MacBook Pro shuts down when i close the lid

Hey,
My MacBook Pro shuts down when i close the lid.
It started to do this one or two times, but now it is every time.
I have the latest battery update, so this should not be the issue here..
Any sugestions??
I have started to suspect the it might be some faulty conecctions or somthing..

If it's unable to go into the proper sleep state for some reason then it will do that.
Run /Utilities/Console and click 'All Messages' top left then close the lid, wait a minute then open it again - if it's shut down then reboot and open Console again and check the latest log lines looking for 'sleepimage' - it should give you an indication of what happened/didn't. If you're not sure what it all means post _just those lines_ here.

  • I recently got my GPU error fixed, but now my MacBook Pro shuts down whenever I close the lid.

I bought my computer in July 2010.  After 3 and a half years I finally discovered there was and an issue.  GPU error. Fine. ok.  I went to the store and even though they were nice enough to fix it for free, I'm now having another issue.  Whenever I shut my computer lid, the screen and keyboard doesn't work.  I can hear the computer fans but no matter what I do I can't get the keyboard or screen to work.  In order to get it to turn back on, I have to hold down the power button until I hear the inside turn off.  Then I have to hold the power button again to turn it back on.  DId they give me a faulty part when they fixed it? Or is there something I can do? My computer is in great condition. No scratches, never been dropped, etc.  HOW DO I GET MY SCREEN AND KEYBOARD TO WORK?

    Try resetting the  SMC http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
If not take it back to where you had the work done.

MacBook Pro shuts down when I close lid. How can I prevent it?

Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. The power adapter indicator light may cycle off / on once.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • How do I get my lap top to shut down when I close the lid?

I have tried to switch on the function that shuts down my lap top when I close the lid but am either dumb or lazy and gave up too quickly.... any help would be greatly apprecated.

    Thanks Poikkeus
My mac goes to sleep when I close the lid pretty quickly but when I open up the lid it opens up again where I left off.
Some nice person burgled me some time ago and stole my mac so I want to force my mac to close right down so when someone else opens up they are forced to open up in guest.  I can then track my mac without risking them accessing my personal details etc.

  • Laptop shuts down when I close the lid

I just recently purchased an HP Pavilion x360. It was working fine until HP did an update and now everytime I close the lid, the computer shuts down and has to restart when I open it. I've checked all of the power settings, including the one that allows you to specify what it should do when I close the lid but having found nothing that helps. Any suggestions? Robby

For you to have the best experience in the HP forum, I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I understand that before you did a HP update you were able to close the lid and reopen without Windows restarting, but no longer. You have checked the power management setting and the option for what happens when you close the lid, but no change. I suggest you do a scan for corrupted files. This process will also try to repair any corrupted files it locates.Go to the command prompt and right click on it and run as administratorType sfc /scannow and press enterWait for this to complete and restart your notebook. Windows 8 has a built in troubleshooter you could also try.Press the Windows key + C to open charmsType troubleshoot performance and press enter.Follow the on screen prompts. If that did not help. you can do a restore back to before you installed the update. You also have the optiion to do a Refresh Your PC to Resolve Problems (Windows 8).  To be on the safe side I would backup your personal data first, to ensure no personal data is lost. You could also do a recovery back to factory.  Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8).  You will receive a prompt to backup your personal files to prevent data loss, if you have not done one recently, I  suggetst you do one now.Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows 8) With the notebook being a fairly recent purchase, you could also contact HP support for assistance.  They can remotely log onto your system to aid with locating and resolving issues.    Please call HP technical support at 800-474-6836. • Why does my macbook pro shut down when I close it?

For about a week, SOME of the time when I close my lid, my laptop will shut down. It doesn't happen all the time, maybe about 50%, but when it does I have to hold down the power button for about 5 seconds, and then let go, then hold it down again for about 15 seconds to get it to turn back on. Has anyone else had this problem? I've had this laptop for coming up on 2 years.

Reset your SMC, as described here:

  • Can I keep my MacBook Pro from sleeping when I close the lid?

Is there a way to close the lid on my MacBook Pro without putting it to sleep so that it will continue to play music via USB to my stereo?
I want to use my Macbook Pro to play music on Amarra or iTunes via USB to a DAC connected to my stereo.  The MBP will be on a shelf in my stereo cabinet where the lid cannot remain open.  I do not wish to connect an external mouse, keyboard or display to the MBP.  Is there a way to keep playing the music with the lid closed?
    Thanks.

