MacBook Pro sees wireless networks but cannot join any. Connection timeout error

I have a MacBook Pro here that sees all wireless networks but cannot join any. It gives a connection timeout error with every one.
Internet access via ethernet cable works just fine.

It's not uncommon for you to "see" a great many networks, dozens even, yet you not be able to connect to any of them even if they are "open" (no lock icon). There may be a number of reasons for that, such as they're too weak for a reliable connection, or the router may limit connections to only specified devices.
There is only one way to achieve a reliable network connection, and that's for you to connect to your own wireless router. Even that doesn't work if its signal is too weak or if there are many competing wireless networks in your area.
If it's your own AirPort Base Station you're trying to use but can't, the latter could be the reason. The only way to mitigate the effects of wireless interference is to use 802.11n and 5 GHz whenever practicable. Even today you may only find one or two 5 GHz networks being used in an otherwise "crowded" area.

I have just acquired an iMac desktop (about 4 years old). I want to connect to my Apple airport wireless network, but cannot remember the password. How can I access the password or, if necessary, reset it. I already use a MacBook Pro and an iPad on the network and don't want to jeopardize what already works well. I am not all that computer literate.

How can I access the password or, if necessary, reset it.
Read the user manual that came w/your Airport router or you can cross-post in one of the  AirPort Forums for instructions.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

I am connected to my wireless network but cannot access the internet. Any ideas?

Your router may not have given your iPad a valid IP address. Go to Settings > Wifi > your network name and touch the ">" to the right to see the network details. If the IP address starts with 169 or is blank then your router didn't provide an IP address and you won't be able to access the Internet.
Sometimes the fix can be as simple as restarting your router (remove power for 30 seconds and restart). Next, reset network settings on your iPad (Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings) and then attempt to connect. In other cases it might be necessary to update the router's firmware with the latest from the manufacturer's support web pages.
If you need more help please give more details on your network, i.e., your router make, model and version, the wifi security being used (WEP, WPA, WPA2), etc.

If you used Bootcamp Assistant, did you download and install the Windows Support software (drivers) in accordance with the Bootcamp instructions?

  • NB200 Can connect to wireless networks, but cannot connect to the internet

I have been able to connect my Win XP netbook to my secure wireless network at home, other people's networks and public networks like the library and McDonalds. This week I'm away from home and discovered that while I can still connect to a number of different wireless networks, I cannot connect to the internet using Internet Explorer.
I've had this problem once before and fixed it by reinstalling Windows XP and all my other software. I have no idea why it has happened again. I'm hoping for a less drastic solution to the problem..?

    Hi Nakia,
    > I cannot connect to the internet using Internet Explorer.
Have you tested other browsers like Mozilla Firefox and does this work?
As MasterG wrote try to renew the IP address using the commend line.
Last week I had a similar problem and I could solve it by updating the WLAN driver. Just remove the driver, restart the notebook and install the newest one. :)

  • Windows XP laptop sees wireless network but won't connect

I set up a wireless network on my airport extreme using my MacBook. The McBook runs great on the wireless network. My old Dell laptop running Windows XP sees the wireless network I created (with full signal strength) but every time I hit "connect" I get the following error message, "Windows is unable to connect to the selected network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available networks, and try to connect again." When I referesh the list, the wireless network is still there, and i still cannot connect, getting the same error message.
    Any suggestions?

Hello apetera. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Per chance are you using WEP for your wireless encryption?
If so, one of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling the use of simple easy to remember WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys. The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a non-Apple client and vice versa.

  • Need Help Connecting New MacBook Pro with Wireless Network Password

    Hi Linksys Community,
I would like to ask for your help and advice.
I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro, OS X, Version 10.8.3.
I need to setup a password to the wireless internet network (I've successfully done this)
    I have a Wireless G,  WRT54G Router.
When I setup the password, I'm not able to connect to the internet with my new MacBook Pro, which is running Mac OS X Version 10.8.3.  I get the message 'cannot connect to Internet, connection timeout) However, I'm able to connect to the internet with an older MacBook Pro, and my iPad. The password works fine with other models.
Would anyone be able to help me troubleshoot what is going on, or how I can solve this problem?
I would like to be able to have a password on my network, and use the internet with my new MacBook Pro.
I have read about manually adding in the MAC address of computers, and setting up a Wireless MAC fiter.
Does anyone think this would solve the problem?  if so, how can I find out the MAC address of my MacBook Pro?
Thanks in advance for you help and time!

