MacBook pro shuts down instead of sleeping while connected to power adapter

Hi there,
I am currently facing a rather strange issue. My old MacBook pro (about 2 years old) shuts down instead of sleeping but only when it is connected to the power adapter. I mean it goes to sleep mode perfectly well when it works only with the battery. Is it a know issue ? I'm running 10.5.6 and this problem is quite new to me (happened the first time some weeks ago).
Thank you in advance for your answer.

You might try resetting the SMC and see if this helps:

Good luck!

  • MacBook Pro shuts down instead of sleep

My daughter's macbook pro is supposed to sleep when the lid is closed but it usually shuts off the hard drive instead.  She has a 15", 2010 model with the latest software and updates.  Any suggestions?

Yes, sorry....I wasn't very clear on that.   It doesn't sleep with the lid closed but the display goes off.  Open the lid and the display comes on and then goes off after about 5 seconds.  Then, the display won't come back on and I hear the hard drive running. Holding down the power button is needed to shut down the hard drive so it can be restarted.  The hard drive just won't go to sleep - but I'm checking some other threads that say empty the printing que and uncheck "wake to LAN" in system preferences.  I'll update if that works.

  • MacBook Pro shuts down instead of sleeping

My MacBook Pro was asleep on battery power with a near-full charge.
I was able to wake it 45 minutes ago, use it, and put it back to sleep with no problem.
Then, just a few minutes ago, I opened the screen and the computer had shut down.
Here's the console log from the time of the event.
    Any ideas?

  • My MacBook Pro shut down unexpectedly and won't connect to wifi now.

My MacBook Pro shut down unexpectedly and won't connect to wifi now. All other devices in my house are connecting to the wifi just fine. The laptop just refuses to connect. Any ideas on how to fix this/what it might mean?

    Try a SMC reset:

Follow directions for "A battery you should not remove yourself"
Check the mage safe connector and port for any debris.

  • Macbook Pro shuts down when i sleep it

I've had some recent issues with my 2012 Macbook Pro. Each time I put my laptop on to sleep it shuts it's self down and when i log back in it sometimes makes me log in twice. When I log in the round symbol up top is not positioned directly over where I type my passcode. It's been really really frustrating ever since I updated the software to Yosemite. Very disappointing for me because I feel my Macbook isn't living up to the amazing Apple standards. If anyone knows how to fix these what I called glitches I would be very, very happy. Thanks

I'm running 10.7 as well. I had the same situation occur to me: I had put my MBP to sleep. The next day, I opened it up to find that it had shutdown overnight. Had to plug in the power adapter and push the "on" button to start-up machine. Strangely enough, the battery had 75%+ charge when it shutdown during sleep.

  • Mac Pro shuts down instead of sleeps.

I run a  2008 Mac with OSX10.5.8, with 2GB memory and 2x2.8Ghz Quad core processors
It works great! however recently it has started acting strangely. What i mean is it normally goes into sleep mode after 15 mins of inactivity or so.
However recently it sometimes seems to shut down after a period of inactivity .... Is there a setting which has somehow been  changed or is it the signs of a more serious issue?
    Any help appreciated!

Hopefully post stll being checked. I have just started to have the same issue with my Mac Pro 2008. It seems to be shutting down and starting fine but the last few times I put it to Sleep, it will eventully shut down on its own. Restarts fine with no message of on screen of improper shut down. I have: reset SMC, zapped Pram, checked Console. Will run Disk Utility this afternoon.
I can put it to Sleep and Wake it again with no problem. However, it seems after a longer time in Sleep mode is when I may have a problem
I shut down last night at 6 PM. When I Rebooted this morning (it had shut down) I can see Console notes a  Sleep failure code and Improper shutdown detected but this is noted this morning when I am rebooting it.

  • 2008 Unibody MacBook Pro shuts down when lid closed while on Battery

    Hello,
I did some google searches, but could not find anything that was exactly my issue. I have a 2008 MBP unibody. If the MBP is on battery only and I close the lid, the notebook shuts down completely. This is even when the battery is fully charged. However if while plugged in and I do the same, the computer "sleeps" as advertised. I have reset both the SMC and PRAM to no avail. The main thing that bothers me is it seems like when this happens on battery, its almost as if the computer is getting a hard shut down. The machine acts as if the battery was pulled while the lid was closed and this is obviously not good for the hardware or sofware. Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks
    Keith

I forgot to add that when the lid is closed it doesnt shut down straight away. The LED on the front pulses and for a good 10-15 mins it does sleep and wake. However any time longer and it does its hard shut down deal.

  • Macbook Pro shutting off instead of sleeping

Hi my macbook pro is simply switching off when the battery is low rather than putting it self to sleep (and retaining contents of memory) its just clicking and dying instantly - is this a fault? My battery history as reported by coconut is 22 months old, 457 cycles, 79% capacity

I am having the same problem. This battery is the one that replaced the original when there was a recall (not all that long ago). According to coconut the capacity is only 13%.
Do you know if there's any way to salvage this or will I have to purchase a new one?

  • MacBook Pro shuts down as soon as I unplug the power

    Help,
As soon as I unplug the power of my MacBook Pro, it shuts down, and all of my unsaved stuff is lost. Anyone got a soloution?
PS Is the battery user replaceable? I am using the Mid-2010 model.

