Macbook pro retina 15" to Dell 4K monitor

Hi
I am thinking of buying a Macbook Pro 15" retina (top of the range with Nvidia 750) and a Dell 4K monitor (UP2414Q or UP3214Q).  Can anyone confirm - preferably by having done it themselves! -  that (1) either of these monitors can be connected, at least via HDMI at 30Hz, and (2) it supports mirroring (i.e. I want to use the laptop in clamshell mode with the Dell display as the sole monitor)
I realise there is a lot of discussion about how to connect 4K monitors via Thunderbolt at 60Hz, but the faster refresh is not very important for me.  I just want to know I HDMI at 30Hz works for either of the Dell 4Ks.
Finally, given that I only want to connect a single 4K monitor and 30Hz refresh is OK for me, can you tell me if there is any advantage to spending 2K more and getting a Mac Pro?
Cheers, Mike

Short answer: I have this exact configuration, and yes, the newest rMBP 15" w/Nvidia card will drive the UP3214Q over HDMI at 4k and 30Hz. It will drive it as a separate desktop with the laptop open, and it will drive it as the sole display -- either way works fine.
Longer answer: You should be aware of 2 things (that I wish I had been more aware of before purchasing the monitor)
1) If you are used to 60Hz or higher, the 30Hz limitation over HDMI is noticable, even in day-to-day productivity work. The mouse lag is very noticable and annoying to me.
2) Scaling/HiDPI support [the way the integrated retina display works] is virtually nonexistant at the resolution you'd want to run it at. What this means is that you either run the monitor at a lower resolution (and everything is blurry), or you run it at full resolution and everything (menu, dock, fonts, etc) is extremely small. You can use SwitchResX to enable scaling support at odd resolutions (for instance, I've successfully gotten HiDPI/scaling to run at 1920x1200 and 2048x1080, with black bars at the edges), but it's not an ideal resolution for this size monitor. I want to match the TB display resolution (2560x1440) in HiDPI mode, but I've been unable to get it working after hacking away at it for 2 days.
I'm hoping that Apple will fix these limitations. Multiple people have reported that MST over DP1.2 works on the same hardware if you boot into Windows, so the hardware support is there -- it just needs to be enabled in the drivers by Apple. Whether they actually will or not is anyone's guess. In the meantime I (and many others) are in limbo wondering if we should return these 4k displays, or keep them and hope "proper" support comes. Since it's not a specifically advertised capability, Apple isn't under any obligation, but I think there's more than a few people hoping that Apple does right by the users and enables the full functionality that the hardware supports.

  • MacBook Pro Retina Wont Connect back to Monitor

    Hey Everyone,
I have a MacBook Pro Retina Early 2013 15in that is running OS X Yosemite - 10.10.2 - Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
At Work for the past 1.5 years i have been connecting to a Dell Monitor via a DVI to HDMI Cable to use as my primary screen and have never had any issues. During the day I often present on the projector in the BoardRoom a Dell 4610X using a direct HDMI cable.
The issue: Ever since I have updated my laptop to Yosemite, every time i connect my macbook to my monitor after its been connected to the projector it will no longer connect. The monitor will recognize that there is something connected but it wont show anything. Even if i try another display in the office the same thing happens. The issue will always resolve if i restart the computer.
Recently I had an issue with the Logic Board and it was replaced by an Apple Certified repair shop. This issue was happening even before the logic board was replaced and it is still having the same issues now, so I don't believe its an hardware issue.
Although this issue is not critical, its a nuisance to re-start my laptop each time i get back to my desk after a meeting in the boardroom...
I would high appreciate some help on this!!
    Thanks in Advance

    Something else to check ..
Open System Preferences > Network then select the Wi-Fi tab.
Drag the school wi fi network name to the top of the list.
You can open System Preferrences by clicking the System Preferences icon in your Dock
Or click System Preferences from your Apple menu icon top left in your screen.
    Or, from your Applications folder.

  • MacBook Pro Retina 15 using DELL U2713H Issue

Hi, I just bought a DELL U2713H display. When I connect it to my Macbook Pro Retina 15 using 2560 * 1440 resolution, it displays like 1920 * 1080. Not clear extually, it is fuzzy. And when I scroll in Mac mail, it blinks.
    Here are what I got:
    1. I am using a mini display port to display port cable (from the monitor), to connect to the monitor. Mini-display port plug to laptop, display port plug to monitor.
    2. I set the U2713H display to 2560 * 1440 already.
    3. I set the monitor to enable display port 1.2 (If I disable it, it also not works).
    What I have tested:
    1. I bought an U2713HM before at home, it works fine with same setting on my macbook pro. Only the cable was bought from ebay (Also mini-display port to display port cable).
    2. I test the new U2713H on my windows laptops, it also works fine with same cable (from monitor).
    Please help!
    Thanks in advance!

