Macbook Pro shuts off after few seconds of gray screen

Help - I came home to discover my power cord had died and my laptop turned off due to no power. I used a friend's power cord to turn it on later that night and send some emails. I bought a new power cord the next day, plugged in, and turned  the laptop on. It stayed on the gray screen with a spinning wheel beneath the apple logo for a while. I restarted it and it turned off after a few seconds of the gray screen. An empty bar flashes twice horizontally at the bottom before the spinning bar begins.
I tried booting in safe mode, but it would just stay on the gray screen. I tried doing shift+command+v and received a message about keys out of order and disk error full, can't repair. I was able to boot from the install disc, and when I click "Repair Disc" I get the same erros. Not sure what to do now?

Would my time machine data be preserved with this?
Well this is the big gamble. You really don't know for sure.
TimeMachine has gotten corrupted from a failing original drive and then unable to restore properly to a new drive.
It's not like you can access the files on a TM drive directly and cherry pick what you need and leave the rest. It's all or nothing.
If you go erasing your only other copy on the boot drive, which the files still could be accessed from another boot drive, and if you find out the TimeMachine drive can't restore, then your up the creek without a paddle right?
So if your able, create a data recovery drive and try to rescue your second copy of the files on the boot drive or restore the TM drive to the second boot drive , so this way your files can be accessed directly if you need it and you have two copies again.
Once you can direclty access your files then you can go about erasing and installing on the internal boot drive.

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

15"Macbook Pro shuts off after 5 minutes when using full-charged battery.  If not touched, computer stays on.  But start typing, it shuts off.  Was told this was a fan problem.  Had fan replaced last spring.  But problem has begun again.  Is this a battery issue or somethig else?

  • Rebel T3 keeps shutting off after few seconds of videoing

I purchased a Rebel T3 for my daughter a few months ago.  We are having trouble getting it to video.  It keeps shutting off after a few seconds.  It has a clean class 10 - 32gb card in it.  Help please!  (we have used a couple different cards in it, they all do fine & take excellent photos, just MAJOR problem trying to use the video mode)  I have a T1i & have no trouble with the video on mine.

The manual may state Class 6 as the minimum speed for reliable HD video capture, but that it is most definitely not the fastest card supported by the camera.
The camera is able to take advantage of cards rated for speeds up to 45MB/s which should be at least 2x faster than the fastest Class 10 cards and about 4.5x faster than a Class 10 card operating at minimum spec of 10MB/s.  A Class 10 card is rated for minimum throughput of 10MB/s write speeds. So, it should be between 7-8x faster than a Class 6 card performing at it's specified minimum 6MB/s speed.
So you really need to be looking at the write speed of the SD cards you buy.  But, this assumes that the SD card is the problem which it may not be.

  • MacBook Pro shuts off after attempting to boot

So I may have accidentally deleted a file that I thought was a temp connected to another file. I stopped the deletion when I realized it was a large file. I restarted my computer and when it starts to boot, and during the spinning wheel, it shuts off. I do have a recent back up of my system, though I can't start it to do anything.
Can anyone give me some ideas of how I might be able to correct?
I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro.
    Thanks.

Boot to the Mac OS X Utilities Recovery HD system. At startup hold down the Command + r key to access that system. then select Reinstall Mac OS X. A fresh copy of Lion will be downloaded from the internet and installed on your Mac. Doing this so called Over the Top reinstall should not affect any other files on your Mac other than to replace the file/s you deleted.
You can also use that Mac Utilities boot to restore your system from your Time Machine backup which might be the best thing to do. Have the TM backup drive connected before you start the Recovery boot process.

  • 2009 MacBook Pro shuts off after low battery warning.

Today I got the warning at 10% and about a minute later, the computer just zapped off. I only had internet (Facebook and email) and iTunes open. This has happened before, more often recently, where it shuts off shortly after the warning. I've been wondering if I have a bad battery because sometimes the computer has drained all the way to 0% and then zaps off.
Is this fixable with the current battery? Or is it just old and likely needs replacement?
    Any input is appreciated. Thanks!!

