Your machine is rather new and thus under the one year warranty.
I would highly suggest you purchase AppleCare for a additional two more years of coverage.
Have your vent fins behind the fans cleaned annually.
The MacBook Pro's are NOT 3D gaming machines, you are substantially contributing to it's early death by playing intensive 3D games on laptop machines which are not designed to handle it.
The Retina's are the worst, because it gives you 3D performance which heats the machine up, but also inhales more dust than normal non-3D gaming operations and the exhaust port vents can't be cleaned by the user. Which dust eventually blocks the cooling fins and hot air can't escape the machine properly.
The video chip gets overheated and dies prematurely depending how much 3D activity is generated.
If your a serious 3D gamer, then you really need to consider using a Windows 7 3D gaming tower instead.
You can get video card upgrades, use multiple video cards, clean the dust out and also perform video driver and other updates to improve performance.
What is up with 3D gaming on Mac's?

  • My Macbook Pro Retina 2012 is running very slow and gives me frequent speed problems.

So, I've noticed it happen gradually for about a year now. It started with just minor but not significant delays in opening up programs, but I didn't mind it because the computer was still fast compared to a PC, which is what I used to use before this Macbook. I got this macbook in 2012, and luckily I still have a warranty, but it'll close soon.
    Right now, some problems include:
    1)
    2) Shutting down and turning on the computer is slow (sorry no picture on this one). When I first bought this mac, and until about a year ago, whenever I turn it on/off it would do it instantly. But now, there is a bit of a delay when turning off. The screen seems to just freeze at a certain frame, stays that way for a few seconds (longer when turning it off right after playing a game or two-- don't worry they're compatible with Mac OS), and then shuts off. And when it's frozen at that frame time, you can still see the background materials because they're only faded away. You know what I'm talking about-- Macbook turns out when turning off and then shuts down. So, much of the screen is white, but you can still see the screen prior to the shut down faded.
    3) Internet is running extremely slow. When I check my speed at speedtest.net, I get around 47 mbps on bad days and 53-ish on good days (download speed)

Resetting computer to factory conditions doesn't work, time-machine didn't work, and clearing more storage space didn't work either. I would like to get this problem fixed before my warranty runs out. Thanks for reading and any sort of help will be appreciated!

Do you know of any specific tasks or situations that cause it to perform poorly? If so, make a note of those and demonstrate them for Apple. Do NOT, under any circumstances, restart the machine. You want it at its worst when you take it in. If you try to do any of those magic resets, it may just reset things just long enough for Apple to proclaim it healthy. If Apple does that anyway, then there are plenty of opportunities to try those things later after your warranty has expired.
I wish I knew exactly when it does this, but it doesn't always happen. It sometimes does, and sometimes doesn't. I thought about this, too. But the problem is that it's really hard to catch a time or figure out what causes these symptoms to occur. I haven't taken it to Apple because I thought it'll just be a waste of time because they'll probably say that it's healthy so they don't have to put any money/effort to try and fix it...

