Macbook Pro Retina 15" what's a normal temperature to touch supposed to be ?

I've spent about 8 days setting up my new MBPr with all my music and video production apps. Just starting to do professional workhorse tasks for hours in a row plugged into wall not on batteries. I love the performance and the extendend desktop on a 24" monitor. Smooth sailing brilliant speed and graphics retina display, HOWEVER... It's so hot to touch along the chassi just under the 15" screen that you would want to call it abnormally HOT !. I downloaded Temperature monitor to see what's going on under the hood and I was amazed at the readings from all the different sensors. See below. Is this cause for alarm and a return for exchange ? Also I'm still not sure what to make of the battery life after 10.8.1 update sofar after a few days I'm not that impressed.

Thanks, this is my first laptop been using Apple desktop computers for music producion since 1988 (mac plus). I have just replaced my 2006 G5 ppc quad 2.5 with this MBPr and intend on using it daily for serious pro applications like audio and video production, it's a huge upgrade and I'm enjoying the performance boost and life after 10.5.8 Cheers to Steve Jobs for making personal computers that serve artists so well for all these years !

Thanks for the suggestion, the next step was to call Apple, who gave me a claim number, which I discovered you must have to get anything done with them.  They refered me to a Apple store or repair center, after some reseach took it to the Computer Store in Mobile, Alabama and they were excellent.  They took pictures of the screen with bug submitted it to Apple who denied the claim but they kept kicking it up to the next level and finally Apple agreed to sent new cover.  The Computer Store had the cover the next day, they changed it out and now I am bug free.  If your in the area of Mobile Alabama you can feel good about getting help from the Computer Store.  For the two folks that responded to my note, Thank You, good comments and good advice.

  • TS5296 MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013): Keyboard and Multi-Touch trackpad unresponsive

Brand new Macbook PRO Retina 15inch. (1 day old) Running 10.9
    EFI 1.2 installed.
Keyboard/trackpad hangs when using the left USB.
The EFI update 1.3 apparently fixes this issue for the 13inch macbook pro.
I have a 15inch macbook pro. The EFI update 1.2 does not resolve this issue for me.
Whenever I plug something into the left USB, after the 2nd or 3rd time, the keyboard and trackpad become unresponsive. To get the keyboard/trackpad back again, I must restart the machine.
This is what the consol says:
    Nov 12 11:29:56 leaf kernel[0]: AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::_deviceSetReport - DeviceRequest returned error 0xe000404f (interface 1, reportID 0xac, payload 2
Nov 12 11:29:56 leaf kernel[0]: AppleUSBMultitouchDebug: _deviceSetReport returned an error in configureDataMode
    Nov 12 11:29:56 leaf kernel[0]: AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::_deviceSetReport - DeviceRequest for reportID 0xac returned with result 0xe000404f - retrying
I cannot install the EFI update 1.3 as I get an alert "This software is not supported on your system." I assume because it was made only for the 13inch.
Is this a hardware or firmware issue? If it's only firmware, why does this issue only affect some users? If it's hardware, should I just return this macbook?

I can reproduce the behavior at will. I just have to plug in the tablet on the left USB board, reboot the tablet, disconnect the cable and reconnect. At that moment the trackpad and keyboard will both freeze.
This is the complete sequence of console logs I have

Disconnecting the tablet doesn't resolve the issue. A reboot does. I still have to try if the workaround posted by Apple for the MBP-13 Late 2013 (close the lid and reopen after a few minutes) would work here too.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 15 has a creaking noise even without touching it

These days I found that my macbook pro retina Early 2013 Model has a creaking noise when the CPU and GPU's temperature is going up to 50 degree Celsius, which should be normal temperature when you only run the machine for web browsing and video watching.
And I got this creaking noise sudden without my hand put on anywhere close to the machine, it came out itself. And I have checked that:
    1. it is not the sound from the spring on the main board.
    2. it is not from the buttom because I tried to removed the buttom and use the machine the noise still there
    3. it is from all over the keyboard, most close to the screen.
I am doubting that it is because metal moving while heated.
And I made a video to record it then show it to "Genius" in apple store. But they claimed that they couldn't hear anything, since me and my friend have all comfirmed that it is exsisted!
Watch the video at max volum and at around 3 SECOND and 35 SECOND, there comes the noise.
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/o7kqww05d1e2avv/03__35.MOV
See if any one got the same issue.
Thank you and wish you don't suffer from this.