  • Macbook Pro shut off and won't turn on or charge?

I purchased my Macbook Pro August 1st 2012 at Best Buy and in April it shut off for no reason and it wouldn't charge. Apple replaced the battery cable and my Macbook worked for a couple of weeks, then in May same thing happened and Apple replaced the MLB, a couple days later the same thing happens and Apple replaces the Magsafe board with cable. Then a few days later specific keys on the keyboard stop working and Apple replaces the topcase with keyboard. Now 120 days later my Macbook Pro shuts off and won't charge for the 4th time. My Macbook is now out of warranty but I don't think I should pay since this is the 4th time my MacBook Pro shuts off for no reason and won't charge. Yes I already tried reseting the smc, still didn't work. What could be causing this and is there anyway Apple will cover this since is the 4th time it shuts off for no reason?

Call Apple Customer relation and explain your situation. Have your receipts for the work that was already preformed on it and ask them to replace it with a new unit.

  • Issues With MacBook Pro Shutting Off

I have been having troubles the past couple of days with my MacBook Pro shutting off when running on battery power.
MacBook Pro OSX 10.4.11. 2.16 Intel Core Duo. 1 G Ram.
I will have plenty of battery charge and then "poof", computer just goes black and has no power. It does turn back on, but gets annoying. Everything runs fine when plugged into the wall.
Anyone have any ideas of what may be causing this?
    Thanks.

How old is your machine? This sort of thing is covered under warranty (or apple car). I got a new one about a year ago that way. Apple WILL ask for number of charge cycles. Believe it or not, high numbers can be good because it says that you have actually been using the battery and it's not just dead from sitting unused.
It sounds like you have a dead cell. Your battery is separated into several compartments. Your charge looks fine until that cell is actually needed. At that point, CLUNK. Nothing works.

  • Macbook Pro shutting off when closed - Mountain Lion

Just upgraded to Mountain Lion and now my macbook pro shuts off instead of sleeps everytime i close the screen and needs to be re-booted when screen is re-opened. Any one had the same issue and any known fixes?

Check System Preferences --> Energy Saver and make sure you do not have the sleep sliders set to "Never".
This may pertain to either or both Battery and/or Power Adapter tabs in System Preferences.

  • Hp zr2740w turns off after few seconds

I have the same problem as described in an earlier post:
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Audio-Video-Monitors/hp-zr2740w-turns-off-after-few-seconds/m-p...
My HP zr2740w turns off after a second or so. Tested with vga/dvi/displayport and desktop pc/laptop, so it's not a cable issue.
My hp zr2740w was bought in July 2012 so it's probably out of warranty. I live in Finland. The webshop I ordered the hp zr2740w does not exist anymore. The HP support pages don't seem to have any support numbers for displays.
I took the display to a local IT support / electrician guy and he said it's a power supply issue. But he couldn't find a place to order the part so he could replace it.
Hopefully I'll get some answer here or an idea what to do. Wouldn't want to throw away an expensive display just because it has power issues.

  • Shooting a video works sometimes, but sometimes it shuts off after one second without recording any video

Have had the Turbo Droid for only 3 days and just tried to shoot video. Twice it worked, but more often it seems to begin recording, but shuts off after one second without recording anything.
Not sure what I'm doing wrong to cause this to happen.
    Can you help?
    Thanks!

    Thanks, EfrainM_VZW.
Haven't seen any error messages. Occasionallly, but only rarely, the video will record 1-2 frames, but most of the time it just shuts down. I have tried it with and without the rubber-grip case; taking off the case had no effect. The video still would not function.
When you tap the video camera icon, it tries to shoot video and seems to begin to record, but one (or two) second(s) later, it beeps and stops. Rarely with a frame or so of video; mostly nothing is recorded.
The still camera works great! Love being able to touch it anywhere to grab a snap.
BTW, my partner and I got identical phones at the same time last week. His video has the exact same problems as my phone.
Another point: I downloaded the Google Camera and can shoot video just fine through that camera. But not through the stock Motorola camera that came with the Droid Turbos.
I'm starting to think we got phones from a defective batch.
    What do you think?
