Macbook Pro Retina or Not? the big dilemma!

I know this question has probably been answered here in the Apple community (and over the internet) multiple times, but I am going to ask it anyways. The response to this looks half in half i.e. half of the responses lean towards a Regular MBP whereas the other half leaning towards the Retina and that is making this decision for me quite difficult.
I am currently a Regular 13" MBP (i7, 8g, 750 gig) mid 2012 user and I have used a late 2010 model in the past and never did I have any complains about those machines. However, with the new Retina models and SSD options I am a bit confused. I am a pretty decent user who uses work apps like Oracle (DB) Clients, Citrix, Adobe PS CS6, Full MS Office suite of products etc. I also use it for recreational things like watching movies, iTunes library (currently about 20 gigs, which is not too large) and store music, movies, videos and pics in the computer from time to time. I don't foresee having have to install any large applications in the future but that may not always be the case since I work in the IT industry and things are pretty dynamic here. I have an inclination towards the Retina MBP 13" with 256 gig SSD, however this SSD size seems a little low to me. Not that I have 200 gigs worth of apps installed but I would hate to run out of space if that situation arrived. I know I can have an external HD but I would still want to have the apps installed in the computer's storage. I have also explored the fact that I can have a Regular MBP with SSD but I am not sure if those machine can handle at true SSD speeds or will they be stuck with ATA speeds anyways which kind of defeats the purpose of having an SSD. Budget is also a consideration here since the max I can shell out would be $1700-ish.
I know Retina display is more as a personal preference than a requirement, but do you guys think that 256 GB SSD would be enough or 512 GB SSD with a non Retina model (since budget is a concern) would be the way to go?
I am thinking of rMBP with 256 G SSD but with that Price I can get a 15" Regular MBP with more HDD space.
Please share your opinions.

If budget is a concern, max out a 15" with a SSD, 16gig RAM and a few peripherals along with a couple 2TB 2.5" USB external Hard drives.
Applications are never the concern when it comes to an internal SSD or HD,....... its the huge videos/ pdf / music / pics etc etc people want to throw into the internal HD AFTER they put every application known to mankind on their internal HD.
Endless applications is one thing even a 128gig SSD is more than fit to handle, its all the huge files.
Keep working working files / docs etc ON the internal, and park all low use stuff OFF onto a USB HD.
Are you planning on doing any major photo or video editing?  You didnt indicate same,...as such other than resolution for as you mention "watching movies" is your prime use/intent for the Retina vs. non-Retina?

Either the power brick is damaged, or the charging circuit is on the blink, or both. Either way, a trip to the Apple Store or the Apple Authorized Service Provider is in order, as this ain't no bargain basement toy.
In the meantime, can attempt an SMC Reset to see if it helps.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 13" w/ 128GB big enough?!?

Hey guys, I just purchased a Macbook Pro Retina 13" at the size of 128GB. I couldn't afford the next size up due to the fact that their already at retail of about $2000 with Applecare. I need to know if I need an external hardrive (if available, I really don't know because I'm a first mac owner) or some type of Card or USB to hold data.
Now, I'm using my laptop for multiple things such as the usual: Facebook, Social Networks, Email, iTunes, Skype, iPhoto (not too many photos), Safari, also Minecraft which I don't think will take to much space up, and stuff like that. Mainly though, I purchased this laptop for video editing software. I'm going to be using iMovie a lot. I can delete some of my footage after I upload it to Youtube if I don't have enough space. I mean I won't be downloading to many things from the internet. I just will have a lot of songs and videos.
Obviously I need to know if there's a way to add more space to the mac if it doesn't have enough space, and whether or not I have enough SPACE! Please reply with detailed answers.
    Thanks!
    Justin

If you buy an external drive, say about 1GB (for a low as $100 if you shop around), then you can partition it to hold a Time Machine backup of your internal as well as use the remaining space for storing your documents, photos, movies, etc.
I think you'll be just fine with 128GB - I have a 512GB SSD and if I were to put my 178GB of music on an external, I would have about 300GB free: all of my apps, documents, etc., really only take up about 200GB. Keep you system (naturally) and your apps on your 128GB drive and everything else on that partitioned external. You can even keep your iMovie footage on the external. But do partition it so that you have at least 256GB dedicated to a Time Machine partition - backups are important.
Good luck - I'm sure that you'll enjoy your new machine.

