MacBook Pro slow shutdown after installing SSD drive
Hi,
Just got a new 256GB SSD drive and installed it in my Macbook Pro, super super fast might I add. Startup in a couple of seconds, and apps open very fast. The only problem is the shutdown time, it takes over a minute to shutdown, really strange. I've read this post;
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=13097765
But this does not solve my problem. Any ideas what could be the problem?
Have you tried booting into your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys whilst booting).
I don't know why an iTunes update would cause your MBP to shutdown and not turn back on. If you can't boot into your Recovery partition, try running the Apple Hardware Test (if you can - if you can't, it's time for a trip to your local Apple Store or AASP).

Slow boot after installing SSD drive + Grub problem + Kernel panicks
Hey
So i just got a Samsung 840 EVO, and was ready to see my system fly, so i installed Arch on it, the instalation was kinda weird, since im in the middle of some major developing for a startup i couldnt risk to lose time configuring my all system so what i did was this:
Install Arch on the SSD (/root on sdb1) while keeping my other Arch install (/root on sda5) and sharing the /home and /swap (on sda6 and sda7) between both systems, i installed grub on sdb also because i didnt knew what to do
So now when i boot the laptop i get the grub from sda wich only has Old Arch and windows, if i press f9 at boot and boot from the ssd i go to sdb grub that has Old Arch, New Arch and Windows, since the SSD was instaled via a caddy it doesnt get recognized in the BIOS, but strangely i get 2 Universal Hard Drives (hdd and sdd) when pressing f9
So first question is, should i reeinstall grub on sda or is there a way to put the SDD as primary?
The other problem is that systemd-analyze is giving me worst times than with the hdd, and i dont see a huge improvement with the SSD as i should. Is it because i have /home /swap on the hdd? I have read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Solid_State_Drives and did as told.

Your "slow boot" is a seperate problem, see the thread you linked too for how to fix that.
Its a fresh install but i alredy have DE and programs, i used Helmuth script to install all the stuff, just so i didnt forget to install stuff.
No idea what this means, but if it is some third party script downloaded off the internet - use them only if you understand exactly what it does, else the chances are you will run into some problems with no idea how you got there. For simply keeping a list of packages to install, put them in a text file and pipe them into pacman (see also here. -

Do the 2011 Macbook Pros with an Apple installed SSD have cooling fans?
Do the 2011 Macbook Pros with an Apple installed SSD have cooling fans? In other words, I pre ordered the 256 SSD option with my purchase from Apple. I have searched and searched the internet for a clear answer. I have called Apple and have gotten contradictory answers. Can anyone definitively answer this question?
It's unbelievable that anyone purporting to represent Apple could have misinformed you in such a ridiculous way. Apple has never produced a MBP that didn't have one or more cooling fans in it. The percentage of total heat generated by a MBP that comes from its hard drive (or SSD) is tiny — I would guess it's considerably less than 5%. The notion that the machine could dispense with cooling fans as a result of switching from a conventional drive to a SSD is laughable.
I can only assume that you posed the question in such a way that it was not clearly understood by the people responding.

<Email Edited By Host>Hi RobertRak
I can only say I have a Samsung SSD 840 EVO 1TB installed in my MacBook Pro 17”. Speeds are exquisite: Write: 479.1MB/s Read: 508.9MB/s
Like Melophage, I left the Optical drive in place.
My only thought for your case is to check firmware of the Samsung SSD drive.
Samsung SSD website: http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/samsungssd/downloads.html
I think i used DiskUtility to clone the ISO to USB flashdrive or CD-RW. It was a challenge to get the Mac to boot from their DOS, but once successful you should get to the latest firmware. The Samsung needs to be in the internal SATA connection.
Be aware that the POST check your Mac does on startup will always take time. Depends on amount of RAM, how long your other internal spindle drive takes to get to speed and unpark the heads etc.
Can't say i've counted the boot time on mine. I know it's quicker now since putting the SSD in.
You will need at least 10% free space left on the boot SSD too BTW.
Hope this assists.

