MacBook Pro Retina power supply is surprisingly hot

The power brick seems to get a lot hotter than my previous MacBook Pro power supplies. Anyone else noticing this?

Just got my new 2013 retina MPB, and the powersupply is charging the battery in the MPB at an amazing rate (faster than 1% per minute) but holy Hephaestus batman that power brick gets lava-hot.
This is my 10th Mac laptop (personal) and none of the other power supplies have ever heated up like this.  Other Mac laptop power supplies got very hot but never too hot to touch.  This retina power supply, at the temp it was at earlier today, would cause burns if left on skin.  So hot I am concerned about the plastic melting. Will check but I would not be surprised if when all the lights are off there isn't a slight glow to this lava powered adaptor.
My retina seems to love it and it does not get hot in the least.  As i typed this message, the charge went from 40% to 67%. (freekin awesome) and the power supply is very warm but hot yet.
I cannot help but wonder if this is not related to the powersupply on house wiring with the reversed phase...  My brick does not get hot all the time and not everywhere I plug it in.

  • Logic X on Macbook Pro Retina... "feeling hot, hot"?

I recently made an impulse purchase on a Macbook Pro Retina 2.7Ghz Quad core i7, in order to ease my transition to Logic X & Pro Tools 11. I figured with a Flash drive & 16Gb of memory that this would be a nice quiet machine... but unfortunately no. I'm quite shocked at how HOT these i7 processors run - in idle mode, the machine ticks over at 41c (istat menus), but as soon as you load a blank project in Logic X & press play, the machine ramps up to 92-93c. Consequently the fans kick in to an annoying level... & don't subside until you quit Logic. The Macbook has even touched 100c - which seems pretty hot, considering thermal shutdown is 110c. (I'm following all the guidelines on keeping the machine well ventilated, & only running it with the power supply).
I've read many similar posts in other parts of the apple forum, but I'm interested in anybody else's experiences with Logic X on a Macbook Pro Retina. Is this behaviour normal, or do I have a lemon?!! Benchmarks are impressive for the machine : 64 tracks vs 30 on my 2006 Mac Pro (Quad 3.0ghz/10.6.8/Logic 9.1.8). http://www.evan.se/logicprobenchmark/Logic_Multicore_Benchmark_Test.html
Another word of warning on Thunderbolt... it's very expensive, & you'll need it for practically everything. Once you've added a hub, cables & all the various adapters you'll need (firewire, ethernet, DVI, etc), your looking at the best part of £375/$600.... & that's not even including a thunderbolt 7200 rpm Hard Drive (£250 minimum). Sadly there's very few thunderbolt devices (apart from high end Raid HD's) that have more than one port, so daisy-chaining is not an option, & a hub is essential. Worse still, the current maximum length for thunderbolt is 3m which makes it very difficult to place a noisy mac or hard drive in another room. The new Mac Pro may be the quietest computer on the planet, but what's the point if you can't get hard drives out of earshot? (There are apparently fibre-optic versions in the pipeline that will exceed these lengths, but when?)
So folks... opinions - is your Macbook Pro Retina whisper quiet with Logic? Mine might have to go back...

    Hi Mate,
I've got a non-retina MBP i5, and it's not behaving like that, so no way should yours be.  Can't hear it at all until it really comes under load.  But even then it's relatively quiet.  Quite concerning that it's happening to you with nothing loaded up.
Something is obviously taking up cpu power just by having the audio engine running, have you checked OSX Activity monitor and checked where your processor(s) are being used?
Also, check your audio options and make sure the audio buffer isn't set ridiculously low.
Agree that Apple expansion options are expansive - However, at least they're working on getting the software reduced, Logic X being an example of that.

  • MacBook Pro (MC118) power supply problem

    Hello.
I have MacBook Pro (MC118). I'm using two power supply (home, work).
Yesterday I noticed, that macbook does not charging up. So i decided that my power supply is broken. Found another at work (from my old macbook) and used it.
But when I got home and tried to use power supply (original supply that comes with my MBP) I was surprised. It doesn't work at all.
So today I tried another power supplies at work (from few other MPB) and they all doesn't charging my MPB!
And now I have only one power supply, that actually can charge my battery.
What is wrong with my MPB?
    Thanks!

Yes, it's strange! Only one charger works for this laptop.
And unfortunately it's hard to use warranty in my country (Ukraine)

  • MacBook Pro Retina - power cord keeps falling out of machine

Just purchased this MacBookPro 2 days ago and the mag safe power cord keeps falling out of the computer! Very frustrating! Any fixes for this?

I know my wife lets out a *#@! now and then when she realizes her newer MBP had become disconnected from the MagSafe. It does take considerably less tension to pull it free. For those who have owned an Apple notebook with the previous version of MagSafe, this is a common complaint though I suspect Apple considers it a feature. The original MacBook Pro is considerably heavier than the MacBook Air and retina MBP models. Shortly after buying a 2011 MacBook Air I nearly pulled the computer off the table. Had it been the older MBP the MagSafe would have pulled free. So I suspect Apple intentionally made the new MagSafe easier to pull free. But as Oglethorpe said, you can take it back and should - if nothing else to compare your to the ones at the store.

  • Macbook Pro Retina Late 2013 Runs extremely Hot

Hello, I have an Macbook Pro 13inch Retina, Late 2013. it gets extremely hot after 30 minutes of usage, I don't know why, please help me out. I've tried running Apple Hardware Diagnostic but it couldn't find any problems.