  • Macbook Pro retina will not turn on

I bought a 2012 Macbook Pro Retina 13" off Craigslist today.  It will not turn on.  I tried resetting the SMC and disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it.  It will still not turn on, the battery has been charging for 2 hours already and it's still amber on the magsafe.  It still has warranty coverage until 2014 so my next stop is the apple store.  I thought I could fix it myself but it is pretty tough to narrow down the cause.

I tried those already, did not work.
I did how ever remove the command key and wiped it down and it turns on perfectly!
but now the keyboard keys seem to be out of place or something. For example it makes a "ping" sound when i hit some of them, when i hit function or control it puts the letter Z.
    Any input would be great!

  • HT201364 just purchased new macbook pro retina and not able to download osx mavericks.is this problem common?

I have just purchased a new macbook pro retina and I am unable to download OSX Mavericks.I would be grateful of any help with this.

The available download is not able to boot your Mac because of the newer hardware in that Mac. When Apple releases an update that has the necessary drivers, you should be able to download it.
The versions provided in Recovery will be able to boot your Mac if you need to reinstall.

  • Late 2013 13" Macbook Pro Retina Out of the Box Condition

I have just purchased my LAte 2013 Macbook Pro Retina 13" 2.6Ghz i5 512 Gb. Out of the box, it won't boot because there is no charge in it, and the keys feel a little less tactile, a littile stiff than the one on my Late 2012 Macbook Pro Retina. Also when the Macbook Pro finally booted up(after i plugged in the mag safe adaptor) I checked the battery status and there is already 3 charge cycles on it. Are these normal for an expensive Macbook Pro out of the box?
    Thanks!

Whether any previously built Mac notebook of any model came out of the box with a charge in the battery doesn't mean currently manufactured unit will or does. There have been several posts on these forum about the newest units not having a battery charge. I suspect there are many more units then are represented on these forum simply because most people would actually connect the AC charger as the first step in setting up a new computer and then you have others that don't think anything about it.
Who said the battery was Discharged Deeply. Just being at 0% of a charge doesn't mean it ws Deeply Discharged. Sure it isn't the best thing to do once the battery has been charged fully to constantly discharge it to 0%.
The battery has built in circuitry
Since this is the second brand new system you have had that has come like this, and many other it seems, I would say it is normal for the newly built systems.

  • Macbook Pro Retina battery not charging

Hello, when I loaded up my Macbook pro Retina today (4 months old) I noticed the battery wasn't charging and the power logo says power source: adaptor, I have tried SMC reset but that hasn't fixed the problem, need some advice as to what to do now?
    Thanks
    Ben

What % is the battery at?  If it's at 95% and above, it won't charge.  It must get lower to charge.  If it was lower than that and it won't charge no matter what, you'll need to contact AppleCare because you can't service that laptop yourself for this issue if it is a bad battery.

  • How good is macbook pro compared to 13" macbook pro retina and is the macbook pro has haswell processor and  will I get further updates if I buy macbook pro without retina

I do not know what you mean by that. Any currently produced Mac is likely to be supported for as long as every other Apple product that has ever been produced. Most Apple products are relegated to "vintage" status approximately six years after which they are discontinued by Apple, meaning that the non-Retina MBP is likely to be supported through 2020.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 2013 not waking from sleep

