MacBook Pro - Set of issues

They always come in a set of 3 for me.
I'll put a little bit of history in for you to understand/follow.
I had a MBP and sent it in 4 times for the same problem, then they finally replaced it.
This replacement Mac was perfect till 6 months in.
I experienced some problems with the display, and the mouse.
They replaced them for me, but when I got it back the keyboard wasn't working and it was getting rather hot.
I sent it in and they did some tests. Fixed the keyboard but couldn't find anything wrong with the CPU.
It was still getting extremely hot, so I sent it back in. They replaced the CPU and the thermal module.
Still getting hot results, I sent it back in and they said there was no problem.
About a week later the heat issues began to fade. (Thank god)
Now the issues:
Issue number 1 is the CD drive.
For the past 2 weeks the CD drive has been accessing itself (such as the sound it makes when you turn it on from a cold boot or wake it from sleep) at random intervals during use.
I can't replicate this.
It can happen when a program is running, when it's sitting idle or when there's stress. (Happens in both OS X and Windows)
There's also no pressure around the CD drive when it happens.
This is becoming increasinly annoying as it happens during lectures and it's rather loud, and pauses what ever is going on for the access to happen.
(Eg, I'm typing in Pages. The CD drive accesses and i'm still typing, the letters don't show up. And I also type really fast so it breaks my concentration. :P)
Issue number 2 is the Display.
This has only happened under stress. Able to replicate with the Adobe Media Encoder CS4 program, and unable to replicate under CoD4 and other games (eg, random times).
I'll be sitting working (or playing in this case) and the display will just become black, but the LED backlighting is still active. The only way to get it back out of this is to put it to sleep by closing it and opening it back up.
Issue number 3 is the CPU... Again
I sent it in because it was getting extremely hot (up to 100*c) and the fans didn't really kick in. They stayed around the 2000rpm mark.
This time, it doesn't get hot, but it gets very, very sluggish at random times.
As well with this one, I can't replicate it either.
This is the 3rd set of problems and 5th time I'll be sending in my Mac for repairs. It's still under (extended) warranty and I'm getting rather annoyed at the problems that keep coming up.
What should I do? Ask for a replacement or just send it in for repairs.
I'm honestly fed up with it all.
I've done 3 reinstallations with Snow Leopard and minimal programs, but the problems are still there.

Looking at more detail:
For the past 2 weeks the CD drive has been accessing itself (such as the sound it makes when you turn it on from a cold boot or wake it from sleep) at random intervals during use.
That's normal. It changes lenses to be able to read and write to different media, and then resets itself to the default occasionally.
This is becoming increasinly annoying as it happens during lectures and it's rather loud, and pauses what ever is going on for the access to happen.
That may not be normal. Have you been very careful to follow the basic rules of CD media use in this thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10532189#10532189
If not, you may have to replace your optical drive.
I'd get back to your power manager of your Mac.
I sent it in because it was getting extremely hot (up to 100*c) and the fans didn't really kick in. They stayed around the 2000rpm mark.
This is definitely a power manager issue. I'd get a surge protector, seeing as your father is unable to replicate any issues that could happen electrically. There may be surges caused by unforeseen factors.

  • I'm trying to recover the network password for my Time Capsule so that I can connect another device (a PC) to it.  I have my Macbook pro set to connect automatically and the password is hidden.  How can I find out what it is.

My issue is that I'm trying to connect a PC to my wireless network run off of a Time capsule/airport router.  My macbook pro connects fine but the network password is hidden and set to autoconnect.  I thought I wrote the password down but when I try to connect the PC laptop and type in the timecapsule network PW is doesn't work.  Trying to verify if the passwird I wrote down is correct but there doesn't seem to be a way to recover this.
Does anyone out there in the community know how to do this? (or do I just have to do a reset on the time capsule

  • MacBook Pro 17-inch issues with Mavericks

I have just installed (twice) the new Mavericks on my MacBook Pro 17-Inch from late 2011. Sporting the 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7 with 4GB of 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM. Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB.
All that being said, it's running a bit slow (seems to be a commin issue). But that's not why I'm posting. My question is a permissions issue. I have since run permissions fixes since installing, and yet, I'm being told, for example from iTunes, "The folder "iTunes" is on a locked disk or you do not have write permission for this folder." Then iTunes, expectedly, just shuts down. And for Photoshop CS5, "An unexpected and unrecoverable problem has occurred. Photoshop will now exit". InDesign opens, but so slowly, it's effectively useless. I go to quit out, and it hangs up trying to shut down. Illustrator is the same; opens slowly, hard to work with, seems to crash while shutting down. My first install, Safari wouldn't even launch. Now it seems to launch okay and function okay.
So, anyone have any idea why my permissions seem to be borked?
As an aside, before I upgraded, I did have problems with preferences being saved in Safari and LinoType font utility.
Thanks for any input that might help me out. I have lots of freelance art to do, and right now, no machine to do it with.

