Macbook Pro's keyboard and trackpad aren't functioning well, please help, thank you!

Dear Apple Support and Apple Communities,
hopefully this question will be easily understood and will be answered with answers that can help, useful and beneficial. I will explain the problem, story that I guess began the problem, specs and information of the Notebook and so on.
I love products produced by the brand, Apple, but they can get broken, ruined or destroyed. So, I do try my best to take care of devices that I have well. Although, my father bought a Macbook Pro last year, around November or December, 2013(I THINK). I don't think it's very old, maybe 3 - 5 months, but it should be in a good condition. I have dropped it many times, hopefully that won't effect the problem. Now, the problem, the Notebook is a beautiful device that I would love to keep using, but I don't really know how to use it properly and in the CORRECT/RIGHT/GOOD/SAFE way. If possible, can you list methods/ways to do those things? If so, thank you! Anyway, back to the topic, the Notebook's keyboard has a problem, some keys aren't responding, especially the alphabets/letters, I guess some other keys worked because I did the PRAM RESET. Anyway, the trackpad is also not functioning well, sometimes, when I right click the trackpad or when I click the entire surface with one finger(RIGHT CLICK OR SOMETHING ELSE), it would left click, I found a way to fix is, put the Notebook to sleep by closing the cover, hopefully that's alright. Anyway, it all began, I guess, when I was brushing my teeth. I dislike to waste time, so I used the Notebook and brushed my teeth simultaneously. I guess Saliva was being produced because of the acidic substance(TOOTHPASTE)? Anyway, my mouth had a lot of liquid in it, could have been Saliva, water and toothpaste. So, Physics, natural forces, Gravitational force occurred, some of the liquid left my mouth and onto the keyboard. I didn't panic because I think I heard that keyboard could not or did not suck in a lot of liquid, but I did clean it up. Anyway, the Notebook including the keyboard and trackpad were functioning like normal. I guess after three hours, something happened to the Notebook. I think I was using Safari in FULLSCREEN MODE and suddenly an application or software for another application appeared. It was requesting permission for an update, I think. I updated it and suddenly, the Notebook went haywire. Probably not immediately, but I guess the Notebook did go haywire. I tried searching for ways to fix it, but not much could fix or solve the problem. Hopefully your answer-s will fix or solve the problem, thank you.

INFORMATION
The Notebook has a few dents, I guess. I tried to open the keys to check for toothpaste or liquids. My brother told me that toothpaste is dense, probably the answer? My other brother told me that the keyboard and/or trackpad are/is "shocked"(LIQUID AND ELECTRICITY, NOT SUCH GOOD COMBINATIONS). Hopefully this is enough to be counted as detailed and informative. Thank you for your time! Take care!

Take it to an Apple Store for diagnosis and repair. This will not be free, dropping the Mac and dropping liquids on it are not covered by the warranty.

Click here, install the DVD, run Software Update, open the Mac App Store, and try purchasing Mountain Lion. If you get told it's incompatible, phone the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion.

  • 2011 MacBook Pro 13" Keyboard and trackpad completely unresponsive. Only external devices work. Restarting does nothing.

Was in the middle of a game and the keyboard and track board became completely unresponsive. Was using an external mouse so I was able to restart the computer but it has done nothing to help. Also closed the screen for a while to no effect.

Hopefully someone will be able to recognize what is going on here and be able to help you. If not, are you in Madison, Wisconsin? If so, I believe you have an Apple Store. You can always make an appointment with the genius bar and get help that way. The genius bar is free. Your keyboard problem sounds like some sort of a software glitch to me, and it shouldn't be too hard for someone knowledgeable to fix.
There is one thing you can do which might or might not help, but it is a good thing to do on a regular basis. Go to your Applications folder and find your Utilities folder and then find Disk Utility and drag it down to the dock. Open it and click on your hard drive by brand name in the left column and then on the First Aid tab. Click on "Repair Disk Permissions" and repeat until all disk permissions have been repaired. It might take several times. You can safely ignore the SUID warnings--they are a known issue which will probably be fixed later on. Repairing permissions is something you should always do before and after installing software--it's just good practice and will prevent many problems that can arise if you don't do this on a regular basis.
    Good luck!

I'm not sure this is what you're looking for, but it might help:

  • Macbook 3,1. Clean install of Lion. Two days later my keyboard and trackpad aren't responding.

Left my computer for a couple minutes. Came back. Tried to move my mouse. Wouldn't move. Tried to Command-Tab to a different program. Keyboard wouldn't type. Plugged in my USB mouse and restarted. Got to the login screen and couldn't type in my password because the keyboard, along with the trackpad, still wasn't working. Tried powering down and removing the battery. Nothing.
So I scheduled a Genius Bar appointment. But is anyone else having similar issues with Lion upgrades killing their keyboard and trackpad?

