MacBook Pro Retina 2012 sudden reboots

I have a little problem with my MacBook now (Retina Mid 2012 15"). It sometimes, completely randomly, reboots, that is it stops responding, while looping the audio of about last second and then reboots. It runs on the latest version of OS X Yosemite.
The weird thing is it does not display anything like "Your computer had to restart because of a problem" and the logs do not contain a single clue of what could have caused this problem. It also does not contain any panic logs or anything. Previously it would only happen once a week, now it happen two days in a row. I tried resetting the SMC and the PRAM, but it still continues crashing.

Hello....
a couple hours ago Ive read an article, which was written, that the Macbook Pro Retina from mid 2012 till end of 2014 have a hardware problem concerning ur behavior of ur macbook. Sudden reboots, stop to responding,  unable to play videos correctly and symptoms of seeing of blurry pics. Resolution of these problems require to contact apple at the applestore and make an arrangement with them to repair that hardware problem. Of course as a gesture of good will from apple. Im using a macbook pro retina mid 2012 have not these symptoms but at my next stop near an applestore i gonna check the macbook just in case.
Think that is exactly what happened to u and apple gonna fix this.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 2012 shuts down when selecting Recovery HD !!

    Hello guys,
I tried to reboot my macbook pro retina 2012 and I held down "Option" key while my macbook was restarting but it won't be able to access into the Disc Utility Menu.
So I really need help to get my macbook format the hard drive, reinstall OS 10.x.x ( any suggestion?). Thank you for reading my post and I look forward a good answer.

Restart the computer and hold down the COMMAND and R keys to boot from the Recovery HD. If that does not work, then you either have a defective Recovery HD or a failing hard drive.
What you can do is this:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

  • Connecting 4k monitor to Macbook Pro retina 2012 mid

I tried to connect to Macbook Pro retina 2012 mid 15 inch 2.7GHZ model. Initially I connected using HDMI to 3840x2160 at 30 hz. I casually changed the resolution to 1080 p from scaled option. Now I no more get the option of scaling to 4k. I am unsure what is the issue over it. When I log into my windows. I am able to log in with my original 4k resolution in 30 HZ. Any guidance would be really great.
    2) I read a few forums regarding 4k with 60hz external monitor connection for macbook pro retina 2012 mid. But I couldn't get a clear solution whether it is possible or not. Would be great if someone can show lights on this too.

1- does Apple ever do exchanges for newly released products?  I bought my MacBook in jan they came out with new in mar.
If you purchased the product from Apple, not a third party, you have 14 days from the date of purchase to return it for a refund or exchange.  You are well past that.
2- if and when Apple comes out with a 4k or 5k thunderbolt display, will it be backwards compatible with my MacBook sich that I can't get the resolutions and 60mhz?
I do not have an answer to that and the Terms of Use for these forums discourages from speculating what Apple may or may not do in the future.  Having said that, from a practical business standpoint, backwards compatibility would be a sensible approach.  It has been done so in many areas in the past.
    Ciao.

  • Mountain Lion FREE update for MacBook Pro Retina 2012

Hello, looking for an honest support.. I bought my Macbook Pro Retina 2012 on this 15 July 2012 from Apple's authorised premium reseller of Bangladesh (Executive Machines Ltd.).. I just knew & saw yesterday that Mountain Lion was published & it is FREE for the buyers who bought the new qualifying machine (as my one is!).. so I just followed the apple.com eligible link and provided my details (address of my current residence which happens to be "Bangladesh", country, city & my valid macbook pro "serial number"..).. after that received a claim reference number mentioning that the FREE redeem code will be emailed to me after checking my claim has been validated.. but after carefully going through that eligibility link I noticed that claims are not eligible for outside US/ Canada.. and now I've provided my serial number & it has been used! and moreover, I did not recieve any email notification from Apple even after 24+ hours!.. what should I do now? .. do I need to buy this Mountain Lion once again even after I am eligible for the FREE update as Apple mentioned before or I just lost my free redeem opportunity as I bought it from outside US (event though from Apple's authorised reseller!!)?? please need honest suggestion..

can i make a dmg file right after download? its really really long when using recovery and my ml from the regular macbook pro is not compatible with the retina and im not sure why it works well with other macs except for this one.  thanks so much. having a headache now on how to make it work.
As you can only get OS X from Internet Recovery, you can't get the OS X Mountain Lion stored on the HDD and make a bootable volume with it. Also, you can't install the OS X version you have on your other Mac because the hardware of this MacBook Pro with Retina display isn't compatible with that OS X version.
In your case, reinstall OS X and see what happens. If you can't reinstall OS X, take the computer to an Apple Store because you can't do anything with that MacBook Pro now

  • My Macbook Pro Retina 2012 is running very slow and gives me frequent speed problems.