If you're having trouble making changes to files that are inside your home folder (represented by a house icon in the sidebar of a Finder window), or if you can't get changes to the settings of an application to stick, then please see below.
    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR..; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_; chmod -R -N ~ $_; } 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if it frightens you, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password dialog will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
In the dialog, select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if it's not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if it's not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • New macbook pro but some issues

so i got this lovely Macbook Pro on Monday, and it was behaving very nicely until now. i typed something using the trial version of iWork, which allows you to print, and wanted to print it out. the printing was to be done through the network through bonjour. i had not set that up yet so i quickly (time was very much of the essence) set up bonjour in iChat, and then went back into Pages and selected the printer. Pages then "unexpectedly quit". tried again, and again. no go. i guess because it was a trial version i couldn't print save as a Word file, so i pasted it into text edit, again tried printing (quit out again, just tried it as i was typing this and when i go to File > Print i get a beachball, 100% on the fans, and another "unexpectedly quit") and emailed it to myself and printed it out on the PowerMac that was connected to the printer. Only then did it finally work. Keep in mind that printing on the network has never previously been a problem with the other two computers.
Now for the fans, upon restart the fans are going all out for some time even after log in, i suppose that's normal. there are times when the fans will go really high for no apparent reason, the highest CPU consumption being Safari at 8% i remember it being at one point. i thought this batch was supposed to be quiet. Sometimes the high fans seem to have something to do with Youtube, whenever i have a window open with Youtube the fans gradually get louder and louder.
And lastly Safari. I often keep a bunch of windows open, some with flash video, others just regular windows, and some more with ads dotted all over them. the windows i keep open for as long as i feel like it, i get to reading them when i can. i don't remember what specific sites i'm on, i think one time it has been myspace, another time some gaming site, but i'll get a slow loading page and finally a beach ball and an "unexpectedly quit" message. i thought it may have to do with an SIMBL Plug-in for safari called ForgetMeNot, which opens the windows you had open when you closed Safari. i looked at the SIMBL itself and it said universal, shouldn't be a problem right?
    Pleaaase help. Thanks in advance.

I bought my MBP C2D 15" 2.33 stock from my local Apple reseller and have had no problems with it at all.
I would suggest the fan issue you are experiencing is down to a software issue, have you tried running your installation disc and reinstalling a new boot image (clean install)? I always run clean installs incase any damaged has occured to the pre-installed software during transit.
Give it a go and report back

  • MacBook Pro 2008 Late issues

    Sigh! My MacBook Pro
    Hi Guys
I have a Late 2008 MacBook Pro(Uni body). Friday my machine decided its taking a long weekend and just froze up. I reboot my machine and waited for a while for it to boot. It got to the login screen where I normaly type my password in and login. The keyboard and track pad was not responding at all. Then after about 2 or 3mins the track pad started working in the sence that the mouse pointer moved around but no click function. Keyboard and track pad starts working after about 12 - 15 mins if you just leave it. I manage to login and notice that the CPU usage on CPU 1 is at 100% then it dropped then CPU 2 went to 100% then it dropped then both went to 100% and my machine froze. No service running in the backgroud that I could pickup that's using so much CPU at one time. Strange..
Then I decided to try and reinstall my machine and hopefully that would sort the problem out. Not so! Reinstalled the machine and at the end of the installation it gives you a error "Installation Failed - Could not set Machintosh HD as the boot drive". Mmm..
So then I just reboot my machine and held down the "alt" key to see if I can see my boot hard drive. Sees the drive. I select the drive and it starts to boot. The Apple logo comes up with the spinning wheel and after some time the wheel just freezes. It manage to go past the Apple screen and actually get to where you setup your account info but the screen was all dimed for some reason and the machine was very slow.
After that I just gave up and took it in this morning to the service center for them to have a look at. I think its something on the Logicboard the went all bonkers. Hopefully they can get it srted out and I can work again...
    orginal post - http://appleyeti.co.za/showthread.php?14-Sigh-My-MacBook-Pro