No, that battery is not really user-replaceable. What numbers do you see for that battery in Apple symbol/About this Mac/More Info/System Report/Power? (Especially the Charge and Health Information.)

  • MacBook shuts down instead of sleeping when battery low

Like many people, I had the infamous MacBook sudden shutdown problem where my MacBook (original model) would suddenly shut down wihtout warning regardless of if it was running off battery or AC adapter. I took the MacBook into the Apple store, they did their magic, and two weeks later an updated MacBook was shipped to me, free of the problem. I also applied the firmware update when it came out.
Now I have a new problem...it's that the MacBook doesn't seem to want to sleep when the battery gets low. Instead, it will suddenly shut down without warning. In the past, I seem to recall that it would give alerts saying that my power was low, and eventually force itself to sleep. However, now the battery can be as high as 15-20% and the MacBook will shut down. This never happens when the battery is not on the low side, so I'm wondering if this is a problem with the MacBook guaging how much power it has left. Sometimes, I notice that when I plug it in and reboot, the battery says it is at 0%, even though it clearly was not prior to the shutdown (though that didn't happen just now when it shut down - when I rebooted after connecting the AC adapter, it was at 15%).
I tried resettting the SMC firmware, which seems to help transietly, but the problem recurs. 90% of the time I use my computer plugged in, so that's why I've not noticed it much

The same thing happened to me last night -- the Macbook shut down because of low battery instead of sleeping, and it gave no warning messages at all as the battery power got low.
I never had the sudden shutdown problems, though.
I also checked the battery capacity with CoconutBattery, and it reported that the Max Battery Capacity was 4105 mAh, which is only 78% of the battery's original max capacity. Today, CoconutBattery reports that the battery's max capacity is 5035 mAh (96% of original capacity), which is more reasonable for a laptop less than a year old.
Perhaps resetting PRAM or the Power Management Unit could solve this problem.
Any experts out there with a solution?

  • Macbook shuts down instead of sleeps

I have a 2ghz core duo macbook (modle No. A1181 (EMC 2092)) that I recently restored from a time machine backup. It was at 10.5.5 and now its at 10.6.8. So, right now I close the lid of the macbook and immediatly shuts down instead of sleeping. The previous macbook (the one I made the back up from) didn't have this problem and nor did this one before the upgrade. I have already tried resetting the smc and the pram. Anyone have any ideas?

Having never shutdown my laptop, I was guessing on its reaction to closing the lid. So, I shutdown my MBP and closed the lid. It did continue the shutdown, so there seems to be a problem with yours.
Sometimes, sleep and shutdown issues can be solved by resetting the SMC

My MacBook Pro shuts down whenever I put it to sleep then put it in my briefcase and transport it. Then I have to reboot it again. Why does this happen?

If it sounds like a RAM issue it could be one of the RAM chips has failed. You could try removing the RAM one at a time and see if it starts with one still installed.

  • My macbook pro shuts down OSX and all my programs when the lid is closed

    Hi,
I am having a problem. My macbook pro shuts down OSX and all my programs when the lid is closed. I close the lid, and then I hear the shutdown music and then when I open it again it automatically restarts OSX and all my windows and programs are closed, any info gone.
This doesn't happen all the time. Just once a day or maybe twice a day. It seems like it happens basically when I have my computer just the way I want it, to keep an eye on things for the day.
I just recently switched to a mac and while somewhat savvy, I am not a programmer or techie, but it seems to me that when I shut the lid, it should do the same thing every time.
I have a intel core 2 duo 17 inch macbook pro with 2.33 processr and 2 gig ram, if that helps.
I am in alaska and there is no genius bar here and I am hoping to figure this out before I begin bugging our local independant mac store about this.
    Thanks in advance,

    Ahhh, enlightenment!
That would make sense. What I usually do, after closing the lid, is to wait for the apple to turn off and then set it down on it's side leaning it against the side table. I will try to wait for it to indicate that it is fully asleep before I move it next time. Personally, I prefer my computer to NOT fall asleep at all, but I am told it is not an option. Apparently this function is hardware related accoring to my local mac shop. They tracked it down for me because I hated this feature when I first bought my computer and was trying some way around it.
The shutdown music I was refering to was that music the mac makes when shutting down, which doesnt usually occur when it goes to sleep, unless it is malfunctioning like this.
What does resetting the pmu do? (what is a pmu as well?)
    Thank you very much.

After install of OS 10.5.8 my iMac G5 - 2005 model, no Intel processor - whenever I choose sleep from the Apple menu or the time-out goes to sleep mode the computer shuts down instead of sleeping. Any insight would be appreciated.

Try using Disk Utility t repair your disk
       1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
       3. Click the First Aid tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Then reboot and repair permissions from your internal drive.

  • MacBook Pro shuts down when i close the lid

    Hey,
My MacBook Pro shuts down when i close the lid.
It started to do this one or two times, but now it is every time.
I have the latest battery update, so this should not be the issue here..
    Any sugestions??
I have started to suspect the it might be some faulty conecctions or somthing..

If it's unable to go into the proper sleep state for some reason then it will do that.
Run /Utilities/Console and click 'All Messages' top left then close the lid, wait a minute then open it again - if it's shut down then reboot and open Console again and check the latest log lines looking for 'sleepimage' - it should give you an indication of what happened/didn't. If you're not sure what it all means post _just those lines_ here.
