Macbook Pro screen and keyboard lights problems

Hi there, I have a macbook pro 15'' late 2011. Lately I realised that the screen does not dim when in a dark room and the keyboard lights do not work either. The keyboard keys work for dimming and lighting the screen, but it does not happen automatically. As for the keyboard lights, pressing the F5 and F6 buttons brings up the image of keyboard lights and they seem to be increasing and decreasing, but in fact nothing happens and the keyboard remains without any lights.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the 13” white and black plastic MacBooks without lighted keyboards that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

    Hello everyone,

I have to turn it left or right to try and get it back on.....same thing if i close my computer and reopen it again it wont wake up from sleep mode.
anyone else having a similer issue? is this software related?

That seems like a loose or failing cable.
You could try a SMC reset:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964  to elimate the controller.

You could try running the Apple HArdware Test, not always definitive however.  If it shows an error code report back.

  • Translucent impromptu possible "hacker" message interrupts current session, locks MacBook Pro screen and demands that I restart by holding down the power button of my LapTop to turn it off first. Any thought? Could this be another way to mess with us?

I was listening to a YouTube video on the history of X15 rocket airplanes. All of sudden, out of the blue a translucent back message drops top down, stops the video, locks up my MacBook Pro screen and demands that I restart my lapTop by first holding down my power switch, then turn the lapTop back on. This has never happened to me before. The message was in black & white, and in about 6 languages: English, French, Spanish, Dutch, Japanese, Chinese. Does any one recognize what this might be?
The Computer turned back on just fine as if nothing had Now I am freeking out that they could be reading my key strokes or something. Could they have used this tactic to install malicious software on my computer by first taking away my ability to do anything about it being that I am not a software engineer? Can any one think of anything simillar? I reported this as a bug to APPLE the regular way, then cleared my Safari cookies, then run software update which returned nothing new as in " your software is up to date at this time."
    Can any one please help?

    Hi stedman1,
Thank you so much. This seems to make sense to me now. I was freaking out a bit that some hacker could be messing with my MacBook Pro. I will be monitoring this issue from now on as it has never happened before.

  • HT3964 MacBook Pro beeps and vertical lights on screen

MacBook Pro 2years old vertical lights come on beeps then I have to restart  anyone help please

Try resetting your PRAM. If that doesn't work, you may need to get it looked at. It could be a power supply or hard drive issue.

  • How do I resize Photoshop - it's too large for my Macbook Pro screen and I can't get to the resize corners?

Photoshop is too large for my Macbook Pro screen.  I cannot access the resize handles - they're off the screen and I can't drag it.  Any solution?

Do you see the red, yellow, and red window buttons? If so click on the green one.
If you don't see them then you are possibly in full screen mode, and pressing the "F" key once or twice allow you to get back to normal mode.

  • Macbook Pro Screen and Graphics Problems

I just bought a macbook pro 15" 2.53 GHz model today. I haven't even had it 12 hours and am having problems. First when I tried the screen saver it messes up, adds big squares where there aren't supposed to be any. So I just tried playing The Sims 3 to test the graphics and that played fine. Now as I am typing this the screen keeps flashing blue. Either making it seem like everything is being highlighted or going all blue for a split second.
    What is going on?
I'm going back to the Apple Store tomorrow, this is not okay.

Make sure to make an appointment if you want to be seen fairly quickly. They should be able to swap you out for a new one right away.

  • Macbook pro screen and case problems

    I have a 2ghz macbook pro 15in.
I have noticed dark spots and then little lines that i would call scratches on the screen. I have applecare till next year in April so i am under applecare but i am wondering if this is covered.
I have a dented case though its dented right on the power supply port. And on the right side of the screen the case is cracked at the bottom just about an inch up fron the corner.
Is this crack covered or will they say its from the drop that caused the dent?
I have noticed that my case in the front pops up on either side and when looking close i noticed that on one side the screw is gone and the place the screw goes into is not there.
Now when it fell it did not fall far and it was on carpet. But niether the case or screen turned like this untill just recently.
    any ideas?

The only way to find out will be to ask. As you know, Apple doesn't cover damage. A trained technician should be able to distinguish between what the fall may have done and something which is a factory defect. The crack is pretty far from the dent, but it's hard to say what someone might think. And I don't know what they would say about the missing screw or what it might have affected. But you should be able to get the screw replaced.
Check and see if your homeowner's policy would cover accidental damage. Or possibly your credit card company if you paid with one. If so, let Apple fix the damage. It's possible that if they decide the crack is unrelated to the fall, they will cover it. If you wait until Applecare is over, you know they won't cover anything. At least ask--you really have nothing to lose. At worst, they'll say no.
    Good luck!

