Macbook Pro Retina 15" mid 2013 reboots after panic.

Just bought a mid 2013 Macbook Pro Retina last week. Haven't had any problems with it until today when I came back to my computer and there was a grey screen stating there had been a problem and the computer needed to be restarted. Below are the two system diagnostic reports. Is this a bug or a problem with the logic board/graphic switching?

That kind of panic can be caused by an adapter for an external display that isn't connected to anything. See this thread.
There are also reports that the panic may be triggered by waking an external display from sleep. To test that theory, open the Energy Saver preference pane and click the lock icon to unlock the settings, if necessary. Move the Display sleep slider all the way to the Never position on the right. See whether there's any change.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 15 late 2013 won't turn on after being sleep

I've been having the an issue with my macbook pro retina 15 late 2013 that I bought 2 weeks ago. After a long time of being slept when I try to turn it on, it won't. I press the power button several times and nothing happens, after a long time of trying then it turns on. and I get the message that the machine turn off because of an error but nothing else. I think that's not ok for such an expensive laptop. I had the first version of the macbook pro retina display and never had an issue like this even though I install a lot of apps from app store and third party apps also. I was running parallels with 3 microsoft windows os and never had an issue like this. In this case I haven't installed anything on my new macbook pro besides parallels and the windows seven os. So I don't know if I should take it to the apple store maybe they could change it for another one I don't know.
Does anyone have the same problem?
    sorry for my english

Well I have this problem too, do you get a message saying 'an error has occured please press a button to restart' or something similar when you just brosing the internet or watching a movie.
P.S I use safari and QT.

  • MacBook Pro retina 13" (late 2013, Haswell) why is the highest resolution rendered in 3360x2100, which the system obviously can't handle?!

    Hey Apple and Apple users,
I just recently switched from an MacBook Air (mid 2013) to the new Haswell MacBook Pro retina 13" (late 2013 model).
The main reason to do so was the better screen and the option to run higher scaled resolutions, as advertised.
I was willing to trade in the Air's low weight, smaller formfactor and the extra batterylife for the better screen.
    When it comes to resolutions:
1280x800 is just a joke nowadays, why is the MacBook Pro still based on it? 13" and 1440x900 work quite fine...see MacBook Air.
1440x900 is okay in everyday life situations, but sometimes you just need "more space" as the third scaling option calls it as well in the display-settings.
1680x1050 on 13" can sometimes be challenging, but it is really fine if you need to work and have a lot UI elements to deal with (Photoshop etc.)
So 1680x1050 scaled on the 2560x1600 screen would be my daily driver for work. So I expected a scaling factor of "1.5238..." (2560/1680) will be used most of the time.
Frankly spoken...I am really disappointed by the 13" retina MacBook Pro and the way OS X Mavericks is handling the scaling.
It obiously works well and responsive with the 1280x800 non-scaling resolution ("best for retina, scaling factor 2: 1280 --> 2560).
    Is still "okay-snappy" at 1440x900 (scaling factor 1.777...: 1440 --> 2560).
But it totally breaks down at 1680x1050 (scaling factor 1.523...: 1680 --> 2560).
I use "Mission Control" all the time and it is stuttering and slow...overall a sluggish and unbearable experience.
The same goes for Desktop-Switching by swiping the screens or resizing and moving windows and files around.
So I was wondering why...and then I noticed that when taking a screenshot of my entire screen (CMD + 3) the image size of the screenshot was 3360x2100 and not the expected 2560x1600.
This means Mavericks is not scaling the UI with the appropriate factor (see above). For retina MacBooks it ist simply rendering one pixel of the classic, non-retina Interface in now 4 pixels (2x2) and sending this straight to the screen, which then "scales" it down to the resolution it is able to display.
Why is this bothering me? – Because the machine has to do a lot more work to render the higher resolution that can't even be displayed, due to the screens limitations.
    2560x1600 = 4096000 pixels = 100%
    3360x2100 = 7056000 pixels = 172%
This means the MacBook has to render 72% more information than actually can be displayed on the built-in screen and are just lost.
Of course this makes the overall UI feel sluggish and idly! Especially with the not that performant Intel Iris IGP and no dedicated graphics card.
All this extra "rendering" just results in a worse battery life due to the extra work that the graphics card and CPU have to do.
First, Apple...are you serious about this?
What can we do about this?
Is there a way to have this properly scaled?
    Thanks in advance to everyone.

