MacBook Pro screen freezes with error report

Today, my screen froze suddenly, and since the I have this problem reoccurring in certain intervals. I ran /sbin/fsck -fy and got the following results. I assume this is something with the processor? Would be nice if someone could help me out here.

I have to say that I have a bad battery, but as long as it is plugged in, it shouldn't be a problem?
Also, i unfortunately dont have the hardware diagnosis dvd and cant get it to run by holding down d
Thanks!

This log is showing an input/output error with the hard disk. It means that your hard disk is damaged.
If you have a backup of your files, I recommend you to install a new hard drive. It can be done at a reseller or Apple Store, but it's cheaper to do this yourself. Any 2'5" SATA hard drive will work, so you can have a look for hard disks at OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/

  • My macbook pro keeps freezing with vertical lines on the screen

I have a 2010 macbook pro that has worked wonderfully until now.  As of late it keeps freezing with vertical lines across the screen.  To me this indicates a hardware problem, but I ran a diagnostic (restarted while holding D) and it didn't find any errors.  It seems that it happens when I move or bump my macbook, leading me to think it may possibly be a disk problem, but I'm not sure how to check this.  Anybody else ever have this problem or could suggest a fix for it?

You can try a pram reset, which might help with the display, but the bumoing thing is what concerns me.
    PRAM reset:
Power down, power back up and hold the following keys before the start up chime.
option, command, P, R,(no commas) continue to hold these keys till you hear the start up chime 2 times then release.
Reboot see if this helps, the bumping part scares me.
    Hope this helps

  • Mid 2012 13" i5 Macbook Pro Screen Freeze, Shut Down, 3 Beeps!

Hi guys, my macbook recently started freezing and then shutting down giving 3 beeps afterward. I know 3 beeps is traditionally RAM, but here is a picture of my screen when it freezes. Do you think its GPU and logic board problem or is it really the RAM? Maybe something else? Anyways would love some feedback, going to take it in to the Geek Squad as it still should be covered with a 1 year warranty since I purchased it in February of this year.

I will be taking it in next week, just wanted to have an idea of what it is. This is my second Macbook pro, my first I have had to get fixed 6 or 7 times in a couple years but Apple and Bestbuy wouldn't replace it, even though the first problem happened during the 1 year warranty... After the last time we had it fixed they finally gave me a big discount on another one, but now this one is having problems... I thought MacBooks were supposed to be very reliable! I am not hard on them at all, never been dropped once, not even a scratch on them. I don't get it. Would still like to hear some more thoughts, especially if you have seen a screen like this one! Thanks!

  • Why does my Macbook Pro keep freezing with the spinning beach ball?

    Hi,
This issue started yesterday. Every minute or so or less, my Mac will freeze up and I cant do anything, and then the beach ball will pop up for 5-60 seconds before going away, my machine unfreezes, and it happens again pretty quickly.

    Troubleshoot the spinning beach ball

  • MacBook pro screen blury with a splash of colors starting in the middle

Hi, I am a new Mac user, and I've had my macbook pro for 6 months now. Yesterday, when I started the computer, the graphics were blurry and then there was a splash of colors (rainbow of colors) covering the middle to upper part of the screen. The rest of the screen was blurry and a bit blinking.
I had been moving around with the laptop the whole but I cannot figure out what happened or what I can do to fix this.
    Please help. Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Go to System Preferences>Universal Access and be sure the Zoom is turned off and the Enhance Contrast slider is all the way to the left. Sometimes UA features get turned on accidentally with disconcerting results.
Also, if you can, run the extended version of the Apple Hardware test. You may get a clue in the form of an error code, which could indicate a hardware problem. You should still be under the one year warranty, which should cover whatever is wrong. If UA has not been turned on accidentally, you might have a graphics chip problem or possibly a display problem which Apple would need to fix.
    Good luck!

  • MacBook Pro screen freezing...