So, I've noticed it happen gradually for about a year now. It started with just minor but not significant delays in opening up programs, but I didn't mind it because the computer was still fast compared to a PC, which is what I used to use before this Macbook. I got this macbook in 2012, and luckily I still have a warranty, but it'll close soon.
    Right now, some problems include:
    1)
    2) Shutting down and turning on the computer is slow (sorry no picture on this one). When I first bought this mac, and until about a year ago, whenever I turn it on/off it would do it instantly. But now, there is a bit of a delay when turning off. The screen seems to just freeze at a certain frame, stays that way for a few seconds (longer when turning it off right after playing a game or two-- don't worry they're compatible with Mac OS), and then shuts off. And when it's frozen at that frame time, you can still see the background materials because they're only faded away. You know what I'm talking about-- Macbook turns out when turning off and then shuts down. So, much of the screen is white, but you can still see the screen prior to the shut down faded.
    3) Internet is running extremely slow. When I check my speed at speedtest.net, I get around 47 mbps on bad days and 53-ish on good days (download speed)

Resetting computer to factory conditions doesn't work, time-machine didn't work, and clearing more storage space didn't work either. I would like to get this problem fixed before my warranty runs out. Thanks for reading and any sort of help will be appreciated!

Do you know of any specific tasks or situations that cause it to perform poorly? If so, make a note of those and demonstrate them for Apple. Do NOT, under any circumstances, restart the machine. You want it at its worst when you take it in. If you try to do any of those magic resets, it may just reset things just long enough for Apple to proclaim it healthy. If Apple does that anyway, then there are plenty of opportunities to try those things later after your warranty has expired.
I wish I knew exactly when it does this, but it doesn't always happen. It sometimes does, and sometimes doesn't. I thought about this, too. But the problem is that it's really hard to catch a time or figure out what causes these symptoms to occur. I haven't taken it to Apple because I thought it'll just be a waste of time because they'll probably say that it's healthy so they don't have to put any money/effort to try and fix it...

  • My screen flickers in Safari MacBook Pro Retina 2012

My screen flickers in a totally random fashion and only in Safari when I am on the internet. It happens more or less on certain web pages and not very often, but it is very annoying when it does happen. My machine is a Macbook Pro Retina 15" late 2012 release. I have seen other posts on this issue dating back to 2012, however, there were not solutions submitted leaving me to believe that there is no solution or I may have missed it. People with the same problem say they have taken in their laptops to have them replaced by Apple only to find out their problem still exists, leading many to believe it's likely to be a software issue. Anyone have any ideas or answers to this issue?

    Hey dhaynes3818,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing issues with Safari on your MacBook Pro. To troubleshoot these issues, lets follow the steps in this article:

  • Macbook Pro retina (2012) randomly shuts down, won't wake

My Macbook Pro retina display mid 2012 with OS 10.9 has been acting more and more erratically.
When I close it to sleep, it often won't wake.  Space bar does nothing.  Sometimes after a minute the power button will wake it.  Other times one has to push the power button for over thirty seconds and then it will restart.  Also when leaving it to back up to a time capsule overnight it often will try to shut itself down.  I checked the power saver and automatic shut down panels and those are not set to do that.
Any ideas or do I have to take it to the genius bar?

Yes, especially if you are still under warranty or have AC.  Let Apple deal w/it.