  • Mid 2010 Macbook Pro sleep and external display problem

I recently upgraded to the new 2010 15 inch core i7 Macbook Pro. The problem i have is that it will not detect an external display (23inch Cinema) after waking from sleep. This happens after using the display to extend the desktop and also when using the Macbook in closed mode.
I've managed to get it to detect the display only after either restarting the Macbook completely or by going into energy saver and switching to dedicated graphics then going back to detect display.
It seems that when on integrated graphics it doesn't register that an external display is connected. If i leave a program open and running that causes the dedicated graphics to kick in then it works ok. If i close all programs, shut the macbook pros lid, computer sleeps and external display shuts off. If i click the mouse to wake with lid closed, apple logo lights, machine starts up few seconds later macbook returns to sleep. If i open the screen the machine wakes as normal but the external monitor doesn't.
Any help is much appreciated as its starting to frustrate me now...
    Many thanks
oh and im running OSX 10.6.3

I thought it was intermittent to begin with until i started looking into it. By leaving programs open, like aperture, before i put the machine to sleep it appears to wake the external monitor up without a problem. If i shut all programs or leave basic things open like safari and mail which don't require the dedicated graphics, then upon wake it wont register an external screen is connected.
Manually detecting displays in settings doesn't work.
Disconnecting and reconnecting mini display port doesn't work.
Turning off power to cinema display and powering back up doesn't work.
To get the display going again its either 1) turn off macbook pro and re-boot or 2) re-start the machine then the display is automatically recognised. Or 3) launch a programme that kicks in dedicated graphics then manually go in and detect displays again..... like magic the display then springs to life.
    No ideas anyone??

  • Cleaning macbook pro screen and aluminum unibody

what should i used to clean the aluminum unibody, when it comes to the lcd screen i know alcohol and other solutions are bad for lcd because of the thin flim layer but the macbook pro has glass so it should'nt hurt the screen to use those kind of products.

Through all my different careers, I have learned it takes an oil to break down an oil. I have had this problem where no matter how clean my hands are, and using isoprophil alchohol or iKlear, it still doesnt remove the oil residue off the keyboard or alluminum unibody. So what i did was dampen a cloth with "gook off", which is an oil or sticky residue remover. This actually made it greasier, but after rubbing my Pro with Gook off and then cleaning off the Gook off with alcohol, the residue was gone! I do this every so often when the keyboard gets shiny or I see oil residue below the keyboard where my palms rest. Rub Gook off using hard pressure, then remove the gook off with alcohol or iKlear, or whatever watered down cleaner you prefer. This is the only method that has worked for me and my school that actually works, leaving my Pro and the student laptops looking brand new. I do not recomend this for the screen because I have not tried it yet and have not needed to try it on the screen. Rub hard!

  • Macbook Pro trackpad and keyboard freezes after attempting sleep mode

I bought this computer on April 2008. It has the latest OS X 10.5.6 and it did not accept the trackpad firmware. I tried to install and the software said "this computer does not need this update".
This has been happening a lot when I am using Skype while talking to someone with video and sound. The computer tries to go on sleep mode because I am not typing or touching it - it thinks I am away because I am just talking and watching the person on the other side.
I touch the computer to avoid getting on sleep mode and with that it freezes the trackpad and keyboard. I continue to listen and see the other person and they continue to see me and hear me, but I cannot move the "mouse" cursor on the screen or type anything. Neither can I force to quit anything. The only thing that works is to close the computer and open again, that forces the computer to go into sleep mode then I can make it wake up again by opening it and touching any key on the keyboard.
This have been interrupting Skype calls and a study I am conduting. I have to keep touching the computer trackpad to not let it sleep ever. I am concerned is something with the battery or maybe it needs some kind of firmware.
This is very recent, just started happening this week (March 2009). I have not added any new software or any hardware to the machine.
What can I do to make the trackpad and keyboard stop freezing when the computer tries to sleep?

this is in the wrong category. I added a new message to the right category: MacBook Pro but I don't know how to delete it from here.

  • Macbook pro mouse and keyboard don't work after installing drivers.  Help!

I just installed windows XP SP2 on a macbook pro 2.66 i7 running 10.6.4. I installed the boot camp drivers from my OSX install disk and now neither keyboard, trackpad, nor usb mouse work. Not sure what to do other than delete the partition and start over. Any help is much appreciated!

I have the exact same problem with the same two operating systems and the same exact computer. Needless to say, I would also love to get an answer to this question.

  • Macbook Pro-Mouse and Keyboard cable

So i have a macbook pro running OS X
Specs: 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo
               4 gb 667 mhz ddr2 sdram
               250 gb 7200 rpm
               Dual body design year: 2008
My problem is that the keyboard and mouse have gone out several times and I have found that the sticky note under the battery works for awhile but the cable supplying the keyboard and mouse eventually fail due to a failed design for a machined slot for the cable.  I have first replaced this by buying a new topcase only to have the problem fixed for a year.  Today i have installed a new cable that i purchased online only to have the keyboard and mouse instantly work again flawlessly.  Has apple determined this a faulty design and will they compensate for my misfortune so i can possibly buy a new laptop or should i just switch back to Microsoft? Thanks

I'm just guessing, but I suspect you have a better chance of winning the state lottery than of Apple giving you the price of a new MBP for your old machine with its array of do-it-yourself band-aids. This is probably true even if your state has no lottery.