I had this same issue until a few minutes ago -- takes longer than usual to start up, but when I finally got my desktop, even though I could move the arrow around, everything was unresponsive. My keyboard was not accepting key commands, but oddly enough the transparent audio output symbol would show up when I press F11/F12, although it was crossed out indicating that there was no device.
I rebooted, but same issue, as well as with a guest user account. Booted in safe mode and turned my dock hiding off (to show dock) - turned hiding just the other day for the heck of it but haven't rebooted until I attempted just now - and I then did what you suggested and held down "D" upon rebooting and everything's back to normal.
Not sure if it was holding down "D" or turning hiding off, but all seems well now. I know the dock is a kind of background process in itself so maybe there was a bug but that shouldn't explain the audio problem.
I don't know if this helps, but that's my story for today.

  • New Macbook Pro set up is stuck on iCloud Drive upgrade screen

I am setting up a new macbook pro and have chosen the option to upgrade to iCloud Drive. After choosing to continue with that option, the spinning ball has been active for quite sometime. Is this normal? I am afraid to force restart as it is a brand new computer.

I had the same issue.  I logged in & registered the device SN (several other devices (SN's) are already associated with the account).  I don't know if this is simply coincidental or not, but as soon as I did that the new mac book pro continued into setup & eventually finished booting up & is now apparently pulling in user/account settings.  I still have to confirm the iCloud Drive setup, but so far at least it moved on past the 'spinning wheel.'

  • MacBook Pro and FlatOut2 issue

I have the MacBook pro 13 inch core i7 early 2011 model. Upgraded the ram to 8 gigs a few weeks ago. Bought the game FlatOut2 from the Mac App store a while ago and loved playing it. Now it has been giving me some annoying glitches. After I finish a  game and exit the app my Macs Dock for some reason totally disappears and I cant bring it back unless I restart my laptop !!! This happened wen my dock was set to auto hide and it never came back up when I put the cursor at the bottom of the screen. Then I restarted the laptop changed the dock settings to stay on all times. Played another round of the game and when I finished and exited my dock was gone for good again !!! I complained to the game developers on their site about this issue and they said I should bring the issue up with apple and not them cause apple provides the Macs Dock and not them !! LOL
Anyways, I have no Idea how to fix this at all. Any help would be appreciated

  • New MacBook Pro Headphone Jack Issues

Hi, I just got my MacBook Pro barely a week ago and I've noticed an issue when using headphones or external speakers when plugged into the headphone jack. It seems that the computer won't recognize that I have something plugged into the jack, sound just keeps playing through the laptop speakers and not the device connected. I can duplicate this at will:
Play music through headphones plugged into computer, hit pause. Disconnect headphones and play music through laptop speakers, pause music again and connect headphones. Hit play, and the sound continues to play through the laptop speakers and not the headphones... The only way I can remedy this is my restarting my machine (PITA) or by shutting the lid and waking the computer up. (Still a PITA) Is there a fix for this? I'm updated to the most recent version, 10.6.8 . I never had this issue with my old MacBook Pro pre unibody. I've read elsewhere that another solution is to go into System Preferences > Sound and click "Output" and change the setting "use adio port for" from "sound input" to "sound output" I don't even have those settings listed in my Output tab... Please help!

Well, the issue has been resolved. The solution was to reset the SMC/PRAM. I thought about doing this but I didn't think I would need to on a brand new computer . At least its back to working order and I didn't have to be without my machine.
To anyone with this issue, just reset the SMC/PRAM

  • MacBook Pro Bluetooth Mouse Issue - Possible Bug??

