Macbook Pro Retina freezes on wake from sleep

Ever since the Mavericks 10.9.2 update my computer "freezes" on waking up from sleep. Each time I wake it up I require a password immediately, and about once a day (out of 5-7 times that I wake it up) I will put in my password, the password field becomes grayed out, acknowledging that I hit return, and then does nothing. It doesn't become unresponsive (I can still move the mouse), but the computer doesn't unlock.
I left it sitting like this for 30 minutes one time and it just sat on this screen. If I put it back to sleep or shut the shell and try to log in again it does the same thing.
The only way to resolve (that I've found) is to do a hard shutdown, which has led to the loss of some unsaved work.
Doing a hard reset once (sometimes twice or three times) a day is pretty frustrating. Is anyone else experiencing this problem and has anyone found a fix?

One other thing I noticed that could or could not be the problem but is sure curious is the option in the Energy Saver control pane for automaticly dimming the screen before sleep. I first noticed when I got my MacBook Pro that this option was enabled without it be marked as on. I checkmarked it then unchecked it again and the screen did not appear to dim before sleep anymore. However, since the last kernel panic on Monday, I have reenabled the option thinking it could possibly be this. It's kind of far fetched I know, but my system has been stable for past 2 days so perhaps this software flaw in the Energy Saver is the blame. Sort of makes sense since this timmer for dimming is activated before sleep of the display which might corrispond with some part of the sleep/wake system of the computer and/or Mac OS X. Later, I am going to try turning the dimmer off and cycling the computer from sleep to wake and see if I get a panic. I'll keep everyone posted as to my results.

  • MacBook Pro kernel panic on wake from sleep

I need some advice. Over the past few days, my MacBook Pro has been experiencing kernel panics when I open the screen and it wakes from sleep. The panic is immediate; there is no lag or time between opening the computer and the initiation of the event. It appears to be intermittent however and I wanted to get some input on this before I start troubleshooting it. Perhaps I may need to have Apple take a look at the unit but I would like to solve the issue (if possible) myself.
One thing I did notice is that the kernel panics started only after I recently updated Mac OS X with the most recent Security Update 2006-003, Quicktime 7.1 and Front Row 1.2.2. Not sure if this is related however, it is interesting that the panics started almost immediately following the software update.
    Here is the panic log:

  • Macbook Pro (2008) won't wake from sleep?

Two days ago, a day after replacing an old battery, my 2008 model Macbook Pro refused to wake from sleep. For the past 48 hours it has been doing one of two things.
              A) It will act normally, except that the screen is blank (make the start-up sound, and sound as though it's running when I try to wake it)
               or
              B) Act as if it's sleeping.
    I have tried:
    -Resetting the SMC
    -Resetting the PRAM
-Restarting the laptop from battery power
-Restarting with it plugged in a battery removed
Someone gave me the idea to hook up an external monitor, and see if it's my screen, but it's in the "Don't wake from sleep" stage at the moment. It's is out of warranty, so I want to see if anyone has any solutions or suggestions before I pay someone to take a look at it.
    Thanks!

I'm convinced the price of repairs is a ploy to drive up new sales figures! As are these convenient 'catastrophic' hardware issues! It's odd that every post asking about this fault crop up after 4 or 5 years of impeccable reliability, it's like they are self destruct to force you into the clutches of an overly friendly assistant who leaves you wanting to invite them round for Sunday dinner because your nan will adore them! Ahhh well shiny new apple things do fill the void in lives only satisfied by something over priced to stroke and adore!

  • Macbook Pro 13" won't wake from sleep

Have mid 2009 Macbook Pro 13" that repeatedly won't wake from sleep.  Either putting to sleep via lid closure or sleep command, seems to enter sleep OK.  Sleep light slowly flashes indicating sleep.  When I open lid, light goes out but screen doesn't come on.  I have hold power button down to force it off and reboot.  Very annoying.  Occasionally, the laptop is warm and you can hear the fan running.
I have taken to Genius Bar twice to no avail.  They could duplicate the problem the first time I had it in and ran some type of software repair.  Didn't permanently fix issue.  Second trip they tech thought it might be one of the two internal sleep switches.  She ordered them but when they ran diagonsics on those switches, the said they were good and didn't replace or repair anything.
I have replaced both HDD and RAM and reinstalled 10.8 but problem continues.  Any suggestions?

