    Macbook Pro Down Arrow key fell off. Any DIY, or does it have to go to the store? I'm fairly certain the local MacAuthority has a fix, but i'd like to get it done now. I saw a 30 minute long youtube video about it, but he doesn't mention the arrow keys. The only thing similar is the small function keys. And I don't think it's the same mechanism.

    Hello brooklinekilla,
    I would be concerned too the up arrow key on my keyboard was not working.  I found an article that can assist with further isolating and troubleshooting issues with the built in keyboard.  I recommend following the steps under the section titled, "Some keys don't work as expected" in the following article:
    One or more keys on the keyboard do not respond

  • Macbook pro with inoperative keys

    i have been given a macbook pro 2.2 that has inoperative up, right,and left arrow keys as well as the z key.  the down arrow key does work!!
    since these keys are at the opposite ends of the keyboard, i'm wondering whether it is more than just a key replacement to resolve the problem?  note that the z key is hardly used by anyone while the arrow keys are frequently used by most people.
    secondly, i wonder if it is worthwhile to take the keys off and put them back on to see if that eliminates the problem prior to my having to purchase new ones?  if they work, fine, if not, then i have to replace them.
    i've seen the video about key replacement on youtube and, i've noted the places to purchase the keys.  these may have been older links or videos.  anything new places as far as purchasing the keys?
    thanks,
    mikeB.

    thanks,
    Ok, it's either a 2.2GHz or model identifier, doesn't really matter which as both are affected the same by this issue:
    First try a PRAM reset and SMC reset.
    In some cases, the battery can interfere with a cable between it and the inside of the MBP, causing keyboard and/or trackpad issues. Shut down the MBP, disconnect the power adapter, remove the battery, take a piece of something semi-soft (like a paper napkin folded over a couple times), place it over the cable you see in the battery compartment, and tape it down. Replacethe battery and see how things go. If this works, you'll eventually want to replace the keyboard/trackpad cable (about $35 if you can do the workyourself). Note that if you go to a repair shop, they usually want to replace the entire top case assembly, which is much more costly.
    If the issue persists, shut down, disconnect the power adapter, remove the battery, connect the power adapter, boot the MBP and see if the issue persists without the battery in place (but remember to save a lot, because if the power adapter gets pulled out the MBP will immediately shut down and any unsaved work will be lost).
    Also look at the battery to see if it has any signs of deformity/bulging, in which case do not use it again (it may be pushing on the keyboard/trackpad cable and causing the issue); it must be replaced.

  • My macbook pro retina F2 key makes a squeaking sound due to heat!?

    Hello All,
    My brand new Macbook Pro Retina's F2 key makes an awful squeaking sound when i press it.... The sound got even worse when the macbook ran hot and i had to presse the key for multiple times....... Now it seems like even my F3 key is slowly dying when my macbook is under heat stress and i am pressing it.
    Does anyone else have this problem? Its really bothering cause its a brand new computer, its still practically warm from the production line..... I called apple and they told me to go to a service centre :-( but i need this machine for my work and a service centre takes the minimum of 10 work days to repair it.........
    What can i do....
    Kind Regards Cor.

    Hi guys, i know exactly how you feel. The rmbp should be perfect, i mean common its a 2300++ system... After i posted the above i deceided to take it to the apple store and let them fix it. I must say they did a good job! I got my rmbp back within 3 days! I think thats very fast.
    What they did is they replaced the top case, cause the keyboard and mousepad are fixed to it. Also the battery is so thats brand new as well.
    Now everything seems to work properly, i tested every key and searched for scratchtes or any imperfections but all seems ok.
    I can only give you 1 advice if your key squeaks, take it back it should be perfect! In my case the squeaking only got worse and i still think it has something to do with the heat of the rmbp cause it came when i was gaming and the macbook got really hot.

