Macbook pro slow wake when charged overnight

I have seen some other posts similar to this but that ended a few years ago and I'm hoping there might be a fix now. Apologies for the amount of detail but My macbook pro (mid 2012) has a very strange wake from sleep routine when it has been plugged into the charger for long periods and so I want to explain it properly to see if anyone can help.
I often leave it charging over night and when I go to open the lid it appears to restart by making the sound you get when you turn your mac on (sorry, I'm not very technical!) and I get the apple logo etc. It will bring me to my login screen for password (but the keyboard won't be lit) and I can't type anything in the password box for about 10 seconds. I then type my password and I get a greyed out screen with a 'progress bar' at the bottom. When it reaches full it freezes there for a bit, then the screen goes blank and the mac seems to go into sleep again. Then I press any key to wake it as usual and only THEN does the keyboard light come on and I can enter my password and log in. Sometimes I even have to go through the first process twice before I can log in.
Similarly, if I remove the charger while the lid is closed it will make the whirring noise as if it is waking (but the lid is closed). Sometimes it even makes the startup noise in which case I have to go through the whole long winded process again when I open the lid.
At first I thought I simply had a problem with my machine but after seeing that is has been an issue for some others I wasn't so sure. This is really frustrating and I would be really grateful for any suggestions.
Thanks

Same exact problem. Open lid, cursor will move but not function. IT friend said it sounds like an app in the backgroung may be linking externally somewhere and slowing everything down. Once that is done, it suddenly works. Mine has varying times of reaction time. Glad to see this is a bigger issue than just my machine.
Initial thoughts were that this was related to other apps eating up CPU or not having any gigs of memory. My IT friend said upgrading memory, or harddrive to an SMC, or faster harddrive in general from 5400 speed would likely assist and possibly circumvent the problem somewhat but, the problem really shouldn't be there given these are new machines.

  • Early 2011 Macbook Pro shuts off when charger unplugged.  Worked fine yesterday.

    Hi,
I have an early 2011 Macbook Pro, which I purchased brand new; it's just over one year old.  Yesterday the laptop held a charge no problem for 6 hours or more.  Today, when I disconnect it from the charger it goes to sleep.  When I plug it back in and press the power button it wakes up, and I can use it.
This cannot be a battery issue, since it was holding a charge without trouble yesterday.  Does this appear to be a serious issue?  My one year warranty expired 2 months ago yesterday, and I had forgot to purchase AppleCare.  Sigh.  It almost seems like surgically-planned obsolecense or punishment for not purchasing AppleCare.
I would immensely appreciate any help/suggestions on this.
    Thanks.

    OK, in that case:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Upgrading to Lion or Mountain Lion will not solve the problem.

  • Macbook Pro shuts down when asleep overnight

Specs: Macbook Pro 9,1, 2.6 Ghz I7, 8GB Ram, running 10.8.2.  No other problems that I'm aware of.  This started a couple of weeks ago:
Behavior: When putting my Macbook Pro to sleep overnight, it shuts down several hours into the sleep process.  A press of the return key restarts the computer.  This behavior is not desired.  I want the computer to sleep overnight, not shut down.  The computer is not on a schedule to shut down or restart.
Other programs running: Dropbox, Google Drive, Fantastical, TotalFinder, Chrome
Overview of console system.log from this morning: Log begins at 12:36 am this morning while the computer is asleep.  It wakes up at 4:36 am and these are the last processes before being booted at 10:41 am.

  • Macbook Pro slow wake up time, HDD + SSD

A couple of months ago i upgraded my 2012 MacBook Pro (non retina) with an 500GB Samsung 840EVO SSD. Boot times were blazing fast as well as wake up time from sleep. After I installed the original HDD in the super drive bay as second storage, the wake up time from sleep was significantly slower. I think this has to do with the fact that HDD needs to spin up etc. etc.
My question is if Is there a way to turn it completely off? because I only store movies and games for bootcamp on it. Is there a way to tell the harddrive to always be off unless I need it?

I have not installed Yosemite (I like to wait for others to flush the bugs out - LOL).
Once I'm actually logged in, the rainbow wheel spends most of the time spinning waiting for each individual app to respond. Typing is slow, clicking is slow, the computer screen freezes more times than not. It's only after about 15 minutes of actual use that it begins to run like it should.
Yesterday morning, I had similar problems, except I was already logged in.  I was using Safari and just trying to highlight text took forever. Every click I made dragged. If I typed a 5 letter word I had to wait for them to appear. I shut it down and came back in and kept looking at the spinning wheel and had slowness.  This morning I tried again. and it continued.  But, Chrome is working normal.  So, at least for me, I get a normal response and no spinning wheel as long as I'm not using Safari.

