MacBook Pro Retina - LG vs. Samsung 2013 Model

Hi, I was curious as to how to check whether a display was made by LG or Samsung. I've read extensive posts on this matter and everyone seems to say to input the following code unto the Terminal app: ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6.
However, whenever I input it, nothing shows up. I am not sure if there was a new one that I would need to type in seeing as how the laptop that I am using is part of the new 2013 models. I called AppleCare and they seemed to be oblivious regarding this matter. The customer representative denied any claims, insisted that she had never heard of such things, and went as far as to say that her senior advisors were not aware of the issue either. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I do not want to make a heavy investment on something that might malfunction somewhere down the road. Thanks in advance!

Yes, failure is a matter of probabilities. The QC studies manufacturers perform to assess these probabilities have much to do with the length of time they warrant their products, but more importantly assess the likely cost of repairs and losses over a give products expected lifetime. You can adjudge that by looking at the state MTBF stats the company can make available. Still the probabilities follow a normal curve which means some items may last longer than the MTBF and some will not. You are just as likely to get the one as the other - that being the nature of normal curves.
That a lawsuit is going on may have little or nothing to do with your question. Nor would "numerous" returns because what you buy may contain a different display - one unaffected by any problems should there actually be any problems.
Given this I would say you have all the answers to your question you are likely to find except for the MTBF data. That would be found at the display mfgr.'s website. You will need to know the model number of the display.

  • Fan like noise - Macbook Pro Retina 13 inch - late 2013 model

If I open Frontline Commando (game app) my brandnew Mackbook pro make fan like noise. (annoying and scary) Could anyone advice please?
    my sys configuration:
Model - Macbook Pro Retina 13 inch - late 2013 model
    RAM - 8 GB
    Processor - 2.4 GHz intel core i5
    OS - OS X 10.9.1

Normal during gaming use, fan noise.
A: you notice it more in a quiet room (the typical case) which is normal, all is AOK
B: fuzz and dust has caked onto the blades causing the fan hub to get off balance and make a buzzing sound.
C: fan rotor is going bad and making a whirring or buzz noise (rare).
D: Fan is spinning up due to excess heat from gaming, heavy graphics gaming (typical, all is OK)
    A and D are normal
    B and C are not.

  • Only one of my fans are working on my macbook pro retina 13 inch late 2013 model. Is something wrong?

It appears that only one of my fans are working on my macbook pro with retina display 13 inch late 2013 model. Is some thing wrong? if so how can i fix it?

To my knowledge there is only one fan on all 13" Mac notebooks, Retina or standard screen. Not enough space for a second fan and no Discrete GPU to cool.
    So nothing is wrong.

  • I own a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013) with a 500 GB Apple SSD SM0512F (Revision UXM2JA1Q).

I own a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013) with a 500 GB Apple SSD SM0512F (Revision UXM2JA1Q). I’d like to replace this original SSD with a Samsung SSD 840 EVO 1TB. Am I going to encounter problems in trying to remove & replace the SSDs? That is, are they the same type of SSD, with same connection?
I plan to have a "tech" do the actual work inside the MacBook Pro, but I'd like to know if the current SSD can be easily replaced with the Samsung SSD 840 EVO?
Please note that I am so "green" that I'm not even sure if this provides adequate information to answer my question!

it's not possible to replace your SSD with 840 EVO.
Samsung 840 EVO is a standard 2.5" drive with SATA connector, while Retina MacBooks use proprietary "stick" form-factor with PCI Express interface.
AFAIK, there are no compatible PCIe SSDs on the market, the only upgrades you'll find are for earlier (2012) Retina MacBook Pros which use SATA.
If you're looking for extra capacity, external USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt HDD/SSD is the best option.

    Hi Connorsimone,
Thanks for the question. It sounds like you are experiencing issues with your MacBook Pro unexpectedly restarting (kernel panic). The following resource provides information on Kernal Panics, as well as troubleshooting steps for recurring kernel panics:

  • Keyboard and Multi-Touch trackpad may become unresponsive on MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)

    Folks,
I have exacly same sympton described here on my 5 day old 15 inc macbook pro.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5296
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013): Keyboard and Multi-Touch trackpad may become unresponsive
Has anone tried to apply this patch on 15 inc ?
    Kind Regards,
    Neroshige

The patch is only for MBP late 2013 13 inch. 15 inch is not able to install this patch
    I'm facing this problem intermittently.
When my keyboard & trackpad went unresponsive, I plug in my USB keyboard and the keyboard & trackpad went back normal.
I search the web and somebody highlight it may due to connector to keyboard/trackpad appear to be curled.
Not sure is hardware problem or software bug...

  • MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) LEFT USB PORT DISFUNTION

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) : Constantly disconnected and reconnected from my iPhone while using the left USB port. Is this a rare accident?

If the iPhone works correctly on the other port, then the fault lies within the MBP.  Bring it in for service.
    Ciao.

