  • On starting up, my macbook pro shuts down after 25 seconds of booting up.

Hi there. On starting up, my macbook pro shuts down after 25 seconds of booting up. The time bar comes on for a while before it simply goes blank and switches off without any notification. Battery iappears charged. Could it be a virus? Help please!! O

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet

  • MacBook Pro shuts down after periods of inactivity

I had a 6-year old MacBook Pro.  Besides just being a bit old and tired it would attempt to shut down after periods of inactivity.  I tried setting it to never sleep.  I tried the whole reset thing where you take the battery out and hold the power button for 5 seconds.  I bought new memory for it.  Eventually I used it as an excuse to buy a new machine.
Of course I copied my image over to the new MacBook.  Now I know its not a hardware issue because it still happens!
I also have other quirky issues (probably not related, but who knows).
I just cannot get my remote (or any apple remote to work).
I have an empty folder that I can't delete–it crashes the system.
Aperature hangs up all the time
VMware hangs up all the time
Firefox and Chrome both hang up
Sometimes I have to force quit Mail
Is this a good time to do a clean install?

Resetting the SMC doesn't seem to have done anything. The progress bar hasn't reached the end to shut down yet, but so far, it's displaying the same behavior.

  • Macbook Pro Shuts Down after 30 mins. When Watching a Movie through TV

Why does my new Macbook Pro shutdown whenever we try to stream a DVD from the computer to our TV? Both products are new. I changed the energy settings and it still shuts down about a half hour into the DVD. It's so annoying! Please help.

Mine goes off after a while of playing my iMac's music thru wi-fi onto the apple TV to have my music played on my Bose solo. A few weeks ago it happened also if I was playing my music from my iPad thru the apple TV. I've been doing this for years and it never happened before. Someone suggested a few weeks ago that possibly my Apple TV was connecting to my wi-fi in a faulty way. I have noticed that if I check my iMacs wi-fi settings and I remove wi-fi my apple devices have had connected to in the past are listed there. I have removed them manually and unchecked the "remember wi-fis  this computer has joined" box but they will reappear there a moment later. Is my apple TV effective? or my wi-fi's settings? Help please!

  • My Macbook Pro shuts down after a few minutes of using.

It shuts off after 10 minutes or less of using.  I can feel that my laptop is hot around the ports area and I am using almost every port.  Could that be the cause of the shut off  because of overheating?  My settings for battery and screen saver are turned off and I am plugged in with the power adapter.  Please help it's frustrating to do any work when this keeps happening.  Thanks in advance.

It would help if you would indicate the exact model of your MBP and the OS you are using.
Open Activity Monitor and look for any applications that may be using a lot of CPU resources.
Install iStat pro and see what kind of temperatures your MBP is generating, especially the CPU.
    Please post back.

  • My Macbook Pro shuts down after I close my lid for a prolonged time

Everytime, on my Macbook Pro 2010 edition, I close my lid, when I try to wake up my laptop (open the lid) it appears with a black screen. • MacBook Pro shuts down after loading bar

I turn on my macbook and it takes me to the screen where you login in. I login and there is a loading bar  that appears below my user profile picture and about 15% in it shuts my computer stown. I have tried the command + R but it just takes me to a light gray screen with a dark gray lock on it and I try to use my user password for it but it doesn't work. Please help?

If your computer came with Lion or later pre-installed - 2011 or later - then do:
Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.
If your computer came with Snow Leopard or earlier:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process
by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your
             installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Macbook Pro shuts down after booting up

I'm a new Macbook Pro owner running OS X.5. After booting up my computer "unexpectedly" quits and I need to hold power button and reboot. Sometimes it does this twice before finally operating normally. Any suggestions?
    Macbook Novice

    Either:
    a) Boot up in Safe Mode (hold down shift key at startup) to force checks and repairs
    or
    b) Boot holding down Apple/S (single user Mode) and don't let go until you see scrolling text.
When that stops and you see a root#: prompt enter
    fsck -fy
Let it run through all the checks and repairs.
If it fails first time, at any time, or finds and fixes a fault - run the command again and keep doing so (some fixes can take several passes) until it says "Appears to be OK" then enter
    reboot