  • Opening and cleaning a Macbook Pro (retina 2012)

I have had my MacBook Pro retina for more than 2 years, without cleaning the insides yet
I have used it extensively, many hours every day, and there has been periods of daily smoking
Should I just order a screwdriver set (pentalobe?), open it and clean the fans etc.?
I assume warranty is already expired.
But will opening and cleaning it be complicated or risky business? I'm good with electronics, but Apple uses small and delicate screws/parts etc.
Should I use a swab, compressed air container, or will a vacuum cleaner do? (metal/plastic head; static electricity)

    Mow.gli wrote:

I would.  I open up my MBPs without fear.  I suggest that you place it on a large surface with a clean towel underneath.  That way you can slide it around without damage and when you drop a screw, it will tend NOT to bounce away.
I assume warranty is already expired.
Yes, unless you purchased Apple care which extends it to three years.

I do not consider it risky if you use patience and a little common sense.  You may also need a #00 Phillips driver and possibly a Torx driver.  Check the iFixit.com web site for disassembly instructions for you model and appropriate tools.  That way you will have an idea what to expect.  Swabs with a non-residue electronics cleaner and compressed air are good ideas.  A vacuum cleaner should be used very judiciously.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 15'/Sudden drop in graphics perfomance

Hi, I purchased the base model of the Macbook Pro Retina 15' display 2 weeks ago and recently installed Windows 7 via bootcamp just so I could play a couple of games which were not supported on OS X. Everything was going well until 3 days ago when I turned my mac on, logged into windows, booted up Bordelands 2 and noticed a massive drop in frame rates causing the game to be very laggy. At first I thought it was a problem with the game but then I had the same problem with Skyrim. I then reinstalled Windows 7 and the problem persisted. So I did a CineBench test on OS X Mountain Lion and got 14.7 fps on the OpenGL test which is more than half of what other people get with the same model Macbook Pro. So now I'm stuck on how to fix this, I'm not sure whether this is a software or a hardware problem and if there might be a quick fix that I can do or if I have to take it to an apple store to have it replaced. I would appreciate any help, thanks.

Thanks for this... you just made my day with this one line. Tried to figure out for days what went wrong with skyrim or the macbook pro, but a simple SMC reset helped.
For the record - since I had to google this SMC reset myself too - here is how I done it on the retina MBP:
    1. Shutdown the laptop.
    2. Make sure that the MagSafe power adapter connected.
    3. Press (left) SHIFT+CONTROL+OPTION+POWER buttons once (at the same time) ...no need to hold them.
    4. Press POWER button to turn your MBP on again.
Simple as that and worked like a charm for me.
    Big up for Ardalaan.

  • Macbook pro mid 2012 suddenly very slow

I've had my Macbook Pro 13" (not retina) mid 2012 8 GB RAM for over two years and all of sudden it went from running as fast and smoothly as Usain Bolt to running about as fast as I do, which is extremely slow. Every time I try to do something on my mac (whether it be opening a program, starting up my mac, or just clicking on something), the spinning color wheel pops up and takes about 90 seconds to actually complete the action that I tried to do. Sometimes it just quits whatever program it may be running immediately. I already reset the SMC (that didn't work) and I really, really, REALLY don't want to have to take it to an Apple store. I'm currently running EtreCheck as I type this, but even that is moving extremely slow. I know it's not Yosemite because I've had it for about a month now and nothing has gone wrong until a couple days ago. I am a student in high school and therefore desperately need my mac's speed back. Did I mention it took 15 minutes just to write this post from my computer? Somebody help.

    Finally the EtreCheck finished:
    Problem description:
Color wheel keeps popping up every time I try to do something on my computer, whether it be open a program, click a link, type a paper… pretty much every time I try to do something. As a student, it’s impossible for me to take notes or type papers. Overall, the computer has suddenly become extremely slow as well during start ups.

  • Macbook Pro Retina Crashes and reboots to black screen

My Macbook Pro (10,1) crashes at semi-random times and immediately reboots, but with a black screen. Everything on the Mac seems to be running fine, I can activate VoiceOver and reboot using keyboard shortcuts. It then boots normally, sometimes displaying this dialog. It happens both in Mac OS X and Windows. It has happend with only Safari open, but it always happens when starting a game of Civilization V in Windows or starting a Netflix video in Safari or Chrome in OS X.
After resetting the SMC and NVRAM nothing seemed to change, except sometimes instead of rebooting with a black screen it reboots into this.
    System Information:
    Mac OS X 10.8.4 Build 12E55
    Boot ROM Version:          MBP101.00EE.B02
    SMC Version (system):          2.3f35
Has anybody else experienced this or have any idea how to fix it?

