever since I started charging it with my new 85W charger, the battery lasts less than half the time. Is anybody else having the same problem? If so, do you think I need to replace my battery and charger?

Power Adapter/ cord wattage
“Power adapters for Intel-based Apple notebooks are available in 45W, 60W, and 85W varieties. Although you should always use the proper wattage adapter for your Apple notebook, you can use an adapter of a higher wattage without issue.”

Did you buy a non-Apple brand MagSafe power adapter? Return it if you can.
Order one from Apple store.
Best.

I get my magsafe 2 60w is it safe to charge macbook pro retina  15 pouces

It's not a good idea to use a lower wattage power supply than what the machine shipped with. The 15" comes with an 85 watt adapter and that's what you should be using. You can go in the other direction with no problem, like using an 85 watt on a machine that came with a 60. If I were you, I go get the correct charger.

  • Is it safe for my MacBook pro retina plugged in while it's off?

Hello Everyone, so I have read that putting your MacBook pro in sleep while plugged in all the time is safe as long as you run the battery once in awhile, but what about if I want to shut down my MacBook pro Retina off without unplugging the charger and just leave it on for the rest of the night and then just turn my macbook pro back on still without unplugging the charger? Is it safe, no KABOOM!!? Lol ok I'm going to sleep now and I will turn off my Mac and unplug it for now until further instruction. Thanks in advance and good night!

you can leave it plugged in - when fully charged - charging stops to avoid overcharing your battery.
do not fully discharge your battery to 0% constantly, doing so will shorten your battery life.
    good luck

  • Old MagSafe Airline Adapter not working with MacBook Pro Retina

I've got an old MagSafe Airline Adapter (one I bought when it first came out) that I'm trying to use with my MacBook Pro Retina (using a MagSafe to MagSafe 2 Converter). Sometimes the light is green, sometimes it is off, sometimes the battery icon in the menu bar shows plugged in, sometimes not, but in any combination, the machine is not maintaining charge; the battery discharges at a normal rate for just being on battery. For giggles, I borrowed my seatmate's year-or-two-old MagSafe adapter (the one with the right-angle plug) and plugged it into my machine (also using the MagSafe to MagSafe 2 converter). The light on that one turns orange, and though the battery icon shows "Not Charging", the battery is maintaining charge with the newer adapter. (My adapter, BTW, is able to maintain the charge on her 13" MacBook Pro.)
Was there a change to recent versions of this adapter to make the new ones work with the Retina MacBooks where the old one will not?

the green light on the mag safe turns on?
you should reduce your usage to a very minimal amount as I'm sure the airline doesn't output a strong enough signal for you to be running full screen films with high res. Maybe you should close your macbook P and see if it is charged after a little while of not using it.
turn your screen lights down, turn the sound gHZ down, quit all the downloadin'.
if you must run flash make sure you have the latest version (from the adobe site).
You're computer is intense and if you use it more then it's gaining, of course it going to be draining .
But this is probably moot since you're probably on said plane now. or was.
I'd imagine if you're not satisfied with the product you should return it detailing your situation.

  • Late 2013 13" Macbook Pro Retina Out of the Box Condition

I have just purchased my LAte 2013 Macbook Pro Retina 13" 2.6Ghz i5 512 Gb. Out of the box, it won't boot because there is no charge in it, and the keys feel a little less tactile, a littile stiff than the one on my Late 2012 Macbook Pro Retina. Also when the Macbook Pro finally booted up(after i plugged in the mag safe adaptor) I checked the battery status and there is already 3 charge cycles on it. Are these normal for an expensive Macbook Pro out of the box?
    Thanks!

Whether any previously built Mac notebook of any model came out of the box with a charge in the battery doesn't mean currently manufactured unit will or does. There have been several posts on these forum about the newest units not having a battery charge. I suspect there are many more units then are represented on these forum simply because most people would actually connect the AC charger as the first step in setting up a new computer and then you have others that don't think anything about it.
Who said the battery was Discharged Deeply. Just being at 0% of a charge doesn't mean it ws Deeply Discharged. Sure it isn't the best thing to do once the battery has been charged fully to constantly discharge it to 0%.
The battery has built in circuitry
Since this is the second brand new system you have had that has come like this, and many other it seems, I would say it is normal for the newly built systems.