Okay...I thought deeply about this issue.
Even looking into ways to maybe fixing this on the software side. But it occured to me that this is to deeply embedded into the system that it won't be possbile to come up with a sufficient third-party solution.taht
The problem is that there is no intermediate step inbetween "standard DPI" graphics and "HiDPI" (image-resources named "[email protected]").
But there should be one, to minimize the amount of image information that needs to be processed by the device.
This effects especially the MacBook Pro retina 13", as it has the less powerful Intel Iris IGP, when performing on the highest scaled resolution (equivalent to 1650x1080).
As well as the MacBook Pro retina 15" without a dedicated, second Graphics Unit, when performing on the highest possible scaled resolution (equivalent to 1920x1200).
Those devices don't have enough resources to handle the consequential "HiDPI" resolutions of 3360x2100 for the 13" and 3840x2400 for the 15" model.
(Comment: 3840x2400 = 9,2MP, which is more than the standard 4K resolution of 3840x2160.
I analyzed the scaling factors as follows:
Factor "2" to display 1280x800 on the 13" model and 1440x900 on the 15" model in HiDPI.
Factor "1.777..." would be required to display 1440x900 on the 2560x1600 screen of the 13" model.
Factor "1.714..." would be required to display 1650x1080 on the 2880x1800 screen of the 15" model.
Factor "1.523..." would be required to display 1650x1080 on the 2560x1600 screen of the 13" model.
Factor "1.5" would be required to display 1920x1200 on the 2800x1800 screen of the 15" model.
As all the models seem to have no problem with rendering the intermediate scaling step (1440x900 for the 13" and 1680x1050 for the 15" model) at HiDPI, hence with the scaling factor 2. There is no real need to provide the UI-elements.
But in my opinion there is a strong need for a "MidDPI" ([email protected]) intermediate step for all the UI graphic elements that wis based on the scaling factor 1.5.
This would result in the following:
13" MacBook Pro retina with 2560x1600 screen:
    1280x 800 @ 2x = 2560x1600 (no surplus, native screen resolution)
1440x 900 @ 2x = 2880x1800 (the surplus of 1088000px = ~1MP can still be handled and compansated by the weak Iris IGP)
    1680x1050 @ 2x = 3360x2100 (the surplus of 2960000px = ~3MP is too much for the weak Iris IGP)
    NEW 1680x1050 @ 1.5x = 2520x1575 (with a small border of left=20px, bottom=13, right=20, top=12 pixels, which means ~2,2mm and ~1.3mm around the 1.5x scaled image!).
15" MacBook Pro retina with 2880x1800 screen:
    1440x900 @ 2x = 2880x1800 (no surplus, native screen resolution)
1680x1050 @ 2x = 3360x2100 (the surplus of 1872000px = ~2MP can still be handled by the Iris Pro IGP)
    1920x1200 @ 2x = 3840x2400 (the surplus of 4032000px = ~4MP can't be handled sufficiently by the Iris Pro IGP)
NEW 1920x1200 @ 1.5x = 2800x1800 (nu surplus, native screen resolution, no border needed!)
The big advantage is that all the graphics have already been remodeled for the HiDPI mode.
So scaling those "factor 2x" images down to "factor 1.5x" should be comparably easy!
    Example:
Left: Traditional "standard DPI" icon of "all my files".
Right: "@2x.png" for the "HiDPI" modes.
Middle: "@1.5x.png" suggestions for the "MidDPI" mode; easily scaled down from the lovely HiDPI graphics.
With this simple introduction of the "MidDPI" modes a significant amount of processing power can be saved.
This not only improves battery life when driving those higher scaled resolutions, but also lets the user access those resources for what really matters: processing power for the primary job that the Mac needs to get done.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 13" late 2013 lag

    Hello everybody,
4 days ago i bought Macbook Pro Retina 13" late 2013. overall i like it as a first time mac user.
my problem is it feels very slow and unstable and laggy.
    After some testing:
1024x640 (Larfer Text) - no lag best performance
1280x800 (Best for Retina) - some lag
    1440x900 (Middle) - Some lag
1680x1050 (More space) - Lots of lag
The lag is most visible when scrolling, resizing the window, and overall performance of third party applications for example netBeans is very slow under highest resolution and even with best for retina.
But what is interesting is when i conect the macbook pro to an external tv using hdmi there is no lag, very smoth.
I have contact apple support couple of times since i get the device, i even went to the apple store genius bar., all their representative in the apple store pretended that everything is ok with the mac, but some phone representative agreed with me that i have to lower the resolution when using some applications. basically there is no solution for the lag.
i am very disappointed with this issue. I should be able to use any resolution I want without any lag.
sometimes i can not feel the fast SSD it feels like an old HDD.
I think its unacceptable to pay $1500 for a computer that doesn't work as advertised
I think i am going to return it until they find a solution
Are you experiencing this problems with your macbook pro retina

