Macbook Pro Retina Overheating - Sims 3

I have a Macbook Pro Retina 2.6ghz 16gb and I'm running the Sims 3 on Bootcamp.  I can run skyrim fine on ultra settings without any heating or noisy fans.  However, when i run Sims 3 the fans get real noisy and the whole laptop gets really hot.  Also during gameplay it lags to the point where its not playable.
Any advice?
Thanks,

go to utilities> activity monitor and look at the percentage of computer used in running "the Sims" program
if this is greater than 50% then it is a very intense computing program(even if it may seem otherwise)
It may also be a program running in the background(Time Machine, Skyrim, Lots of internet webpages open).  If this is the case try to close those programs SAFELY, and then allow the computer to restart. this may allow the ram to be cleared, thus improving performance and reducing heat.
it ma also be where you are placing the computer, because if you are placing it on a carpet/blankets/cushion it may have blocked the cooling fan.
try moving it to a solid surface(table, desk, ect)
ps I believe the app Temperature Gauge would be in your interest to purchase( it's great with veiwing the laptops' individual temperatures to see where the problem lies)
Hope this helped you

  • MacBook Pro Retina Overheating

I have a 13" MacBook Pro Retina Late 2013 with 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5, 16 GB RAM, and 512 GB flash storage.
Recently I have noticed the laptop gets super hot in the top right corner near the power button, and the fan really gets loud. This happens when I am doing nothing else, but watching a tv show online. I even took my hard shell case off and have my macbook elevated slightly to try to have better airflow, and this still happens. I don't recall this happening months ago even when running more programs at once. Is this normal or might there be some issue here?

I am having this same problem, and it just started recently.  Macbook Pro Retina Late 2013, i5, 4gb RAM, 128gb SSD.
The same area that jtb283 mentioned gets really hot when I use Firefox or Chrome and watch Youtube videos.  It seems to be Flash related, however it doesn't happen when I use Safari.
    Looking forward to any answers/solutions.

  • Why is my new Macbook Pro retina overheating? problems with new update

Hello everyone i know this question has been asked but with the new updates and all i bought a brand new macbook pro 13 inch retina and i had it only for 3 days and its over heating like crazy i just do google searches and youtube thats it! and i feel the top of my keyboard so hot! and sometimes safari lags a whole bunch it usually freezes or doesnt load or the the page freezes when try to swip back on the pad.
everything esle works fine its just safari
is it the latest update or is it my mac?
    any advice or tips please

Watching YouTube videos can really heat up your computer - that's just a given that everyone experiences. If I do nothing but watch YouTube videos, my MacBook Pro really heats up and the fans go up almost beyond the supposed 'high' of the fans (6202rpms).
You have 14 days in which you can return the machine you purchased for another machine or a full refund. Since you've some time left, I would first download and install iStat Menus 4 for the trial period so you can let us know what your actual temps are and how fast your fan is running. Post that information and we'll be able to tell you if you're in 'normal' operating range.
    Call back,

  • Sims 3 - 15" Macbook Pro Retina Display

    Hello All,
I plan on buying a Macbook Pro Retina and i was just curious on how well it runs Sims 3.

It will run fine. However something's will be a bit odd. For one, if you set the game to retina resolution everything will be very, very tiny. The computer will heat up noticeably, and the fans will shift up to maximum speed. However none of this really affects game play, and doesn't have much affect on the end user, so to answer your question it will be fine.

  • Macbook pro Retina Late 2013 Overheating problems

I just bought a Macbook Pro Retina 15 inches, 2.3, 512 last week. I just ran skype and nothing else, the temperature went upto 95 degrees celsius. The problem is it never comes down. I dont do anything except skype and facebooking and the temperatures are going really crazy (never below 95 degrees C). Its just impossible to touch the top part of the keyboard leave aside putting this LAPtop on my LAP. I am really wondering if spending 2700 euros on this computer was worth it? This is my first Mac and I was kinda expecting a flawless computer but . Please help me out guys, what should I do?