  • Macbook pro retina graphic glitch

    Hello,
I'd like to share with you my story with the problems I've had with my macbook pro retina 15' 2012 (with both intel and nvidia graphics) and ask for some help.
First of all, back when it still had Mountain Lion as its OS I already detected some graphic glitches. When I started the mbpr, 1 out of 5 times it would load buggy. The dock would shake whenever I move the mouse over it, exposé would lag a lot and eventually scrolling in Safari was terrible, incredibly shaky. Basically every animation on the OS went laggy or just at 10 fps.
However the performance in terms of speed and results was still OK. If I played a game I would detect no error whatsoever.
So after some months of ignoring it because I had work and couldn't take the mac to the store I decided to take it. It was getting worse as it started to happen more often than usual. By then I had already upgraded to Mavericks (no clean install, just updated) and the problem still persisted.
    Visit #1:
After explaning the problem and being able to show it to the genius they took my mac. They called a couple of days after telling me it was a OS issue and they did a clean install of Mavericks.
So I took it home, reinstall everything from scratch, they told me it may be an account/user issue so I better not use time machine to recover anything.
After a month it started to happen again. I have to say that it happen after I had already installed everything quite some time before, not right after installing any particular app or while running any.
It would load buggy again 1 out of 2/3 times and it wouldn't stop until I restarted and if I was lucky enough it would load OK.
    Visit #2:
I returned to the genius and explained again the problem. They decided that it had to be some graphic issue related to the intel or nvidia systems so they replaced the logic board.
Again a couple of weeks later I detected the problem again.
    Visit #3:
Once more to the store, they were quite puzzled that even after replacing the motherboard it would still show the issue.
After doing some tests they decided to reinstall Mavericks. Once installed they found no issue so they decided it was solved.
After this I had to return once again because it turn out that they forgot to connect the keyboard backlight system and it wouldn't light.
Anyway, this time I decided to install only the absolutely necesary apps for my work. I even downloaded the newest versions of all of them (if they had newer). Most of those apps are from the Mac App Store and the ones that are not are absolutely famous and used by thounsands of people, not that I use alphas or betas of any app.
One important detail is that the problem was getting worse. Now every time I started the mac it would be buggy and it was extremely shaky, it was impossible to read while scrolling in Safari now. Sometimes when using exposé/mission control it would even show weird pixels on screen. Every time I had this problem it was worse, more shaky and more often.
    Visit #4:
Being already a VIP visitor of the genius bar I went decided to solve the problem once and for all. I told them every detail, they saw the problem and I insisted on the software I had was completely "normal". They told me they would replace the screen, the logic board again and the IO just in case.
So imagine my surprise when I receive a call from the genius who was repairing my machien saying that after reinstalling Mavericks it showed no issue! I was furious. They insisted that it was some app I had installed and that I needed to install one app at a time, wait ONE WEEK and if nothing happens install the next.
They were not kidding aparently. After complaining I had no choice but to take my mac back and....here I am.
So my question (after the diary I've written, sorry) is:
Is this really being caused by an app I have installed? Is really an app capable of crash the entire animation system and only while in the OS UI and not in games? I've never had any app running on the background besides Fantastical (from Appstore) and Dropbox (updated).
I am listing the apps I had last time I resintalled everything:
    1. 2Do (appstore)
    2. Indesign CC
    3. Appcleaner
    4. Autocad 2014
    5. World of warcraft
    6. Dropbox
    7. Evernote (appstore)
    8. Fantastical (appstore)
    9. Keynote, Pages & Numbers (appstore)
    10. Pixelmator (appstore)
    11. Sketchup 2014
    12. Skype
    13. Steam
    14. The unarchiver
    15. Transmission
    16. VLC
    17. iPhoto
So, 17 apps, which I believe are just a few. Is there any of those apps you think may cause any issue? I haven't installed anything yet. I am using my old macbook pro (which btw have every app I had in the buggy retina with no problem whatsoever) while I try to see if the problem persist while installing nothing.
I still don't believe it is a software problem. Since it appears every time sooner and with more "intensity" I suspect it might be hardware but I am no expert.
Thanks for any help or info you can share!

Go for a few day (2-3) without installing any apps. Then install AutoCAD 2014 first and run only that for another couple of days. See if the problems resurface. If not, go ahead and reinstall all software, making sure that you create a clone after everything's installed (try Carbon Copy Cloner - they have a few 30-day evaluation period, I believe).
If problems resurface, you'll know that it's hardware.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Macbook Pro Retina 13 inch Mid 2014 Bad battery.

Hello, 2 months after i got my macbook pro retina, my battery started dropping. For example, at 100%, it says 4 hours remaining, it used to have 8. I tried restarting PRAM, but nothing changed. It started to happen ever since i updated to Yosemite i think.

There's nothing wrong with the battery. Your MBP simply seems to use quite a lot of power. Try to find out what's causing that with Activity Monitor: How to use Activity Monitor - Apple Support
If that doesn't solve it, try the four steps in this topic: Guide: How to solve Yosemite memory leaks and CPU usage

  • Premiere Pro CS6 and MacBook Pro Retina : Painfully slow exports, very long renders