  • New Macbook Pro Retina is pixelated on external monitor

I have recently bought a Macbook Pro Retina Display 13" and when I connect it to my external monitor (Samsung) with a HDMI cable the screen is blurry and pixelated. I have connected my old macbook to this monitor with no problems. I tried adjusting the settings etc and some other tips I found online but nothing has worked. Has anyone else had any luck rectifying this problem?
It's a massive pain as I the monitor is reasonably new and I need it in order to study comfortably.

I have an HP 2311x as well. I'm using an HDMI cable and am not having any issues getting the screen to display. I know you said the cable works with a PC but have you tried a different HDMI cable just in case. It might be worth a try. Other than that, I'm not much help.
The issue I had when plugging this monitor into my MBP retina was that the image was very blurry on the HP 2311x. I almost gave up on using it and was going to just buy a Thunderbolt display but after much research I found a custom firmware update that fixed the underscan/blurriness issue. So be prepared for that if you get the screen to display.
If I can find that resource, I will post it here.
    Good luck!

  • Macbook Pro Retina problem connecting to external monitor

    Hello Community,
I've been experiencing a problem, I bought a 13' Macbook Pro Retina. Not quite a cheap machine.
But when I connect through HDMI to my HP 23xi , the screen gets blurry and cut. I tried messing with the configurations, but it simply won't get better.
I presume it's because it is retina, of course. But I bought this monitor, a quite nice monitor a month ago, and I do not want to sell it nor throw it away.
    What should I do?
    My Kindest Regards,
    Luisvf7

    Hi luisvf7,
So it seems you are having issues with your MacBook Pro not displaying properly on your external display. It does sound like a frustrating situation. Let’s see if we can get you up and running.

  • 13" Macbook Pro Retina issue outputting to Asus monitor

So I'm trying to drive a Asus VS247H-P 23.6 inch monitor with my Macbook Pro Retina (13", late 2013). The MBPr has two Thunderbolt/MiniDisplay ports and one HDMI port. The monitor has one HDMI input. The monitor will work when using the Macbook’s HDMI port, but when I use a MiniDisplay to HDMI cable to try and drive it through the MiniDisplay port, the monitor can't detect any signal, and the Macbook screen goes black temporarily every few seconds as long as the cable is plugged in. I've tried with three different MiniDisplay/HDMI cables, all with the same result. There are no Mac drivers available for download on the Asus support website.
More confusingly, the monitor WILL work perfectly when run through the MiniDisplay port of a NON-retina 13" Macbook Pro with the same MiniDisplay to HDMI cable.
I would just use the HDMI-out port of the MBPr to drive the monitor, but I'd like to run two identical monitors through the two MiniDisplay ports for a dual screen setup.
I'm completely stumped at this point, if anyone has any idea at all on what's going on I would be eternally grateful!

    Hi mwc6zp,
I have come across exactly the same issue.  Same monitor, same laptop model and year, same everything.  The only way I can get it to work is by using the standard HDMI input to the laptop.
Were you ever able to work around this?

  • New MacBook Pro Retina with NEC 27 inch monitor

I've got a new MacBook Pro Retina and I'm trying to use it with my NEC 27 monitor. I connected the two via Apple DVI to Thunderbolt adaptor, but I can only get the monitor to operate at 1500 pixels with the MacBook Pro even though my monitor supports 2560x1440pixels. This is really frustrating since I purchase this lapto to use with my monitor. Any advice?  Thanks, Lucian

When going to the 2560x1440 ( or 1600) resolution you will need the dual-link DVI adapter (along with a dual link DVI cable, of course).   The single link will work...but at lower resolutions.

  • Macbook Pro retina + Samsung LED 24" external monitor

Hi all, I just bought Macbook Pro 13.3" Retina and im having some troubles.
When I connect those two via VGA adapter I see some strange artifact effect on external monitor.
I dont know hot to name that artifact but it is the same thing that you can see when you take your camera or smartphone and try to record old tv screen for example. You will see that parallel lines goes up or down. This effects is easy to notice when you put something with dark background on external monior (like Unity3D Pro IDE with dark skin in my case).
    The interesting things are:
    - when I switch external monitor from VGA adapter connection to HDMI-HDMI then everything works fine with no artifacts.
    - when I'm using VGA adapter and connect Macbook Pro to another external monitor (AOC 24" LCD) then everything works ok aswell.
    - when I take my Samsung LED monitor and connect it to another PC (Windows 8) with VGA everything works great.
So I belive that this issue is related to all three of them (MacbookPro + Sasmung LED + VGA adapter) and I really dont know who to blame and what to do.
Dose anyome have an idea how to solve this and what to do?]
    thanks

  • Macbook pro retina 13" 2 External DVI Monitors

    All,
Has anyone successfully used 2 External DVI monitors on a 13" retina Macbook Pro?  I would like to use both Thunderbolt ports if possible, one for each monitor with 2 mini-display/thunderbolt port to DVI adapter.

