Macbook pro shuts down two minutes after start up

Hi
Can anyone help with a problem on my Macbook Pro. I have had it for two days and loaded all of my info and set up everything as I would like it and it froze.
I waited and waited and in the end had to power down. When I restarted it I get the spinning wheel for about two minutes then it just shuts off the power. I have tried to start in safe mode etc to no avail.
I feel so unlucky with Apple as month ago I bought myself a new Imac and within three weeks the hard drive failed. They have replaced it with a new one but now this problem is making me feel unsure about Apple am I just unlucky? Thank you

My MacBook Pro starts with a Gray Screen and Apple Logo, a bar comes at the bottom, but after few seconds the machine shuts down. This was bought approx 1 year back. Please help!!

which model MacBook Pro do you have (did you buy it new?), and which version of OS X is installed on it?

  • My MacBook Pro Shuts Down 5 Minutes After I Unplug It, Whats WRONG!?!?

Recently, whenever my Macbook Pro is ever unplugged it shuts down in less than five minutes. It works absolutely fine when the power source is plugged into the wall. Do you think i have a faulty battery? Are there other Possibilities? I have searched around and it seems like people who have the same, but less extreme experiences-have faulty batteries...
    Thanks for the the help!
    -Jeff

Defective battery. I know some folks with early MBPs that had this problem, and it was a bad battery in those cases. Call AppleCare. Assuming it's in warranty, they should ship you a replacement battery with a mailing label to return the bad one.

  • Macbook Pro shuts down constantly, and rarely starts. Should I reinstall OSX?

    Hi there,
I have a early 2011 Macbook Pro 17" with OSX Lion 10.7.5 and a bootcamp partition running Windows 7.
About three months ago some coffee was spilled on the keyboard, and afterwards was having some issues where it would shut down randomly. After a visit to my university's computer repair center, who told me there was a problem with the power button, and a visit to the local MacStore, who told me that the internals needed to be replaced for a whopping 1,300 dollars. I let the comupter sit for some time while I tried to figure out what to do. A few weeks ago I opened the machine up and cleaned areas where I could see coffee residue with 95% isopropyl alcohol. After letting dry for the evening, I started the computer up and it worked just fine for about two weeks.
Suddenly, when using the Windows operating system, it began shutting down when going to sleep. Following some advice on this site, I switched over to the Mac operating system and installed updates. On restart after the updates, the computer did not actually restart, and since, has started up to the grey screen with apple logo, makes a 'clink' sound and then shuts off. Rarely it actually starts to the desktop, and then 'clinks', goes black, and shuts off. When safe booting, and using the disk utility, it does the same thing. I have reset the SMC and the RAM.
When I am able to succesfully load the disk utility, it shuts down shortly after I begin the repair disk. I have tried this through the original install disk, and get the same results.
I haven't tried reinstalling, or erasing the hard drive and reinstalling OSX. I am worried about trying this as it seems like I might really screw stuff up if it shuts down in the middle of the reinstall or erasing. Am I correct about this?
Some posts here suggest that I need a firmware update of some sorts, but I do not see how I could do this if I cannot get the machine to start normall. Other solutions that might apply to this problem that I have found also strangely require the computer to actually be on and running.
Although I am willing to accept it, I have a hard time believing this is a hardware issue (e.g. logic board) related to the spill because of how long it ran without any problems.
I have been unable to get any sort of error report as well because of the shut down problem.
If anyone could help with my quesiton about reinstalling, and perhaps offer any other advice that doesn't involve me taking it to a MacStore I would greatly appreciate it. Its finals week and I could really use my laptop. It is a real pain being tied to a desktop.
Battery is fully charged, and does indeed charge.

Update on this: somehow the disk repair utility went through and I did a repair disk. There were no problems found. Computer worked fine for an hour, and then started asking me if I really wanted to shut down, which I did not. After doing this three times it made the characteristic 'clink', and shut off as described in my previous post.

  • Macbook pro shuts down during reboot after flat battery

Hi, I have a macbook pro (early 2011) And it went flat two nights ago whilst watching a movie. It was plugged in but I've been having charger issues. Anyway, now that it's fully charged, whenever i turn it on it gets to the apple logo with a progress bar (restoring the previous session maybe?), but then shuts down. I've tried a few times and its the same everytime.I suspect that it's trying to restore the last session (the progress bar - I cant recall whether that happens normally) and running into problems because of the flat battery episode. Can a session restore be cancelled?
I can still boot up the windows partition by pressing the option button during start up, its just the mac partition that wont boot. Also, I am still running Snow Leopard (what it came with, though with all updates).any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Anyone?

  • Macbook Pro shuts down on startup after botched Leopard install

After I tried to install Leopard on my Macbook Pro, the install failed and the second time I tried to install it after restarting it said that it could not be installed because it didn't see OSX 10.4.11. It won't boot up off of the OSX 10.4 install disk either saying that software can't be installed on the computer. Whenever I try to boot off the hard drive it can't find OSX 10.4, it either gives the old question mark folder error or it just literally shuts itself down. Any ideas? I would greatly appreciate anything.

    HI Guardian,
If you haven't tried this ... boot the MBPro from the Tiger disk by holding down the C key, inserting the disk and pressing the power button all at one time. Release the C key when you see the Apple logo on the screen. By default an Installler window will open. Ignore that... now look up at the Menu and click Utilities/Startup Manager. Click Startup Manager. A window that opens will indicate the drives available to boot from, I'm praying it will say 10.4.x in there. If it does, select MacintoshHD 10.4.x and click Restart. If this works then you have a working Tiger system folder. The thing that tipped me off is the, "question mark" icon... that shows up when the computer can't locate a system folder.
Also, whenever you install an UPGRADE from say Tiger to Leopard make sure you have enough free drive space. You can use Disk Utility in Applications/Utilities to do that. Rule of thumb... never allow a drive to fall below 15% free space.

  • Why does my IMac shut down five minutes after start up?

I have a 21" Imac, purchased 2010. If I don't login to a user account within five minutes of start up the IMac shuts down.  It used to go to a sleep mode.
My OS is Mavericks, 10.9.3.  I also have the latest security update.  A message comes on the start screen within one minute.  It reads, if you are having trouble entering your password press the start button to shut down, then press again to enter a recovery OS.  If I login within 5 minutes of start all is well.
    Thanks, Gary

  • On starting up, my macbook pro shuts down after 25 seconds of booting up.

Hi there. On starting up, my macbook pro shuts down after 25 seconds of booting up. The time bar comes on for a while before it simply goes blank and switches off without any notification. Battery iappears charged. Could it be a virus? Help please!! O

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

My Macbook Pro shut down because the battery power ran out. Now I cannot start it and the battery will not charge. Only one green battery charge light lights up and blinks on the left side. I am running Lion. How do I get this to charge and turn on? Thanks

If your model Macbook Pro is the calibrating model, let the battery calibrate.
If not, and are still under warrant or have Apple Care, give them a call and get a case number.  Otherwise, take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.