Here is my post on another Forum. My problem with the UI is now solved :
    hi there,
same problem here. i had a mba 13" 2012 and wanted to switch to rmbp 13 because i need more real estate.
i sold the mba on ebay, but had a few days to compare my rmbp and mba side by side. both with exactly the same software configuration and OS Mavericks.
the mba was obviously snappier and i didn't know why.
after reading tons of threads, exchanging the rmbp one time and being frustrated i discovered this thread.
so i downloaded RDM, set the resolution to 1680x1050 (non-high-dpi!!!) and there it is, a snappy rmbp with mavericks.
(for me real estate is more import than a shiny retina thinggy, but also i don't see a bit difference between 1680 hiDPI and 1680 "normal")
i suspect the os isn't yet optimized, but i am far away from a software expert.
here is the link for RDM:

  • Macbook Pro Retina 15' (early 2013) / Creaking noise and hinge loose

    Hi,
After a couple of months of using my Macbook Pro Retina 15' (early 2013) started to creak when closing and opening. At first it wasn't loud but now, when im not using it for couple of hours and then try to open it creaks really bad. Also i've noticed that on the left side of the hinge i've got more space then on the right side. Unfortunately my guarantee is over and i live in country where we dont have Apple Stores, ony premium resellers, and their services aren't good. In the links below you can find pictures of this loose hinge. My question here is: Does anybody know what i can do, or maybe know what needs to be done. Before taking it to my "professional" service i would like to know what's wrong with my macbook, so they won't rob me

  • Macbook pro retina 13 late 2013, usb ports are intermittent with iPhone

Macbook pro retina 13 late 2013, usb ports are intermittent with iPhone
when i connect my iPhone 5 to the laptop it keeps connecting and disconnecting, I've had this problem since owning the macbook. change of cables makes no difference neither does which port i use.
is there any advice anyone could give me?
    many thanks.

    Hello there Jake,
It sounds like your phone is acting like you are connecting and disconnecing it over and over again even with another USB cable. I would use the troubleshooting in the following article to help you determine what the issue might be.
    iTunes: Resolve USB-related alerts
See if the cable connection at the device or computer has come loose or unplugged.
Unplug the cable you're using to connect your iOS device from the USB port on your computer, and then reconnect it. Then unplug it from your iOS device, and reconnect it.
Remove any third-party battery packs or cases from the device and ensure that the USB cable is connected directly to the port on the device.
If your Lightning or 30-pin cable is connected to a keyboard, display or USB hub, try plugging it directly into a USB port on the computer instead.
Close any virtualization apps (such as Parallels or VMWare).
These apps may interfere with your computer's ability to communicate over USB if they aren't properly configured, or up to date. If this resolves the issue, contact the developer of the app to see if an update is available.
    Restart your computer.
Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
If your iOS device displays the Connect to iTunes screen, reset your device and then restore it.
If you're using an accessory or third-party cable to connect your device, try using an Apple cable with the device instead.
Update to the latest version of iTunes if you haven't already.
Disconnect other USB devices from your computer, except for your keyboard and mouse. Then, reconnect your iOS device. If the issue is resolved, reconnect the other USB devices one at a time. Make sure your iOS device is still recognized by the computer after adding back each device.
If one of these steps resolves the issue, but it comes back later, make sure you haven't changed how the device is connected. For example, check to see if you plugged the device into a specific accessory, or used a specific cable that reintroduced the issue.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • Frequent Kernel Panics on Macbook Pro Retina 15" late 2013

Since a few weeks my Macbook Pro is suffering from frequent kernel panics. The logic board has already been replaced by the Apple but the panics keep occurring.
Machine specs: Macbook Pro retina 15" late 2013, 2.6Ghz Core I7, 16GB Ram, 1TB SSD. This is the model with the discrete Nvidia graphics card.
Already tried, clean install from usb, internet recovery, reset of SMC, PRAM, the machine passes the build in diagnostics and the Apple Store diagnostics.
The following panics occur without specific action from my part so they can happen when the Macbook is idle or when in use. There is no other software installed in the machine than OS X Yosemite and the latest updates.
Every kernel panic (currently 12 in the last 5 hours) show the latest loaded Kext, AppleHWSensor and latest unloaded Kext AppleFileSystemDriver which seems like more than a coincidence.
Hopefully someone can point me in the direction of cause of the problem.

  • Connecting 4k monitor to Macbook Pro retina 2012 mid

I tried to connect to Macbook Pro retina 2012 mid 15 inch 2.7GHZ model. Initially I connected using HDMI to 3840x2160 at 30 hz. I casually changed the resolution to 1080 p from scaled option. Now I no more get the option of scaling to 4k. I am unsure what is the issue over it. When I log into my windows. I am able to log in with my original 4k resolution in 30 HZ. Any guidance would be really great.
    2) I read a few forums regarding 4k with 60hz external monitor connection for macbook pro retina 2012 mid. But I couldn't get a clear solution whether it is possible or not. Would be great if someone can show lights on this too.

