MacBook Pro retina as monitor for AV receiver

Hi
Is this possible:
Connect AVReceiver (in this case latest Denon Av2113)  to MacBook Pro and route the video to MacBook Pro (or iMac 2012 27") screen.
For example show bluray (or any other video source that Denon can route) video on the MacBook Pro screen.
Scenario I am trying to make is to avoid purchasing extra tv or monitor for the work room and just use the screen or one of the Apple monitors connected to the computer for video display.
If this is possible how should I connect the devices.
Do I need 3rd party software for this to happen.
I have tried: Mac connected via the HDMI port on Mac to HDMI out of the Denon.
The other way round I can easily play music from Mac  or Mac sounds on Denon connected speakers either via HDMI in or via optical.

  • Macbook Pro Retina External Monitor Blurry

Just got a new macbook pro retina and got it home. After getting everything transferred over from my old toshiba I connected it to my 1 month old HP external monitor and the display is blurry. I have read on many sites that this is a common problem however I can not find a solution. I am hook up from HDMI to HDMI. O don't really want to go through trial and error of different adapter for the lightning port if that will not work. I have tried different HDMI cables to no success. Any Ideas?

    Hi AO1 James,
If I understand correctly, the external monitor was blurry from the moment you plugged it into your MacBook Pro with Retina display. I would first check the resolution settings for the monitor with the "How do I select additional resolutions on my display?" section of the following article:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
If it remains blurry after selecting your monitors optimal resolution, I would use the steps under the "Reset the system" section of the article to help troubleshoot the issue.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Macbook pro retina external monitor mouse skipping, lag problem

When I plug my macbook pro retina (Lion) into a 24" monitor through the DVI adaptor, the cursor jumps erratically every ~10 seconds when being moved. Feels like a lag and is worse with more programs running. Does not depend on mouse or mouse surface. Trackpad does it too. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

  • MacBook Pro Retina, good enough for a few of After Effects? Or should I go for Windows Laptop?

    Hello!
I'm now a college student ! And I'll need to get a new laptop We will be using it for CAD, MathLab etc.,
But I practice on AE, I'm no expert at all (i don't even know some of the controls and keyboard shortcuts), I do like 'opening titles', a bit of 'harry potter effects', etc. I'm really interested in the new Retina Display MacBook Pro (base model), it will be the first time I ever get a Mac if I go for it
But of course, the price is really high, so I have my doubts - the specs of the rMBP is not that superb - i think only the resolution is.
My question is, will the base model rMBP give a decent After Effects CS6 performance, or a significantly worse performance than Windows Laptops at it's price?
    Thank your for your time
Please ask me anything so I can help you better to help me

I have a decked out MacBook Pro Retina and it works very well for all CS6 apps. It's actually faster by a bunch than I thought a laptop could be. I have several personal reasons for going Mac. They are my personal preferences and experience for reliability, stability, and customer service. I'm not married to OSX. If a better system for me was available I'd be using it. The for me is the critical part of that statement.
The biggest advantage of Mac computers is that there is very little chance that the components have not been fully tested and integrated. The QA/QC in all Mac hardware is some of the best in the world. Every Mac I've ever owned has been virtually trouble free mechanically and outlasted every windows machine I've ever owned. Apple does make mistakes and fouls things up, but the chance that you are going to end up with a machine that just works and runs and runs is much higher than anything built from the variety of components available on Windows machines.
Now my comments on windows machines. There are more manufacturers that I can count. There are more hardware combinations that I can imagine. Some manufactures produce excellent products. Some are just junk. Some last a very long time. Some breakdown all the time. If you were to go Windows make sure you check out the reputation and the warranty of the company building your machine. I've only owned one really high end Windows machine from a high end manufacturer. It ran just fine for about a year and a half before it needed some major component replacements. The warranty was out, there was no extended warranty available from that manufacturer, so the repairs cost me about 1/3 of the purchase price. If I'd gone with a company with a better service policy I would have saved a boatload of cash in the long run. Every other windows box that I've owned has been built from scratch or purchased in a shoe string. It took a fair amount of monthly maintenance to keep them running well.
You mentioned CAD... Audocad on the Mac side is really crippled. My associate has the full Autocad Civil Engineering package running on his MacBook Pro Retina under Parallels. It's working fine. It's one of the largest and most complex CAD packages available. It actually works better on the Mac than it does on his HP laptop and the Mac batteries last a lot longer. The HP laptop cost about half what the MBPro did. It's about 6 months older. It's not as loaded. If you were to replace the HD in the HP laptop with the same capacity SSD that is in the MBPro and bump the memory up to 16GB the HP would still be less expensive than the MBPro by about 18%. The HP is plastic and aluminum with a display screen that's very sensitive to scratches and damage by pressure. The HP is not compatible with CS6's ray traced rendering or Mercury playback for PPro. There is an HP model that is though.
You be the judge. Balance your budget and the software requirements with the expectations of reliability, service, customer service, and resale value and make your choice.