If your MBP is under warranty, bring it to an Apple store and have the technicians fix it.  If not, try the steps in this support article:

  • MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2013) Storage

    Hi all,
I am using MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2013). Base on its spcification [http://support.apple.com/kb/SP668?viewlocale=en_US], it's configurable to 512GB or 768GB flash storage.
My corrent storage is 256GB, and I want to upgrade it.
Is there one more free slot or it need to be replaced with my old SSD???
    Thnanks,

You need to replace the flash storage. Note that the MacBook Pro with Retina display comes with flash storage because a SSD doesn't fit on it.
I recommend you to get an external drive and store the files there instead of replacing the flash storage, which is expensive and will void warranty

  • Broken screen of MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013). Where I can find the part?

I have a broken screen for MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) and I cannot find a replacement. Where I can find the screen? I will install myself. Thanks

Apple does not sell replacement parts, any you find will be third-party knockoffs.  Take your Retina to an Apple store genius bar and have the techs tell you what  needs to be done.  New Retina screens are not cheap, they normally replace the entire lid as a unit.

  • What logic board in macbook pro retina 15-inch late 2013?

    hi
the logic board in my macbook pro retina 15-inch, late 2013 died within warrenty...
is there any way i can see what logic board my old logic board have been replaced with in 'about this mac' (or elsewhere)?
i have a suspicion that my mac is now using battery faster than before! could there be a relation?
    regards

    Ciao.

  • Connecting Dell u2715h Monitor to Macbook Pro Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013

I recently purchased the Dell UltraSharp 27 Monitor U2715H to work as a second monitor with my Macbook Pro Retina 15-inch (late 2013).
What connection cables do I need to make this work most effectively?

    Hi,
I bought the same monitor. I will receive it next week, but i read some blogs about the best alternatives for getting the 2560x1440 and my first option will be connecting my macbook pro retina 13' using the thunderbolt (mini-display port) to the mini-display port available in the monitor.
    I'm planning using this cable:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD862ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-cable-05-m
A mini-reference about the mini-display port (It was useful for me):
Apple Mini DisplayPort adapters: Frequently asked questions (FAQ) - Apple Support
This is what I'm planning to do. Note that I don't know if it works! I think so, but I don't know. I will tell you if it works next week.
If you have a mini-display port to display port cable it should work too.
    Regards,
    Carlos.

  • TS5296 MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013): Keyboard and Multi-Touch trackpad unresponsive

Brand new Macbook PRO Retina 15inch. (1 day old) Running 10.9
    EFI 1.2 installed.
Keyboard/trackpad hangs when using the left USB.
The EFI update 1.3 apparently fixes this issue for the 13inch macbook pro.
I have a 15inch macbook pro. The EFI update 1.2 does not resolve this issue for me.
Whenever I plug something into the left USB, after the 2nd or 3rd time, the keyboard and trackpad become unresponsive. To get the keyboard/trackpad back again, I must restart the machine.
This is what the consol says:
    Nov 12 11:29:56 leaf kernel[0]: AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::_deviceSetReport - DeviceRequest returned error 0xe000404f (interface 1, reportID 0xac, payload 2
Nov 12 11:29:56 leaf kernel[0]: AppleUSBMultitouchDebug: _deviceSetReport returned an error in configureDataMode
    Nov 12 11:29:56 leaf kernel[0]: AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::_deviceSetReport - DeviceRequest for reportID 0xac returned with result 0xe000404f - retrying
I cannot install the EFI update 1.3 as I get an alert "This software is not supported on your system." I assume because it was made only for the 13inch.
Is this a hardware or firmware issue? If it's only firmware, why does this issue only affect some users? If it's hardware, should I just return this macbook?

I can reproduce the behavior at will. I just have to plug in the tablet on the left USB board, reboot the tablet, disconnect the cable and reconnect. At that moment the trackpad and keyboard will both freeze.
This is the complete sequence of console logs I have

Disconnecting the tablet doesn't resolve the issue. A reboot does. I still have to try if the workaround posted by Apple for the MBP-13 Late 2013 (close the lid and reopen after a few minutes) would work here too.

  • Hello, I'm using a Macbook Pro Retina 13 inch Late 2013. Is the HDMI output revision 2.0 or 1.4a? Thank you all!

Just as the header states, Is the HDMI output on my macbook pro retina 13 inch the 2.0 version or the 1.4a version? Thank you!

I'm asking this because, hdmi 2.0 allows 4K output at 60hz (right?) versus 30hz for HDMI 1.4a. I might connect another 4K display to my mac in the forseable future.

  • Is it possible to upgrade ram for a MacBook Pro Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013

I own a MacBook Pro 13- inch late 2013 model and wanted to upgrade my memory, but i have read online that this is not possible as the ram is soldered onto the board . Could someone please give me a clarification on this?

    This is correct...
MacBook Pro with Retina display comes standard with 4GB of 1600MHz memory. Please note that the memory is built into the computer, so if you think you may need more memory in the future, it is important to upgrade at the time of purchase.
