Macbook pro retina LCD display vs. Retina Display

I got a Macbook pro retina mid-2012. But when I check the Displays, it says Built-in Color LCD Display (not Retina). Is my Mac actually Retina? Thank you.

That would indeed be a Retina display.

InDesign CS6 is not optimized for retina displays. You’ll need to move to Creative Cloud for retina compatibility.

  • Macbook Pro 15in mid 2012 Non-Retina Freeze

Macbook Pro 15in mid 2012 Non-Retina Freezes randomly. OSX 10.7.4. Do not have Google Chrome installed. I have to press the power button to restart. Any idea how to fix this?
When ever the computer restarts it looks like this:

I would like to share my experience with the random freezing on my brand new Retina MacBook Pro.
This may apply to non-Retina and MacBook Airs, too.
My rMBP had randome freezes; seemingly starting from Safari, then spreading to the whole system, refusing to launch programs, etc., forcing me to restart every 1-2 hours. There was just no other way to come out of this coma other than forced rebooting.
Tried all the usual recommended remedies, but nothing worked. It's been about 2 weeks like this.
Then I remembered from my past experiences that with every new hardware there seemed to be issues with graphics card/driver. I did the following and so far I havent' had a crash for 24 hours and counting.
    1. Turn OFF "automatic graphicss switching". You can do this in System Preference>Energy Saver. It's the top tick box. Untick for both AC Power and Battery Power.
    2. Turn OFF "automatically adjust brightness". System Preference>Displays.
Can't tell if it's the combination of the two or one effecting the other, but seems to work!
I have a feeling it's the "automatically adjust brightness" could be the culprit.

Run MDP to HDMI for picture. Use a cable like this to run sound from your audio out on your Mac to your TV's audio in.  That's about all  you can do.

  • Macbook Pro no longer support Apple Cinema Display after graphic update 1.0

I recently updated my system to ver. 10.5.2 and after that I updated to graphic system 1.0. After that my macbook pro began to have several problems dealing with my 23" Apple Cinema Display.
1- if started in 'closed lid' mode it gives me a kernel panic (shaded screen) error during start up
2- if started in 'open lid' mode it boots fine but whether i decide to close the lid it fails to wake from sleep mode. It starts for one or two seconds and then it gets back to sleep.
So, I made a long time taking test during the weekend and after several "archive and install" I found that this issue is related to the leopard graphic system update 1.0. Somehow this update mess up the way that macbook pro deals with my Apple Cinema Display.
I hope that someone at Apple will address this issue toward a solution in a short time.
I appreciate any other experience in this sense by anybody.
    Thank you for any reply.

    Virgin,
Check out the 'Apple Displays' forum and you'll find that you are not alone. MBP/Cinema Display relationship broken since graphics updater. Hopefully an Apple patch soon, or it's time for an Archive and Install w/o updating the graphics.

Your notebook computer must be awake to do what you want to do.
Get yourself a longer cable, or buy an Apple-TV box and do it wirelessly.

MacBook Pro doesn't detect tv as display when connected via Mini Display Port to HDMI adapter.

    Hi l,
Is it possible to try another adapter? There have been a number of posts here about faulty adapters. Also, have you checked in Display Preferences? Selected the proper input on the TV?

    Hi Bainze,
I would get the 15" Non Retina because of the 'anti-glare' option but in the end the decision is really up to you.

  • 13' MacBook Pro i5 dual core(non retina) vs 15' MacBook Pro i7 quad core(non retina)

I'm looking to buy a laptop, I'm going to use it for some photoshop, and daily use of excel,iTunes, web browsing, watch videos. The following laptops are which I'm looking at: 13' MacBook Pro i5 dual core(non retina) and 15' MacBook Pro i7 quad core(non retina). Please let me know what you suggest. I'm looking for a laptop to last me at least 5 years.

I'm trying to stick w/o having to buy the super drive and need a lot of memory to store so that's why the retina laptops didn't come to mind. I was looking at the refurbished section and apple is selling a (non retina) 15' MacBook Pro 4GB memory, 500GB hard drive, i7 quad core processor.

You could try updating your apple TV and then restarting it. Bit of a guess.

  • What display is more suitable for a macbook pro, an iMac or a Thunderbolt Display?

I am currently deployed in Afghanistan and will be purchasing a Macbook Pro upon my return. This will be my first time owning a mac as I have always been a Windows user so I am unaware of which product works the best with one another. I am curious to know though which display will work the best with a macbook pro; an iMac or a Thunderbolt Display? Any guidance or advice anybody could offer would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Both work very well with the MBP.
In essence the iMac is the ThunderBolt Display with an added Mac computer inside.
If you don't need a second Mac computer save the money, get the Display and invest the money in more RAm or a bigger harddisk for the MBP.

  • My non retina macbook pro mid 2012 will read the display its connected to but does not display anything at all

    Hi there,
I have a macbook pro mid 2012 non retina display and i tried using an external display for it. I hooked it up and the screen blacked out and turned back on like normal and the computer itself was reading that the display was there. The only problem is that on the display itself there is no image of the macbook being displayed. im using a thunderbolt to vga connector and all the connection check out the only problem is the display. the display works on my other macbook that i have just fine i dont understand why it wouldnt work on this new one. Keep in mind i have had this computer for only 5 days.
    Thanks in Advance

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that your MacBook is not working with your external display. display shows a blank screen.  Here is the best troubleshooting resource to go through when experiencing these symptoms.

  • Connecting Macbook Pro to LCD Display using MiniDVI to HDMI Cable

I currently use an LCD TV to play movies from my Macbook Pro via the MiniDVI - HDMI cable. At the moment I just connect everything up and then use the Mirror Display in the arrangement settings. So my laptop screen is the same as my LCD TV screen. What I want to be able to do though is watch the movie on the LCD TV and also use the laptop to go on the internet, is this possible???

Yes. Turn off mirroring in the "Arrangement" tab of "Displays" system preference.