Old MacBook Pro slow and hangs frequently, hard drive problems?
Hi,
I have an old Macbook Pro (one of the originals, from about 4 1/2 years ago). Recently I've been noticing that it runs really slow, especially when its been running for a while and there are multiple programs open. It will take a long time to switch between windows, opening a tab in Safari will usually cause a spinning beach ball for 10-15 seconds and Safari crashes frequently. Other programs have similar problems, but don't normally crash. It's running Snow Leopard and has 1GB of RAM. Obviously I expect it to be slower with lots of stuff open, but my usage patterns haven't changed and its performance certainly has. The harddrive always seems to be being accessed when I have these problems.
The hard drive S.M.A.R.T. status is "verified," and I ran the Apple Hardware Test and it came out fine. But I'm still really worried that something could be going wrong, especially with the hard drive and since I am going away in a few weeks to work on a project and will be away from my backup drive I really want to make sure any problem is taken care of beforehand.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be the the problem or about anything I should try?
Much Thanks. With lots of concurrent processes and insufficient memory you will experience slow performance and beachballing. This is because the OS is forced to use the hard drive to replace the non-existent physical RAM. See the following:
About OS X Memory Management and Usage
Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor
Memory Management in Mac OS X
Performance Guidelines- Memory Management in Mac OS X
A detailed look at memory usage in OS X
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Also, a small hard drive with too little free space and a system lacking in any regular maintenance can also lead to slow performance. See the following:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
Backuplist
Carbon Copy Cloner
Data Backup
Deja Vu
iBackup
JaBack
Silver Keeper
MimMac
Retrospect
Super Flexible File Synchronizer
ynchronizer
SuperDuper!
Synchronize Pro! X
SyncTwoFolders
Synk Pro
Synk Standard
Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
This should give you a few things to start sorting things out and getting better performance from your computer within its limitations.
If you have a Core Duo model then 2 GBs is the maximum RAM you can install. If you have a Core 2 Duo model then you can install up to 4 GBs but they system will only make use of 3 GBs. As for the hard drive it can be replaced. Notebook drives in the 250 to 500 GB - 7200 RPM range are relatively inexpensive. Visit OWC for pricing on drives and RAM. Visit Data Mem for pricing on RAM. -
Apple Raid Card panic on Mac Pro Early 2008 after installing SSD as an enhanced JBOD.
I recently installed a SSD drive in my Mac Pro to replace an aging, original boot drive. I have an Apple raid card with 3 other hds attached - all in an enhanced JBOD configuration. After installing the SSD from OWC (3G Electra SATA II Compatible) everything appeared to work fine. But after 36 hours I received a apple raid card kernel panic alert. See below for diagnostic crash log. OWC support says that their drive should work fine - now I am not so sure. Anyone out there with suggestions/solutions is most welcomed.