  • I'm receiving SBBOD randomly on my Macbook Pro Retina running Yosemite

For the last several weeks I've occasionally received a SBBBOD when performing various tasks on my system. Not sure what in particular might be causing it but I feel like more often than not it is when I'm using Safari. It always results in a spinning ball and the only thing I can do is move windows around but can not click anything. It requires me to force power off the system.
Most importantly, sometimes when rebooting I'll experience a flashing folder icon as if the system can not find the bootable drive. If I power off the system again, it will usually load the OS. This pointed to potential HDD corruption and so I ran the necessary checks there and never got any HDD error reported. Also have run memtests and overall Apple Hardware Tests...all with no errors reported.
I recently updated Java Plugin and also ran an EtreCheck as recommended in other similarly reported problems. Here is the results of that report...

Thank you in advance for any support you can offer here.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(1309 ' 0.5 0.25 50 1000 15 5120 1000 25000 6 6 5 1 0 100 ' 51 25600 4 10 25 5120 102400 1000 25 1536 500 40 500 300 85 25 20480 262144     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

  • Macbook Pro retina have a network problem that I need to restart my computer before getting it's able to connect to internet

Macbook Pro Retina 15" 2012, Mountain Lion OS pre-installed.
    Case 1:
It connects to WiFi home network and internet fine.
    Put the machine to sleep.
Upon waking up, it can scan for my home network that it used to connect to, but either not able to connect, or even after it connects, it just can't let me access internet.
Restarting the machine can revive by getting it connects properly to internet.
Toggling the Bluetooth won't help here.
    Case 2:
It connects to network using USB ethernet adapter.
Same case, everything works fine before sleep. After sleeping for some time, it's not able to connect to the internet any more unless I do a restart.
It's able to access local area network though, as I'm able to see some local network machines in my Finder window. Yes, I clicked on them and able to connect to their share folders. But just can't get through internet.
OS Problem? I'm not able to roll back to other OS, I swear I don't want to go through that painful process.
Hardware problem : WiFi card? Don't think so, because I can't get to internet even I immediately switch to USB ethernet adapter.
Hardware problem : USB ethernet? It works fine in other non-Mac machines.
There got to be something wrong in somewhere that it doesn't re-establish the connection to the internet, no matter what I do.
None of the functions in the network utility tool can help.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

My MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) is too slow after installing Yosemite version 10.10.1. All programs take for ever to load especially Safari and even chrome. I regret upgrading to yosemite, it was all fine with Maverick. Any suggestions ? ThankYou

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt.
While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal.
They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • How to get new Macbook Pro Retina (late 2013) to detect external monitor via HDMI?

Hi everyone, this is my first Mac and for the most part it's been really, really wonderful.
This is my first major glitch:  I cannot get it to detect my external display:  It is an ASUS PA248Q, manufactured Aug 2012.
The HDMI cable according to my Amazon history is at least 1.3c from 2010,  "Fanatic Digital Imperial Series Gold-Plated HDMI Cable (6 feet)".
It works with perfectly connecting an AmazonTV box to an old Samsung TV, with vivid clarity, unlike our cableTV signal.
Just in case, I have a new HDMI cable on order, which claims to be of newest standards.
The Macbook Pro Retina (late 2013) has the standard Intel Iris from the Haswell chips, as well as Nvidia GT 750M, the latter which I don't think has been used yet.
The ASUS display says:  HDMI NO SIGNAL.
I have tried shutting them down and replugging the cable.  I don't know what the ideal order is.  The Macbook Pro is plugged into AC power, as suggested.
In System Preferences>Display, I press the Option key to select "Detect Displays" option (seriously unintuitive).
I have also tried resetting the NVRAM:
I shut the machine down.  Pressed the power button, then quickly held the quadruplet:  Option-Command-P-R  (a double handful) and waited for the machine to chime a 2nd time.  Tried to detect external display no luck.
    Next, I reset the SMC:
I shut the machine down.  Then I pressed Shift-Control-Option-Power   for about 5 to 10s.  Then I turned on the machine normally.
NVRAM & SMC steps were from an old youtube video, as the instructions I had did not explain how to do so clearly.
Please let me know if I"m doing something wrong.
Seems so exorbitant to pay $350 for Apple Care;  that's a the cost for a whole new cheap laptop.
I will search the forums again.  If anyone answers this,  thank so much!

