My MacBook Pro shut down unexpectedly and won't connect to wifi now. All other devices in my house are connecting to the wifi just fine. The laptop just refuses to connect. Any ideas on how to fix this/what it might mean?

    Try a SMC reset:

Follow directions for "A battery you should not remove yourself"
Check the mage safe connector and port for any debris.

  • MacBook Pro shut down unexpectedly.

I have a MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz Intel Core duo running Snow leopard 10.6.8 that shut down unexpectedly on battery power. What can I do to fix this problem?. I hardly use the battery and I had it replaced not too long a go. Any thoughts please. What can I do to fix this serious problem?.

    Carlos,
Your machine can shut down for any number of reasons, some normal. We have determine between "unexpected but normal" and "unexpected but problematical.
If your MBP's battery hits 0%, the HD will shut down automatically; simply plug in your MagSafe adapter to restore the charge. In other cases, Energy Saver may shut down your machine if it's not being used for a certain amount of time; check your Energy Saver preferences to set the times.
Some problems are more problematical. The Power Supply regulates power to your MBP, and you may notice unexpected drops in power if it's damaged.
In short, you may want to visit your local, friendly Apple Store if you notice this incidents. But before doing so, be disciplined in your research, and note when the shut downs occur, and under what conditions. If you can, also log the amount of power remaining in your battery when the problem happened. That way, the Apple staff will be able to read the statistics and figure out the problem more easily.

The power supply is clearly not reading the battery correctly, or the battery is not of the correct type for it to be able to read it. Bring it in for service to investigate these possible issues.
The CMOS (PRAM battery or Capacitor) may also be expired after 4 years time, if that's what you have.

  • 15" Macbook Pro shuts down unexpectedly

Recently, my MBP has been shutting down unexpectedly and then the front light will flash 3 times.
I have been searching for any insight but have not found the right answer.
The MBP is running Mac OS X, version 10.6.8, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

May be the RAM is not seated properly.
If that is not the case, take it to the Apple Store for evaluation and repair.
    Best.

    WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN??

That many cycles is amazing service. A battery that consistently shuts down at about the same charge level percentage every time probably has a bad cell (that info came form an Apple technician) and needs to be replaced.
It's given you far longer service than many of us get, and may be a new record around here for cycle count!

  • MacBook Pro shutting down unexpectedly, getting hot.

I may need to have my MBP serviced, since it is still under AppleCare but I thought I would post here and see what kind of feedback I get.
I have an original MacBook Pro purchased in late December 2006. I am still using the original battery; it could stand to be replaced but it is not completely useless yet. The problem I am seeing is that if I am running on battery, and the MBP heats up it is suddenly and unexpectedly turning itself off. I've also seen this happen once while on AC power. When this happens I notice that the bottom of the unit is very hot. I don't think the problem is with my battery, but here's my stats from System Profiler:

After doing some reading on this board investigated the version of my BatteryUpdater.bundle. It is version 1.3. I've also reset the SMU and tried to recalibrate the battery, but my MBP won't stay running long enough to drain the battery all the way and I'm reluctant to let it keep shutting off like that since it could damage the OS.
So am I just out of luck and need to take my MBP in for some hardware checks or is there something else I can try to trouble shoot?
    Regards,
    Michael

Based on those specs, your battery is fine. But, you do seem to have a problem, although not caused by the battery.
Insert Install DVD 1, and reboot with the d key pressed, which will run the Apple Hardware Test. Report any errors here if you like (4SNS = temp sensors, 4MOT = fans), or just head into an Apple Store.

  • Macbook Pro shutting down unexpectedly after new OSX 10.9 download.

I bought my MacBook Pro in mid 2010 area. I had 10.6.8 version on it. I recently when the new operating system came out, I decided to upgrade and download it. Everything was fine, nothing slowed down or changed. However, recently my computer has shut down every couple of weeks or so unexpectadly then rebooted all on its own and have everything I was working on be back to where it was. I copied the code down to try and figure it out. Nothing has come up in Google, so I'm wondering if anyone here would be able to help. As a last resort, i'm going to probably have to factory reset my computer, but if anyone knows what is going on, i'd love the help. Here is the error report code I recieved:

Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
             com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff
                dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Macbook Pro shuts down unexpectedly while on battery

My Macbook Pro will shutdown without warning when the battery level gets somewhere around 50%. This system is only 1 year old and the battery information shows a cycle count of 163. Is this the standard lifespan of a Macbook battery these days? Is anyone else experiencing this after one year?

    Hi !
I have the same problem with my new Macbook Pro 17. Right now I am trying the described calibration procedure but I am not sure if can do this right. Step 4 in ths procedure tells me to
"Continue to keep your computer on until it goes to sleep. Save all your work and close all applications when the battery gets very low, before the computer goes to sleep."
But my computer never goes to sleep when the battery is low. It always shuts down when the battery reaches about 25 %. Will the calibration procedure still work ?
What frightens me is the output of the System Information (sorry all in german) :
    Batterie-Informationen:
    Informationen zum Batteriemodell:

It tells me that my full capacity is 9396 mAh. Shouldn't this be something like 12000 mAh ? At least this is what I read in other posts. Will this value also be influenced by the calibration procedure ?
    Greetings from Germany

  • My macbook pro shuts down unexpectedly ouch?

i see the shut down window and if i don't hit cancel it shuts down shortly after. it is very disturbing i already tried energy saving settings but it dont help. Anyone has a clue how to fix this?

i have this exact same problem i think i have figured it out.
whats ya email? i will bookmark all my tabs for ya n send em in an attachment https://www.dropbox.com/s/cquma58xweztbt9/Macbook%20Pro%20Troubleshooting.zip
Basically in mid 2010 a bunch of these macbook pros were manufactured and at the time there was a bad batch of graphics cards going around of them have faulty graphics cards which causes the kernel panic and subsequent crash/reboot. They should have been recalled tbh.

  • Macbook Pro shuts down unexpectantly with warning

I just got the new Macbook Pro 15" in January and have not had many problems with it. I change jobs a lot and in the last 2 months when i had it at work the screen would start going dark from top to bottom and a warning would pop up saying i needed to shut down. I thought this was realated to the wifi connection at work since they are PC based and figured someone else had landed on the same signal i was using, but this morning it happened at home, where i don't have wifi- I use the Ethernet connection jack. I have not been successfull in finding any reference to this. Does anyone have an idea?
According to the software update panel i have all the current updates.

I have been doing several different things. sometimes I was Online with Safari via the wifi at work but a couple times I was working offline in word for mac or photoshop (although still had airport turned on) and the last 2 times I was at home on safari through my dsl line. I thought it was related to the wifi until it started happening at home.

  • Macbook Pro shutting down unexpectedly

Ever since i've purchased my Macbook Air in August 2012, there has been several times that the machine just shuts down abrubtly even when the system is fully charged. It would re start only when i connect the charger to the machine. Several visits to the service centre have been made and time and again, i've been told that the machine needs to undergo an SMC update. The problem reoccurs time and again. Can anyone suggest how to sort this once and for all??

It is possible; I had a macbook that wouldn't turn on at all while a bad battery was installed. Even if it wasn't having a charged could possibly prevent a shutdown.

Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. The power adapter indicator light may cycle off / on once.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