1- does Apple ever do exchanges for newly released products?  I bought my MacBook in jan they came out with new in mar.
If you purchased the product from Apple, not a third party, you have 14 days from the date of purchase to return it for a refund or exchange.  You are well past that.
2- if and when Apple comes out with a 4k or 5k thunderbolt display, will it be backwards compatible with my MacBook sich that I can't get the resolutions and 60mhz?
I do not have an answer to that and the Terms of Use for these forums discourages from speculating what Apple may or may not do in the future.  Having said that, from a practical business standpoint, backwards compatibility would be a sensible approach.  It has been done so in many areas in the past.
    Ciao.

    Hello, Righten.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

  • Noise from MacBook Pro Retina 13 late 2013

    Hi,
I wonder if noise from my MacBook Pro Retina 13 late 2013 is normal. I can hear it only in quiet room (first time I heard it in the middle of the night).  It’s very quiet noise. I don't know what to compare this noise. For me it’s sounds like clicking the spring. I can hear it when scrolling the webpage by trackpad, start mission control by gesture (or F3 key), changing the full screen apps by gesture or when minimize Safari or other apps. I think it depends on the graphic system work. It’s a little lauder when I use 1680x1050 scaled resolution than use 'best for display' resolution. I think the noise occurs when graphic system do some operation. Is it possible?
Today I was in Authorized Service Provider but technician heard nothing. There I can't hear this noise too, because this noise is very quiet and there is not total silence. Diagnostic tools show that everything is ok. But I still hear it in total quiet room. I tried to record this noise by iPhone but it can't do that.
Can you do me a favor and check this on your MacBook? Sit in totally quiet room, please. Set the scaled resolution 1680x1050 then bring ear closer to the keyboard and scroll a webpage (which have a lot of graphics) by gesture on the trackpad, start mission control or open notification center. Can you hear then any noise? Please listen carefully, because this is very quiet noise.
I’ll be very gratefully for your help. I wonder if only my MacBook making this noises or all MacBook Retina late 2013 making this.
    Regards,
    Mateusz

    Hi Mateusz,
I have the same issue on my new MBP retina 13 late 2013. It's not disturbing because I can hear it in only very quiet room and only if the content of the screen is changing (like scrolling web pages). It reminds me the sound of old 3'5'' hard discs. I first thought it's a hdd, but then realised my mac has only SSD.
I think it's a noise from the voltage regulators. This is normal for very high speed high-voltage signals.
But any way, MBP 13 late 2013 is the best laptop I ever saw
It's just silent and cool like an ipad. I wonder if it has a rotating cooler at all.
    Jon Bo
Thank you Jon Bo for your response. I agree with you. This noise is something like electronic noise, and it is related to the graphics card.
The rMBP 13 late 2013 works without any noise other then situations I’ve described above. The noise is so quiet that I can't hear it when e.g. external HDD working in the same room.

  • Macbook pro retina 13 late 2013 hdmi output error during wakeup

    hi
i got a pretty annoying error while my macbook pro retina 13 late 2013 is connected to a 2nd screen (i set the 2nd screen as main screen).
it all seems fine when i put the mac into sleep mode.
when i wake it up, the mac screen shows the background picture and the 2nd screen (still main screen) which should show the login frame, just shows grey/black points.
solution so far when you want to wake your mac:
    1.) wake it up
2.) immediately put it back to sleep
3.) then promptly wake it up again and get your login frame.
does anybody know how to fix that bug?
and btw, i got a second problem:
im running osx mavericks, and id like to turn off the 2nd desktop while the mac is connected to a 2nd screen.
unfortunately, this works only if you close your mac and it is connected to power supply.
my momentary solution is to turn down the brightness to zero: problem, the 2nd desktop is still there and my mouse keeps getting lost on it!
any solutions for that? like you can choose on windows "projector only"!

  • MacBook Pro Retina 15'' (Late 2013) Question

    Hello,
I'm thinking of getting a MacBook Pro Retina 15'' (Late 2013). I know it comes installed with Mavericks. I would like to know if it would be possible to install Mountain Lion, since Mavericks' iBooks is horrible and mostly screws up my huge library of books I had on iTunes. I would aslo like to avoid the countless incompatible pieces of software that have so far crashed on mavericks.
Long story short, I would like to format the new MacBook Pro and install Mountain Lion. Will it allow me to do so?
    Thanks
    Nick

    Hi ds store,
I don't think the MacBook Pro I'm talking about has mountain lion, because they were released only a few days ago and come with mavericks installed from the factory

My relatively new MacBook Pro Retina 13" late 2013 gets really warm when charging only and the power block gets kind of hot too !
shout I be worried or that's a normal thing ?

    Timmacy wrote:
It wasn't that hot before I updated to the mac osx marvicks.
Has to do with software compatiability and the OS.
I would check with sketchbook pro / corel painter 12  for a update. Sometimes version upgrades lag behind before a more compatible release.