    Hello there, willr314.
It sounds like you've covered most of the practical steps found in this Knowledge Base article:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1573#1
No video or no signal, image distortion, "snow," or flickering
    Check connections
When using an external display be sure to check the following:
If you're using an Apple notebook, confirm the AC power cable or adapter is securely connected to the computer and the cable providing power to the display is also secure. It is always good to have your notebook connected to AC power when an external display is in use.
Confirm display adapters are fully seated in their respective connections and that they are supported models and for the computer and display. Refer to these articles to assist you with adapter compatibility and further configuration information:
    Monitor and Display Adapter Table
About Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters
Apple Mini DisplayPort adapters: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Thunderbolt ports and displays: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolutionStart by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
The article does offer some additional links and recommendations as well:
These articles may offer additional assistance and information about displays and video adapters:
Apple Portables: How to use your computer in closed lid mode with an external display
Apple Cinema Display (30-inch DVI) has 1280 x 800 as the maximum available resolution
Mac Pro (Early 2009), Mac Pro (Mid 2010): Supported display configurations
For assistance with Retina displays, please see Frequently asked questions about using a Retina display.
If you tried all of these steps for your display and the video issues persist, contact Apple technical support or take your Apple computer to the nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).
Note: Diagnostic fees may apply for issues not covered under warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP).
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

  • Macbook pro Retina 15" reboot issues

    Hi all
I am a newcomer to the community.
Right I've had the my brand new macbook pro retina 15' since the begining of september 2014 which came with Mavericks. All seems fine back then
I did the terrible thing and upgraded to the yosmite when it came out and I've starting to have issues , with the wifi dropage etc etc
My most recently issue which has come to light is that , after I've RESTORED Yosemite many times (yesterday was the last time) when ever i use the computer and then reboot after few minutes to some time the computer takes super long and hangs at rebooting???????
I get a that "progress spinning chopped up circle thing" staright after i reboot and sometimes it just hangs there with the Fans going full blast till i need to hold the power button down! like what the ****
does anyone have this issue? or know how to resolve this? or do i need to bring it back to apple?
My macbook is top spec 15 inch Mid 2014 one with only the minus of the 1tb hard drive upgrade , however i feel its should not be having these problem.
I must admit since i have the macbook pro , I've used Parallels a lot , bootcamp and FileVault encrypting (which is now turned off) testing things out. i thought as this is a top spec it should handle this no problems as i got this for a development machine. Ever since Ive got Yosemite its like its slowed down and become sluggish.
When I had maverick i did not experience a ton of problems like Yosemite, it booted up in 8 secs and shutdown immediately  althought i did not test the file vault encrypting under mavericks.
Also sometimes when my Fans will be on full blast when i am not doing anything intensive, like when i browse with chrome or finished with parallel.
I be grateful if anyone can help me solve this since its now not a issue of restoring which I've done many times. I dunno if I've pushed the SSD to to much or something......
Is there a way to revert had to mavericks? without a usb or cd
    Thanks
    Zyco

Before trying to go back to Mavericks, try performing an SMC and NVRAM/PRAM reset. These two components control several functions of your MacBook Pro and by resetting them to their default values it may clear up the issue that you're seeing.
    To reset the SMC:
Turn off your computer and ensure the MagSafe adapter is plugged in.
Hold down Shift-Control-Option on the left side of your keyboard, and then hold down the Power button at the same time.
Wait about 5 seconds, and then release the keys. You may see the light on the power adapter change colour momentarily.
Don't turn the computer on just yet, we'll do that in the next step.
    To reset the NVRAM/PRAM:
Press the Power button and then immediately hold down Command-Option-P-R on your keyboard at the same time.
Continue holding these keys until your MacBook Pro restarts and you hear the start up chime a second time.
Release the keys and continue booting into OS X.
If this doesn't work, try booting into Safe Mode. This will help you determine whether a software issue is causing your problem. To boot your Mac into Safe Mode, restart the computer and hold down the Shift key until you see the Apple logo appear on the screen. It may take a little while longer to boot up as OS X will verify the state of your disk and clear out certain caches and temporary files. Once booted into Safe Mode, try restarting and see if the issue persists.