    Hello All,
This question seems to have been posted before..
I came from Windows land and have used Premiere since '97..
"Let's try a super spec Macbook and have a mobile editing suite.. Great!"
I generally work with DSLR footage, H264 codec and .wav files.
Imports and scrubbing is great, applying effects starts it slowing down and I'll adjust playback to 1/2 or 1/4 resolution.
And that's just on one layer of video..
Now, when it comes to exporting in general, a 50 second clip takes over 30 minutes to render.
    Very frustrating..
I mainly export using the existing presets for YoutubeHD and VimeoHD.
Can't get my head around why it takes so long and I am hoping that perhaps a re-install or a fundamental preference setting will solve it.
In my preferences, I've allocated 11GB of memory to Adobe Production Suite applications and I rarely run 2 at a time.
Scratch disks are set to project folders, on a 4GB RAID1 drive connected via Thunderbolt protocol
    Tech specs :
    Processor  - 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory - 16GB 1600Mhz DDR3
Graphics -   NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
    Storage - SSD 500GB
    OS - OS X, v10.8.3
I look forward to hearing back from you and thank you in advance

Well, I've run a few tests, and learned something new.
CS6 on my MacBook Pro has three acceleration modes now: Software, Hardware (OpenCL) and Hardware (CUDA).
I've run software only... not so great. Then I ran Hardware Open CL, and it "acts" like CUDA did on my Mac Pro with GTX 285... bars that were red turned yellow, and some things ran without rendering! I was pretty surprised by this, as I have only 512MB VRAM, not 1GB VRAM on the 650M.
This is only my not-very-serious edit-on-the-road system, so I didn't spec it out to be a monster editing laptop, but I'm extremely pleased by how well it runs with CS6. I have two very nice, new SSDs inside; one for OS X/apps, and the other for media, as well as 16GB RAM. Each SSD runs at 500MB/sec +/- whether read or write, despite the second SSD being in the space where the optical drive was.
It's too bad there's not just a *wee bit* more space where the optical drive was... or I'd try to stuff THREE SSDs inside, and RAID two of them for media.
So far, I'm really pleased with how well it works with only 512MB VRAM, which was the question I had wanted answered.

  • Macbook pro retina (Graphic Cad problem)

Hello, I've I problem with My graphic card. Before I was able to play every game decently but now after three week (I was in holiday), I can't play nicely. I think that the dedied card Nvidia GT650M don't work and it's the HD4000 who works in her place. Even when I see in the info that the GT650 is on, when I play, it's not smoothy and all are laging.
Please help me I don't no what to do

This is a known issue, do a SMC reset and it will be back to normal for a while. This only works until your macbook pro have been in sleep mode a couple of times, then you have to do it again. Call apple support and perhaps even go to an apple store, they are not recognizing this as a real issue yet, so the more that report it the better.
Seems to be related to an EFI update that came out a couple of weeks ago, but that may just be a coincidence.

But I practice on AE, I'm no expert at all (i don't even know some of the controls and keyboard shortcuts), I do like 'opening titles', a bit of 'harry potter effects', etc. I'm really interested in the new Retina Display MacBook Pro (base model), it will be the first time I ever get a Mac if I go for it
But of course, the price is really high, so I have my doubts - the specs of the rMBP is not that superb - i think only the resolution is.
My question is, will the base model rMBP give a decent After Effects CS6 performance, or a significantly worse performance than Windows Laptops at it's price?
    Thank your for your time
Please ask me anything so I can help you better to help me

