MacBook Pro Retina (rMBP) Running Slow; System Resources unused.

Hey! My Mac runs extremely slow in certain applications such as Final Cut Pro and GarageBand, to the point that the applications are relatively unusable, e.g. waiting 10 seconds for music in GarageBand to start playing after pressing play. However, when observing Activity Monitor, these applications are only using <10% of the CPU, and only a small fraction of memory.
System Specifications are as follows...
2.6 Ghz Intel Core i7
16GB Memory
512GB Flash Storage
OS X (10.8.3)
I've performed AHT, SMC Reset, OS re-install, and an NVRAM Reset to seemingly no avail.
Any ideas what could be doing this?
I have a hunch it might be because I've only got ~20GB free on the startup drive - but as it's Flash Storage, I'm not sure if this is relevant. Also, IIRC, this issue persisted in the past when I may have had ~100GB free.
Thanks in advance!

Hello, my MacBook Pro has been running slow for quite some time now and it's frustrating. I hope you'll be able to help me. I've read this thread and figured out I should open a new one, so here it is.
I've already downloaded Etrechech and ran it and this is what I got:

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. What approximate values are shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec?
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

Is there a compact flash and SDXC card reader with USB3 and or thunderbolt connections that will work with new MacBook Pro retina laptops running OSX Mavericks please?

Yes, I too had this problem.
I was issued an update from Apple for a new version software as well as a new version of Lightrooom and now it shows up on the desktop and in finder as it should.
MacBook Pro Retina running 10.8.2 (12C54)
    Lightroom running 4.1
    Hope that helps.

  • Macbook pro lagging and running slow

My macbook pro has been running very slow lately, no matter what program I am using, and sometimes it freezes with the spinning beachball. I'd like to take steps to make it run faster, it's current speed is painful.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • Macbook pro retina display working slow

Yesterday, I woke up the macbook pro from sleep mode and i had several apps opened.
Then when i did the mission control it was working very slowly. All the gestures of the track pad were working slowly.
Then after a while it started to freeze. So I restart the laptop, but the problem did not solved.
Its working slow, and its been almost 15 days from the day i bought the laptop.
I have a macbook pro retina display 15" 16gb ram and 512gb flash storage.
    Please Help me!!

My retina MacBook Pro has had terrible graphics performance problems for a couple of weeks. I searched all over various forums and tried everything: resetting SCM, manually selecting discrete/integrated graphics card, deleting graphics kexts, etc. Nothing helped until I found this: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19880198#19880198
Now my rMBP has silky smooth graphics again!
The directions in that post are a little hard to understand so I cleaned them up here:
Step 1: Delete system windowserver preferences
In the Finder, from the menu bar, select "Go -> Go to Folder..."
    Enter: /Library/Preferences/
    Delete the file called com.apple.windowserver.plist
Step 2: Delete user windowserver preferences
In the Finder, from the menu bar, select "Go -> Go to Folder..."
    Enter: ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/
Delete all files that start with com.apple.windowserver   (On my rMBP, there was one file called com.apple.windowserver.12AFB147-95D6-5C70-8F62-C1E4F2BE81BE)
    Step 3: Reset the PRAM
        (These instructions are from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379)
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Hopefully this helps others with bad graphics performance on retina MacBook Pros.

  • Macbook Pro Retina fan runs constantly

    Hi,
I have a mid 2012 15 inch Retina Macbook Pro  that was running absolutely fine till last 2 years. Just recently it is creating problem like the fans of the laptop run constantly even under normal cpu load and temperature. I have tried every possible guide and way to fix it but just couldn't solve it.
Then I ran the hardware test and found out the following error:
    4SNS / 1 / 40000000 : Th2H - 127.875
After little bit of googling, I found out the error code referred to sensor related problems. Important to mention here, I live in Bangladesh where apple does not have a direct store but 1 - 2 authorised retailers and service providers. So I took my laptop to one of the authorised service providers w/o any delay and they told me I have to change my logic board as there's no other way to fix it. And changing the logic board will cost me hefty usd 1200 approximately which is a lot for me.
So can anyone suggest me what to do now. Is the error code really refers to replacing my logic board? Is there any way to skip the replacement? I mean is there any way to control fan by any app? What best I can do now?
I will highly appreciate if anyone gives me an honest opinion.
    Thanks.

Not sure of the feasibility of this, but one potentially cheaper option would be to buy a matching model from Ebay that has a non-logic board related fault (screen, physical damage, etc.) that can be bought cheap and the logic board transplanted to your own. At $1200 you are clearly in the "buy a new one" category. You would have to consider things like whether the MPB is registered (and potentially locked) like iOS devices can be. Not sure if the same security applies to Macs?
If replacement is your only option, then you should still be able to sell your current MBP on Ebay for parts.
Perhaps contact Apple direct and see if you can arrange a direct repair with them? I am assuming you didn't purchase the Applecare cover (which if only 2 years old would still cover your MPB).