I noticed that the Full Charge Capacity is not that high compared to other macbooks. Could this be the reason why its shutting its self off? Also i copied this info while i was plugged into the AC adaptor. It also says that its fully charged but the percentage on my macbook reads 97%...
I also installed 4GB ram in it 4 months ago and never had this problem. Could having the new ram in it be draining the battery?
If someone could help me with this extremely annoying problem it would really be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

I am having the same problem. I just recently noticed that my battery life was less than an hour. In the beginning, I was able to watch 3-4 complete movies while on a flight. Now, it shuts down if on batteries within 10 minutes while the Bar shows 59 minutes.

As you can see, I have only 57 cycles on this battery. I cannot do anything on battery power only anymore. I spent all morning draining the battery to 0 (all lights on battery off) When the battery is charged and when on battery power, the computer will shut off. The battery charge indicator LEDs on the battery itself has 4 of 5 solid and 5th one blinking. The computer will not power on for about 5 minutes when on battery power only. I bought this MBP about 15 months ago. Any help would be appreciated

  • My Macbook Pro shuts down after I close my lid for a prolonged time

Everytime, on my Macbook Pro 2010 edition, I close my lid, when I try to wake up my laptop (open the lid) it appears with a black screen. I have to manually shut it down by force shutting it down. This happens every time I close my lid for over 15 minutes or so. I have done a SMC and PRAM test, nothing has been fixed. I need help

My macbook wont shut down when I close lid, how do I prevent this?
This had happened before and I seem to recall having to disable blue tooth.
    Is this correct?
    Charles

It's not suppose to shut down when closing the lid, it's supposed to sleep.

  • My MacBook Pro shuts down when i connect a USB cable.

My MacBook Pro shuts down when  i connect a USB cable, only when its a 30 pin apple cable. Well one USB shuts it down and the other one doesn't work at all.
it only happens when i use an apple cable. It has no problem with my external drive nor with other things.
Ps. i did use different apple cables and they all shut it down.

What are you connecting? iPad, iPhone, what?
When you say a 30-pin Apple cable do you mean a Lightening to USB cable?
    Little more info needed...

  • Pre Turns Off or Shuts Down when I close the keyboard

Is my pre screwed or is it OS?
It shuts off, not the version that other people have had where you have to pop the battery (the power button still works to turn it back on) out to get it to restart.  Anyway, it shuts off when I slide it closed.  I thought maybe something loose so I did it very slowly, not allowing it to even go all the way, the minute that the sensor tripped it back into "no keyboard" mode it turns off.
It's especially bad when on bluetooth...happens every single time.
Is there a solution for this.  Please palm, a lot of people are having this problem and there is no answer yet?
Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)

Palm is on deathwatch.  The Pre could have really kept them afloat, but there are too many problems with it.  When I first got my Pre in June, it was awesome!  Everything worked great.  But now, I am always having problems with it.  Here is the list:
    1. Pre turns off or shuts down when I close the keyboard.  (I had to make this one the first on the list since it is the topic.)
    2. Pre turn off or shuts down for no apparent reason and the only solution is to remove the battery, wait a second, put the battery back in, then turn it back on.  This takes forever.  Plus, because I have removed the back so often, my Pre squeaks when I am typing (from the plastic).  It is very annoying.
    3. The navigation system has a glitch where most of the time, it cannot find my current location.  The message says to make sure I am in clear view of the sky, but i always am.  There are many posts about this problem in other sections.  There are some solutions, and the often work, but it takes 5 minutes to reset the system.  It is a beating.
    4. The navigation system voice is usually very clear, but sometimes, the voice will skip over the names of streets as she is calling out the directions.  Ex. "Turn right on ________ Drive."
    5. Sometimes the keyboard will stop working.  I have to remove/replace the battery.  Again, this is time-consuming and further contributes to the squeaking problem when typing because you have removed the back so many times.
I like Sprint because I can get unlimited data, txt, and mobile-to-mobile calling for $70/mo.  So, I hope that someone comes out with a great touch-screen phone (not the BB Storm), because I want to stick with Sprint.  If you go with an iphone, you have to get AT&T, which will cost you at least $100 for the same.  That is a $360/yr difference!  I am sticking with Sprint.

  • MacBook Air shuts down when I close it

Whenever I close my MacBook, it shuts down instead of going into sleep mode. At first, I thought it was a problem with my MacBook not waking up from sleep at all, but if I use the Sleep function from the drop down menu, it will wake up normally.
I've looked around the community to see if anyone had a similar issue, but most people say they need to reboot it to start it up again, which isn't my case at all. It just does a typical shut down. How do I make it go to sleep instead of shutting down when I close it?

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    bzgrep 'Previous Shutdown' /var/log/system.log*
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.
