Macbook pro retina 15" heat issues!

Hello,
So i'm currently using a Macbook pro retina 15", the base model with two graphic cards, late 2013, and while running a game like Elder Scroll Online on my mac, it heats up a lot, i want to know if it's a normal thing to happen and won't damage my mac, or i should stop playing it to prevent any further damage?
Thanks in advance.

Is this a "mac" thing?
I don't know, really, because I know that when I'm using Windows 7 on my MacBook Pro, it heats up as well - that's just what Flash does. Hopefully, with the coming of HTML video (which you can test on YouTube - although not all videos will play correctly) the need for Flash will slowly be eliminated.
But what you describe is 'normal' for Macs, I know - I haven't had a dedicated PC in - oh, since 1985, anyway!

When you see an exclamation point in the Wi-Fi menu, from the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
Click the Assist me button and select Assistant. Follow the prompts. You may get a warning that Wi-Fi is not available, that you're too far from the base station, or that you're using the wrong password.
Assuming that you've ruled out those possibilities, restart the computer and try again. If there's no change, click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane and authenticate, if necessary. From the Location menu at the top of the window, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click  Apply and test.

You should have a backup in the first place. If you don't, buy an external drive (they're inexpensive these days) and make a Time Machine or a clone backup (using Carbon Copy Cloner).
Then take your machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and let them diagnose the computer. See if they can isolate what may possibly be making the 'clicking' sound.

  • MacBook Pro Retina - Fan/Heat During File Transfer

    Hey guys,
I just had my MacBook Pro Retina in for repair because of an 4HDD/11/400000000: Sata (0,0) error and they replaced the SSD. I have a 2.7/16/768 configuration. One of the main issues I noticed was periodically slow file transfers, load times and boots hanging etc. and a secondary reason was a high-pitched buzzing with heavy disk usage.
My question now is... when I'm doing something as simple as a large file transfer, or installing some apps etc. the MacBook really heats up and the fans really start spinning sometimes. I've never known SSD access to heat up a computer so much. Is this normal behaviour that everyone else is experiencing with their systems? To clarify: this happens when not doing anything else with the machine other than copying files around, also when copying files to/from my external drive which is connected through FireWire on the back of my 27" Thunderbolt display which is then of course connected to the MacBook via the Thunderbolt port.
Expected behaviour? Seems odd to me, but this is my first MacBook so don't know if that's the 'norm' or not.

I've managed to get the fan speed down to a reasonable, less audible level by using that old VRAM terminal command to enable me to keep the internal display disabled whilst the lid is open. I've had to shift quite a lot round on my desk to make this happen, but I guess it was the only way. It now runs 3 screens under similar loads at approximately 3500prm.
Taking your advice into consideration, I raised the rear feet and this enabled further decrease in fan speed. I guess one of those laptop stands will augment this effect, and I will look into them.
Anyway, thank you for your help!
    Thanks,
    Richard

  • Macbook pro Retina 15" reboot issues

    Hi all
I am a newcomer to the community.
Right I've had the my brand new macbook pro retina 15' since the begining of september 2014 which came with Mavericks. All seems fine back then
I did the terrible thing and upgraded to the yosmite when it came out and I've starting to have issues , with the wifi dropage etc etc
My most recently issue which has come to light is that , after I've RESTORED Yosemite many times (yesterday was the last time) when ever i use the computer and then reboot after few minutes to some time the computer takes super long and hangs at rebooting???????
I get a that "progress spinning chopped up circle thing" staright after i reboot and sometimes it just hangs there with the Fans going full blast till i need to hold the power button down! like what the ****
does anyone have this issue? or know how to resolve this? or do i need to bring it back to apple?
My macbook is top spec 15 inch Mid 2014 one with only the minus of the 1tb hard drive upgrade , however i feel its should not be having these problem.
I must admit since i have the macbook pro , I've used Parallels a lot , bootcamp and FileVault encrypting (which is now turned off) testing things out. i thought as this is a top spec it should handle this no problems as i got this for a development machine. Ever since Ive got Yosemite its like its slowed down and become sluggish.
When I had maverick i did not experience a ton of problems like Yosemite, it booted up in 8 secs and shutdown immediately  althought i did not test the file vault encrypting under mavericks.
Also sometimes when my Fans will be on full blast when i am not doing anything intensive, like when i browse with chrome or finished with parallel.
I be grateful if anyone can help me solve this since its now not a issue of restoring which I've done many times. I dunno if I've pushed the SSD to to much or something......
Is there a way to revert had to mavericks? without a usb or cd
    Thanks
    Zyco