    Hi all,
My brand new 15" Retina Macbook Pro (late 2013) is not waking from sleep. It doesn't occur after a short sleep (as I can wake it as normal by moving my mouse), but if the sleep is for some extended duration (not exactly sure, but at least within a couple of hours) then the only way to wake it is to use the power button.
I've tried an SMC reset to no avail -- the problem still occurs.
It's plugged into a power adapter and this is a screenshot of the settings page.
This is a very annoying issue. I'm hoping someone can help?
    Thanks!
    Adam

I managed to narrow down and reproduce the issue:
It occurs when the 'turn display off after' time lapses. Eg, if I change the setting to 1 minute and wait for the display to turn off, the computer will *not* wake up without pressing the power button.
Very strange. Hoping someone can provide some insight!
    Thanks,
    Adam

  • MacBook Pro retina trackpad not working

I purchased a MacBook pro with retina display two days ago and today the trackpad is not working. The mouse will not move or click. Everything else appears to be working correctly. I am using the 15" model if that makes any difference. Please let me know if there is something simple I am missing as I am a new Mac user and have minimal experience with these computers

Any hardware related issues should be brought to the attention of Apple.

  • Is the SSD in the 15" MacBook Pro Retina compatible with the 13" MacBook Pro Retina?

A friend upgraded his Retina MacBook Pro 15" from 256GB to an OWC 480GB SSD.  He was going to sell me the 256GB SSD he pulled out of his rMBP.  I was thinking of buying the base 13" rMBP and installing that 256GB SSD from the 15" rMBP.  Will that work or are they not compatible.  Eyeballing it, they look to be exactly the same size so physically it would fit but not sure if they are not compatible for other reasons.

none of what you mentioned - use a damp micro fibre cloth to wipe your macbook retina.
make sure it's damp and not wet.
using a wet cloth can cause some drips between the keys that might create an issue - so make sure it's just damp.

  • Original Macbook Pro Retina 15 not connecting to wifi after sleep

When Waking from sleep, it searches for wifi and finds it but doesn't connect most of the time. i click/select the network manually & sometimes it connects but iv ended up resorted to turning wifi off, then turn back on & it finds the network (it found earlier) AND connects to it automatically. this problem happens on other wifi's aswell, not just my home wifi.
Wondering why it can find the network after sleep, but doesn't want to connect to it. All my ios devices, my sisters MBP retina 13 connects perfectly. I've come to conclusion it must be my computer....

I to have this problem. I have a late 2013 Macbook Pro 13inch with Retina display. I soon discovered on my machine that if you disable Bluetooth then the macbook connects to the wi-fi as it should. I dont have a problem on my home network with any other apple devices and the connectivity issue is the same on what ever network I try. I soon realised that if I disabled Bluetooth the machine connects perfectly everytime. There is clearly a bug or some technical issue that occurs preventing wi-fi connection when you have Bluetooth enabled. Try it and see if it is teh same with yours?
I was hopeing that the fault or issue would be fixed with the latest OX update but alas it is still an issue for me on my machine. I have just taken to switching Bluetooth to off until I am connected and then just turn Bluetooth on if I need it.
Hopeing that some kind of fix will be issued soon.
Let me know if this Bluetooth issue is the cause of the issue as I woudl be interested.
    Best wishes.

  • Macbook Pro retina or not ?

    hi
so i want to be a graphic designer but i dont know which of those is better,i know i will use photoshop a lot, illustrator..  i dont want to spend a lot of money on a computer or shoul i get a pc ? which is better

I don't recommend the MacBook Pro with Retina display unless you need a light computer and a high resolution display. That's because near all of the parts of the MacBook Pro with Retina display are soldered, so repairs will be expensive (the logic board must be replaced) and you won't be able to upgrade anything except the flash storage.
Now, the MacBook Pro without Retina display has got near the same hardware as the MacBook Pro with Retina display but with less resolution. The advantage is that you can upgrade the memory and the hard drive without voiding the warranty, so it will be useful for you for more time. You should get the 15-inch MacBook Pro because you are going to use heavy apps that the graphic card of the 13-inch MacBook Pro can't run