Believe it or not, Flash REALLY isn't the issue.
It's hardware makers making devices with less processor performance and requiring software makers to fit into a certain requirements of such. Namely iPhone, iPods and iPads.
Flash is designed to give a lot of features and work across many operating systems, browsers and platforms as a write once solution.
Flash has a certain level of processor performance requirement, which hardware makers like Apple want to build less powerful machines using less expensive processors.
Apple has removed Coverflow 3D effects from iTunes and discontinued the 17" MacBook Pro, leaving only the 15" as having a more powerful 3D capable graphics capability.
So Apple is obviously on a anti-heat/performance quest as they further thin up their hardware, trying to kill Flash by punishing Mac users who want to run it.
Flash runs without a fan sound on my older Mac with dedicated GPU and older OS X verison, no sweat.
Head to your System Preferences > Energy Saver and if you have it, uncheck Automatic Graphics switching, this will use the dedicated GPU and shorted battery life, but if your on power should reduce the heat and fan noise.
Another option is to use SMC fan control and set the fan default speed slightly faster, this will keep the machine slightly cooler and not trigger the higher fan speed as often.
If your running 10.8, you will need to System Preferences > Security > downloads to "Anywhere"
SMC FanControl is over at MacUpdate.com.

  • Macbook Pro Retina Late 2013 96C temp -- normal??

I've had my MBP-retina for about 3 months and I've notices some heat problems to the point where it's really hot to touch above the top keys, in fact right now it could burn my finger if i held it there. It says the temp is 96C. The fans were not going above 2000 rpm so I downloaded an app and I boosted up the fans to 4300 rpm and now it's at 71C.  I'm not really doing anything but using google chrome and working in Adobe Illustrator.
    So,
    A)  What temperature should the fans come on at?
    B)  Is this normal? Should I be worried
    Thanks,
    L

So I just got back from the apple store and wow, what rude service. The guy basically shrugged when I told him "Well, I guess Im stuck with it huh?" after he told me there was no way I could get a refund. He performed a test and told me everything was fine and told me in a very arrogant manner that the test isn't showing the results I told them about as if I was lying....***? He said they can send it away for a few weeks but I don't have any other computer and I just bought this one for school so I can't afford to have it gone for that long. He told me "doesn't your school have a computer lab"? Seriously, how can someone at Apple be this rude? I told him they do but its closed at 7 and I dont live on campus. How could a computer lab replace a personal computer? He basically kept shrugging rudely anytime I tried to find a solution. He didn't even reply with a single word. When I told him I called the call center and they told me that yes it is much too hot and to take it to the store after doing a fix he just chuckled and rolled his eyes. Really?  I spent 1500 dollars on this computer to not even be able to do basic things on it without it overheating and the service is this bad? Well, looks like I won't ever be buying an apple product again even though before this experience I was a huge fan of all their products. I know one customer doesnt make a difference to them but come on...looks like I'm stuck with it and apple couldnt give one care. If having your hands uncomfortably hot after a small amount of time is acceptable then it looks like I'll never be buying another laptop from them. Its a shame I really liked it at first.

  • Logic X on Macbook Pro Retina... "feeling hot, hot"?

I recently made an impulse purchase on a Macbook Pro Retina 2.7Ghz Quad core i7, in order to ease my transition to Logic X & Pro Tools 11. I figured with a Flash drive & 16Gb of memory that this would be a nice quiet machine... but unfortunately no. I'm quite shocked at how HOT these i7 processors run - in idle mode, the machine ticks over at 41c (istat menus), but as soon as you load a blank project in Logic X & press play, the machine ramps up to 92-93c. Consequently the fans kick in to an annoying level... & don't subside until you quit Logic. The Macbook has even touched 100c - which seems pretty hot, considering thermal shutdown is 110c. (I'm following all the guidelines on keeping the machine well ventilated, & only running it with the power supply).
I've read many similar posts in other parts of the apple forum, but I'm interested in anybody else's experiences with Logic X on a Macbook Pro Retina. Is this behaviour normal, or do I have a lemon?!! Benchmarks are impressive for the machine : 64 tracks vs 30 on my 2006 Mac Pro (Quad 3.0ghz/10.6.8/Logic 9.1.8). http://www.evan.se/logicprobenchmark/Logic_Multicore_Benchmark_Test.html
Another word of warning on Thunderbolt... it's very expensive, & you'll need it for practically everything. Once you've added a hub, cables & all the various adapters you'll need (firewire, ethernet, DVI, etc), your looking at the best part of £375/$600.... & that's not even including a thunderbolt 7200 rpm Hard Drive (£250 minimum). Sadly there's very few thunderbolt devices (apart from high end Raid HD's) that have more than one port, so daisy-chaining is not an option, & a hub is essential. Worse still, the current maximum length for thunderbolt is 3m which makes it very difficult to place a noisy mac or hard drive in another room. The new Mac Pro may be the quietest computer on the planet, but what's the point if you can't get hard drives out of earshot? (There are apparently fibre-optic versions in the pipeline that will exceed these lengths, but when?)
So folks... opinions - is your Macbook Pro Retina whisper quiet with Logic? Mine might have to go back...