I have a decked out MacBook Pro Retina and it works very well for all CS6 apps. It's actually faster by a bunch than I thought a laptop could be. I have several personal reasons for going Mac. They are my personal preferences and experience for reliability, stability, and customer service. I'm not married to OSX. If a better system for me was available I'd be using it. The for me is the critical part of that statement.
The biggest advantage of Mac computers is that there is very little chance that the components have not been fully tested and integrated. The QA/QC in all Mac hardware is some of the best in the world. Every Mac I've ever owned has been virtually trouble free mechanically and outlasted every windows machine I've ever owned. Apple does make mistakes and fouls things up, but the chance that you are going to end up with a machine that just works and runs and runs is much higher than anything built from the variety of components available on Windows machines.
Now my comments on windows machines. There are more manufacturers that I can count. There are more hardware combinations that I can imagine. Some manufactures produce excellent products. Some are just junk. Some last a very long time. Some breakdown all the time. If you were to go Windows make sure you check out the reputation and the warranty of the company building your machine. I've only owned one really high end Windows machine from a high end manufacturer. It ran just fine for about a year and a half before it needed some major component replacements. The warranty was out, there was no extended warranty available from that manufacturer, so the repairs cost me about 1/3 of the purchase price. If I'd gone with a company with a better service policy I would have saved a boatload of cash in the long run. Every other windows box that I've owned has been built from scratch or purchased in a shoe string. It took a fair amount of monthly maintenance to keep them running well.
You mentioned CAD... Audocad on the Mac side is really crippled. My associate has the full Autocad Civil Engineering package running on his MacBook Pro Retina under Parallels. It's working fine. It's one of the largest and most complex CAD packages available. It actually works better on the Mac than it does on his HP laptop and the Mac batteries last a lot longer. The HP laptop cost about half what the MBPro did. It's about 6 months older. It's not as loaded. If you were to replace the HD in the HP laptop with the same capacity SSD that is in the MBPro and bump the memory up to 16GB the HP would still be less expensive than the MBPro by about 18%. The HP is plastic and aluminum with a display screen that's very sensitive to scratches and damage by pressure. The HP is not compatible with CS6's ray traced rendering or Mercury playback for PPro. There is an HP model that is though.
You be the judge. Balance your budget and the software requirements with the expectations of reliability, service, customer service, and resale value and make your choice.

  • Macbook pro retina 2013 broken rubber feet.

    Hi all,
The rubber feet on my 2013 macbook pro retina have worn away really badly and a couple have fallen off.
I tried a light glue to hold them back on but this only worked for a few weeks.
I have tried ebay for new cheap Chinese feet but they didn't have my model, purchased some anyway on the off chance they'd work anyway (what's a couple of dollars for such an annoying issue), no dice their centres were too tall so the feet don't make contact with the base (hard to explain, I guess the old models had a hole in the base the feet slotted into)
The online chat person said that apple doesn't sell the feet and that I'd need a whole new base plate... This is ridiculous they're sticky rubber feet! Does anyone have a beat on some after market "fake" feet that would fit my model properly?
I'm not entirely convinced this is caused by reasonable wear and tear, they wore really badly I've never had this issue with old macbooks but I guess arguing it's a manufacturing defect outside warranty is probably more trouble than it's worth.
    Thanks all .

I measured the diameter of the foot on my MBP and it is 16 mm.  I suggest that you measure the size on the retina MBP.  If it is the same, purchase the non retina ones and glue them in place.  Just on principle purchasing a bottom plate is absurd to replace one of the feet.  That was the case with the non retina MBPs a few years ago.
What you may need is a pentalobe driver to get the bottom plate off of the MBPr in order to properly install the foot.
    Ciao.

  • MacBook pro retina 15" V.10.8.3

I have MacBook pro retina 15" It was very fast everytime. When I update to 10.8.3, it hungs all the time and I can't work on it.
I never hered the sound of the fans and the computer was always cool. Now the fans running most of time and the computer very hot!
    what can I do?
I think I need another update to fix this problem !

    Do this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Next, download and install the OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.3 (Combo).

  • MacBook Pro Retina Scratched Coating. Even worse.

I love my MBPr. It's the best Mac I had since years and I'm working on Mac since System 6.
However I think it has a big problem, the coating is scratching. Initially it's appearing only along the borders, now it's appeared at the center of the display
I was cleaning it using a microfiber cloth and eventually a wiped it down with water.
Is it supposed to be a defective screen on a +2000$ machine?
Machine is out of the 2 years warranty so there are only few chances to get it repaired, at least without Apple officially recognize this kind of problem.
Anyone with the same problem? How much to change the display?

I'm in the exact same situation of you, same Macbook Pro retina (late 2013) and same bad coating..
It happens to my macbook under its first year (10 months after I bought it) and Apple refuse to repair it, they told me it's a aesthetic problem and not covered under the warranty.
I tried my best to make them understand the situation but after 6 senior advisor or similar levels and a lot of hours on telephone, I'm quite discouraged.