I am using MacBook Pro Retina(Mid-2012, bought new) 2.6 Ghz CPU since several months, CPU temps go upto 104 C on my Mac but it is normal as per CPU specs provided by intel, In your case Max CPU T junction temp allowed is 100 C , You may have either CPU listed below.
There is absolutley no problem with your MacBook Pro, so dont worry & do not waste your time.
(I am writing this post while Handbrake video converting CPU temp 104 C)

  • Macbook Pro Retina 15, Stop bluetooth device during file I/O on Bootcamp Windows7

    Hi.
My Macbook pro Retina 15, Stop magic mouse & apple bluetooth keyboard during some file copy local folder or usb storege or nas on bootcamp windows7 pro 64bit.
I called apple korea. but they don't have answers. also It base on bootcamp windows, they can't support me
It only occure on my macbook pro retina on bootcamp. only bluetooth devices not own keyboard or touchpad.
    My iMac(2009late) does not problem.
Yesterday I clean setup bootcamp again, It still problem.
I just guess some bootcamp driver problem at ssd or bluethooth. Mac OS also OK.
First time I got new ratina, no problem. nothing to chaged. just update collectly.
Anybody help or same problem here?
    Thanks

I should point out, this happens with/without peripherals attached.. ILOK dongle was disconnected at the time of crash. I will however check for updates..
I have found somthing interesting tho - as it's out of warranty I downloaded a fan controller and forced the fans to full speed... The MacBook played video for hours, no problems. I believe this is a overheating issue because they fans just do to turn spin fast enough without being forced... Or it could be dust?
I'm going to have Genius Bar clean it out if the will?.,.

  • 13" macbook pro retina mifi compatibilty

    Hi,
Early this year, I purchased a 13" Macbook Pro Retina (8GB RAM, 256GB HDD). I am currently using OSX 10.8.5 and will upgrade to Mavericks soon.
I will be taking this to India for the first time over the Holiday season. I was looking to buy a 3G dongle for internet connectivity but read in the Communities that the softwares for dongles are generally poor. They are recommending to use a mifi hotspot instead.
When I go to other sites for buying mifi hotspots, rarely do I see whether the mac can work on it or not.
Hence, I am asking for your views and advice on this.
Which mifi hotspot would work with my macbook as well as another Windows 7 laptop? I would prefer to buy an unlocked one so that I can use 3G/4G wherever I go by simply installing a local SIM.
    Let me know your thoughts.
    Raj

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Apple won't add RAM because they have to replace the logic board, and you will have to pay for a very expensive repair, as it's not covered by warranty. In this case, it's better to sell your current MacBook Pro and get another one with the RAM you think you will need. This is very important on a MacBook Pro with Retina display, as you can't change anything after purchasing it without voiding warranty

Your machine is rather new and thus under the one year warranty.
I would highly suggest you purchase AppleCare for a additional two more years of coverage.
Have your vent fins behind the fans cleaned annually.
The MacBook Pro's are NOT 3D gaming machines, you are substantially contributing to it's early death by playing intensive 3D games on laptop machines which are not designed to handle it.
The Retina's are the worst, because it gives you 3D performance which heats the machine up, but also inhales more dust than normal non-3D gaming operations and the exhaust port vents can't be cleaned by the user. Which dust eventually blocks the cooling fins and hot air can't escape the machine properly.
The video chip gets overheated and dies prematurely depending how much 3D activity is generated.
If your a serious 3D gamer, then you really need to consider using a Windows 7 3D gaming tower instead.
You can get video card upgrades, use multiple video cards, clean the dust out and also perform video driver and other updates to improve performance.
What is up with 3D gaming on Mac's?