Not sure if this will help--but my MacBook was having similar problems. It would fall asleep and then when I would try to wake the computer, the screen would stay black but the computer was running.
    Here is what I tried:
    Turn of your mac
    Press the power on button
Immediately after you press the power on button: hold down the following 4 keys:
Command + Option + P + R. Continue to hold them down until you hear your mac make the power on sound twice. Once you hear it twice, let go of all keys.
This should re-set the sleep settings. Worked for my computer, I hope it works for you if you haven't already tried it.

  • New MacBook Pro 13" won't wake from sleep

Been having this problem from day one. MBP is only a month old.
Every time the machine goes to sleep it will not wake. No response to mouse or keyboard commands. Each time I have to do a force shut down and restart the machine. Not ideal.
Local tech guys had a look and said taht the machine wasn't saving a sleep image, they fixed that, ran some updates and the first test I did the machine did wake from sleep. Unfortunately that same night it was back to it's same no-wake state.
Anyone have any ideas as to what's happening here?

  • Macbook Pro Retina 2013 not waking from sleep

    Hi all,
My brand new 15" Retina Macbook Pro (late 2013) is not waking from sleep. It doesn't occur after a short sleep (as I can wake it as normal by moving my mouse), but if the sleep is for some extended duration (not exactly sure, but at least within a couple of hours) then the only way to wake it is to use the power button.
I've tried an SMC reset to no avail -- the problem still occurs.
It's plugged into a power adapter and this is a screenshot of the settings page.
This is a very annoying issue. I'm hoping someone can help?
    Thanks!
    Adam

I managed to narrow down and reproduce the issue:
It occurs when the 'turn display off after' time lapses. Eg, if I change the setting to 1 minute and wait for the display to turn off, the computer will *not* wake up without pressing the power button.
Very strange. Hoping someone can provide some insight!
    Thanks,
    Adam

  • Why do USB drives plugged into USB hubs make my Mac Book Pro (Retina late 2013) wake from sleep?

I have 2 x USB hubs, a Logitech USB 2.0 hub and a Broway USB 3.0 hub. Tested both and both seem to be the cause of my late 2013 Mac Book Pro waking from sleep. I ran syslog to find out why (syslog |grep -i "Wake reason") and the reason I got back was "kernel[0] <Notice>: Wake reason: XHC1" - this means nothing to me, but it didn't take too much mucking about to hunt the problem down and figure out it was the USB hub with any USB drive attached. If the drive is attached directly to the computer. No problem, computer sleeps fine.
This was a problem I encountered (and never solved) with OSX 10.6.8, a 2008 Macbook Pro the same Logitech USB 2.0 hub, but with different drives. I put the problem down to a bug that never got solved in an old system. But I am simply AMAZED after my update to a new MBP and new system that it is still about almost 6 years, a dozen MBP's and 4 systems later.
The other problem is that not only does the USB drive/ USB hub combo wake the computer it also loses the drive upon sleep and mounts it again upon wake. Then repeats this process every couple of minutes. And it obviously doesn't eject the drives properly because each time I return to the computer after I put it to sleep or let it go to sleep I get a giant list of "Disk Not Ejected Properly" notifications about it. Which I'm guessing could eventually cause some file damage.
I've tried combinations of different drives, different hubs (a Belkin and a no-name Chinese brand 2.0 hub) and the problem persists. Is there a solve to this problem? I'm surprised to see so little posts on forums about this. Am I just unlucky and got another combination of faulty/problematic hardware, or is this a real problem that exists for everyone? If not I would love to know if people have found winning combos of USB hubs and drives. But if it is, then it HAS to be solved.
If you have a Macbook Pro, then you are limited to 2 USB outlets, this is obviously a bare minimum and I would say that 95% of people using their laptop computer in the office or at home have a hub, and very likely a USB drive attached to it. I know actual Apple reps don't really pay much attention to the community support posts, but I've got 6 months worth of Applecare left and would like suggestions about how to get Apple's attention about this problem.
BTW Jettison (a 3rd party app that ejects drives properly before sleep) is not a solve. It is a 3rd party app that tries to fill a hole in a broken system. I don't want to eject my drive upon sleep, I want it to got the **** to sleep.