  • Severe Safari graphical glitches MacBook Pro Retina 15"

Hello. I have been having these annoying glitches since the day I bought my MacBook Pro Retina 15" on December 2012. These are not those almost invisible glitches present on the support topics currently. They are incredibly large, sometimes filling an entire webpage with a blank rectangle or parts from other pages (even tabs that were already closed).
I am absolutelly sure this is something to do with the crappy Intel HD Graphics 4000 board, because these gliches only occur while I am with the "Automatic graphics switching" option selected.
I have also noted this only happens on websites that use a lot of javascript animations.
    Let's put this in topics:
    The problem happens when:
Using automatic graphics switching (using Intel HD Graphics Board)
Using Safari 6.0.2 and Mac OS 10.8.2
Browsing websites with heavy javascript animations
    The problem disappears when:
NOT using graphics switching (using Nvidia board)
Using any other browsers (tried Chrome and Firefox)
What I have tried and did not fix my problem
    Fixing permissions
    Resetting the SMC
    Here are some examples:
And now some examples with the graphics switching off (Using the Nvidia board)
Any advice would be very welcome. Thank you for reading!

    Apple - Feedback
Have seen similar lines and artifacts on Safari on my 13" MBP.  It's a software bug and based on your additional findings, linked to bad drivers for the Intel 4000 chipset.  File your findings with Apple on that Feedback page for your respective system.  Make sure you provide all the info like you did here.  Someone will eventually see it and add it to the engineering things to fix if it hasn't already been addressed in the soon to be released 10.8.3 build.

  • Macbook pro retina 15 with win 7 in boot camp in games becomes hot and low graphics

hi i have macbook pro retina 15 and i installed win 7 with boot camp but when i want play games the first 2 minutes is good but the next minutes the macbook becomes very hot and graphics going very low i tried osx 10.8  but still not working. i tried command option shift power when mac is plugged in and off but still not working
does any one know solution of this problem??
    <Edited by Host>

    Hi All,
I tried this and it improved my FPS in games yesterday, still not getting FPS I would desire, but its become playable.
    Repasted here from another thread:
My retina MacBook Pro has had terrible graphics performance problems for a couple of weeks. I searched all over various forums and tried everything: resetting SCM, manually selecting discrete/integrated graphics card, deleting graphics kexts, etc. Nothing helped until I found this: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19880198#19880198
Now my rMBP has silky smooth graphics again!
The directions in that post are a little hard to understand so I cleaned them up here:
Step 1: Delete system windowserver preferences
In the Finder, from the menu bar, select "Go -> Go to Folder..."
    Enter: /Library/Preferences/
    Delete the file called com.apple.windowserver.plist
Step 2: Delete user windowserver preferences
In the Finder, from the menu bar, select "Go -> Go to Folder..."
    Enter: ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/
Delete all files that start with com.apple.windowserver   (On my rMBP, there was one file called com.apple.windowserver.12AFB147-95D6-5C70-8F62-C1E4F2BE81BE)
Step 3: Reset the PRAM    (These instructions are from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379)
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Hopefully this helps others with bad graphics performance on retina MacBook Pros.
For anyone that wants to check out the problematic plists from my rMBP, here are the files:

  • MacBook Pro Retina 13" fan very loud/overheats when playing full screen video/games

    Hi,
Just purchased a MacBook Pro Retina, refurbished (because why not - the same product for a cheaper price) around a month ago. It's the 13 inch and is the model before the most recent one came out (4GB of RAM instead of 8GB - late 2013). From the very first day, playing a full-screen video on any site (be it YouTube, Facebook, etc) just makes the fan much louder than usual (so loud that you can almost hear it more over the video itself). Thought it may have been just a thing with Flash Player being buggy, but the problem has persisted for a while now. I'm not even pushing the CPU to any limits - literally playing a full-screen video on Facebook (not even in HD) makes the fan go crazy.
Just last night I tried installing Borderlands 2 and it was the same thing - FPS rate was fine, no lag, just the fan was so loud that I actually got scared for my computer and turned it off. After closing the app and checking out the fan temperature, it was at 91c.
Never happens when browsing/surfing or doing my usual work.
Should I go give it back to Apple? The thing is I start university in less than a week (and hence will be traveling), so not sure if I can afford to give my laptop in to them for a long period of time (I know it should be free though since mine is a refurb item). May it just be an issue that is quickly repairable or is this worse?

During processor intensive activities—such as processing HD video or playing a game that makes extensive use of the graphics processor—the    fans speed up to provide additional airflow.