  • Macbook Pro Retina mid 2012 low fps in bootcamp

    Hello,
My English is not so good, so sorry if it's not correct, but I hope anyone could help me.
I have a Macbook Pro Retina mid 2012, 2,3 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB ram, 250 GB SSD.
My problem is when I go to bootcamp for gaming I get realy low fps. The most games start at 30 fps, but then they drop immediately to 8/9 fps and a second later back to 30 fps.
It's like a car, when you drive to hard you have to slow down, but then you drive to slow so you need to go faster. He speed up and a second or 2 later he kicks on the brakes and a moment later he speed up again and kicks again on the brakes.
Even with al the game setting on realy low and the lowest resolution. And that al the time in every game. My bootcamp is Windows 8 but in Windows 7 did I have the same problem. I did already a SMC reset and Pram reset and 5 clean installs. But nothing works. I installed al the updates in OS X en in Windows. There al alrealy some forums about this problem, but by them was a SMC reset enough. Maybe something is wrong with my Nvidia grapihc card. The problems starts everytime when the Nvidia card need to do this work.
it's quite an annoying problem, it's not a cheap laptop, but my old laptop ( 2 years old ) are the gaming performs better compared to this one. I think the problems start after this SMC update http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1559?viewlocale=en_US but I'm not quite sure.
Are there more people with this problem, please let me know. And maybe how you solve it.
I hope realy if any one could help me.
If you know a anser, please give it in a comment
    Thanks,

    Hello gerwintiemens,
I recommend resetting your SMC and your PRAM. Perhaps even a safeboot as well.

  • How do I downgrade my MacBook Pro Retina Display from Mountain Lion to Lion?

I have a brand new MacBook Pro Retina Display that came with OS X 10.8.1.
I´m an audio engineer so I work with Pro Tools, tons of plug-ins etc... Some of my software doesn't work with Mountain Lion just yet. Some of them haven't upgraded, and some of them I need to purchase a latest version, which is not cheap at all in the audio world. So I'd like to hang on to Lion for a while until I decide to upgrade everything to Mountain Lion.
I've seen other posts about this -> https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4148927?start=0&tstart=0
This one in particular managed to make the downgrade. However, he used to have OS X 10.7.4 in his retina display when he bought it. Which is something that doesn't happen in my case.
If you read the other post you can see that several methods have been tried.
Is it really safe to completely erase my hard drive and to a clean install of Lion? Will it work perfectly fine on my Retina Display?
I went to one Apple Store, and the guy asked around and told me they haven't done it before, so since they didn't know whether it was going to work they couldn't do it. He told me to do it myself and if something happened to my laptop, "just bring it in and we'll reinstall the stock OS X again."
Since the laptop is brand new I don't mind erasing everything, all my stuff is already backed up.
    So help me please?

The short of it is if it came with 10.8.1 you can't install an OS less than that.

  • Macbook pro retina boot failure

Just got my new Macbook Pro Retina.  Migrated my applications and data from my Macbook Air.  Everything worked great.  Apple Update advised that new updates were available.  I accepted and ran the updates.  Now it gets a kernal panic at boot.  Can boot into Safe Mode however.  I used Command R to reinstall OSX but that did not correct my problem.  Same kernal panic persists.  Am reinstalling OSX one more time.  Understand the error is due to a Thunderbolt Driver update but don't understand why the reinstallation of OSX did not fix my problem.  Pretty depressing to purchase a brand new computer only to have it fail within moments of getting it due to software.  Couldn't reach Apple Care this evening.

