I have to desagree its not normal !!! be advised

Open up activity monitor and under all process, see how much dock is using.  highlight it and hit quit process.
since you're already at activity monitor, hit quit process on anything else using more than 10% of your CPU's resources.
see if your Retina runs cooler once you've done that.
good luck.

  • Why is my new Macbook Pro Retina Display getting so hot?

I've had my Macbook Pro Retina Display for nearly a week and it works like a dream and I love it.
However it does get rather hot, around the F keys it's almost too hot to touch, all I use are internet applications and occasionally Spotify and iTunes so it's not like I'm constantly running hefty software.
I just wanted to check that this is normal as this is my first Macbook, I've been a PC user for 10 years.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Download iStat Pro and report back with the temp readings.

  • I am using MacBook Pro retina display

i am using MacBook Pro retina display with mountain lion but it is not updating to 10.8.2 either this updation is available and also had downloded and working on my friends Macbook Air...why not working on my machine can anybody help me out plzz

An Apple Tech person told me (I have the same problem) that this is a problem that the OSX 10.8.2 update has with solid-state storage devices.  They are working on a fix, he said, and will push it out via Software Update when it's ready.  He had no idea when that would be.

If the Mac is too hot to touch, take it in for service.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 15" Getting Very Hot

My macbook pro retina display 15 inch intel i7, 512gb flash hard drive 16 gb computer is getting hot. When playing a simple flash game like pocket planes (not in fullscreen), and without the battery plugged in, the computer gets to 64 degrees celsius, and the area near the battery plug location gets extremely hot to the touch. While playing youtube videos and such, the computer also gets hot, but generally reaches around 48 degrees, and it will not cool further. Is this normal? I just bought it 3 days ago and the salesperson told me that it would not get as hot as the 13 inch late 2012 macbook pro. Any ideas? Because it is very similar as heat, even though the older model was hotter.

I have the similar issue on my MBP 15" 2012. The top left corner area gets very hot after watch video for a little while.
I think it's the video card that is overheated. My current solution is to use a laptop cooler underneath my MBP. It does help reduce the lock ups in daily uses.
Does any one know how to fix it?

Photoshop elements 10 will not migrate to my new macbook pro/retina display.  There is no CD/DVD player on this machine.  Any suggestions on how to get Elements onto my machine?  Yes, I have the disk(s).  Am I going to have to buy an external CD/DVD player to load this one program:(

I have ordered a USB3 BluRay/DVD/CD player/burner and will use that both with my iMac ( in which the Superdrive seems to be failing ) and the MBPro Retina I just bought .

  • Macbook Pro Retina 13" Gets Very Hot

Hi, I noticed my Macbook Pro Retina 13" gets very hot after 30 minutes of usage, practically "burning" on my thigh (it left burning mark a few times actually, especially in the summer). I usually put a book between the laptop and me to prevent the heat. Is there a better way?

What are you doing on your MacBook when it gets hot? I have a retina and it gets hot when I play games like Team Fortress 2 or Garry's Mod, watching videos on youtube, and using the iTunes visualizer. What's odd is it doesn't get hot when I watch movies on iTunes. If it's getting hot just sitting around, you may have a problem that needs to be check out as soon as possible. I had a 13" mid 2012 non-retina pro that had three logic boards replaced in less than a year of purchase. Every time the board was failing, it would freeze sometime after it was put to sleep and it would get really hot and the fan would be screaming trying to keep up. Then it would freeze as I'm using it. The screen would flash pixels of all colors in random spots all around the screen. If Apple didn't cover the repairs, I would have paid $530 per repair.

  • Macbook Pro Retina Display hard crashes - not caused by Google Chrome

Hi, all. This is my first time posting on these forums, and it is only due to the unsurpassed amount of frustration I have had with my mbpr. I received it in late August, and it worked great. Yes, I had the waking from sleep problem, but that got fixed in an update and didn't bother me too much. What did bother me was when I started installing my games.
I play a ton of games, I have Steam, Diablo III (which Apple during their keynote said is compatible with the retina display resolution and worked with Apple on making it so), WoW and others. Anytime I play any game, it pretty much crashes and I have not been able to find a single solution.
I have tried disabling graphics switching, installing 3rd party programs to disable graphics switching and uninstalling them again, using an external monitor and the built in retina display, verifying/repairing permissions, setting a cap on the FPS in a game as to not make my laptop hot at all (even crashed with a 30 FPS cap), re-installing OS X Mountain Lion from recovery, resetting the NVRAM...
The computer just locks up, goes into a sound loop (like a record skipping very quickly), and becomes totally unresponsive to anything except a hard reset. On wake, it will always display "Your computer has shut down because of a problem, would you like to open the applications blah blah". Basically asking if I want to start where I left off. It never gives an option to send a report to Apple.
Oh also, it can sometimes crash when it's just remotely warm? For example, when I was re-installing OS X ML from recovery the FIRST time (I did it twice), it crashed mid-installation!
The funny thing is, I have windows 7 installed via Bootcamp. Whenever I play any games on that partition...100% fine. No problems, handles graphics beautifully. Using the OS for anything else such as watching videos, downloading music or movies, using any applications is fine. It just seems to be games (or a very small amount of heat? I'm not sure).
Any suggestions? I'm completely stuck on finding any solutions. My experience with the Apple store has been awful in the past, and going to them with any problem is a last resort for me. In the past, I have been able to solve many problems on my own with enough googling and forum digging.
This, after months, is still unsolvable for me. Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.
15" MacBook Pro Retina Display, Mountain Lion 10.8.2, 2.6 ghz i7.
tl;dr: Macbook crashes everytime I play a game or when it gets warm, I'm not sure, help.

