Macbook Pro - Serial Number question

I have a Macbook Pro (week 17) that I picked up the beginning of June. It does not have the glossy screen. I registered my MBP and my AppleCare. When I put my serial number into the field on the support site about how much longer my warranty will last, it says I have a "MacBook Pro (15-inch Glossy)." Is this an error or are all MBPs considered glossy after a certain date even if the screen is not glossy. Has anybody else noticed this?
Thanks

This seems to be very common. I've seen the same thing all along for my 15" with matte screen. The web site reported it as glossy when I registered the MBP, when it was at Apple for a repair, and when I enrolled my AppleCare Protection Plan. Several others have reported this as well.
I wouldn't worry about it. I'm not sure they can correct it until they correct whatever overall glitch is making it so common.

should i give my macbook pro serial number to my employer

If your employer bought it, it is theirs and they have a right to request what they want (e.g., for inventory purposes).  If you bought it, it is yours.  You can then decide if it is in your interest to let them know the serial number.  I don't know your work environment but if somebody from IT came by would it make sense they be able to uniquely identify it as belonging to you?

  • I cannot find my MacBook Pro serial number anywhere!?

I just recently purchased my MacBook Pro from a seller locally on Craigslist. I couldn't find the serial number on the surface of the laptop (under the battery) or through the system:
I have been searching all over Apple's website for this, but I cannot find any information on it!
Please don't tell me it's "stolen" because every product I have registered goes through fine and I get no error. Additionally, the guy I bought it from said that he had a fresh installation of the new OSX Lion and it didn't give a serial number.
I'm new to the Apple Mac products, and when I saw my cousin's old MacBook I was able to find his serial number was engraved behind his battery.
Mine doesn't show anything engraved at all, besides what model #'s the laptop contains.
    Further info:
    15"
    Model #: A1226

The 1st picture shows as such because I clicked it. I'm assuming this is what you're talking about:
I was stupid because I completely forgot when I met up with him that I texted him asking what the serial # was and he didn't reply.
Then when I met up with him, he even told me to go over the mac, test it out, and ensure myself that I was happy with it. As I looked for the serial number, I didn't see it, and that's when I asked him why it was missing.
He said the number erased because he had to do a "fresh installation" of the OSX Lion. I read in other articles that people have had to do this with the older MBP models (aka core 2 duo) and it has caused the serial number to erase from the specs.
As for the last picture I put, I just noticed that there was something there...then I thought to myself that's where the badge would be.
I've been looking all over in Google for my model and where the serial number should be, but can't seem to find it...
I guess I'll deal with it as is...
Only weird thing is, that if it were "stolen," then why have I been able to update the software from Apple without any issues?

  • Why is my macbook pro serial number showing as invalid

I have just bought a new 13" retina display Macbook Pro from an online seller. Trying to check it out, apple's website says the serial number is invalid. What the **** have I bought?!

You may have to check the online reseller directly and ask about this matter.
And note they have a different policy of returns and exchanges than Apple
itself. A retail Apple Store or the Apple online (company) store is different
than an authorized independent retailer who resells product. So you should
check with them about a return or replacement. They may also be able to
figure out why they sent you a product that cannot be officially verified.
    Good luck in this matter...!

  • Can Apple remotely activate 'Find My Mac' if given a MacBook Pro serial number?

I have a registered MacBook Pro that was stolen on 9-11.
I live on an American AF Base in Okinawa, Japan and filed a police report.
I have my serial number and have 'Find My Mac' apps for iPad, iPhone and MacBook.
My Apple ID recognizes that I have the feature fo the iPad & iPod, but NOT the MacBook Pro.
How do I get them to REMOTELY push the app to my MacBook when this PUNK gets online?

You can sync data without enabling "Find My Mac":

  • Why has my macbook pro serial number changed after getting it repaired?

I just noticed that the serial number in the 'about this mac' information has a different serial number to what is on the back of the macbook pro, which is the same serial number on my apple care/phone . I had a lot of issues with my macbook pro it was sent to repair in july 2013 then in august 2013. Why has the serial number changed? I tried using my original serial number to use the online apple care service however it did not recgonice my serial number when I tried the new serial number it regconised it but said I did not have apple care but I do. I don't know what the apple team have done to my macbook as it requires to go in for repair again.

Was it repaired at Apple or an authorized service provider?
You need to contact the repair place/store and/or call Apple and make them aware of the problem - sooner rather than later. Make sure you give them the repair/case number so they can find the paperwork for it.
I had a logic board replaced and the tech also did not do anything - I called Apple and the tech came back to my house to take care of it. It's important because you want to make sure that your Applecare is being associated with the right serial number.