  • Macbook Pro starting to run slow

Hi everyone, I have a macbook pro that is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with a 2.4 GHx internal core 2 duo and 4 GB of memory. I have had it for 2 years and its starting to run slowly. When it first boots up it seems to take forever and also when it shuts down. Also the programs are running more slowly. I bought an external hard drive and moved the bulk of my stuff onto it hoping that that would help, but it didn't. I have 186.57 GB available on my computer. I have a virus protection software and have ran it to see if maybe it has a virus but it doesn't find anything. Is this normal for it to start running slowly? Any tips on what I can do? I have considered updating to Lion but I have heard that it doesn't run very well on macbook pro and am also concerned that even if I buy it the harddrive will still run slowly.
    Thanks!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Back up your Mac, if you have not already done so. To learn how to do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
You inadvertently installed adware. Eradicating it is simple and you don't have to download or install anything to fix it. For an explanation or how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for Apple's recommended solution read How to install adware.
Google Chrome is known to run notoriously poorly on Macs. If you want to run Google Chrome, you may need to install more memory, upgrade your Mac to a newer model, or both. Use Safari or Firefox, both of which will run well and do not litter a system with a plethora of resource - hungry "helpers" and other constantly running intrusive processes such as those Google insists upon installing.
Adobe Flash Player is outdated. If you need to use Adobe Flash Player, you must keep it up to date. New versions appear very frequently.
You are running a torrent client. Doing so will leave you vulnerable to malware, data theft, or both.
Some users have resolved otherwise inexplicably poor performance with an SMC reset. Read and follow all the steps including those that may appear to be inapplicable or trivial.
If your Mac still performs poorly, please determine if the same problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
If none of the above resolves your concern, more information is required. To augment the information you already provided, follow the instructions below.
If your Mac is momentarily unresponsive, consider the following.
Launch the Console app - it is in your Utilities folder. You can find it by selecting Utilities from the Finder's Go menu.
If the log list column on the left is not already displayed, show the log list by selecting Show Log List from Console's View menu. Select Show Toolbar if it is not already shown.
Locate system.log in the list and select it. Many date and time-stamped entries will appear, hundreds of them, and you must find the entries relevant to your Mac's problem.
To do that click the Clear Display button in the Toolbar. All previously displayed log entries will be disappear.
Next: Perform whatever actions cause the Mac to exhibit the slow behavior. If the problem is caused by errors logged by the system, the Console window will show them being recorded in system.log.
One or more of them, along with their time stamps, may reveal the reason for the problem you describe.
Copy and paste those log entries in a reply. If hundreds of the same repetitive messages appear, please edit them before posting. There should be no need for more than a few log entries.
Most of the entries will be cryptic but will contain information you might consider personal such as your Mac's name. If you do not want that information to appear, delete or obscure it when posting your reply. Leave enough information so that the entries can be deciphered.

  • MacBook Pro Mid 2010 Running Slow

My Macbook Pro Mid 2010 is running slow.  Here are the details from EtreCheck.  The biggest issue I see is Carbonite but I am not sure if this is the real problem or not.  I would appreciate anyone's help to get this computer running faster.
Also, planning to upgrade to OS X Yosemite.  But I would like to resolve the speed issue first.  Does anyone have an opinion on whether Yosemite would be OK with this configuration.
    Thank you.

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The usual results of posting etrecheck output on this site without a full description of the problem are very poor. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

Trusteer Rapport is known to cause slowdowns and crashes, so unless it's required you are probably better off without it.
    SilverLight needs a security update.
Watch for a Java Update, probably early next week.
After the Adware Removal Tool finishes, take a second look at Safari Extensions to make certain they are items you need and installed.
    3rd Party Preference Panes:
              FUSE for OS X (OSXFUSE)
              Perian
FUSE causes issues for some users.
Perian is no longer supported and reportedly does nothing with Mavericks.
Some users find that 4GB RAM is insufficient for their needs, although many others are able to make it work for them.
There are many other software items listed that I'm not familiar with, so make sure you do, that they are compatible with Mavericks and fully up-to-date.

  • My MacBook pro has been running slow lately. It's not much about the internet, I mean slow in loading things like apps and pictures. When I double click an image on my desktop it takes forever to load it up. Help?