Sorry that no one answered your question the first go-round - sometimes these things just slip by us.
Most people would have probably just recommended taking your machine to your local Apple Store.
Which is what you did - and all is well now, I'm assuming?

  • Screen on 15" Macbook Pro Retina Display.

I bough my 15" Macbook Pro Retina Display in August 2012. I recently noticed that when I open the macbook,  I can see the screen shaking everytime I move the macbook pro on the table. I can feel it loose and when I touch it I test if it is loose I can see like 1/2mm movement back and forth when it is open.
I don't know if it is just me and my OCD sense senses for this macbook pro.
I just wanted to make sure.
Does it get loos when opening after you have used it for more than half a year?
    Appreciate your oppinions!

Your appointment at the genius Bar for an evaluation is free, in warranty or out.
They can explain why it wiggles, tell you whether that is normal or not, give advice about what you can do to reduce its annoyance, and fix it if it is not normal. That is what they are trained to do, all day every day.
There is no expectation that every time you visit they will find a way to make money off you, like a car dealership.
The Genius Bar service exists because Apple wants you to be a happy customer, if possible. If you are willing to make an appointement and come to them (spending your time and energy to do so) they will work with you for nothing in an attempt to solve your problems, whatever they may be.

  • Macbook pro retina display wifi connection problem.

Macbook pro Retina display - 3 weeks old - connects erratically to home wifi over Airport Express
iphone and iMac connects to the same wifi network. I am connecting through iphone hot spot to write this question. please help.

I have posted my solution  i.e. update airport utility software. Ocourse you needa working internet connection for that!
I have a 27 inch imac, mac book pro, mac book pro with retina display, iphone 4, iphone 4s, 2 x iphone 5. Each device was showing erratic internet connections at some point in time or the other.
I just updated Airport Utility Software. You can find it in Applications/Utilities. When you click on Airport utilities, it opens a window with 2 icons. The bottom icon will look like your airport express. click on that and then you will get info on the right. If , I repeat if, your Airport utility software requires updation, you will be prompted in the info box. Click that and then you will be fine.
However, the irony is that you need an internet connection for this. I set up a hot spot on my phone and did it.

  • The Logic Board of my MacBook Pro Retina Display stopped working.

I purchased my MacBook Pro Retina Display 13 months ago. Barring a few errors the computer functioned beautifully, and I maintained it with the care it deserved. On Wednesday, last week, the laptop ceased to work completely. It wouldn't start, or charge. On submitting it for repair, I was informed that the logic board failed. Since its warranty lapsed a month ago, $1050 is required for its replacement. That outrageous amount is more than half of what I paid initially for the laptop. The service provider would not agree to any concession, or plea.
For an Apple enthusiast, it is very disheartening to learn that its foremost product stops operating in this manner. I am a high school senior, who has accustomed himself to his computer, and cannot at this time purchase a new laptop, let alone a Windows laptop. With college admission deadlines fast approaching, I solicit your help and suggestions, very desparately.

As much as it will suck to hear this answer, there really is no solution. Because the computer is now out of warranty, you have to pay the full $1050 to get the logic board replaced. I know this is a large sum of money, but you have to remember that the logic board includes the CPU, Graphics Card and RAM, all soldered onto the board. You're paying to replace all of the most expensive components of your computer, even if only one of them failed.
So, long story short, you'll have to either pay to replace the logic board, because it's out of warranty, or buy a new computer.

  • "Servie Battery" Macbook Pro Retina Display

    Hi All,
My Mid 2012 Macbook Pro Retina display is giving me a notification saying my battery needs to be serviced. It recently has been acting up a little, where sometimes it doesn't wake from sleep and i have to restart the system to get it to turn on. What exactly does "Service Battery" mean? There isn't a apple store in my town and the nearest would mean a 1hr 30min drive, so my question is should the battery need to be replaced, is this something that can be done by the genius bar in-store within a couple hours? Or would it be a couple days? I don't want to drive up to the apple store only for them to have the replace the battery having to order it or something. Im a college student and I literally cannot survive without my laptop. Also it is worth mentioning my laptop is still under warranty. So technically if any work needed to be done I shouldn't have to pay a cent right?
Would be great if could get so insight from some people who've experienced a similar "service battery" issue.

    Hi there Ahsu882,
You may find the information about battery service messages in the article below helpful.
Mac OS X v10.6: About the Battery menu bar extra for Mac notebooks
About "Replace Now" and "Service Battery"
If a Mac notebook's battery is unable to hold a charge for long (or at all), the Battery menu will display either a "Replace Now" or "Service Battery" alert. If you see this, and if the battery in the Mac notebook is removable, try removing and reseating it. Make sure the power cord is connected to your computer and a power outlet. If the battery is not removable, it may be necessary to reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
Your Mac notebook's battery may need to be inspected and/or replaced if the issue persists.
The warranty coverage of batteries is determined by a couple of things:
Apple - Batteries - Service and Recycling
Your battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 1000 complete charge cycles. The one-year warranty includes replacement coverage for a defective battery. Apple offers a battery replacement service for all MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro notebooks with built-in batteries.