  • Macbook pro shutting down after I installed new RAM

I recently installed 8 GB of new RAM (purchased from Best buy). and a few times since I did that (yesterday morning),  my laptop has shut down and a grey screen has popped up with something saying  "Your computer has shut down because of a problem, please wait a few minutes for it to restart"  Or something like that.
I've installed RAM before and this was super easy and quick.  The machine says both RAM sticks are "OK" when I go to the system report.   Yet I cant help but think thats the problem.
Does anyone know what that could be?   The ONLY thing I am a tad unsure of, is the little "pop" or "click" the sticks should make when you put them in.  I don't remember hearing that.
Any ideas?  I really don't want to have to go back to my standard 4 gigs or RAM.
    system specs.
    2.8 C2D Mid 2009 Macbook Pro,

Either your RAM is no good, of poor quality, the wrong specs or it's not installed correctly or it got subjected to static electricity when you put it in.
Best Buy isn't as Mac centric, thus the quality of RAM that Mac's require may not be there.
You should have purchased from Crucial.com or Other World Computing or similar that tests the RAM to make sure it works the first time you put it in, as it costs everyone money to ship bad RAM back and forth.
I put in 16GB a couple of days ago, took five minutes and it works perfectly.
Nothing like top tier RAM for a top of the line machine, especially with all those tiny, easy to lose screws Apple uses.

  • MacBook Pro shuts down after booting

My MacBook Pro doesn't boot. It simply restart after the Apple logo and a few seconds of pinwheel.
I can start it target mode, but I can't boot with a CD nor any other volume. It keeps on restarting.
    Any idea ?

    Hi B,
You can't even startup in Single User?
If you are getting the splash screen some starting is being done, press COMMAND+V after Power button and see if you can read something that would give a clue about the issue.
If Single User is possible get the syslog report posted here.
    Good luck.

  • Macbook Pro shuts down after 10 minutes of progress bar

This morning there was an update notification on my screen asking to restart to finsih with an update, so I hit restart and went on with my morning. I came back to a shut down computer, so I turned it on. I get the boot up chime, the grey apple, and a progress bar that slowly fills up for about 10 minutes. When it reaches the end, the computer shuts down. I can't get it to boot past the bar. The laptop was running perfectly fine before the update, and, unfortunately I don't know what the update was (my fault, I know - I didn't check before just hitting the restart button). What can I do to get my computer working again?

Resetting the SMC doesn't seem to have done anything. The progress bar hasn't reached the end to shut down yet, but so far, it's displaying the same behavior.

  • Macbook Pro Shut down with a Woosh sound and Beeeep Beeeeep

    Hi,
I have Macbook Pro bought in 2010 Nov and since Dec 2011 i have been having this problem, the computers shuts down with a Beeeeppp Beeepp loud sound and there is WOOOOOOSHHHH should quite loud and then shut up... i have done 2 service but the problems still exist and i am stuck as it works only 10-15 mts before it shuts down...

If you have the 15" 2010 model, you may be having some problems with a bad NVIDIA GPU found on some boards that will cause kernel panics. See -> http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US. Note that the kernel panics only affect the 15" model.
If you do have the problem as described in the Knowledge Base article, it's a good thing that you purchased the machine in November 2010 as the replacement program is only 'good' for three years from date of purchase.
If you DON'T have the 15" model, call back. We can look at some logs, maybe, and see just what's going on.

  • My Macbook Pro ran out of battery last night and wouldn't turn back on even when connected to power for a period of time. However, when I woke up, it did turn on. Is there a reason this happened and should I get it looked at?

Last night, I was watching something on my Macbook Pro and it died (out of battery). I went to plug it in and waited a couple of minutes to try and start it back up. However, when I connected the power source the light was green, which could not have been the case since I know 100% it was out of battery. I proceeded to hold the start button for a long period of time, but my computer made no noise and refused to turn on - it looked like for all intensive purposes it was dead. I left it alone overnight praying that it would be alright in the morning and luckily, when I opened the computer this morning it was restarted and fine. I'm concerned because I've had this happen to me a couple of times and while it always turns back on, I feel like there is a bigger issue that I need to get addressed. Can anyone help me with this? Any ideas? Thank you!

Apple Does Not recommend that. Please Read.

    "Portables with built-in batteries"
Current Apple portable computer batteries are pre-calibrated and do not require the calibration procedure outlined in this article. These computers use batteries that should be replaced only by an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Apple recommend calibrating the battery when you buy a new Macbook and then every few months, or monthly if it used on mains all the time. This, as Apple says is to keep the battery operating at maximum efficiency. When the battery discharges and shuts the macbook down, it still has reserve power for a good number of hours. There is also a logic board battery to hold various settings.
I rather think I will take Apples advice on using their equipment not yours, but I would be intrigued to discover what is it you know that Apple doesnt about its batteries?