A several times a week my screen just freezes and requires me to hold down the power button to shut it off and power it back on.  I could be typing, watching a webinar or the screensaver might be going and the computer just freezes.  I've had the machine for about 2.5 years.  I was hoping it might be software related maybe from the Lion upgrade or maybe a remnant of an app I had deleted a while back.  I wiped my hard drive and did a clean install of Lion.  I manually added back all apps and didn't use anything from Time Machine.  The drive isn't making any noises and isn't running hot.  Not sure what is could be?
    Ideas?

BTW, I JUST saw this when reading about the GFXCardstsus app (I don't have this installed yet). I had my power settings at better battery life previously and now have it switched to higher performance.
Apple’s recent MacBook Pro models boast battery life that’s so much better than their predecessors’ that casual users may not worry about finding ways to conserve energy. With three or four hours of real-world use between charges, plenty of juice is available for visits to a coffeeshop, many domestic airline flights, or untethered work away from a desk.
However, if you plan to be away from power for longer stretches, or if your battery indicator dips into the low double-digit percentages, battery conservation becomes much more top-of-mind. You can extend your MacBook Pro’s battery life by taking advantage of the system’s capability to switch between its integrated and discrete graphics processing units (GPUs). More specifically, you can use Cody Krieger’s free gfxCardStatus to force your laptop to use its battery-sipping integrated GPU.
Some quick background: All 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro models from 2010 and later, as well as 2008 and 2009 models outfitted with an Nvidia GeForce 9400M/9600M GT, dynamically switch between a low-power (and lower-performance) integrated Intel graphics chip and a power-hungrier (and better-performance) discrete Nvidia or AMD graphics card, based on the needs of running applications. The problem is, some applications you wouldn't think need a lot of graphics power actually rely on features such as OS X’s Core Animation that require the discrete graphics card. So even if you’re working from battery power and trying to minimize battery usage (by turning down screen brightness, for example), you may still be using discrete-graphics-card cycles—and, thus, more energy.
The only way to make sure you’re using the integrated GPU is to quit applications that rely on the discrete GPU, since OS X doesn’t let you choose to stick to the latter. The Energy Saver pane of System Preferences lets you disable the Automatic Graphics Switching option, but doing so actually forces the computer to use the discrete GPU, an option that drains the battery even faster.
The solution is gfxCardStatus, which runs as a systemwide menu. The menu’s icon reveals, at a glance, which GPU is in use: i for integrated or d for discrete. You can also configure gfxCardStatus to display aGrowl notification whenever the GPU changes.
By watching for these changes, you can get a better idea of which tasks cause your MacBook Pro to use the power-hungry GPU. But the most valuable part of gfxCardStatus to me is that its menu lists which specific running apps are dependencies, or using discrete graphics, so I can quit them when I need to eke out more time from the battery’s charge.
If you’re especially worried about battery life, gfxCardStatus lets you force the issue by choosing Discrete Only or Integrated Only from the utility’s menu. The former is simply a shortcut for disabling the aforementioned Automatic Graphics Switching setting; the latter actually forces apps to use limited resources, as if the apps were running on a Mac, such as the 13-inch MacBook Pro, with only an integrated GPU.
Before using the Integrated Only option, though, make sure you quit all applications listed under Dependencies, as some programs don’t take kindly to having the expected GPU pulled out from under them. In my testing, BusyCal 1.6, for example, wouldn’t advance the month correctly, and Twitterrific froze my machine. Restarting BusyCal fixed the problem, and it turns out the program offers an optional setting to not use Core Animation. I had to reboot my Mac following the Twitterrific stall, but otherwise nothing else was harmed.
(It would be nice if gfxCardStatus popped up an optional alert warning that using only the integrated GPU can cause problems, so folks not paying attention—or writers deliberately playing with fire in the name of science—don’t get burned.)
If you’re regularly off the power cord, you can also have gfxCardStatus automatically choose integrated, discrete, or dynamic GPU modes based on whether your MacBook Pro is running from battery or AC power. However, I admit to being leery of this feature, since, for example, a dependent application could be using discrete graphics when your MacBook Pro goes to sleep, but be limited to integrated graphics when the computer wakes up. I prefer to see which applications I should temporarily quit (or for which I should find alternatives that support dynamic switching).
The battery gains from using only integrated graphics depend on which applications you use, but I estimate I get about 20 percent longer battery life on my MacBook Pro by closing dependent apps when working off battery power. And it’s sort of fun to watch OS X’s menubar battery indicator increase its charge and time estimates when my MacBook Pro settles into integrated graphics.