I would really like to get it back to how it was when I purchased it, every thing loaded up quickly. My friends have the same model as I and theirs run much faster than mine.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the system log for messages that may indicate a hardware fault. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|nspace-h|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • My MacBook Pro suddenly started running slow

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro started running extremely slow a couple of days ago. I tried to search for help and found this forum where people had the same problem. I see that people are advised to check with etrecheck software and post it here to have further instructions. So I did mine and below are my results. I have opened the back of my laptop, cleaned up everything including the dirty fan and reseated the hard drive (which I had problem with loose cable in the past). It seems to fix the slow problem at the moment but the problem keeps appearing once in a while. So I hope someone could help me out. Thanks a lot in advance.

    Hi dippypants and dominic23,
Thanks for your help. I followed dippypants' advice and checked the Activity Monitor. Most of the processess that occupy my CPU and memory are Safari and Safari Web Content. Sometimes when these go down to low, I still have the same problem with computer running super slow.
I then followed dominic23's advice to look for MacKeeper not only in Applications but my whole laptop but I could not find it any where. Yet it still shows when I do the etrecheck. Do you guys think I might have some malware problem?
Thanks! Any help is much appreciated.

  • Macbook pro seems to running slow

My macbook pro does not seem to be preforming as fast as usual. Is there anything I should "clean-up" to enhance preformance?

You may be able to improve the speed with some software work but it could also be your disk is corrupt or failing.
    Try an SMC Reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Is it faster now?  If not, proceed.
    Backup your data immediately:
Before proceeding you should make sure you have a current backup.  If it has been getting slower over time your disk could be a failing slowly.  SATA drives have two retry modes: short and long.  They can continue operating as read errors are increasing.  The long retry cycle is very long and can cause significant performance degradation.  If it has started long retries then it is likely to get worse and eventually fail.

    Safe Mode:
    - Reboot the system in Safe Boot mode.
    - Power on the Mac and when you hear the bong, hold down the shift key until it is booted.
    - Be patient, this will take some time while it checks the filesystem.
If it runs faster in Safe Boot mode then it is probably third-party software compatibility issues.
    - Restart.
    - Does it run faster after the restart?
Spotlight:  If Spotlight is continually running, re-index Spotlight:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2409
    Runaway processes:
Launch Activity Monitor (in the Applications/Utilities folder).
    Click on the CPU heading.
Are there a process taking up a large percentage of the time?
If so select it and click on the upper left hand X to force quit the process.
Run Disk Utility (found in the Applications folder):
-In Disk Utility look at the S.M.A.R.T. Status.
If it says the disk has a hardware problem that can't be repaired then stop.
Your system could be in danger of failing at any time and you need to replace the disk soon.
      Back your system up twice.
(You will need a second external disk for the second backup.)
Consider using Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper! for the second backup to clone the disk.
Jump to the Hardware replacement section and seek expert help.
Repair Disk Permissions and Verify Disk.  If Disk Permissions reports errors, don’t worry.  That is normal.  If Verify Disk reports errors then they need to be repaired.  Otherwise skip to the reinstall OS X section.
    Repairing your system disk:
    - Boot in recovery mode.
(Boot and when you hear the bong hold down the
Command and R keys simultaneously until you see the recovery screen.)
    - Select disk utility.
    - Select your system drive.
    - Repair Disk.
    - Did it complete without errors?
If not you may need a new disk or SSD.  Seek expert help.
If it completed normally then reboot.
-Did it boot faster and is it more responsive?
    Reinstall OS X:
If it is still slow you should reinstall OS X.
    - Boot in Recovery Mode again.
    - Follow the instructions to reinstall OS X.
    - Now does it boot and run faster?
    Hardware replacement or upgrade?
Hopefully by now your Mac is back to its normal speed.  If a hardware repair is indicated take it to an Genius bar at an Apple store for a free diagnosis and estimate of repairs.  If it is under warranty or AppleCare they will repair it for free.  If not, you can compare their estimate with DIY repairs.
    Genius reservation http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ .
or find an Apple Authorized Service Provider https://locate.apple.com/country
You can speed it up further by upgrading some hardware.  For the following memory, disk or SSD replacements and upgrades check out OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/, Crucial: http://www.crucial.com/ and Kingston http://www.kingston.com/us/.  You will need to know your Mac the year and season your Mac was first sold and model number which can be found here:
     > About This Mac > More Info… > System Report > Model Identifier:
If your Mac has 4 GB of RAM consider an upgrade to 8 GB.  An 8 GB memory upgrade is only $100.  When I upgraded a MacBook from 2 GB o 8 GB it booted thee times faster.
If your Mac has a disk and it won’t repair properly, is low on disk space, or you just want a considerably faster disk, check out an upgrade to an SSD-Hybrid disk. Google "Seagate XT" (~$100) or consider an SSD (120 to 480 GB).
Good luck.  May the software fixes do the trick.