I recently purchased the new MacBook Pro and I have a weird issue with both the bluetooth Mighty Mouse and another Microsoft bluetooth mouse.
So first, I purchased the mighty mouse thinking it would work great with my new MacBook, however, after pairing it and turning up the scrolling to the highest setting it was still way to slow for movement across the screen requiring me to pick up the mouse and move it to get all the way across.
I had also installed Windows 7 on Parallels and was able to install my Microsoft Presenter Mouse 8000 on that with a dongle and it moved super fast just like I liked it. I had to use the dongle because for some reason Parallels didn't show the internal bluetooth. So I thought I would try using my Microsoft Presenter Mouse 8000 on the Mac side so I downloaded the Intellipoint 6.3 software that is made for mac and installed it on the machine then paired up my MS mouse. I then went in and set the settings to their highest settings for scrolling and once again I had the same issue as with the Mighty Mouse. Way too slow.
So then I took it to one of the Geek Squad guys at Best Buy in my area to see if he could figure it out and he was stumped as well. However, after playing with it a bit we discovered that if you went into the native keyboard/mouse settings in the system preferences folder and dragged the scrolling setting to it's lowest setting and then back to the highest setting the Microsoft Mouse would move super fast like it is supposed to. I got all excited, however, the problem is that as soon as you closed that dialog box it goes back to slow again. Weirdest thing ever.
So I have no idea what would cause that and would love some feedback from you all. I think it is a bug because in my opinion the Might Mouse should work better than anything else. Any thoughts anyone?

This problem can be caused because of the mouse pad. Try using a dark color one with no reflective glare. Sometimes the light bounces.

  • New Macbook Pro Retina Display Issue

    Hi,
I just purchased a new Macbook Pro, 15" Retina Display, 16Gb Ram, 2.3Ghz and finally got my hands on it last week after more than 5 weeks of waiting.
I have a issue for which I wasnt able to find anything on either Google, or this or any other forum.
At one point, after succsessfully installing windows 7 through Bootcamp, I got a set of 4 differently colored vertical stripes going along my MBP screen, starting with a very dark blue stripe on the far right, purple slightly thicker, then a copy of the first blue stripe and at last the thickest stripe which is sort of a very transparent black overlay (around 10% black overlay).
I can think of nothing, deleted windows, it's partition & all that (not that I would've made a difference but I'm kinda desperate). I am including a screenshot (in which everything looks normal even though the stripes are there) and a photo I just took with my iPhone.
The 4 stripes now turned into 2 (at least visibly). the transparent one and the 3 colored ones joined together as black.
Anyone ever got a similar problem?

  • MacBook Pro C2D Wireless issues after 10.4.10 -  issue pin pointed !

I have a MacBook Pro C2D which has started to do random disconnects from my WLAN.
I am running the latest Tiger 10.4.10
No matter if I use the network connection actively by surfing, chatting, listening to netradio, downloading or if it is just idle, it randomly disconnects. Sometimes after 30 mins, sometimes after several hours.
It never reconnects it selves until I do it manually. But then it has no problem reconnecting.
It is quite annoying, especially since I sometimes run services like a web server (for development reasons) and sometimes want to download large files using either http, ftp or bittorrent. But I cannot trust it to finish the downloads, as it randomly disconnects.
It haven't always done these things. It has started occurring after the last couple of updates from Apple I think (don't remember excatly when).
I have 3 different accesspoints with different wireless chip sets, but it occurs on all of them. Also I have a couple of PC Laptops that dosn't have this problem on my network.
I pinned my issue to one specific setting in my wireless router.
In WPA mode, this setting affects the stability of my link:
    ReAuthentication Timer
It is normally set to 1800 secs (30 mins) - and this makes my MBP disconnect every - yes - 30 mins...almost. Sometimes it tend to survive the interval.
The valid range is 10-9999 seconds in my router.
If set to 10 secs, it almost disconnects all the time - every 10 secs.
If set to 9999 I can work some hours without disconnects (my guess is 9999 secs, or 166 mins).
It seems like some update from Apple in the 10.4.10 release, efficiently broke the WPA encryption implementation of ReAuthentication.
It makes no difference to switch between WPA and WPA2.
Has anyone found a way to fix this from the OS X end, instead of compromising security on the Access Point end?

    Zebra 1
Whilst I don't personally have the same problem reported here, that's a pretty offensive reply.
You might want to spend a bit of time here
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1135&start=0
and let these people know that they have the best router in the business and that all their computers are working great before advising people to forget about trying to get to the root cause of an issue and spend a load of money instead.
I got a bit frustrated with a post on this forum a little while ago and posted a snotty reply. The original poster called me on it and told me that I didn't have to reply, once I thought about it, I realised the OP was correct and apologised.
Are you big enough to do the same?
    Best of luck.