Is there a pattern to the time of day or other detail that may be
traced back to a OS X system cause of this odd phenomenon?
Are there any copies of system files on any of the attached USB
external drives? Any libraries, such as iTunes, iPhoto, etc?
Once the drives are indexed by Spotlight, are their permissions
ignored by the OS X? Content, if neutral, should not affect the
wake or sleep cycle; especially if they're ignored by the OS X.
Could there be a bad cable or other component? If so that would
be a difficult process of elimination to detect it. Usually replacing
most suspect components in the USB stream (external to Macs)
is a rote way to mechanically test that idea; & not 100% sure.
Does the equipment all have a good ground to the utility or house
electrical field? An intermittent ground may affect more than sleep.
Hard to say at this point. Maybe a late-night talk radio guru on
remote viewing could peer into your situation and sleuth it out?
Sorry to have run out of ideas, but the process must be electrical
& mechanical to some extent. - Or perhaps odd software inspired.
Do you have any phone-home spyware items inside, just jumping
at the chance to spill your information? Little Snitch may help.
PS: Perhaps the computer needs to go into Apple & have a genius
or product specialist at AASP test the unit thoroughly... BlueTooth?

    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Mac Pro network freezes on wake from sleep

This problem has been growing over the past few weeks. It involves symptoms similar to other postings, but as of yet I have not found a common answer.
If my machine is running well and I reboot, boot times are slower than previous but not unreasonable.
If the machine goes to sleep, upon wake, the network is frozen. Attempts to access mail or browse an internet page are impossible. No errors, but no action. From this state if I try to shut down, it fails to shutdown unless I force quit most programs open. I can not quit out of Mail or Browsers, as they are "stuck" attempting to access internet.
When restarting 15 or 20 minute restart times are not surprising - this commonly occurs with only a blank white screen.
I do not have FileVault turned on.
I have reset the Printer several times - not sure what affect this has or doesn't
I can move the Ethernet Cable to the other port and sometime complete some work, but this is an inconsistent fix.
When I restart I commonly get an error that reads the unit was shutdown improperly, a loading bar that can take minutes to load, and code that will run down the screen at an early stage of the boot.
Once I get restarted, the machine will act perfectly normal until hours later when it awakened from an extended sleep and the network is again frozen. If the network does not freeze, none of the above issues seem present - this is entirely random as far as I can tell.

  • MacBook pro 17" will not wake from sleep mode

Ok so my MacBook Pro 17" with osx 10.6.8 will not awaken from sleep mode. when attempting to wake it up the screen dosent come on and the mouse and keyboard do not receve any power. to get back on the computer i have to force a hard restart by holding the power button for 10 seconds then pressing it again. then it boots to where i left off when i closed the lid. i have read a few forums about this problem and i have went through all the steps of reseting various things and went as far as going into terminal using sudo to disable safe sleep and nothing helps. i noticed an unusual error in my console. here is a  copy of my console log. the one in question is  {7/14/13 4:52:43 AM com.apple.UserEventAgent-Aqua[118] dontAutoLoad = EMPTY!}  someone please help me I am over 150 miles from the nearest apple store or authorised retailer

  • MacBook Pro Retina won't wake after after sleeping!

On most occasions after my 13" MacBook Pro Retina  has been put to sleep (by closing lid or pressing Power  button) overnight  it will not wake up again until I have reset the Systems Management Controller.   Opening the lid, or Power button or Space bar still leaves a black screen.
My wife's new 11" MacBook Air suffers similar problems even after our local Apple Store reinstalled Mavericks in an attempt to resolve the problem..
Any thoughts on a solution would be gratefully received - thanks.

  • Macbook pro screen dims after waking from sleep?

Does anyone know why my macbook pro screen dims when waking from sleep or waking from my screen saver? I can't get it to stop doing this. Thanks.

It sounds like I have the same thing happening. It's more like the colors are washed out, like there is less contrast. I have a hot corner set up for my screen saver. Once I activate the screen saver for a second and then deactivate it, the Macbook screen goes back to normal. I have a 30" Samsung 305T monitor set up as a second (main) screen for when I'm working at home, which is most of the time. I haven't had it unplugged from the Macbook since this started, so I don't know if it happens by itself. I do know that the Samsung looks fine when waking up from the screen saver at the same time.
I tried to find others with this problem in this forum, but got tired of looking through all the other posts that had nothing to do with this problem.
    Can anyone help us?

