Hi all,
My Macbook Pro has become exceptionally slow after a shockwave update. The fan is on constantly and the activity monitor shows firefox to be using around 100% of resources. Has anyone got any suggestions?

  • Macbook Pro slow after Maverick's install

My Macbook Pro is painfully slow after Maverick update last week. HELP

    gramacindy,
yes, thank you. Insufficient disk space is not the cause of the slowdown. Depending upon which apps you typically run, you might benefit from upgrading its RAM from 4 GB to 8 GB — but whether that upgrade would help depends upon other factors.
If you boot into Safe mode, log in, and immediately restart into normal mode, is your MacBook Pro still painfully slow? If it is, download and install EtreCheck, and please include in your reply a copy of the output generated by a run of EtreCheck.

  • Macbook pro slow after update...

I did a clean install on my macbook pro 2010 using snow leopard. After i updated it to 10.6.8, it started lagging, whats the solution to this problem other than doing another clean install and not updating it?

Have you downloaded any software since installing 10.6? I've seen similar performance issues where someone downloaded the wrong level of program which installed a wrong level of driver. Check on the System Prefences pane and the bottom and under your login ID, any login items.
You can easily check if that's the issue by booting into safe mode (hold shift key down when booting). The boot itself will take longer than normal, because it does some disk maintenance. After it completes, see what response times are like.

I would get rid of uTorrent because you can download all sorts of malware using it. Also try taking Chrome out of your login items as it tends to be a resource hog.

  • MacBook Pro Slow after upgrading OS

Hey guys, I'm having a problem my MacBook Pro is running incredibly slow after upgrading to Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  I started having the problem originally after upgrading to the latest version of Mavericks. It is just incredibly slow for some reason, things are lagging upwards of 2-3 minutes I got sick and tired of it so I installed a brand new 120 GB SSD from PNY, and installed Snow Leopard because that's what originally came with the computer, I figured it'd work best. When I installed the 10.6.3 disk everything absolutely FLEW! Then after I upgraded to 10.6.8 it is like frozen molasses and I don't know why.  It's a fresh install and doesn't have anything going.  However when I open up the Activity Monitor it says that my CPU Usage is being ate up by system processes and I don't know what to do.  I also started it up in Safe Mode and it works just fine like that.  Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I've got a Mid 2010 MBP with a 2.66 GHz Intel Cor 2 Duo and 4 GB ram.  I upgraded my HD to a 120 GB PNY SSD.

And make sure there's enough free storage space.
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage  Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space. Less can slow your Mac down.
Make sure your Mac's software is up to date. Click Software Update from your Apple  drop down menu.
    Repair permissions.
Launch Disk Utility located in your Applications > Utilities folder.
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
    Click:   Repair Disk Permissions
This can take awhile so don't be alarmed.
Restart your Mac after Disk Utility is finished
Reindex Spotlight: Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes
Check to see if the startup disk needs repairing.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If Disk Utility reports errors, start up from your Mac install disc to make repairs.

  • Macbook Pro slow after Mavericks Install

Hi all, new here . I have a problem with my 2012 Macbook Pro (2.5 Ghz Intel Core i5, 4 GB 1600 Mhz DDR3, OSX 10.9.5). I originally had Lion installed on it... never bothered to upgrade to Mountain Lion, but about 2 months back I upgraded to Mavericks.
I don't use heavy programs like Photoshop or iMovie; mostly just browsing, email, videos etc. but I may have multiple programs open at the same time. I've never had a problem with Lion.
Now after upgrading to Mavericks, I noticed a distinct slow down. Not super slow... but slow enough that programs would take 5-8 seconds to open. Like Microsoft word, or a second window of Chrome, or Activity Monitor. Never had this lag on Lion.
I've researched upgrading RAM, but I wanted to get your fine folks opinion first on what it could be. Any ideas?

    Hi PacNorWest,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
If your Mac is running slowly in Mavericks, I would recommend using the information in the attached article to help alleviate the issue.

  • HT4718 I have a new MACBOOK PRO and after running updates IPhoto does not work

After installing Iphoto 9.4.1 from the MACSTORE updates Iphot will not run.  I downloaded (.4.1 again and tried to install but it says that the update must be done from the Mac store.  But I do not show any updates when checking the mac store and do not know how to proceed.  I just purchased the computer and set it up on Saturday.  I transferred files from an older Macbook pro.

  • 2012 Macbook pro Slow after final Yosemite upgrade

I have a mid-2012 Macbook Pro 13" with 8gb Ram and 256gb Samsung SSD (Upgraded from the stock apple 128gb SSD). During Mavericks and the whole Yosemite Beta (1-6), my Mac has been running really smoothly and quick. After the public release of Yosemite, it is now super slow. Everything takes 45 seconds to do (like opening something). I took it to the Apple store today and they said it was an early hard drive failure. We did the test and it appears to be a SMART (S.M.A.R.T.) hard drive failure. They offered to put a new 128gb Apple SSD for $450 + service fees. (Why would I ever even think about doing that?!?! That is outrageously high!)
I looked online and I am not the first to experience this problem. I saw at least 8 people that got the SMART hard drive failure after they upgraded to Yosemite. I have a funny feeling that Yosemite is doing something to cause this problem. We can't all just randomly get this hard drive error after upgrading, can we? Seems more unlikely than not.
I know that SMART is non OS specific. I know that a SMART failure can become bad and I can lose all my data. I am just wondering if this is REALLY the issue. Anyone else experience the same thing? Is there a way to bypass SMART? I can't wait 2 weeks to warranty the SSD. I am a college student and I use this all day every day, and I have important stuff on here (which yes, I have backed up).
I am under warranty. I can go and return and get a replacement drive, but I would much much much rather not. I have also disabled File Vault.
So to sum up: Can I get around this feature? Can I do something other than replace this? Anyone else experience this? When is the next version of Yosemite coming out?