  • 2011 Macbook Pro boots, all keys seem to function, blank screen

    Yesterday at around 5pm EST my Macbook Pro (2011 model with the AMD Radeon HD 6750M) froze while browsing the internet (specifically XDA-Developers). This wasn't a normal " freeze" were it starts responding after a few minutes. Nothing would function, the caps lock key wouldn't light up, etc. Naturally, I held down the power button and shut my laptop down assuming it would work upon rebooting. Unfortunately when it started booting it just got stuck on the gray screen sans Apple logo. Now this is where things got weirder:
    I tried turning it on again, but nothing happened. I didn't get any chime or anything. I began looking up troubleshooting guidelines on the internet and reset PRAM, NVRAM, SEC etc. Occasionally I would get it to boot and I tried booting into my Windows 7 partition, but it just stalled on the Windows 7 starting logo. After this I had continued problems where sometimes the screen would display vertical lines ontop of the gray screen, horizontal lines covering the bottom half of the screen while constantly making the booting noise but not actually changing, and just not turning on at all.
    Finally I let it sit for awhile and turned it on. I got the chime and decided to just let it be, thinking it might fix itself. Now, all my keys work, I can change the volume and hear it and I can even play/pause a song through the respective button. Unfortunately, the screen is just completely off, no backlight at all.
    I know this isn't the Nvidia issue since I have an AMD graphics card, but I have run out of options. I booked an appointment at an Apple store, but I'd prefer to fix it myself. It seems like it is a problem with the graphics card though, maybe a loose connection. Does anyone have any idea what it could be? I typed this on my phone BTW, so sorry for any typos (I tried to correct everything).

    Were you able to perform a Safe Boot? What you're describing could be a hardware or software issue. If you're able to do a Safe Boot, it's more likely a software issue. To perform a Safe Boot, hold the Shift key down right after you hit the power button and keep holding it down until a horizontal bar appears below the Apple on the gray screen. This will perform special diagnositics/fixes and boot the Mac with only essential kernel extensions.
    The vertical/horizontal lines are, however, really suggestive of a hardware problem, like a video card defect or defect in the connection of the computer to the display.

  • Macbook Pro keyboard sticky keys bug

    Hello!
    I have macbook pro retina 13" (Late 2013) and from time to time my keyboard suddenly starts to repeat last pressed keys, writing a pattern like a "AbcAbcAbcAbcAbcAbcAbcAbcAbcAbcAbcAbcAbcAbcAbc" in occasions, when I wanted to write "Abcdef". I have never spilled liquids on my keyboard or something else.
    I haven't found any pages and discussions with the same problem and solutions for it.

    You have already done the "standard" troubleshooting approaches. As much as you hate to take it in, I think that is your best option.

  • After Snow Leopard Install on Intel MacBook Pro, my number keys don't work

    I installed Snow Leopard recently and have since been unable to use my number keys on my Intel based MacBook Pro. I waited for the 6.1 release, hoping it would fix the bug, but it did not. I have reinstalled Snow Leopard, tried num-lock, but have yet to fix it. I am also unable to use the keys shift functions, like the @ symbol.
    Any help would be great!

  • Will the Apple Genius Bar take my MacBook Pro if the keys are messed up?

    I got my MacBook Pro a couple of weeks ago and its still under warrenty. A frew weeks ago, I got some weird yellow stuff on my keys. I tried to get the stuff out but i eventually broke the keys. Will apple now take my MacBook Pro?

    Yes, they will. But they will state that the problem was caused by misuse and not covered by warranty. Then they will offer to repair it The Official Way by replacing the entire topcase, to the tune of $700-$900 out of your pocket. Oh, WAIT! I'ts a Retina. Scratch that, think about $1500-$2000.
    If the "yellow stuff" did not trickle down into the guts of the Mac and it still works, note that replacement keycaps can be had at https://www.replacementlaptopkeys.com/
    And I will do my best to not imagine the nature of the yellow stuff and how it came to be spurted on the suffering keyboard.......

  • I have Late 2011 Macbook Pro and zxcv keys are not working?

    I have late 2011 Macbook Pro and the zxcv keys are no longer working. Once I connect USB keyboard I can utilize these keys. Do anyone have solution?

    How did you try to use Acitivty Monitor?
    Open Activity Monitor, choose "All processes" from the list, and sort processes by CPU usage. More likely than not, there will be task using up good bit of CPU.
    You could also try resetting SMC:

  • [Solved] Control MPD with Macbook Pro Play/Pause keys

    I have mpd installed and working with ncmpcpp as the client.
    I have a 17" C2D 9600GT Mac book Po.
    I have pommed installed and working.
    I'm using openbox, but I sometimes use awesome when I feel like it.
    I think that's all you really need to know. This is probably really simple, but I'm not sure how to do it.
    I would like the play/pause key to play/pause, skip forward key to skip forward and the skip back to skip back.
    This is a little unrelated, but if any of you have a macbook pro you would know about the alternate to the F3 key. In mac It takes all of your active windows and tiles them across the screen so you can select what window. In awesome, to change the tiling mode you press Command(super)+space. Can I make that alternate F3 key mapped to this?
    Thanks guys.