  • Macbook Pro Retina 13'' - Power button and sleep mode

I just updated my Mac, which is the latest Macbook Pro Retina 13''. All of a sudden, it refuses to enter sleep mode when I press the power button, which worked perfectly fine before the update. I now have to manually enter sleep mode from the monitor. After entering sleep mode, It works fine to press the power button to make it work again, but not reverse. Why?
    Thanks in advance!

I have this problem as well. Worked perfectly before I updated to OS X Mavericks (10.9.2).
Now I have to hold the power button in for it to sleep or click on it for a few times. But there is no problem when I'm going to wake the computer up, just a single push and it works fine. Is this a software issue or a hardware issue? Any respond from Apple regarding this issue and how to solve it? Or should i contact my retailer?

  • USB mouse freezes after wake from sleep.

Since the 10.8.2 update my Logitech USB mouse freezes after waking up the computer from sleep or when it goes into energy save from non use. This also happens to my brand new MBPR. I tries repair permissions and reset the smc. Any suggestions?

I get a frozen mouse (Microsoft Intellimouse Optical) on my 2012 Mac Mini running Mavericks (it did it with Mountain Lion also) when waking from sleep about 75% of the time which works again if I unplug/replug it (light is on and mouse buttons work when it's frozen, but the pointer won't move).  It does this whether I use a built-in USB3 port, a USB2 hub and now also with my new USB3 hub.
However, my 2008 Macbook Pro also has an Intellimouse connected to it when docked and it NEVER freezes when waking from sleep whether using the built-in USB2 port or a Gmyle USB3 card port.  Either way, the mouse wakes fine and it's the SAME MODEL MOUSE and SAME OSX verison.  I have no idea why the inconsistency.  It ***** because "Wake on Network Activity" FINALLY works right here in Mavericks with XBMC on my Mac Mini so there's a perfect opportunity to save some electricity.  I got excited when it woke up two times in a row with 10.9.1 and set up my sleep controls only to find it wouldn't go to sleep with the Energy Savings menu because I have an external USB3.0 3TB media drive connected (at all times).  I finally found out (through more patient testing) that once the drive spun down (possibly on its own power saving timer as I'm not sure the "Shut down hard drives when possible" setting works in Mavericks; it was messed up in Mountain Lion in 10.8.4 and even though 10.8.5 fixed it, I'm not sure Mavericks is using the same code.  It doesn't seem to shut down any faster with or without the setting on and shuts off several minutes after the computer attempts to go to sleep (on a 1 minute test setting; I think WD defaults to 10 minutes in firmware).
Anyway, once that was resolved and I saw it would go to sleep eventually once the drive spun down (it will sleep instantly if I select SLEEP from the Apple menu which I find odd if it's such a big deal that it's connected....), I thought OH BOY!  I'm all set.  Then I woke it from that sleep and found my mouse was frozen again..... :-(  What a PITA to unplug/plug the mouse every time it wakes from sleep.  It's not worth it.  I'll just have to pay the extra few bucks in electricity each month I could have saved to avoid such a freaking nightmare hassle.  Why on God's Green Earth, Apple CANNOT or WILL NOT fix their darn energy savings features is just beyond me.  Instead of spending all their time making horrible horrible ugly icon/GUI updates to iOS and making it slower and slower and slower, why don't they actually fix some darn bugs in OSX for once in their lives.... I'm starting to think I should give Windows another chance I'm so annoyed right now.  But then I think about having to run a malware program and have that program update and Windows software/security updates 3x a day and I think I can just deal with the Mini not sleeping.....
I'd like to know why Apple couldn't figure out those of us with multiple monitors would want a dock on BOTH monitors all the time either (first side-mount docks wouldn't migrate and now in 10.9.1, bottom-mounted docks won't migrate here either, leaving a dock on one monitor all the time and if that's the monitor that is showing full-screen video, you lost your dock completely while the video is playing.  They finally figured out after a full decade that having a menu bar on both screens would be a good idea, but it just didn't occur to them that the same is true of the dock.  How much are they paying these guys?  Too much apparently (or is it too little to attract talented thinkers? Nah, it couldn't be since we give them feedback and they just ignore it).