    Hi,
    Thanks for your response.
Yes, my computer connects when your network is open (no password set)?
    I used WPA Pre-Shared Key.
Do you know how I could check if my new MacBook Pro is compatible with this?
    Thanks!

I am having the exact same problem. I tried your suggestion and I was able to connect via afp:// + ip to the invisible mac book pro. Still can find it over the network though via the finder.

  • Macbook pro "breaks" wireless network

    greetings,
whenever i'm home, i use my macbook pro to connect to our wireless network, a network that is usually only used by PCs (one running Network Magic).
However, whenever i connect, it works great but sporadically it will "break" the network, causing the router to be reset. when it's down, it doesn't work for any computer. but this only happens when my computer is connected. also, this is the second router, so it shouldn't be that.
is this caused by my wireless card or os?

I've been experiencing a very similar issue.
    I have a MBP from Nov 2007. I have a Billion 7402GL wireless/modem-router.
I have a 3 year old Acer Aspire 5672 that I am using as nothing more than a Windows Media Center gateway. In other words the Acer's wireless connects to my main desktop in the next room, where all my TV shows are stored and shared out to it. It is then connected to the AV inputs on my TV.
For the last month or so, if I am streaming something through to the Acer, if I then power up my MBP (where the WLAN is set to immediately connect) it appears that the MBP immediately consumes up all the signal/bandwidth to the wireless router, because the playback on the Acer either stutters, or freezes, which then crashes MCE.
However once I disable WLAN on the MBP, the issue goes away.
The strange thing is I have not altered the modem's firmware, nor any drivers on the Acer. I'd be willing to blame it on a Windows Update for Vista, but that wouldn't explain why I only suffer issues when the MBP's WLAN is operational.

  • IMac does not recognize MacBook Pro over wireless network

    Hi,
I have an iMac running MAC OS X version 10.5.7. It is connected to the Internet via an Airport Extreme Base Station. I just bought a 13-in MacBook Pro that runs the same version of MAC OS X. I connect it to the same wireless network. The MacBook Pro recognizes the iMac (there is an icon of the iMac in the Shared Section of the Finder window). The iMac, however, does not recognize the MacBook Pro. If you have come across this problem and have a solution, I would be most grateful for your advice.
    Regards,
    MTL

I'm having a similar problem with an Intel iMac and a G4 iBook (both running Leopard 10.5.7) since the recent replacement of the iMac's hard drive. Occasionally the iMac will 'see' and allow me to connect to the laptop, but often the connection just drops out, and then I can't find the iBook any more. The iBook, on the other hand, can't detect the iMac at all. I know I have all the settings right - before the HD replacement, everything worked fine in both directions. Interestingly, in the 'WINS' settings in network preferences, the iMac's 'name' bears no relation (just a list of numbers and letters) to the computer's actual name, while the iBook uses the first word of its own name. It's frustrating, as I have to synchronise my work between the two on a daily basis. I can't get them to connect via ethernet cable either.

  • MacBook can see wireless network, but can't connect; no error message

This one has got me stumped: my father has a new D-Link wireless router. His Windows laptop connects to it just fine, but neither of our Apple laptops (an old PowerBook G4 and a brand new MacBook Pro) will connect to it. The network does appear in the Airport menu, but when I select it, nothing happens. It pauses for a second, and then I'm left disconnected from all wireless networks. No error message, no connection, no check appears next to the network's name. No security of any kind is enabled, and I've turned off "n" support on the router. I'm at a loss, and can't seem to find anyone with similar problems. Any ideas?
The console gives me the following:

  • Printing with Macbook Pro over wireless network and PC.

I just got my 17" Macbook Pro and this is my first Mac. I was using an Alienware laptop before and I was printing through the PC desktop in the bedroom hooked to a Epson printer thruogh a USB cable. I was curious if it is possible to set the Macbook up so that I can print through the PC. As far as I know Virtual PC isn't universal and only works with the power pc powerbooks, g4, g5, and etc. If someone could help me find the best alternative at the lowest cost I would greatly appreciate it.

I found system preferences but once I get there I
can't find the internet and network.
wait. in the System Preferences window, the third row down should be "Internet & Network"... the second icon from the left should be "Network".
are you saying you don't see the Network icon?
    I clicked show
all and it doesn't add anything.
correct that's just a "return to the main menu"-type thingy - i.e. if you click on "Appearance" from System Preferences window, and then decide that you want to go back to the System Preferences main window, you'd just click on "Show All"
    What am I missing?
I'm brand new to OS X.
well, i don't think you need Virtual PC... but i think we should first figure out why you're not able to get to the network setup section of system prefs....
    cheers