    Hi Mate,
I've got a non-retina MBP i5, and it's not behaving like that, so no way should yours be.  Can't hear it at all until it really comes under load.  But even then it's relatively quiet.  Quite concerning that it's happening to you with nothing loaded up.
Something is obviously taking up cpu power just by having the audio engine running, have you checked OSX Activity monitor and checked where your processor(s) are being used?
Also, check your audio options and make sure the audio buffer isn't set ridiculously low.
Agree that Apple expansion options are expansive - However, at least they're working on getting the software reduced, Logic X being an example of that.

  • Noise from MacBook Pro Retina 13 late 2013

    Hi,
I wonder if noise from my MacBook Pro Retina 13 late 2013 is normal. I can hear it only in quiet room (first time I heard it in the middle of the night).  It’s very quiet noise. I don't know what to compare this noise. For me it’s sounds like clicking the spring. I can hear it when scrolling the webpage by trackpad, start mission control by gesture (or F3 key), changing the full screen apps by gesture or when minimize Safari or other apps. I think it depends on the graphic system work. It’s a little lauder when I use 1680x1050 scaled resolution than use 'best for display' resolution. I think the noise occurs when graphic system do some operation. Is it possible?
Today I was in Authorized Service Provider but technician heard nothing. There I can't hear this noise too, because this noise is very quiet and there is not total silence. Diagnostic tools show that everything is ok. But I still hear it in total quiet room. I tried to record this noise by iPhone but it can't do that.
Can you do me a favor and check this on your MacBook? Sit in totally quiet room, please. Set the scaled resolution 1680x1050 then bring ear closer to the keyboard and scroll a webpage (which have a lot of graphics) by gesture on the trackpad, start mission control or open notification center. Can you hear then any noise? Please listen carefully, because this is very quiet noise.
I’ll be very gratefully for your help. I wonder if only my MacBook making this noises or all MacBook Retina late 2013 making this.
    Regards,
    Mateusz

    Hi Mateusz,
I have the same issue on my new MBP retina 13 late 2013. It's not disturbing because I can hear it in only very quiet room and only if the content of the screen is changing (like scrolling web pages). It reminds me the sound of old 3'5'' hard discs. I first thought it's a hdd, but then realised my mac has only SSD.
I think it's a noise from the voltage regulators. This is normal for very high speed high-voltage signals.
But any way, MBP 13 late 2013 is the best laptop I ever saw
It's just silent and cool like an ipad. I wonder if it has a rotating cooler at all.
    Jon Bo
Thank you Jon Bo for your response. I agree with you. This noise is something like electronic noise, and it is related to the graphics card.
The rMBP 13 late 2013 works without any noise other then situations I’ve described above. The noise is so quiet that I can't hear it when e.g. external HDD working in the same room.

    Hello bloomaround,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
From what I gather, Safari stops responding when viewing a specific webpage on your MacBook Pro. Take a look at the article linked below which provides troubleshooting suggestions that’ll resolve most issues with Safari on a Mac.

  • Keyboard and Multi-Touch trackpad may become unresponsive on MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)

    Folks,
I have exacly same sympton described here on my 5 day old 15 inc macbook pro.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5296
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013): Keyboard and Multi-Touch trackpad may become unresponsive
Has anone tried to apply this patch on 15 inc ?
    Kind Regards,
    Neroshige

The patch is only for MBP late 2013 13 inch. 15 inch is not able to install this patch
    I'm facing this problem intermittently.
When my keyboard & trackpad went unresponsive, I plug in my USB keyboard and the keyboard & trackpad went back normal.
I search the web and somebody highlight it may due to connector to keyboard/trackpad appear to be curled.
Not sure is hardware problem or software bug...

Just bought it a a month ago, and it's really anoying me!

Take it back in and gently but firmly try to persuade a senior supervisor to authorize a replacement. Had it been stuck on black, would have been easier on the persuasion, but you may get lucky.

  • Can I bring files from a NTFS formatted external hard drive (from Windows XP 32 bit desktop) to my new macbook pro retina?

Can I bring files from a NTFS formatted external hard drive (from Windows XP 32 bit desktop) to my new macbook pro retina?

What are these files you are trying to copy over?
If they are program specific and there is no program on a Mac to read them then you'll have to find either a Mac version of that program or one that does the same thing and can read those files.
The file extension should not change just because you connect a NTFS formatted drive to a Mac computer. A Word Document is still a .doc/.docx ad the same for all other office type programs. Music files with an extension of .MP3, or whatever, should read the same on both system. Same goes for all other files like images with a .JPG extension.
    Yes I would network them.
I would not use Migration Assistant. There is nothing on your Windows PC that can be used on the Mac other than your personal data files. No programs or settings can be carried over from Windows to OS X.

Also, when I view the files from the external hard drive, they show up as .nbz and are not recognized by any program on the Mac. Should I just abandon the hard drive option and start sharing files through the LAN approach?