My Mac PRO (serial number    <edited by host>) has installed OS X Lion 10.7.5. Can I update it to OS Mountain Lion to work Airplay with apple TV?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The serial number doesn't tell us anything. Open  > About this Mac > More Info, and tell us the first two lines of the window, where you should see MacBook Pro and a line below, which indicates the model you have:
That's what I see on my Mac. AirPlay Mirroring requires an Early 2011 or newer MacBook Pro, so if you see Early 2011 MacBook Pro or newer in that line, you can use AirPlay Mirroring. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404
If you want to upgrade, make a backup of your files and check that your applications are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com Then, open the Mac App Store and purchase Mountain Lion. When the download finishes, the Mountain Lion installer will appear, so follow the steps. After upgrading, you will see the AirPlay icon on the menu bar.
If you don't want to upgrade, you can use an application like Beamer or AirParrot

If you still have the receipt or other proof of purchase, you can ask Apple to send you the serial. Otherwise, bad luck mate.. Good news is, you can now buy Logic Pro 9 from App Store for just 199 USD

  • I'm looking to buy a new Macbook Pro, and have questions about the Applecare extended warranty?

I'm looking to buy a new Macbook Pro, and have questions about the Applecare extended warranty? I want to know if the 3 year extended warranty covers what damage. Like water damage, accidental damage, lost or stolen macbook, manufactory defects, or any other kind of damage, maybe be even cosmetic damage. Can anyone help me?

If you are talking about features of the MBP itself, as long as you are not looking at  the Retina models, then the memory you can upgrade yourself for a lot less than Apple charges, and that does not affect the warranty as Apple considers memory a user permitted upgrade.  Great sources are Crucial and OWC, both are Mac specialists and have on-line videos on how to do the install.
If the 15" is what you are looking at, a good upgrade is the 7200 rpm hard drive, gives a little better performance over the standard 5400 rpm drive.
The Hi Res screen is good if you do a lot of graphics work.
Comparing the 13" amd 15" you will notice the 15" has a second, discrete graphic processor...helps when you get into heavy duty videos, games, graphics...but keep in mind that kicking in the second processor uses a lot of power and will run the battery down faster.
If you are looking at the Retina models, then keep in mind there are no post-purchase upgrade options...you have to buy with everything you want at the start.
    Just some thoughts.

Provide the computer's firmware password. If you don't know what it is, contact the person you got the computer from or Apple.

  • 15" MacBook Pro, serial No. W8*******YJX

    Good evening,
After making an  appointment, I visited the local apple store to discuss a problem apple acknowledged some time ago.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377?viewlocale=es_ES
Four years ago I bought a 15" MacBook Pro, serial No. W8*******YJX, but it stopped working 2 days ago. In the apple store they quickly found that the problem is caused by a known problem of this specific model.
I understood this problem was addressed by apple up to one year ago under some extended warranty. However now the price to repair my MacBook would be around 500Euro.
I was advised to contact apple care by the store manager Tristán Doutre-Roussel, of the Apple store gran plaza 2, in Madrid.
However, the person I spoke to at apple care told me that they are not responsible for the manufacturing fault of my MacBook.
At the apple store I was told this failure can be repaired but it was not recommended for various reasons.
I'm absolutely angry and feel cheated by apple. I've been a long time customer owning various apple products.
    iPad (serial No. DM*******K10)
    iPhone (serial No. DN********TC0)
I'm very careful in using my MacBook as I earn my living in using it. As a result I only use it for specific activities which is probably the reason why this issue hasn't occurred sooner.
I can't understand why I have not been contacted pro actively by apple to bring it in for repair during the period in which this fault was discovered and being repaired free of charge.
I also don't understand why there was a time limit set on this repair period when it was an apparent common failure.
At this point I want to make a formal complaint as recommended by the store manager. I understood that in similar cases, exceptions were granted and apple provided a solution where the main circuit board was swapped and I know for a fact that this still can be done.
As this is clearly acknowledged to be a manufacturing defect, I feel that apple can not distance themselves from this.
I hope to receive a positive answer and I trust to find a solution within a short time frame because I need to use it for my work and don't want to buy a new computer.
    With best regards,
    José Ignacio Asensio.

    1. You are not addressing Apple, this is a user to user forum.
    2. You have yet to give any information about what your problem is.
    3. Don't post your serial numbers in public, I will ask for them to be removed.