  • Macbook pro screen freezing/flickering   peripheral failure

    Hey guys
I use my Macbook Pro both at home for music production and live as an instrument. Recently I have been having problems, but for some reason these have never materialised at home - only in the live situation. I shall try to give as much info as possible, but I'm no use with Macs having been raised with windows machines.
    Mac OS X 10.6.8
2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
I have around 13GB free HD space
It is second hand and therefore I have no idea about warranty. I have had the machine for over a year.
    I THINK it's a 2008 17" model, although I am not sure.
    Peripherals at home:
    Digidesign Mbox 2 - USB
    USB Mouse (third party)
    M audio Oxygen 8 V2 keyboard - USB
HD TV as a second screen - DVI - VGA adapter
    Live:
Novation Nio 2|4 uadio interface - USB
    Novation Launchpad - USB
    M audio Oxygen 8 V2 - USB
(Software wise I a running ableton 8 suite with izotope stutter edit. I average about 6% cpu usage)
Recently, my audio interfaces have begun to fail, but only in the live environment. I can switch the Mbox for the Nio at home and there are no problems whatsoever. 2 shows in a row this had failed, so I made sure to test all the equipment extensively. After 2 days of using the Nio as my soundcard using a different USB cable and slot, I assumed the problem was fixed.
On friday night we were playing a show, and mid set the screen froze with glitchy sections - looked like someone had broken the matrix. The screen began flickering in and out very fast in a strobe like fashion. My peripherals were still working fine, so I continued with the show in the hope that I could just control the session from them. Moments later, the audio failed, ad the system eventually cut out. I attempted to buy time and boot up again, but the same thing happened almost instantly.
Now that i've had a chance to get home and try it out, it has been working for hours at a time until eventually doing the same thing. I have found that most the time my usb mouse will remain responsive, yet I am unable to click on anything. Again, the sound generally keeps working, but one by one the peripherals fail. The screen flickering has only been temporary in the home setting, and does not sustain throughout the failure.
I'm generally poor with electronics, but the general consensus seems to be that it may be some kind of electro magnetism/static/I don't know effecting it live? I have never had a single problem with the machine until now. These failures have occured both running on battery and from mains power.

You may be right that a part of the problem is due to external electro-magnetic interference, but could also be heat build up, and the fact that at home it runs for hours before an issue starts, heat is probably a part of the problem.  If you can, stop by an Apple store genius bar and let the techs run some diagnostics, explain what is happening and see if they can isolate the issue.  You may want to leave it with them for a few hours and let it sit there and run to see if heat is an issue.

  • Late-2011 MacBook Pro 13" Freezes with Clicking Noise

    Hi guys,
I bought a MacBook Pro for my birthday in April earlier this year (the model is the Late 2011 i5 13 inch model). Recently I have been encountering a problem where randomly a clicking noise will start and repeat every 5 or so seconds. On top of this, the laptop completely freezes, with the spinning beachball, however I am still able to move the mouse around. The only way to get the clicking to stop and to restore functionality is to force shut down the computer by holding the power button, which presents the problem of potential work loss.
I have searched the internet for people who are having similar problems and have come across some others who seem like they have the same problem, but I cannot be sure. Could this mean that my hard drive is failing? I'm certain that it's not the SuperDrive as I am still able to insert DVDs and hear the drive spin up and the laser assembly move while the clicking is going on. In the absence of other mechanical components in the computer (besides the fan), and with the freezing, I assume that the noise is coming from the HDD.
Has anyone else had anything like this happen to them? And on top of that, is it worth taking it to a Genius Bar? As I do not have a way to reproduce the problem (it occurs at random with no obvious trigger), do you think they will be able to do anything, or am I on my own?
Sorry for being a stereotypical 'register-only-for-help' person, but I rely on this MacBook for my college work and cannot afford for it to be broken.
I hope you guys can give me advice.

