MacBook Pro running Windows Vista 64 bit

I have a business requirement to run Windows on my Mac. I have one of the new MacBook Pro's 5.1 with Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz and glass trackpad. My question is should I buy the 32bit or 64 bit package? I need to run MS Office, specifically Access, and my version is Office 2003. I'd prefer Vista rather than XP only because I've used it previously and it more resembles the Mac OS than XP's desktop. I know that Windows 7 is around the corner but I've got to run with what's available. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Barry

True, Windows 32-bit, if run natively (ie. not in a virtual machine, in which case the whole 4GB isn't available anyway) will not see even the entire available 4GB. But it's a moot point. Even if running Vista 64-bit, MS Office is a 32-bit application - it is already RAM limited to 32-bit address space, regardless of what the OS is capable of. Sometime next year, MS may start shipping a 64-bit version of Office, but then again, when was the last time MS actually met a proposed shipping date with any product?
As I said, to take advantage of 64-bit computing, you need 3 things - more then 4GB of RAM, a 64-bit OS, AND 64-bit applications.
Barry - as to how you want to run it the main thing is do you need or want access to your OS desktop or files at the same time as running Windows? If you do then a virtual machine makes sense. I run VMWare Fusion on my work Mac Pro (which has 10GB of RAM) and have both XP 32-bit and 64-bit virtual machines. I simple run my virtual machine in one Spaces desktop, and have 3 other Spaces desktops for my OS X applications. From the Windows virtual machine, I can drag and drop files to and from my shared OS X folders.
If you don't care about simultaneous sharing of resources, then from a performance perspective, it makes more sense to use bootcamp and run Windows natively (since booting to windows will always give better performance then a virtual machine).
If you go the virtual machine route, and are eligible for the education discount, then I would order VMWare Fusion from Apple (actually, once your order is processed, you just get a download account for the VMWare web site, so you actually get near-immediate access to your product).

  • Can MacBook Pro Run Windows Vista?

    Hi,
Can I run Windows Vista 32/64 bit on MacBook Pro without BootCamp? I saw it use Intel Core 2 Duo as its CPU.

Actually it can (if you put in the Vista disk and clear OSX off the drive, which I wouldn't advise doing), but its not a good idea, because without the bootcamp drivers, you wont able to use the MBPs features, like the backlit keyboard, the built in iSight, the remote, the trackpad with two finger right click, no wireless, no ethernet, no USB or firewire, no 3D acceleration (no GPU drivers) and more. You could try and find out the vender of all those hardware components and download them (that is assuming they have drivers on their websites that will work with the MBP), but that could take a long time.
Why you ask, because the hardware is totally compatible with XP SP2 and Vista. All Intel Macs that shipped after the release of bootcamp last year have the necessary firmware to boot Windows. All bootcamp does is install EFI firmware support for booting between OSX and Windows, add Windows booting to Startup Disk and burn a driver CD/DVD to add functionality of the above mentioned hardware.

It all depends on what your useage of Windows will be, for playing games install it in BootCamp, for word processing, spreadsheets, email. browsing etc a virtual Machne will be fine.

  • MacBook Pro running Windows XP with Snow Leopard 10.6.8

When I got a MacBook Pro in 2006 I gave a small partition to my husband so he could log into his computer at the office. I used Boot Camp and an OEM WIndows XP disk. Everything ran smoothly for 5 years... last week he started having problems with windows and after doing some diagnostics and deletions we were able to get the system up and running.
I have recently gotten a newer MacBook Pro and decided I should wipe the old one clean, give him a larger partition and reinstall everything. SO... I downloaded lion wiped the drive clean and reinstalled system software. Opened up Boot Camp clicked download Windows support software got an error. After searching support found that Lion doesn't support XP... His company still uses XP and he's not that computer Savvy so it makes sense to keep him with what he's familiar with (plus who wants to buy another windosOS)... SO I decided to reinstall the original disk of Snow Leopard, re partitioned the drive loaded XP, used the Windows installer disk I originally made with the Boot Camp beta version I downloaded 5+ years ago and everything was hunky dory... till this morning when I logged on to his system to do further installs and it says that hardware changes had been made and that WIndows needed to be "reactivated" click here... so I do and find the internet connection was missing (?) Works fine on the mac so it's a windows issue.
So I put in the windows xp disk to see if I can reinstall the OS and get an error "no boot disc"... I just decided to start over but am wondering if I made a mistake using the "mac windows installers" disk I made years ago. I go on to support and tried to download a newer version  of the installers and it wants to give me an older version of Boot Camp.(am now thinking I might have had regular leopard when I first set up the initial partition/install for Windows)
I realize this is all long winded and maybe somewhat confusing. Bottom line is... I have a macbook pro that I need to install Windows XP on. Am I on the right track (planning to reinstall the XP disk but NOT repartition, etc.) Should I go back to Leopard? Should I erase the partition and start over? is there more updated Windows drivers I should be using??? SHould I bite the big one and buy Windows 7 and go forward from there?

Ok, that's what I have done... I have Snow Leopard Installed, 10.8.6 and it's got Boot Camp 3.0.4... my questionis the Mac Windows Install Drivers you add after installing Windows. Windows looks terribly awkward and I'm guessing it has something to do with the ATI graphics card sofware the mac disk installed. Is is ok to use the one I created years ago? I can't seem to find a place to create a new one using the 10.8.6 and 3.0.4.
When I orignially installed Boot Camp you had to create a disk using Boot Camp that you installed in Windows after the initial OS installation.

