Macbook Pro Retina Wireless Drops

Hello,
I have what I think is one of the most annoying problems with my MBP and I hear it's not just me.  Essentially MOST times when the MBP does into any low power mode (even when on AC power) when it comes out of standby Wirelss shows connected to my Wireless network, but I cannot navigate to any websites.  If I disable and re-enable wireless it fixes itself (for this session).  By products of that include -- the failures in Time Machine backups... and, sparse errors with the backup (if it was in progess when it went into standby/lower power mode).
Anyone know how to permanently fix this?

Some light reading for you:

  • MacBook Pro Retina Wireless Connection problem

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro Retina (late 2013) w AC wireless capability, and I have not been able to connect to my wireless network at work. Other computers, including my previous MacBook Pro (mid 2008) and my iPad 3 are able to connect to the work network without problems and I have no problems connecting my new MBP to my home or other networks. I have Windows 8 on a Boot Camp partition, and when my MBP is booted under windows, it still does not connect. My MBP is running OS X 10.9.4. My work wireless network uses a Linksys Wireless G Access Point model WAP54G v.2. Rebooting the router does not help. When my MBP tries to connect to the work wireless network, the status in Network Preferences says "Wi-Fi has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.216.147 and will not be able to connect to the Internet."  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Jackso,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
For troubleshooting a self-assigned IP address, I would suggest reading over and using the following article as a reference and resource.
Internet connection does not work with an IP address space of 169.254.xxx.xxx from ISP, router, or manual configuration

  • WRT1900AC and Macbook Pro Retina - refuses to connect with Wireless N

I have the first generation Macbook Pro Retina, and just recently upgraded my D-Link D-655 for the Linksys WRT1900AC.  I also put the router on the first floor (the D-Link was in the basement) because there were some huge holes in wireless coverage I hoped to fix.
To my dismay, the thing will not negotiate a connection with ANY wireless N device as wireless N.  When I set it to wireless-N only on 5 GHz, nothing will connect to it, and same with 2.4 GHz.  My macbook's system report shows the network as being Wireless G on the 2.4 band and wireless A on the 5 GHz.
I have 50 MBPs internet here, and when I plug directly into the router, I get that.  However, I am maxing out at 20 MBPs over wireless with both my macbook and my Samsung Galaxy S4.
I'm about at wits end, my next step is to return this thing.  I have been on hold with support for 20 minutes, which is freakin eerie because they have no hold music or talking so it's just dead silent.
This morning I spent an hour on a live chat with support, and nothing she had me do made it better, and in fact any changes made it drop from 20-21 MBPs down to 16-17 maximum.
On her advice, I re-installed the firmware, downloading from online, and this had absolutely no effect.  Any other ideas to try?  I get these crappy connection speeds sitting 3 feet away from it.  I live in a house, so no massive interference from neighbors (only 2 other wifi networks are visible)
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

let me be clear here: I had the same slow speed with both my mac and my galaxy s4, it is not a mac problem.  I had disabled media prioritization and the WMM thing in the settings for media prioritization.  Yes I am sure I am connecting to the right SSID.  The old router is DIR-655.  Part of the reason I wanted to upgrade is it disconnected my galaxy s4 every 2 minutes (and many people have had that problem, a quick google search verified that the router just doesn't like galaxy s4).  OS X 10.7.5 but as I said my Galaxy has the same issue - it does not connect as wireless N, and when I make the router Wireless N only, not one of the computers in the house can connect to it.  That includes a Mac Mini, Galaxy S4, Macbook Air, Macbook Pro Retina, and a Chromecast (which only works on the 2.4 band, but same issue there).

  • Macbook Pro Retina (15") can't connect to wireless mouse and external USB keyboard

    Hi All,
I got my new MacBook Pro Retina (15 inch) about 3 weeks ago. It works fine. I got a 30" Dell screen that I am using via thunderbolt/usb adapter. Also, I am using a thunderbolt ethernet adapter. Both adapters work fine without any problems.
I have an apple usb keyboard connected to the USB hub of the screen, as well as my iphone cable. It is a regular, full size apple keyboard. In addition to this, I have a logitech nano connected directly to the right usb port of the macbook pro.
This setup was working well until a few days ago. I lost connectivity with my mouse. Initially, I thought the batteries are empty. After replacing them, I still had no connection (again, the usb receiver is *directly* connected to the macbook).
I changed a few cables here and there and noticed that I can get either the keyboard to work or the mouse but not both at the same time. A reboot did not help.
Did anybody encounter such a strange problem already? If so, what could I possibly do?
    Thank You,
    --Martin

    Hello nikkig00,
It is certainly difficult to use the computer if your wireless keyboard and mouse do not connect.  I found a few resources I recommend for this issue.
I recommend reviewing this article first:
Troubleshooting wireless mouse and keyboard issues
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3048
If the issue persists, I recommend reviewing the section titled "Top troubleshooting tips" in the article below.  Step 9 specifically stands out to me for the issue you described:
    9. Restart your computer
Sometimes a simple restart of your Mac is all it takes to get things running smoothly again. You may also want to try resetting your computer's PRAM and NVRAM.

  • I am going to replace my 3 year old MacBook Pro with a new MacBook Pro Retina display machine.  I have been told by Apple that I can use the Migration Assistant ON MY WIRELESS NETWORK (no cables) to transfer data... I've read this can take AGES.. True?