Before trying to go back to Mavericks, try performing an SMC and NVRAM/PRAM reset. These two components control several functions of your MacBook Pro and by resetting them to their default values it may clear up the issue that you're seeing.
    To reset the SMC:
Turn off your computer and ensure the MagSafe adapter is plugged in.
Hold down Shift-Control-Option on the left side of your keyboard, and then hold down the Power button at the same time.
Wait about 5 seconds, and then release the keys. You may see the light on the power adapter change colour momentarily.
Don't turn the computer on just yet, we'll do that in the next step.
    To reset the NVRAM/PRAM:
Press the Power button and then immediately hold down Command-Option-P-R on your keyboard at the same time.
Continue holding these keys until your MacBook Pro restarts and you hear the start up chime a second time.
Release the keys and continue booting into OS X.
If this doesn't work, try booting into Safe Mode. This will help you determine whether a software issue is causing your problem. To boot your Mac into Safe Mode, restart the computer and hold down the Shift key until you see the Apple logo appear on the screen. It may take a little while longer to boot up as OS X will verify the state of your disk and clear out certain caches and temporary files. Once booted into Safe Mode, try restarting and see if the issue persists.

  • Jaybird headphones and Macbook Pro Retina bluetooth connectivity issues

I recently purchased the Jaybird Bluebuds X Premium headphones and for awhile it would connect to my new Macbook Pro Retina 15'' via bluetooth, but now it doesn't anymore. The headphones connect just fine to my phone (iPhone 4S), and other Macbook Pros (not retina), but they do not connect to other Macbook Pro Retinas. I was wondering if this was a connectivity issue with Macbook Pro Retinas and if so how can I get around it to connect the headphones again?
    Thanks

    Hey there LongHorn16,
It sounds like your Bluetooth headphones aren't working with this one computer, but there is no issue with other devices that you have. I would start with these 2 steps from the following article:
    Restart your computer
Sometimes a simple restart of your Mac is all it takes to get things running smoothly again. You may also want to try resetting your computer's PRAM and NVRAM.
    Reset your Bluetooth device
Try turning your device off and then on again. If that doesn't resolve the issue, see if you can reset your device—refer to the documentation that came with your device for instructions.
    Bluetooth Quick Assist

If it still doesn't work, then I would next use this article to remove the device:

Then restart your computer and pair it again:

  • MacBook Pro Retina 13" - Battery Issues after one week!

    Specs of Unit
MacBook Pro retina 13" - bought literally one week ago
Processor  2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Graphics  Intel Iris 1024 MB
    OS X Version 10.9.2
Problem - Okay so the estimated battery life of these babies are 9 hours approx.
After a full charge I am getting an EST. time of about 4.30-5 hours battery life, bare in mind this is with NO programs running and NO background tasks sneakily rinsing the battery.
Yes, I have tried reseting the system management.
Yes, I have tried safe mode.
Please help me, is the battery faulty and should I really go to mac store??
Or is this  a software issue?
    Thanks

Does switching off Wifi make a difference?
In UK and USA (and quite a few other places) you have 14 days from purchase to get a refund or replacement - no questions asked.  If there is nothing running then this does sound to be depleting rather fast.  My late 2013 13" MBP retina gives me about 10 hours using Pages (several documents open) and e-mail only.
Get a replacement and see if you get the same problem.

  • Flash movie in Safari in Macbook Pro Retina Display zooming issue

    Hello,
On Macbook Pro Retina Display in Safari browser, zooming any flash application in browser does not work properly.
I have made a YouTube video showing the problem in action:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bi1d1x8bpnA
When I zoom in and out using two fingers pinch zooming does not go as expected - it is zooming into bits outside of the zoom area while the zooming is in the process.
    Please fix the issue.
    Thanks.