  • Early 2011 15-inch MacBook pro running a tad bit slow

Had it for a while now and he's been treating me well, but all of a sudden the performance has started going a little wonky. Sometimes when I'm working, it'll just go black-screen (and stop playing music if I was playing any before) and then the login screen will show up, or it'll go to full on sleep where sometimes it'll respond if I press Enter a couple of times, but other times i'll have to close the clamshell and reopen it to be taken back to the login screen.  Also, I get the rainbow pinwheel more often than I used to, for longer than I used to,  for simple tasks like using Safari or opening Word or trying to access a menu or quit an app.  Some apps will take a considerable time to open, and the icon just keeps a-bouncing in the dock until 20 years later when the app eventually opens.  I've taken him into the Apple store and had them reset the SMC as that seemed to be the main problem all signs were pointing to.  But the symptoms still remain, so I'm hoping I can find some help here from you all. I'm a broke college kid, so I'm not trying to drop huge bucks, but any little bit of info is greatly appreciated.

That's a hardware kernel panic for certain and it does look as if it was caused by a faulty GPU.
The only thing that I can really recommend is printing out the kernel panic and taking it and your machine into your local Apple Store/AASP. They can diagnose the problem and give you an estimate for repair (unless you purchased the extended AppleCare Protection Plan - in which case the repair should be free).

  • Target Disk Mode on Macbook Pro to Windows Vista?

I am scheduled to take my Macbook Pro in for the NVidia Warranty repair and need to back up the hard drive (I know, I know...). I can't get the Macbook to boot at all b/c of the NVidia issue, except in Target Disk Mode.
And the only other computer I have is Windows (I know, I know...this feels very cathartic, btw). Is it possible to have the Windows Vista computer connect to the Macbook via FireWire while the Macbook is in Target Disk Mode to temporarily back up my files on the Windows computer?
I know I could pay for backup, but I'm cheap. So I'm trying to find a workaround.
    Any help would be appreciated!

Is it possible to have the Windows Vista computer connect to the Macbook via FireWire while the Macbook is in Target Disk Mode to temporarily back up my files on the Windows computer?
It may or may not work depending on the PC's configuration, but a program such as MacDrive needs to be installed on the PC to enable it to read the Mac's hard drive in any case.

  • Macbook pro running windows 7 parallel vpn works in windows and not mac

I recently purchased a macbook pro. My medical management software runs in windows. I installed the software on the mac using parallels. If I'm at my home network/office I can access the server/program. When I try to access the vpn outside the network it won't work.

Parallels is supossed to be loaded on Mac OS platform and then you load Windows 7 on Parallels. The VPN is also supposed to be loaded on the Parallels platform. The VPN is not supposed to be on the Mac platform.
If you need to run the VPN on the Mac platform then you have to edit the set up of it because it is not the same as running in Windows. You'll have to ask your IT person about using the VPN on the OS X.

  • Two internal hd in macbook pro, run windows 7 and storage on optical bay hd

Hi, I've yet to do this, but I would like to put a 1tb hdd where the optical drive is. Ideally I want the ssd, which is currently where the hard drive normally is, to have osx on it, and the optical hdd to have Windows 7, and also be used for os x storage of photos, files etc.
Now my idea is that I take out my current ssd, put in the 1tb hdd, then, whilst it is in the original hard drive place, put windows 7 onto it with a partition of say 250gb, leaving the 750gb for storage for the osx. After doing this take hdd out, put into the optical drive bay, and return my ssd back into the original hard drive slot of my macbook pro.
Will this work, and then when I'm in os x mode, will I have a 750gb hard drive show up on my desktop for storage. Also will I then, on start up be able to choose if I want to log into os x of the ssd, or windows 7 of the 250gb (partitioned 1tb) hdd ???

That's up to you. You'll have an OS X volume on the HD, but you don't necessarily have to have the OS on it. I do, because I consider it useful if I want to experiment or if I have a problem with the SSD. My first SSD was an Intel, which did fail. Because I had a copy of the OS on the HD, I was able to keep running.

  • System Crash when Playing Warcraft 3 on MacBook Pro running Windows XP

I have the latest 2.4Ghz 15" MacBook Pro bought about a month ago. I installed BootCamp and Windows XP. Whenever I play Warcraft 3 on Windows XP, the system CRASHES and RESTARTS. This thing happens 100% of the time. Any suggestions?

I have seen a number of posts with similar problems across all PC hardware manufacturers. This is either a WOW 3 problem or a Windows XP problem. Either way... this is probably not the best place to get a response. Since you're basically running a PC while using BootCamp... I would suggest you post your comments in the WOW3 support forums. You may want to do a search there first as there are quite a few people with a similar problem and see if any of their suggestions help you out.

If it was plugged in and recharging IN your backpack you probably got the battery hot. I don't know if there is an overheat auto-shut down feature for the battery.
It may have woke Windows up to tell you it got hot and then crashed or tried to shutdown and couldn't.
As far as the heat for the processor or ram, it does have an auto shut down for overheat situations but if it crash's and stays in limbo land then that part of it won't see it and it could damage things inside. Depending on how you had your backpack stuffed last time and this time it could just be a coincident on getting extra hot. Depending on what year MacPro you have you can either use the Hardware Test DVD that came with your computer (or press and hold the D key when it restarts) to check to see if it can find anything wrong.
Or you may have a hardware problem that makes it wake up or restart by itself and Windows just happens to have the right combination to trigger it. If it's still under warranty you may want to have Apple look at it?
Not to mention, if it's happened before then maybe it's time to see WHY it does it before it does do some damage?
Try putting it to sleep and see if you can replicate the problem while at home.