  • Interchanging MacBook Air and MacBook Pro Retina power adaptor

    Hi,
We have both a MacBook Air 2014 and a Retina MacBook Pro in our home.
Is it safe to use the MBA charger with the MBP and vise versa?
    Thanks.
    Tareq

OK, this what Apple support told me.
I can use the MBP Retina charger with the MB Air for emergencies.
However, I should not use the MB Air charger with the MBP Retina.

  • IPhone 5 getting really really hot when plugged into MacBook Pro Retina?

    Hi
I have had my Macbook for about 1 month and I recently discovered that my phone is getting extremely hot while charging through USB port.
I was not sure if it was my phone as I was having issues with volume buttons, so was not sure if I had some dodgy software or something. So I went to the apple store and it was replaced as it was actually a hardware issue.
But then with my new replacement iphone 5 I am still having the same issue of the phone becoming unbearable to touch because it is so hot!
Does anyone know if there is an issue with the Macbook Pro Retina's giving out too much power and whether I should go and see someone about the issue ? But in the mean time is it still okay for my phone to be charge this way?
    Thanks
    Elle

  • Is it possible to virtually bypass the battery on a macbook pro (retina 2014) and power the mac directly via AC power?

Is it possible to virtually bypass the battery on a macbook pro (retina 2014) and power the mac directly via AC power?
E.g. Dell allows you to plug the laptop into AC power but prevent battery charging.
Note: I do not want to physically remove the battery.
If there isn't an option on Mac OS, is there anything I can download to bypass the battery when I want?

Thanks for linking me! Wow I had no idea the clock speed would be cut so severely! What a bunch of rubbish, as if the AC won't provide enough power!
I guess the only solution to my question would be an app which virtually disconnects the battery but tricks the mac into thinking the battery is still connected. I'm just surprised Apple haven't yet started to build prisons for the government - considering how well they lock up their software and hardware!

  • Macbook pro retina 15 with win 7 in boot camp in games becomes hot and low graphics

hi i have macbook pro retina 15 and i installed win 7 with boot camp but when i want play games the first 2 minutes is good but the next minutes the macbook becomes very hot and graphics going very low i tried osx 10.8  but still not working. i tried command option shift power when mac is plugged in and off but still not working
does any one know solution of this problem??
    <Edited by Host>

    Hi All,
I tried this and it improved my FPS in games yesterday, still not getting FPS I would desire, but its become playable.
    Repasted here from another thread:
My retina MacBook Pro has had terrible graphics performance problems for a couple of weeks. I searched all over various forums and tried everything: resetting SCM, manually selecting discrete/integrated graphics card, deleting graphics kexts, etc. Nothing helped until I found this: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19880198#19880198
Now my rMBP has silky smooth graphics again!
The directions in that post are a little hard to understand so I cleaned them up here:
Step 1: Delete system windowserver preferences
In the Finder, from the menu bar, select "Go -> Go to Folder..."
    Enter: /Library/Preferences/
    Delete the file called com.apple.windowserver.plist
Step 2: Delete user windowserver preferences
In the Finder, from the menu bar, select "Go -> Go to Folder..."
    Enter: ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/
Delete all files that start with com.apple.windowserver   (On my rMBP, there was one file called com.apple.windowserver.12AFB147-95D6-5C70-8F62-C1E4F2BE81BE)
Step 3: Reset the PRAM    (These instructions are from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379)
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Hopefully this helps others with bad graphics performance on retina MacBook Pros.

  • Macbook pro Retina 15" a/c power connector melting

    hello everyone!
not sure if anyone can assist here and have knowledge of past experience or even apple support calls resolution about my issue with my Macbook pro retina 2012 model --- the magnetic power connector from the magsafe 2 is overheating and has burned out 2 out of 5 pins on the connector itself and 2 of the laptop one i can clearly see them black and all burned out. this means the power to the laptop is now inconsistent and i have to giggle withe the adaptor to find the right position and once i do the light goes from green to orange after a few attempts --- but then the connect gets really hot ( as much as i can not touch it again )
    question:
the laptop is out of warranty --- this seems to me a fault or a unique issue with this machine a/c power would it be looked at by apple support as a special out of warranty?
if not what would be the costs of repairing both he magsafe 2 (i have bought one now on the web ) and repairing the laptop power connection to ensure it does not happen again and burns out the machine or even god forbid it catches fire?
    regards

  • Too hot for my macbook pro retina 15 2013 late

I bougt my macbook pro retina 15 2013 late 2 days ago,
I found it is easily to be in high temprature.
I extended 2 external monitors for my mac , is it the reason to make my mac so hot?
the most cpu usage is idle.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
When you connect an external display, the dedicated GPU is used. This GPU generates more heat and needs more power, being this probably the reason why your Mac is hot. It also depends on the applications you use, but in this case, I do not find any application that takes a lot of processor and RAM.
Anyway, those temperatures are still not dangerous. Fans should be working to decrease the temperature.

  • Why is my new Macbook Pro Retina Display getting so hot?

I've had my Macbook Pro Retina Display for nearly a week and it works like a dream and I love it.
However it does get rather hot, around the F keys it's almost too hot to touch, all I use are internet applications and occasionally Spotify and iTunes so it's not like I'm constantly running hefty software.
I just wanted to check that this is normal as this is my first Macbook, I've been a PC user for 10 years.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Download iStat Pro and report back with the temp readings.