  • Macbook pro Retina 15" a/c power connector melting

    hello everyone!
not sure if anyone can assist here and have knowledge of past experience or even apple support calls resolution about my issue with my Macbook pro retina 2012 model --- the magnetic power connector from the magsafe 2 is overheating and has burned out 2 out of 5 pins on the connector itself and 2 of the laptop one i can clearly see them black and all burned out. this means the power to the laptop is now inconsistent and i have to giggle withe the adaptor to find the right position and once i do the light goes from green to orange after a few attempts --- but then the connect gets really hot ( as much as i can not touch it again )
    question:
the laptop is out of warranty --- this seems to me a fault or a unique issue with this machine a/c power would it be looked at by apple support as a special out of warranty?
if not what would be the costs of repairing both he magsafe 2 (i have bought one now on the web ) and repairing the laptop power connection to ensure it does not happen again and burns out the machine or even god forbid it catches fire?
    regards

Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 15" Getting Very Hot

My macbook pro retina display 15 inch intel i7, 512gb flash hard drive 16 gb computer is getting hot. When playing a simple flash game like pocket planes (not in fullscreen), and without the battery plugged in, the computer gets to 64 degrees celsius, and the area near the battery plug location gets extremely hot to the touch. While playing youtube videos and such, the computer also gets hot, but generally reaches around 48 degrees, and it will not cool further. Is this normal? I just bought it 3 days ago and the salesperson told me that it would not get as hot as the 13 inch late 2012 macbook pro. Any ideas? Because it is very similar as heat, even though the older model was hotter.

I have the similar issue on my MBP 15" 2012. The top left corner area gets very hot after watch video for a little while.
I think it's the video card that is overheated. My current solution is to use a laptop cooler underneath my MBP. It does help reduce the lock ups in daily uses.
Does any one know how to fix it?

  • How do you select the turbo boost 3.06ghz option on the new macbook pro retina display

I was wondering how to get the turbo boost option on the 2012 Retina Display Macbook Pro of 3.06ghz for the processer ???? Need help

You don't select it as an option when using the macbook, it just happens when the system needs more speed. Also if you think you're macbook pro is "overheating" while you're using it, it really isn't because it would come up with a heat warning if it was overheating. Your mac will tell you when its running out of spec so when it gets dangerously hot, you will know.

  • MacBook Pro Retina Display freezes

15" MacBook Pro Retina display has started to freeze, "flutter" and crash. After I power off, and try to power back on, there is a "beep" which sounds ominously similar to an "error" beep on a PC. Anyone else had this occur? MacBook is less than 9 months old.

I never had this issue until now. My laptop was working alright, but I noticed ghosting, then I realized that it was overheating and on rare occasions it would freeze. But I never got a white screen saying: Your computer restarted because of an error
neither did I before have this beeping and crashing. It all happened after they switched the motherboard..
I am in Israel, and when I took my laptop in to change the motherboard they said it would take them 10 working days. I can't go without a laptop for that long, I'm a student, and I use my laptop for work as well... Aren't they supposed to give me a replacement or something for that time? I don't understand how the think to take so much money for a computer then not even provide a replacement computer, especially for such a high-end, professional piece of equipment..

  • Macbook Pro Retina Display MAXIMUM temperature?

What is the MAXIMUM CPU and GPU ( each individually ) temperature for the Macbook Pro Retina Display before it shuts down as a result of overheating?, an exact number if you would know.
And what is another app that can control the fans speed other than SMC FanControl and Speed Fan? ( One that ACTUALLY makes the computer obey the RMP you adjust ).
And finally, does Mountain Lion 10.8.1 consume more power and heat it more than other OS's ?
I know all about how the Mac itself knows how to manage the fans and all that, I just need the answers to those questions.
    Thanks

    JoeyR wrote:
I'm guessing he meant "RPM" and made a typo...
Perhaps; we'll have to wait and see.
But since his concern appears to be overheating (as is mine), I don't think he wants to slow the fans down.
I have found that if an older Mac is migrated to a newer Mac, the preference file may need to be either hacked or deleted and recreated to get the fan speed settings to behave properly. Perhaps that's what's going on.