  • Macbook pro retina display sudden shutdown

So I've been using my new macbook pro with retina display for about a week now, and its shutdown several times on its own.  The computer just goes black, and then turns on with a grey screen that says it had to shutdown and is restarting.  Anyone else had this happen?

Unfortunately, the Retina is simply full of bugs.  There was very little testing of this unit, and only a handful of apps (mostly Apple) were ready for this most amazing display.  Apple was caught up (again) in it's own world of secrecy and marketing, therefore WE the users end up doing their testing for them.  I'm sure Apple Engineering was furious they couldn't even QA the best laptop design to ever hit the planet.
There are dozens of posts now surfacing on the web regarding HI issues (Human Interface) and video drivers.  It'll be months before 3rd parties are ready, and that's only if they were lucky enough to receive an eval unit.  It'll be just as long for Apple to fix the Retina's internal problems like chip updates and drivers. In the meantime, expect app cores, kernel panics, crashes and overall unusability and a general un-trustworthiness.
Your choice, like everyone else having issues, is to wait it out and hope there's no serious hardware changes needed for fixes, or just return it and wait for everyone else to plow through the issues.  Of course if you do that, you won't have [partial] use of the best laptop ever - until it's fixed.
In any event, Apple held shipping of further units for at least 6 weeks to deal with this mess, so maybe the 2cd round will be a little more stable. Remember, some people aren't having any problems at all.  Some will.  Some have.

  • Battery issue LoadCycle count increases without charging , MacBook Pro Retina 2012?

    Hi
i have the feeling that i have a battery issue.
It looks like that  the battery cells are in one region defekt.
Once i cross about 30% last charge it starts draining very fast within 10-15 Minutes the MacBook switches off.
In order to proove this i have written a small script in order monitor the battery and some other counters.
And here is realized anothe interesting topic.
The Load Cycle Count can increase even if you dont charge !!
Below you see that the LoadCycle Count increased from 373 to 374 even if i didnt charge.
Any ideas on that. Or does anyone have the same issue ?

    tesme33,
have you tried resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller, to see if that affects its energy consumption?
    When I run
    ioreg -n AppleSmartBattery -r | grep -i CycleCount
on my MacBook Pro, I get two different output lines. You might want to adjust that part of the CYCLECOUNT assignment to have
    ioreg -n AppleSmartBattery -r | grep '"CycleCount"'
instead, to ensure that that returns only the intended single line.

  • Less than 3 hours WiFi capacity on MacBook Pro Retina 2012 acceptable?

    Hi there,
I have my Macbook with 15inch-Retina display since it came out (ordered it the day after it was released) and I am not really satisfied with my battery capacity. According to MagicanPaster (app for system monitoring) I have had 56 charge cycles and the health of the battery is displayed as 97-99% (fluctuating based on load). I am using Lion MacOSX which had those battery problems, but seemed to have them resolved or at least alleviated the problem since some patch a while ago and always keep it up to date as soon as patches are released over the app store. Currently the estimate for battery life is at 50% projecting 1 hour and 22 minutes and I have a CPU load of 12%, WiFi on, Display at 75% brightness, Surfing Safari (no Flashvideo).
So, after all having used this thing for almost half a year I think of returning it to support service because having 3 hours of usual run-time on a battery is really not any different than what I remember from my previous Acer/Dell machines etc. I vaguely remember that back in the years people were proud to tell me that their Mac would last for almost a working day. So really is that all Apple is able to perform?
I remember it was better when I got it, lasting around at least 5 hours until that Lion Update came. Anyone else having similar experience? What about the chances of getting this as manufacturing malfunction under the Apple Protection Plan?
    Best,
    Citizen

I havent had this problem, but I dont have retina display on my 15 inch MBP. I bought mine right after Mountian Lion was released and didnt do the free upgrade for a while. After upgrading, I didnt see a difference, my mac still runs a "full work day". But i would assume your problem would be covered as "manufacturing malfunction" or something like that because it's not your fault.