I am planning to replace my 3+ year old MacBook Pro with a new MacBook Pro, Retina display... I have been told by "chat" on the Apple site that I can transfer my data wirelessly... on my network.. Is is a good option?  I don't want to invest in cables if I can help it... since the old machine has firewire and the new one has thunderbolt!  Will the wireless transfer take forever... as in 30-50 hours???  I've been hearing these horror stories...

  • Does Apple TV support wireless connection to the new MacBook Pro retina in an extended display mode?

Does Apple TV support wireless connection to the MacBook Pro retina display in an extended display mode? What is the output resolution and is sound also transmitted across?

SB1983, by extended display do you mean mirror?  All MBP since early 2011 support it if they are running OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.  The resolution will depend on your Apple TV (2 Gen is 720 and 3rd Gen 1080) and wifi, it will lose some quality but I find it minimal.  It does also mirror the sound.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 15'/Sudden drop in graphics perfomance

Hi, I purchased the base model of the Macbook Pro Retina 15' display 2 weeks ago and recently installed Windows 7 via bootcamp just so I could play a couple of games which were not supported on OS X. Everything was going well until 3 days ago when I turned my mac on, logged into windows, booted up Bordelands 2 and noticed a massive drop in frame rates causing the game to be very laggy. At first I thought it was a problem with the game but then I had the same problem with Skyrim. I then reinstalled Windows 7 and the problem persisted. So I did a CineBench test on OS X Mountain Lion and got 14.7 fps on the OpenGL test which is more than half of what other people get with the same model Macbook Pro. So now I'm stuck on how to fix this, I'm not sure whether this is a software or a hardware problem and if there might be a quick fix that I can do or if I have to take it to an apple store to have it replaced. I would appreciate any help, thanks.

Thanks for this... you just made my day with this one line. Tried to figure out for days what went wrong with skyrim or the macbook pro, but a simple SMC reset helped.
For the record - since I had to google this SMC reset myself too - here is how I done it on the retina MBP:
    1. Shutdown the laptop.
    2. Make sure that the MagSafe power adapter connected.
    3. Press (left) SHIFT+CONTROL+OPTION+POWER buttons once (at the same time) ...no need to hold them.
    4. Press POWER button to turn your MBP on again.
Simple as that and worked like a charm for me.
    Big up for Ardalaan.

  • Macbook Pro Retina - Use a wireless keyboard

Silly question, but I need the answer.  Can the Macbook Pro Retina use the Apple Wireless Keyboard and then doc to a monitor via Thunderbolt?  My idea is just like you would dock a pc, so to speak.  I assume the answer to be yes, but need confirmation.
    Thanks!

Yes.  You can use an external keyboard and monitor and even close the MBpro lid to operate in clamshell mode.
Here are the rules for clamshell mode:

  • HT202124 Is plug in a USB wireless receiver (Logitech Unifying Receiver) prevents Macbook Pro Retina going to standby mode?

As the title implies, is this prevent Macbook Pro Retina (Mid 2014) from going to standby mode? It's not convenience to unplug the wireless receiver every time I don't use the notebook though.

That kind of panic can be caused by an adapter for an external display that isn't connected to anything. See this thread.
There are also reports that the panic may be triggered by waking an external display from sleep. To test that theory, open the Energy Saver preference pane and click the lock icon to unlock the settings, if necessary. Move the Display sleep slider all the way to the Never position on the right. See whether there's any change.

  • Internet Keeps Dropping on my Macbook Pro Retina

Recently on my Macbook Pro Retina, the internet keeps losing its connection. I've had this computer for a while and everything was fine until recently. I didn't change any settings and everything is fully up to date.
The scenario goes like this, I would be surfing a site and all the sudden it just stops working. The wifi signal is very strong and when I turn the wifi off and then turn it back on, its works perfect again for a while. I am not sure whats wrong, please help!

  • Memory leakage Macbook pro retina 15inch Early 2013

    Hi,
This is my first posting to the Apple community, so please forgive me if have missed a previous posting on this subject.
I have an early 2013 15 inch MBPro retina running 8 gigs.  My previous device was a MBpro 15 early 2008 4 gigs of ram.  I never expected the 2013 with double the ram to be constantly dropping below 2 gigs with only FireFox and/or MS word running.   The older 2008 device used only 2 gigs to run these programs.  It appears that the 2013 model is using 6 gigs.
I took the 2013 15 inch  MBpro retina to the Apple store for the Geniuses to run their diagnostics.  They said my device was running normally.  To prove such, they simultaneously opened Jim Carrey's web site 8 times and showed me that all of his the crazy stuff was working in each window.  They said that it is normal for a SSD machine to run on low memory.
Unfortunately, it has been my experience that when my memory drops when just using my normal Firefox based surfing,  my track pad scrolling starts to get very sluggish until my "memory clean" kicks in at 1.6 gigs and brings the memory up to around  2.5 gigs.  As I continue to surf, then the process repeats itself.  I never expected my old 2008 device to use significantly less ram running light applications better than my new 2013 device.
I have seen others post an "EtreCheck" and hopefully by posting mine, somebody can find what the Apple Geniuses could not.
    Thank you for your help!!

  • Macbook Pro Retina 2012 shuts down when selecting Recovery HD !!

    Hello guys,
I tried to reboot my macbook pro retina 2012 and I held down "Option" key while my macbook was restarting but it won't be able to access into the Disc Utility Menu.
So I really need help to get my macbook format the hard drive, reinstall OS 10.x.x ( any suggestion?). Thank you for reading my post and I look forward a good answer.

Restart the computer and hold down the COMMAND and R keys to boot from the Recovery HD. If that does not work, then you either have a defective Recovery HD or a failing hard drive.
What you can do is this:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.