  • When I turn on or restart my Macbook Pro Retina 15", my entire screen flashes completely bright yellow for a few seconds and then it goes to the normal Welcome screen.  How do I fix this??

    Hi Everyone,
This problem just started today.  When I turn on or restart my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (Mid 2012 version), my screen is light gray like normal, and then after a few seconds my entire screen flashes completely bright yellow for a few seconds, and then it goes to the normal Welcome screen (where I choose to login as myself or a guest user).  This suddenly started today and has not stopped since.  This keeps happening every single time I turn on or restart my computer.
Yesterday I installed all the Mavericks and other updates that were available in the App Store, so I'm wondering if this is related to that since this never happened prior to my doing those updates yesterday.  When I first installed the new OS X Mavericks (10.9.3) update, it went through the whole installation process (took about 10 minutes), and then during the installation I got an error message saying that it couldn't verify my iTunes application that was on my laptop, and then my laptop finished installing the updates.  Then once my laptop restarted, the App Store "Updates" section said that I had to do the whole OS X Mavericks (10.9.3) and iTunes (Version 11.2) updates all over again.  So my laptop did the whole installation again (took about 10 minutes, but this time I didn't get that "iTunes error message" during the installation process).
Now, when I go to the App Store "Updates" section, it says the following under "Updates Installed in the Last 30 days":
-Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update (Version 5.05) installed May 15, 2014
    -OS X Update (Version 10.9.3) installed May 15, 2014
    -iTunes (Version 11.2) installed May 15, 2014
    -OS X Update (Version 10.9.3) installed May 15, 2014
    -iTunes (Version 11.2) installed May 15, 2014
    -Security Update 2014-002 (Version 1.0) installed April 22, 2014
I'm wondering if this flashing bright yellow screen upon bootup is related to the fact that my laptop installed the OS X Update and the iTunes Update two times each?  Or is this new problem totally unrelated?  It's just that this problem started a day after these 2 updates were installed twice.
My Macbook Pro Retina 15" (Mid 2012 version) is otherwise working fine at least as of now.  The only issue so far is this flashing bright yellow screen every time I turn on or restart my computer.
If anyone could please help me fix this so that my bootup screen doesn't flash completely bright yellow anymore, I would be forever grateful!
Thank you so much for reading this and for any help you can provide.
    hope everyone is well,
    Elaine

    Hey everyone in Apple world!
I figured out how to fix the flashing yellow screen problem that I've been having on my MBP!  Yessssss!!!
I found this super handy website with the golden answer: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
I followed the instructions on this page and here's what I did:
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
I went through the 6 steps above twice, just to make sure I got rid of whatever stuff was holding up my bootup process.  Since I did that, my MBP boots up just like normal.  No flashing yellow screen anymore!!
(Note that I arrived at this solution when I first saw this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570?viewlocale=en_US)
Let me know if this works for you!

  • What is the problem on MacBook Pro retina 15"?

I just bought a new MacBook Pro retina 15". After unboxing, I turned it on and there was no any problem. But the second time I turned it on and charge battery, I got 2 problems, 1. The machine made noise loudly and 2. The charging is not working. What is the problem on MacBook Pro retina 15"? However, after about 1 hour, it works normally. Should I still use it or sell it before it has more issues?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 15 Keyboard caps feel loose, normal?

    Hi,
I have just had my top case replaced ohm y macbook pro retina 15 (late 2013) due to a trackpad problem and now it feels as if all of the keys on the replacementt keyboard are slightly loose and rattley and make quite a lot of noise when i type is this normal as i have got a 2010 macbook pro 13 which the keyboard feels sturdy on, not sure if this is just because it is thinner or if it is faulty is this normal?

yeh I would do but it is over a hour away and iti s costing me a lot to keep going out, it has been in repair 4 times and i have only had it for 2 months and hardly used it.. was just wandering what everyone else's keyboards were like?
    Thanks

  • Macbook Pro Retina  Late 2013 CPU temperature issues while gaming (99 celsius) Is this normal ?

Hello everyone, this is my first time here. I recently purchased a macbook pro retina late 2013 notebook just over a month ago. It seems to be working just fine. I've installed bootcamp and installed windows 7. I use Speccy for my temperature monitor. I've played DayZ Standalone as well as L4D2. I noticed while playing both games on their lowest settings the CPU temperature consistently stays in the 90 degree celsius range often reaching 99 degrees celsius. I am fairly tech saavy and have a decent knowledge of computers.I bought the ThermaPak Heatshift pad in hopes of cooling it down but to no avail as it only does a great job at cooling everything else. This is my first laptop so I treat it like my baby ! haha I was wondering if these temp readings are normal because I know that even reaching 70 celsius can be somewhat damaging. Thank you for your assistance.
    EDIT:
I've attached a screenshot of the temperature for proof