Remove Chrome (and Google Drive if you have it). Higher temps when using Netflix are normal, Silverlight (which Netflix uses) is a resource hog, get used to it or stop using Netflix.
Let's see what else you are running. Download a copy of Etrecheck and run it. Post the report here.

  • MacBook Pro Retina Mountain Lion + Dell U2713hm hangs after wake-up

This is a more specific description of my problems here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4385171
I use a Dell U2713hm together with a MacBookPro Retina under Mountain Lion. The Dell is connected via the Thunderboldt to DVI-D adapter that is sold by apple. The Dell has a USB 3 Hub. The upstream is connected to the Apple-DVI adapter. I use a mouse and a Logitech keyboard, which are connected to the Dell USB hub.
The display blanks from time to time for some seconds, which is suboptimal and I would be greateful if this could be fixed. But the biggest problem is that the system hangs after wake up. Sometimes the external monitor just stays dark, sometimes I get the login screen, but cannot type since the swapping wheel is shown. I have to reboot the machine.
To me this looks like a USB(3) sync problem.
If there are any ways around this I would be really glad. Is there a way to disable USB3? I also noticed that the speed of components that is displayed in the system profiler depends on the ports I use for keyboard, mouse and camera ...
    Thanks!

The solution is to dump the 100€ mini-display port DVI-D adapter that apple sells and buy a mini-Display to Display-Port cable for 6€. No crashes, no annoying interruption of the display (which I had several times the day for 2 or 3 seconds). There are very short interruptions now, but it is much better than with the apple adapter. The apple adapter needs a USB port, which is not necessary with the simple cable.
As for the monitor: Burn In, otherwise great. The burn in can be erased via monitor menu but should not be there in the first place.
    Hope this helps.

  • DELL 2713 USB hub Issue on MacBook Pro Retina 15

    Hello,
I have a new MacBook pro retina 15" and Dell 2713 monitor.
the Dell works fine with the MacBook with supplied DP cable.
BUT the USB hub doesn't work, the monitor is connected to the computer with original dell usb 3.0 cable.
Note: on PC & win7, it works fine
How can I find a proper drivers for this built-in USB 3.0 hub.
    thanks,
    Tomer

The Retina models are full of flaws. You have found one of them. For some reason the discrete graphic card is being shut off in Windows and you are now using the built in Intel HD Graphics 4000. Why I have no idea.

  • Macbook pro retina external monitor mouse skipping, lag problem

When I plug my macbook pro retina (Lion) into a 24" monitor through the DVI adaptor, the cursor jumps erratically every ~10 seconds when being moved. Feels like a lag and is worse with more programs running. Does not depend on mouse or mouse surface. Trackpad does it too. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    Hi AO1 James,
If I understand correctly, the external monitor was blurry from the moment you plugged it into your MacBook Pro with Retina display. I would first check the resolution settings for the monitor with the "How do I select additional resolutions on my display?" section of the following article:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
If it remains blurry after selecting your monitors optimal resolution, I would use the steps under the "Reset the system" section of the article to help troubleshoot the issue.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,

  • Macbook Pro Retina 15", Mid 2012 - High Speed HDMI Cable

I got  a High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet that supports up to 4096 x 2160 pixels. I conncted  my macbook pro retina 15" to a 27" monitor that supports a resolution of 2560 x 1440 via this cable, but the maximum resolution it's 1080p.

I am a web - front end developer and I have a windows machine and I need to switch betweed the 2 for testing.

  • Can't connect Macbook Pro Retina to Dell P2715q 4k Monitor

I received a new Dell 4k P2715q monitor on Friday.  It came with a mini DP to DP cable which I immediately hooked into the Thunderbolt port on my 15-inch, Mid 2012 Macbook Pro Retina.  It worked beautifully on Friday all through the day.  Was very happy with my purchase.
Took the laptop home over the weekend and brought it back today.... plugged into my thunderbolt port again and nothing.... Go HDMI to the monitor's HDMI and it works but only up to 1080p in 30hz which is no good.  So the monitor still seems to be working but the Macbook won't recognize the monitor through the Thunderbolt (mini DP) port.
Any thoughts?  Talked to Dell support which was worthless except to verify that the monitor didn't get fried over the weekend and also talked to Apple who suspected that it was maybe the mini DP cord that Dell sent with the monitor.  I can't believe that a cable went faulty over a weekend when no one else was in my office.....
    Thoughts?  Thanks ahead of time!