    P.S:
I have also created an Adobe BugBase bug report here:
    https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=3323043

    Hi Steffen....!!
The phenomenon which you just described is absolutely not common in the late 2013 retina macbook. Even I have the same model but I have never noticed such sounds neither during normal operations nor after tilting it.
I am afraid, but it seems to be a hardware issue. Might be because the fan assembly has become loose due to which its touching the other parts.
There is also a possibility  that some dirt or small piece of something might have gone inside the macbook through the air vents which may be interfering with the fan mechanism. I think so you can try to open the back cover of the macbook and see if something is interfering with the fans if your macbook is out of warranty. If its covered with Apple care, I suggest take it to Apple store and let them diagnose the issue.
    Hope this helps......

  • Trade in value, 10 month old Macbook Pro Retina w/ WIFI issues?

I have a late 2013 Macbook Pro, Retina, upgraded memory from base model, 256 of awesome Samsung PCI-IE storage with the apparently very common wireless card issue. Web pages don't load, erratic ping times and high packet loss. It was purchased at an Apple store.
What is the common scenario one would expect if they simply want the new model, or would I be making an assumption that the wireless card issue was resolved at some point?
As a consumer, what would you expect?

I would have expected that you would exercise your warranty. We are only users like you. No one here can be expected to know what your scenario would be like. But every day you waste on these forums is one day less remaining on your warranty.

    Hello!
I just installed Bootcamp on my 2013 MacBook Pro Retina 15", and some windows and applications are very small. YouTube's Control Panel is really small. Running OBS, the text and windows are scrunched and small. Running The Old Republic, the window is super small.

  • Macbook pro retina 15 battery issues.

I am using macbook pro retina 15" 2013 late. I just bought it 2weeks ago and battery age is 1.6months. The battery max at the first time was around 8900 but now it is around 8300 with just 23cycles. I am wondering my battery has problems or not.

  • MacBook Pro Retina 15 battery issue

    Hello,
I'm having issue with my battery on MacBook Pro Retina 15 Mid 2012. System says Replace now but I have only 753 Cycle Counts.
Run Hardware test and got the following error code: 4bat/1/40000000: 0x80c53f90
Tried PRAM and SMC reset but nothing helps.
It there any chance to fix this without replacing the battery?
    Regards.

Not a chance: this is a goner. And don't take that "Replace now" message too lightly: a failing (swelling) battery can cause serious damage to your MBP.

  • Macbook Pro Retina, HDMI Sound issues

When I connect my macbook pro retina to my SONY TV via HDMI the picture works but I can't get any sound.  I went into the sound settings and selected SONY but it tells me the select a device has no output controls.

This happened to me the other day, with an LG TV. Although it's not en eegent solution, I found that unplugging the HDMI, turning the sound up on the laptop, then plugging it in again worked. Until Apple releases a fix for the OS, that's the only thing I've found to work.

  • MacBook Pro Retina Thunderbolt Ethernet issues

    hi Folks
I have a macbook Pro Retina 15" here, using the thunderbolt ethernet adaptor.
if i boot the machine into windows 7 with the ethernet thunderbolt adaptor plugged in,  it works fine.
however if i remove it while windows 7 is loaded , and then plug it back in, it wont work  until i reboot , back into windows 7.
this is using the drivers as supplied in the boot camp installation package.
I   have tried this with numerous mac machines  and the thunderbolt adaptor, and they all perform the same.
ie if you remove the thunderbolt adaptor  , and then plug it back in, you will have to reboot the mac back into windows 7, before it works properly again.
does anyone know why this is? and is there any way around having to reboot?
    thanks

So I've noticed similar behaviour on my Macbook Air. It's a slightly different set of kit, since it's connected to a Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock (http://www.belkin.com/uk/p/P-F4U055/). I'm on my second one of these because first one went back because it kept on dropping the internet connection (sounds familiar?) - and it *might* have been occurring when waking the system from sleep (I didn't make a mental note).
Anyway the replacement was working perfectly, until today - when it's started to drop it's internet connection again, and this time I'm pretty certain that it's related to waking from sleep. The main difference now is that I *just* upgraded to Mavericks, and I wonder if the sleep problem has reared its ugly head again in the latest version of MacOS?
All in all I have to say I'm pretty disappointed with the reliability of thunderbolt & the Belkin Dock thingie. Although it should be said that a single lead from my Macbook Air to the Express Dock is simultaneously carrying: video (1920x1200), Firewire800, 3xUSB3, gigabit ethernet and sound, so I'm not that surprised this technology is prone to the odd glitch, and the cables get really warm too!
It would be great to have some solid information from Apple/Belkin about this.
    Cheers, Jon