    Got it all set. Thanks dude. That link helped quite a bit.
    Just in case anyone was wondering, I ended up figuring out what the keys were mapped to and assigned them to control mpc via the rc.xml for openbox.
    So basically, copy and paste this into your rc.xml as long as your keys are mapped to XF86 correctly.
    <keybind key="XF86AudioPrev">
    <action name="Execute">
    <execute>mpc prev</execute>
    </action>
    </keybind>
    <keybind key="XF86AudioPlay">
    <action name="Execute">
    <execute>mpc toggle</execute>
    </action>
    </keybind>
    <keybind key="XF86AudioNext">
    <action name="Execute">
    <execute>mpc next</execute>
    </action>
    </keybind>

  • Macbook Pro left CTRL key not working

    I woke my Macbook pro from sleep this morning and now the left ctl and shift keys aren't working. They were working fine last night, I was using both keys for photoshop, but now nothing. I've tried remapping the CTRL key to fn using KeyRemap4Macbook, but it doesn't work, even a restart. System Preferences doesn't show any change in keyboard layout or mapping. Has anyone else had this problem? The Macbook wasn't moved last night, nothing new was plugged in, and no liquids were anywhere near it. It's an i7 2.3 with 8gb ram, running Mountain Lion 10.8.2, thanks

    Thanks for your reply Peter. I restored defaults, and restarted twice, but still nothing. Both keys work on an external keyboard, so I think that it's a mechanical fault. I'll send it back next week when this job has finished- let's hope that it's not part fo a faulty batch.

  • MacBook Pro Keyboard Function Keys & Backlight Stopped Working

    This is a repost of an older thread, however i am having the same exact problem and i know i am not the only one.
    Origionally posted by FIDO2010 -
    "Problem: The keyboard function keys (i.e. screen brightness, audio volume etc.) and backlight no longer work in Windows 7 (64-Bit) running Boot Camp 3.x. I also had the identical problem with Windows Vista (64-Bit) running Boot Camp 2.1.
    Oddity: When I first installed Windows 7 and Boot Camp 3.x (same with Vista and Boot Camp 2.1), the keyboard and backlighting worked perfectly for about 3 Shut-Down/Re-Starts.
    Points of Interest: I use a Logitech MX Revolution 2.4GHZ mouse and a Microsoft Blue Tooth Presenter Mouse 8000 with this machine. When I had this problem running Vista 64-Bit and Boot Camp 2.1, I assumed the problem was created by installing the drivers for these mice (suspecting that the mouse drivers over-wrote the Apple keyboard driver); however, I installed NO mouse drivers when I deleted the Vista 64 Boot Camp partician and created the "fresh" Windows 7 (64-bit) / Boot Camp 3.x partician.
    I have tried the obvious of un-installing/re-installing Boot Camp, running the Boot Camp driver in repair mode, and manually replacing the keyboard driver itself. None of which have worked.
    Solutions?"
    Any insight will be greatly appreciated. this issue is driving me crazy. Must have installed windows a good 30-40 times in the past couple months. thank you

    As you all are probably well aware, this exact problem has been asked on a countless number of discussion boards and each is answered with a different "solution." Quotation marks are necessary because the solutions suggested work for some users but don't work for others. So, in a way, I offer those who read this reply this same disclaimer. The following solution worked for me (for now!) but it may not work for you.
    Just like those other users, my volume and brightness function keys on my Macbook refused to work after installing the latest Bootcamp updates and after restarting Windows 'x' amount of times. In addition, trackpad scrolling, which worked great after one of the updates, also did not respond.
    Here's what I did to get them working again, and it's rather simple. Find the Bootcamp application in Windows. Mine was housed in Program Files but yours may located be somewhere differently. Right-click the application and select Open. In my case the screen went black and the resolution downgraded to 800x600 or lower when the images on the screen returned so keep this in mind if or when you attempt this. The screen is significantly cropped so you may have trouble navigating to the Control Panel to fix the resolution to your liking. Anyway, now my brightness and volume function keys and trackpad scrolling work properly.
    I should mention one or two more bits of information before I sign off. To start, I cannot say if this trick continues working after restarting Windows. Also, I do not know if this process is something you have to perform everytime you run Windows. In any case, let the world know if this or any other solution fixes this stated problem for you.

  • Windows 7 boot camp (Macbook Pro 13") function keys

    Hey everyone,
    I've had Bootcamp installed on my Mac prettty much since a few days after I bought it about 3 weeks ago. I've always had this issue- but finally thought I'd do something about it.
    So, when I'm booted into Windows 7 (ultimate, 64 bit) my function keys (brightness, keyboard brightness, volume, eject) will not work, with or without the fn key held down. I have toggled the option in bootcamp preferences.. But this has not helped. Other than that though- it works 100% correctly... It's not too bad... its just irritating.