  • Using MacBook Pro as a monitor for video camera using HDMI

I want to connect my Canon 70D to HDMI port on MacBook Pro so that I can use the MacBook Pro as a monitor while shooting video with the camera? AppleCare unable to provide a solution.  Is there a way to do this....and/or an app for that?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You cannot use a MacBook Pro as an external display. To do this, you need that Target Display mode is included in the firmware, and this is only available on iMacs.
However, you can still use your MacBook Pro as an external display for another Mac by using ScreenRecycler

I have a new (2-3 weeks) Macbook Pro 13" retina display. A few times since I've had it, the screen went black for about 10 seconds and then came back. Any idea what's up with this? Is this something to return the machine for, or is a software issue? Has anyone else had this happen?
    Thanks!

  • MacBook Pro as second monitor for 27" iMac

    Hello,
Yesterday I purchased a 13" MacBook Pro and a Thunderbolt cable. I figured out how to use my 27" iMac as an extended display for the MacBook Pro by clicking cmnd F2 on the iMac's keyboard but how do you use MacBook Pro as an extended display for the iMac? Clicking cmnd F2 on the laptop doesn't work.
I've come up empty with my searches.
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks so much for all the suggestions! Really, it's opened up my way of looking at it and I can see how these suggestions could come in handy. What I've done for the immediate is install Air Display. It's not ideal as the image fragments somewhat when areas of an image are selected using PS on the external display (MacBook Pro). I'm an animation BG artist so detail is important but once it goes into the main iMac display it seems fine.
I mostly wanted the second monitor as a reference point for what I'm 'painting' on the iMac and to have the ability to select colour, ect. Since I HAD to buy a MBP recently I figured I might as well get the the most from it!
    Cheers!

  • Macbook Pro Retina - HDMI monitor sometimes displays blank during reboot

I'm running two monitors (HDMI, DVI-D) on my MBP Retina 13" running the latest Mavericks 10.9.2, and sometimes when I reboot the HDMI monitor which is set as the main monitor appears black/blank on reboot (power is on but nothing is displaying). The other two screens have signal and are displaying. When this occurs the HDMI monitor power button won't function and I end up having to un-plug/re-plug in the monitor for it to display.
Has anyone come across this or have a solution to this problem?

It appears this also happens when coming out of sleep mode, where the HDMI monitor comes up as a black screen and the DVI-D and laptop screen refresh correctly. (it's as if it's not getting the video signal although the monitor is turned on)
Anyone else come across this? I highly doubt this is a one time case.

  • Late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina 13'' Configuration for Designer

    Hi there!
I'm working as a designer and I'm buying my first macbook. I want really smooth performance, good battery life for traveling and quiet - silent - not overheating - run.
That's why I'd love to have 13" (+ external) display and new Haswell, but I'm not sure about CPU & RAM at all. Could you help me, please?
    I use following apps:
Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator (webdesign, iOS apps, logo & branding)
Chrome tabs (many), Youtube / Spotify for music
Standard office & communication tools (e.g. ms office, skype)
And I'm going to buy new camera and use Lightroom a lot.
    So the questions are:
2,4 or 2,6 GHz (i5) or maybe 2,8 GHz (i7)? I'd love to have performance with i7 but battery life and silent run is more important.
8 or 16 GB RAM? Again, battery life and not overheating is very important. But if i5 & 8GB is not enough for my apps, then I'll buy i7 & 16GB.
    Thanks for any advice!

    1. i7 - you're going to get better performance when running CPU intensive apps (e.g., Photoshop & Illustrator).
    2. Definitely 16GB - you can't replace the RAM in Retina models as you could in the 'older' non-Retina machines.
The Iris graphics in the 13" Retina is going to slow down Photoshop somewhat - I've not seen any specs on PS 3D rendering on the built-in Iris graphics. I don't even know if you can use the Iris graphics (vs. the Iris Pro and the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB of GDDR5 memory) for 3D operation (anyone know?).
I doubt that you would lose much battery life with the i7 - it's all dependent on how you use your MBP when running on battery.

  • CAN I TURN MY MACBOOK PRO INTO A MONITOR?

Help I want to turn my Macbook Pro into a monitor for my Playstation 2 so that way I can record on my screen using quicktime. please help I used a vga adapter from apple a AV to vga converter, and is their any way for me to use an iphone on a mac to play ios games while recording?

I don't think you can without some sort of capture card (very expensive, and because most MacBook Pros don't have a card, you need to use the FW800).  MBP's Thunderbolt port only sends video signals out, you can't attach an HDMI to Mini DisplayPort cable from your camera to the MBP and expect to show video.
You could try a utility like Sofortbild.

  • Messages no longer showing up on my MacBook Pro Retina

I vaguely recall being prompted to sign in to my iCloud account while on my MacBook Pro Retina; immediately thereafter, I stopped receiving messages on my MacBook Pro Retina. In fact, when sending messages via my MacBook Pro Retina, message recipients showed me how messages now appear to be coming from my iCloud account...
what must I do to once again receive messages on my MacBook Pro Retina?

OK, gang...almost an hour on the phone with Apple Care, and this is what I found if you want to reply with your MacBook to messages sent to your iPhone:
    1) on your iPhone, go to to settings, messages, and make sure you are signed in to your Apple ID account
    2) on your MacBook, go to messages, preferences, and make sure your phone number is checked among the accounts...and that "start new conversations from:" is followed by your phone number