So it happens constantly, but shutting down my machine, unplugging the power cable, removing the battery, and hitting the power button/holding it down to reset the SMC works every time. Anyone know what this means?

  • Mid 2011 Macbook Air - Yosemite keyboard and trackpad stopped working, the only button that worked was the power button, only one USB port works.

    I have a Mid 2011 Macbook Air.
    Upgraded to Yosemite last week.
Three days ago I was using my Macbook Air for the first time since upgrading to Yosemite. I had been using my Macbook Air for approximately 30 minutes, I was using safari and the keyboard and trackpad stopped working (would not respond). The only button that worked was the power button.
I rebooted and they were still not working. I plugged in a USB mouse and external USB keyboard, only one USB port would work (the Left USB port if looking at the screen) so I had to swap between keyboard and mouse.
After logging in there is a bluetooth icon at the top of the screen with a sawtooth line through it. Bluetooth is unavailable and the bluetooth icon is missing from the system preferences menu.
If I run a hardware test by holding D (on USB keyboard) at startup it says that no problems are found and at the conclusion of the test the keyboard and trackpad start working again. When I log on the bluetooth is working again.
I shut down the Macbook Air and when I started it again the keyboard and trackpad and right side USB ports were all not working again. I logged in using the USB keyboard and mouse and the bluetooth not available sawtooth icon had returned.
I ran the hardware test again and at the conclusion of the test the trackpad and keyboard started working again.
I have tried deleting com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and com.apple.Bluetooth.plist.lockfile from /Library/Preferences/ and tried resetting SMC and Power Functions but this did not fix the issue. The only thing that seems to work is running a hardware test - obviously I don't want to do this every time I use the computer.
I do not believe any hardware is faulty/damaged - I think it has something to do with bluetooth/Yosemite.
I do not have the Macbook with me at the moment, if you have suggestions that I can try or additional checks/info you require please let me know and I can get back to you.
    Thanks,
    John

    Hi!
I have exactly the same problem, and I can't find any solution.
I can't even track down the root of the problem: the Bluetooth/Wifi module? The trackpad? The keyboard/top case? The logicboard?
I've tried all the usual: SMC/PRAM reset, clean install, kext cache clearing.
    Any suggestion is greatly appreciated!

  • MacBook not recognizing Keyboard and trackpad

Our white MacBook has suddenly devepoped the problem of not recognizing any of the internal input devices. A dialog box appears seeking keyboard and trackpad connections over bluetooth on the desktop after start up. I was able to work around this with a USB keyboard and mouse. What might be the problem?

sorry you say your built in trackpad.  and your built in keyboard.  reboot.  reset your pram.  maybe your smc
    see if that helps

  • MacBook Air 13", Keyboard and Trackpad wont work anymore. Any suggestions?

Hey my new Macbook Air 13" 1,8Ghz had a defect with the keyboard and trackpad. None of these input devices can work, therefore i am not able to logon to my system. Has anyone similar problems, or a solution for my problem?

This is not likely to be an issue with the OS version - if the keyboard and trackpad are both inoverative, there isn't a setting or system property in Lion that could cause it.
I would try an SMC reset - it's detailed in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US but the procedure for a macBook Air is:
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
If that doesn't help, and given the lack of responsiveness from the keyboard it may not, and assuming the laptop was bought through an authorised Apple reseller, the warraty should be valid and is worldwide, so it should be possible to have it examined by Apple or an Approved Service Provider in her area.

  • My Keyboard and trackpad aren't working.

I recently restarted my MacBook and when it restarted and booted up the keyboard and trackpad won't work. I have restarted my computer since then and nothing. I took out the battery and unplugged it and rebooted it and still it won't work. The only button that works is the power button. I tried to put in my install discs and I can't choose to restore because the trackpad won't work...

I am currently having this same issue. What can I do to fix this??? Brand new macbook unibody.

  • My Macbook Pro's Keyboard and track pad keep crashing?

I've had my MBP for just over a year and I'm now finding the keyboard and track pad randomly cut off?
If I close the laptop for a minute it usually comes back but some times just cuts out completely.
I know its only the keyboard and track pad because if I plug in my wireless keyboard when the crash happens, I can carry on using the mac while the trackpad and keyboard remain out of action????
    Anyone experienced this?
    D

This has happened to me only once, and a close-and-reopen fixed it. Del, next time you get an external mouse and keyboard going, go to the Apple Menu, choose "About This Mac", and then click "More Info...". On the left, under "Hardware" choose "USB." There should be something to the effect of built-in or internal keyboard and trackpad. If those aren't there, it's possible that there's a poor connection to the motherboard (especially if this happens frequently). A Genius would be able to easily identify and probably fix this problem.
Whether they show up in there or not, you should probably also try the usual PRAM reset, and if that fails, the SMC reset.