Okay, I'll backup my files and take it to the Apple store. Thanks for the help.

  • Macbook Pro Screen blink with Genius bar. What should i expect?

    Hello!,
I have to say in my almost 20 years of being a mac user i've never had a problem with any of my mac's. I now have a minor issue with a brand new Macbook Pro that i bought on New years day. The screen has an odd blink on the upper 1/3 portion of the screen. So i've decided to make an appointment with my local Apple store to show it to a genius. I was actually able to capture the blink on video so that i can show it to the genius.
Now my concern. If its a software issue, thats fine, i'll wait for a patch. But i feel weird about Apple fixing the machine. I feel like the laptop will lose its "magic". The receipt said there is a 14 day return policy, i guess im over that otherwise i would have paid the restocking fee to get a brand new one. Do you think I am just being dumb?

    Rany,
This is a support forum. Your question isn't really something that anyone that here can answer. Only someone that knows you will be able to say if you're being "dumb"
Of course it's a bummer when you get a brand new computer... especially a high end one like a MacBook Pro... and you find you have a problem with it. Apple's service has always been among the best. If you do have a hardware issue... bring it in and have them take care of it for you. If you get it back and discover there is something more wrong with it than when you brought it in, then address it. I wouldn't not get it serviced for fear of it losing its "magic". If you're just slightly over your return period... there's no harm is asking them if they would be willing to replace it. There's no guaranty that they will, but they have the flexibility to do so. The worst case scenario is that they fix the one you have.

  • "A graphics problem has been detected" Macbook Pro screen white with horizontal red stripes

This issue arrived out of no where. I'll be using my Macbook Pro then all of a sudden the screen starts glitching and i can't control anything so I'm forced to power off my computer. When I turn it back on the screen will display the Apple logo with a white screen and horizontal red stripes running through the screen (as pictured below). I have to keep shutting down the computer and powering it back on until it asks me to reset my Filevault password then it might work.
After I reset my password it finally restarts and appears to work with the image below displayed on the screen. I spent over 2000 dollars on this laptop, I shouldn't have to wonder if my laptop will work long enough to get something done or have to keep resetting it for days and be computerless. This is crazy! I hope Apple starts paying attention to this issue as I've seen multiple posts about this issue coming for other owners of MacBook Pros from 2011.

The logic board is faulty and will have to be replaced.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • MacBook Pro screen black with cruiser

I turned on my MacBook Pro today to find it starts up all normal then it just goes to a black screen with the mouse cruiser... I've tried shutting it down and turning it back on a couple of times but it just does the same it was fine last night when I was using it. Also the brightness goes up and down and it makes noises when I press most of the keys /: please help

    Hello Olivepal,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
I understand that your computer is not booting like normal.  I'd like you to do the two processes below, first starting with the SMC reset, followed by resetting the NVRAM.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro 13 freeze with the samsung p2770 monitor?

My MacBook Pro 13 (late 2010) works fine, but when I use the Samsung P2770 external monitor through the DVI port is will suddenly freeze.  The display goes black, the keyboard lights up, and only a hard reset will bring it back.  Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

Try unplugging your charger from your MacBook.  Weird bug but that fixed it for me... Kinda stupid though.

  • Macbook PRo screen brightens with white

My macbook pro is doing something weird. lets say i log into my account, my deaktop has a nice red flame background and its a good red.. then ill do a fast user switching to my girlfriends account which is fine but when i switch back to mine.. the red background develops into a pinkish red. no longer the nice red it normally has.. its kind of like the screen had a white film pulled over it. Is anyone having this problem? I disabled alot of the automatic dim the screen options in both energy saver and monitor options.

YES! Thank you! thank you! You rock! Wish I could buy you a beer or a dinner at olive gardens!