Thunderbolt Bus:RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
1) Apple brand cards,
2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
1) Apple brand cards:
• Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
• Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
• NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
• NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
• SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
• EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
• running 10.8.3 or later AND
• don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
• can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards" -
I killed a MacBook Pro. Shutdown with flash in drive and now it won't start at all.
I may have killed my MacBook Pro OS X by accidentally restarting with a Flash Drive it it and now it won't start at all. Any ideas?
So it is powering on. You did not state that before. In that case:
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Also see this if above doesn't work:
Install OS X from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should install the original version of OS X that came on the machine. -
Brand new macbook pro slows down after I transfer files on from old computer
Hey, I just purchased a brand new Macbook Pro 3.5 GhZ Haswell processor, 500 gb of flash memory, 16 gb of RAM, OS X Mavericks, 17" retina display and while it's been great upon first booting up after I transferred over my music and books and docs from my old mac (about 150 gb worth (so I still have over 300 gb free on the new one)) I've seen a massive slow down and it's started giving me the beach ball of death which was the main reason I got a new macbook as my old one was beach balling so much it was nearly unusable. Very upset that this brand new stupidly expensive computer is already doing this. Any advice is apppreciated.
Either your RAM is no good, of poor quality, the wrong specs or it's not installed correctly or it got subjected to static electricity when you put it in.
Best Buy isn't as Mac centric, thus the quality of RAM that Mac's require may not be there.
You should have purchased from Crucial.com or Other World Computing or similar that tests the RAM to make sure it works the first time you put it in, as it costs everyone money to ship bad RAM back and forth.
I put in 16GB a couple of days ago, took five minutes and it works perfectly.
Nothing like top tier RAM for a top of the line machine, especially with all those tiny, easy to lose screws Apple uses. -
Macbook Pro route probelm after installing 10.4.6
My wife just unpacked her new Macbook pro -- my first impressed is how fast it was. Amazing machine.
With the machine set up to 10.4.5 the wirless works flalessly, however after upgrading to 10.4.6 DHCP no longer appears to negotiate an address (the IP address using the network tool is 169.254.189.105) - and yes, I have associated with the same router used with 10.4.5
I have attempted to manually assign an IP address, gateway, and DNS server to no avail. At that point, I have flushed the routing table and (route flush as root) but I can not ping my gateway...
10.4.6 on my Powerbook, and her old iBook both work fine It looks like I have a problem unique to the macbookpro.
I have installed no software on the system except for software on the apple restore DVD's, and the 10.4.6 patch. No other software has been added.I would suggest you try downloading the 10.4.6 Combo Updater (Intel) and re-applying the update. Oftentimes using the combo updater can fix problems such as these.
Be sure to configure Network preferences to use DHCP. It also can't hurt to shutdown everything for about one minute, then restart the cable/DSL modem first and wait for the status light to indicate communication with the ISP, then start the router and wait for the status light to indicate communication with the modem, and last start the Mac. -
MacBook Pro camera konked after installing latest security download today
After installing the latest security update for OS 10.5 on my 2006 MacBook Pro today, I had to reinstall a Canon multifunction machine driver (which worked), and my camera has died...last used it last night for a Skype call. Has anybody else experienced a similar problem with their camera after installing the update? and if so and if you were able to get the camera working again, how did you do it?
Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Issues with security updates frequently happen if permissions are damaged.
Go to Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility to repair permissions.
If using any third party optimization software, be careful. These can actually damage permissions and cause other corruption if run unnecessarily. The only kind of maintenance Mac OS X needs is backing up. The rest of the software that is used for this proposed purpose is really troubleshooting, not maintenance. -
Macbook pro slow with 1tb external hard drive not fully utilized
I have a 13" macbook pro (late 2011 model) 8GB ram (1333mhz) and 500gb sata drive. I use photoshop CS6 and Lightroom quite frequently and all my images are stored on a 1tb external seagate drive. The drive is 70% full but the macbook is not able to open folders. The drive does show up in the finder but seems blank though all the files are on it. I do not keep much on my internal hard drive so the computer is not inundated with data in anyway. Please let me know how I can fix this
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
{ diskutil list; echo; diskutil cs list; } | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context. -
Black screen on MacBook Pro Retina Display after installing Moutain Lion. Need Help!
My macbook pro (retina) screen went black after I installed Mountain Lion.
I got a HDMI cable to another monitor and the image worked nicely there.
But i cant get it back on my MacBook Pro! I tried taking out the HDMI cable, restarting, searching on settings configs..
What should I do?
Are there any drivers i should install to get image back on my MacBook Pro Retina Display?
Has this happened to anyone else?
Thanks in advance for all the help. That helped me finding other people with similar problems.
But there is a major difference!
-They have a black screen after they login.
-My screen is black NOW! And I'm only using my BRAND NEW rmbp with the HDMI cable to my TV!
This isnt good at all and I would like to solve it asap..
I tried reinstalling Mountain Lion, taking out the hdmi cable and rebooting many times.
Until now, nothing!
Is my screen broken or maybe my video card has some problems?
I hope not! I just traveled from the US to Brazil and I dont want to search for an Apple Store here.
Any tips or ideas are welcome, thank you.