Get rid of Kapersky unless you enjoy having a 2014 computer that runs like and old DOS Machine from the 80s.

  • MacBook Pro slower after upgrading to mountain lion?

    MacBook Pro 2009
    Factory setting: Snow Leopard
Just 2 days ago, I reformatted my macbook back to its factory settings. Processing speed was fast and opening of apps does not seem to lag. Booting up and shutting down only took seconds. After reformatting my macbook, I upgraded my iOS from snow leopard to mountain lion and that is where the problems arises.
    1. Booting up and shutting takes much longer time? It used to be less than 10 seconds however, now it takes about 40-50 seconds.
    2. Opening of apps seemed to be slower. Example: When I open my iTunes, the app will bounce a few times and takes a few seconds (longer than before) for the app to appear.
    3. Whenever I try to select something when surfing net or doing some other programs, the mouse cursor will never fail to change to the "colourful ball" which I will have to wait for it to load.
    Can anyone help here?

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

The report show many hard drive errors. Did you run Disk Utiltiy from your recovery partition before upgrading the OS? Always a good action. You can run Disk Utility now while booted from your Recovery partition (press and hold command-r while booting) and see it it can repair the issues.
You hard drive is not full enough yet to cause major slowdowns but you need to keep and eye on it and make sure it does not get any more full. You have 53GB (about 10 percent) free space now. You should make sure you don't go below about 20GB. If your physical RAM fills up, Virtual Memory must find qualifying blocks on the hard drive to write swap data and, when teh drive gets crowded, VM's search process slows as does yo uoverapll performance.
You have  LOT of third-party stuff installed. "NoSleep" sounds like it could be modifying system resources; see if disabling it helps.

  • Brand new Macbook Pro freezes after iTunes-update??

Updated itunes to 10.5.1 last night and now itunes and my brand new Macbook Pro freezes whenever I open iTunes. I got it last week and it has worked perfectly, but now it freezes and has trouble finding the wifi. What to do?? Can I somehow undo the update?

Is this Java based game Runescape? I experience the same crashes, ive tried using other things in-game other than the OpenGl and i still experience crashes, much more often when i have iTunes running while trying to play. Ive never had problems like this before, even while using older computers with much less memory, etc.. This is my first mac and id have to say it's not leaving a good impression. I planned to be able to play some games on this and consider Runescape requires very low CPU this is kind of sad that a Mac can't process it without crashing. Ive been reading lots of similar posts online and it sounds like Apple should be worried more about customer satisfaction than their own stocks. Hope something works out soon!!

  • MacBook Pro freezes after mavericks update

Ever since I've downloaded the new mavericks software my MacBook Pro has been freezing and after each click of the mouse or letter punched on the keyboard this stupid spinning wheel of death pops up for about half an hour before I can do anything. HELP!

If those articles don't help, the next time the problem happens, note the date and time the problem occurred, then go to Applications/Utilities/Console and copy the log starting at the time of the crash. Paste the log in a reply. Please do not use a screen shot as they can be hard to read. If there are repeated runs of the same messages, please post only one run. Be selective about what you post and don’t  post huge amounts. Make sure there is no personal data visible. Information learned from Linc Davis.

  • MacBook Pro slow after using graphics programs

    I'm an architecture student and I have a MacBook Pro 15 ', bought in January 2009 (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz / 4 GB Ram / 320 GB HD / NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 Mb - NVIDIA GeForce 6600M GT 512MB) with Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6.7).
While studying architecture I find myself often using graphics programs, with jobs that require lots of computing power, this is the second time I have the same problem:
    - Use Photoshop CS5 with a large file (around a 1 GB), the computer is not connected with the power, thus using the battery.
The next day I turn on the computer, is considerably slower, noting that the Dock is not fluid, the application menu is jerky, and when moving from one Space to another is no more fluidity.
If I start to use some programs, or even just listening to music with iTunes and surf the Web, is very slow.
I've already done this, so almost the same a few months ago, I tried resetting PRAM and NVRAM, disk repair, repair disk permissions, delete cache system,
I checked the processes in Activity Monitor, closing the most expensive and controlling those that run on Login, I disabled Spotlight, almost complete depletion of HD, removal of most of the programs and any other what is usually recommended in these cases. But nothing worked, until I used the startup disk by deleting everything.
A months later I have the same problem, and I have tried everything I already tried, but the formatting.
In addition to solving the problem, now I would also understand why every time I use my MacBook Pro from € 2000, bought specifically for work with these types of programs and files, I have this type of problems.
Thank you in advance for your interest and hope to receive your early clarification on the matter.

    Duplicate post. Reported.

  • MacBook Pro overheating after security update

Why is my Macbook Pro overheating?

None of your images are displayed.  If you could try again it might be of help.
118° f is satisfactory and not to be alarmed at.  Aperture certainly can increase the temperature.  I surmise that your MBP is a pre-unibody model.
Here are the list of videos from the OWC web site.  Choose the one for the model that you have, 15" or 17" and look at one at replacing the HDD to understand how to take the top cover off.  Having an older MBP, you may have dirt and dust inside that should be cleaned out and this is the only way of accessing it. Contaminants can be a cause of heat buildup.

You will need a #00 Phillips and a #6 Torx drivers for this.  I suggest doing this on a clear table with a towel underneath.  That way you can slide the MBP easily around and if you drop one of the screws, they will not bounce far.  Sequence is important and taking off the top cover should be done with care so that the ribbon cable is not damaged.