  • Retina MacBook Pro Battery Percentage issue.

    Hi,
I got a 2.3Ghz Retina MacBook Pro and have noticed that the battery indicator tells me (currently) I have 75% charge remaining. However, when I look into iStat widget, it tells me it's 72%.
I ran into System Inormation under 'Power' tab and divided the total capacity by the one left and it does come out to 72% indicating that the iStat is indeed correct.
Does anyone else have a similar problem? I just find it quite weird. I had to exchange the laptop once for batch of bad pixels on the screen. I really don't want to go to the store again and deal with setting up a new device if it's just a software glitch and not a battery issue.
    Thanks,
    Paul
    ALSO,
I've checked the display for ghosting etc and no issues here. I've noticed that some of you have that problem. Just wanted to give an update on another rMBP.

    I'd start with http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html

  • MacBook Pro Wi-Fi Issues

Hey everyone, seems like a lot of people are having issues with the first-gen MacBook Pro and wireless. I just wish mine started acting up when I still had the Apple Care. Anyways, it seems that right when my Mac hit the 4 year old mark I started having issues with the Wi-Fi. I used to be able to get Wi-Fi all over my house, but lately it seems if I move more than 5 feet away from the router it drops all signal. Lately it's been doing this thing where I click up a web page and it'll disconnect and then I have to turn the Wi-Fi off and turn it back on and it keeps doing that until it decides to not do it anymore. It's really frustrating, this is my main computer, and I love it. Sure I could use my others, but they're PCs. What I'm wondering is are there N cards available for this model? I'd love to just put an N card in here, upgrade my router to N and get the increased speed and distance. With my old Lenovo I used to be able to get internet down by my fire pit which is probably a good 200 feet away, outside, and down a monstrous hill! I can't even get Wi-Fi with my MacBook in my living room. I already upgraded the HD, and the RAM (2GB max I think right?), so I'd like to think I'm pretty familiar with the hardware. Thanks for the help!

The easy first thing to try is to clean out what's probably a long list of networks you've joined over the years:
    1) With the computer running on the Airport card, open System Preferences > Network and make certain the Airport is selected.
    2) In the bottom of the main pane is an "Advanced..." button. Click it. A new pane will open with the "Airport" tab selected; if it's not selected, make it so.
    3) That pane shows old networks. Most were probably picked in travel and are hopelessly out of range. Delete any network you don't use on at least a weekly basis. That can help with a lot of wireless problems and other, like it solved my wake-from-sleep issues. While in that pane, deselect the option, "remember networks this computer has joined" to prevent future build-up.
There is a patch in the Apple Store that enables wireless-n on some Intel Macs but I think yours may be too old. Still, you can read about it. It says "Core 2 Duo " and I think yours is a "Core Duo." Anyway:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D4141ZM/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
Now, for "g" versus "n" issues: Use speedtest.net to find your exact speeds first. Test both in wireless and in wired mode; wired becomes the baseline result. Test all the computers you use, Mac and PeeCees alike.
Unless your wired connection is faster than about 15MBps, you will not notice much difference between wireless-g and -n. Being in a small, almost rural, town we are happy to get 5.5MBps from our provider. On our network (Airport Extreme "n"), there is no difference between the tested speed of my MBP 2.2G with wireless-n and my old PowerBook G4 with -g, and they post the same speed as a wired connection.
However, I recently set up a wireless network for my daughter in Portland OR where they get a blistering 24MBps service. To make sure it was working, I tested not only from her Mac Mini but both my notebooks. Here are the speedtest.net results:
    Wired (all three computers): ~24MBps
    MacMini 1.83G (wireless-n) 18.3MBps
    MacBook Pro 2.2G (wireless-n): 18.5MBps
    PowerBook G4 1.0G (wireless-g): 17.8MBps
The point is that you will need a fairly fast connection of see any difference in "g" vs "n" speed, and then it's small--about 4 percent in my n=1 sample.
I'm sorry I can't attest to the range issues for N and G. My daughter's domicile is a very compact duplex unit and no point in the house was farther than about 25 feet from the router, so that precluded any distance testing that didn't require dealing with exterior walls.
Anyway try cleaning up your network list for a start, then getting some hard numbers for speed before spending any money.
    Regards,
    Allan