You have my sympathies. I bought a MacBook Pro Retina. I tried to migrate my data 10 times in at least four different ways with no luck whatsoever.
Apple tech support wanted to help but couldn't. Try this. Try that. Nothing worked.
I blame Apple. Why would you put a new port, Thunderbolt, into a new computer without also putting adapter cables into production. It's a $20 part. It not a matter of easier to use it's a matter of use at all.
The Thunderbolt to ethernet was just not up to the task of a 250gb data transfer.
I couldn't use Time Machine because some other bright Apple engineer never thought that someone would use Time Machine to migrate their data. I got an error message telling me it was not possible to go from my 2 year old MacBook Pro to the new one. So they knew there was a problem but they didn't bother to fix it.
After wasting 12 hours, I had to rebuild my system by hand. Something I haven't had to do for the last 6 years. I'm still trying to get my house of cards back to where it was.

  • How do I erase the free space on macbook pro retina?

I went to erase the free space on my MacBook Pro Retina in the Disk Utility but it says not available for this type of drive. Is there a way I can get around this?

You can't use Disk Utility to securely erase a Solid State Disk drive, because of the fact that SSD's have limited write capability, unlike hard drives, thus have to protect the sectors from as little writes as possible.
In fact TRIM (wear leveling) is enabled to write new data to the least used sectors on a SSD each time.
The NSA guidelines for secure data destruction on SSD's is to grind them into a fine powder.
If you don't require this level of data destruction, you can do this trick below, but not often or you'll premaurely wear out your SSD.
Finder > Duplicate a small file repeatly in a folder until slightly more than 50% of the remaining free space on the SSD is used up, (use Activity Monitor) then delete this folder.
Then duplicate a different small file repeatly in another folder in the same manner.
What this will do is, because of the small file, OS X will fill the smallest unused spots on the SSD, the duplicates will fill the remaining free space half way, then the second folder will (because of TRIM) fill the other remaining 50% of the free space.
You can't fill your boot drive or the machine can refuse to function or boot, but because of the wear leveling this should overwrite all your available free space on the SSD once.
If you have a laptop and TimeMachine, there is a hidden database on the boot drive which will store a copy of the deleted data.
Then there is "versions" and it's possible a copy of the deleted data is stored in that cache file still on the SSD.
I can advise how to delete the TimeMachine backup file on the boot drive, but not the "versions" database or what it contains.
How do I securely delete data from the machine?
If your really paranoid it's likely best to reformat the entire MacintoshHD partition from recovery and then with a new user, then do the Finder > Duplicate procedure to overwrite the deleted data off the SSD, this way the "versions" and TimeMachine databases are also overwritten.
    Nothing is safe anymore.

  • Memory leakage Macbook pro retina 15inch Early 2013

    Hi,
This is my first posting to the Apple community, so please forgive me if have missed a previous posting on this subject.
I have an early 2013 15 inch MBPro retina running 8 gigs.  My previous device was a MBpro 15 early 2008 4 gigs of ram.  I never expected the 2013 with double the ram to be constantly dropping below 2 gigs with only FireFox and/or MS word running.   The older 2008 device used only 2 gigs to run these programs.  It appears that the 2013 model is using 6 gigs.
I took the 2013 15 inch  MBpro retina to the Apple store for the Geniuses to run their diagnostics.  They said my device was running normally.  To prove such, they simultaneously opened Jim Carrey's web site 8 times and showed me that all of his the crazy stuff was working in each window.  They said that it is normal for a SSD machine to run on low memory.
Unfortunately, it has been my experience that when my memory drops when just using my normal Firefox based surfing,  my track pad scrolling starts to get very sluggish until my "memory clean" kicks in at 1.6 gigs and brings the memory up to around  2.5 gigs.  As I continue to surf, then the process repeats itself.  I never expected my old 2008 device to use significantly less ram running light applications better than my new 2013 device.
I have seen others post an "EtreCheck" and hopefully by posting mine, somebody can find what the Apple Geniuses could not.
    Thank you for your help!!