  • Why is my Macbook Pro slow to wake after sleep?

Why is my Macbook Pro slow to wake after sleep?

I am having the same issue. I hook it up to the charger in the evening and close the lid. When I go to use it the next time it takes a good 30 seconds or so to wake up. The screen shows the log in screen but typing doesn't work and the cursor is frozen. Sometimes it will even give the rainbow wheel for the cursor, so it seem like it is processing whatever to get going. I also notice that my battery won't be fully charged at anywhere from 95%-99% after being charged a full evening. What can I do to change whatever is happening because it is pretty crappy to charge it all night expecting to have a full battery for the next use, plus the issue of having to sit there waiting for it to boot every time.

  • I just bought my macbook pro and it's charged up to 100% and is still plugged in but now shows the battery at 98%.  How is this possible when it's plugged in to the charger and the green light is on?

I just bought my macbook pro and it's charged up to 100% and is still plugged in but now shows the battery at 98%.  How is this possible when it's plugged in to the charger and the green light is on?

The system regularly lets the battery drop to about 95% when on the charger, then recharges to 100%.  This lets the batery exercise "just a little" all of the time and saves the recharge curcuits from overuse.
    Regualr occurence for me.
Also ... you need to let your battery work at least once per month.  Let it run down to 40%, but not less if you can at all avoid it.  Running thr battery fully dead will shorten the battery life significantly.

  • Mid 2010 macbook pro slow to sleep. No print queu issues.

Hey everyone! My Mid 2010 macbook pro slow is slow to go to sleep. I have read several community forums and I've checked for old print jobs (which seems to be a common issue) and have found none. I've also reset all printers and jobs.  Anyways, it takes 35 to 60 seconds to go sleep (until fan/harddrive turns off/I see blinking white light).  This slow sleep occurs even with a complete fresh install of Mavericks, and even after installing a new SSD. I am honestly at a loss.
I did the "pmset -g log" command and I have found two reoccurring things that I think might be the reason (though I don't really understand it fully). I commonly see "TimedOut InternalPreventSleep "com.apple.powermanagement.darkwakelinger" 00:00:15" commonly and "PreventUserIdleSystemSleep "Address Book Source Sync" 00:00:30".  I have bolded both of these below:

  • Macbook Pro 13 (Early 2011) Charging Problems

Recently I noticed that when I charge my macbook pro, the LED light on the magsafe would go green then orange to show that it is charging. However after a few minutes or seconds the orange LED light will go off (Stops Charging) and the whole process of charging starts again, green light then orange then nothing...
I already tried resetting the PRAM and SMU. I also tried using different wall sockets for charging and it yielded the same results. However, when i borrowed my friends mac charger, my MBP manage to charge without any problems. When he used my charger the charging problem also occurred.
So i decided to bring it to an Apple Authorized service provider sine they are no Apple Retail Stores in Thailand. I told the guy at the AASP that my charger was probably broken/faulty, but he said it was the receiver sensor of the macbook pro (The place where i connect the magsafe to my MBP ). He used a different charger (At the counter)and the LED lights when from Green, Orange then yellow and said the MBP needed to be sent to Singapore to be repaired and it would take 10 - 14 days. I said OK since my MBP was still in warranty and it would be free. Next day he called and said he fixed it by resetting something and that I could pick it up. At the AASP, the macbook pro didnt show any charging problems so i brought it home to charge.
Now it has the same charging problem as before...

Do you have another power adapter to try? If so, can you use the power adapter that came with this mac?
Do you have another MBP? If so can you use this power adapter on that MBP?
Are you using another pointing device or is it the one built right into the laptop? If you are using another pointing device try purchasing a new one or disconnecting or reconnecting or even try on another computer.
You might be only able to get buy for the next few month until you graduate until you can get your computer fixed. If all else fails go buy yourself a $8 mouse from a place, it will work until you can get this fixed... or buy apple mice if that is a big deal to you.
Here is one for only 3.18! http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Gear+Head-Computer+-+OM3800U+Mouse/3933383.p?id=1218 443155891&skuId=3933383
Or if you want the one I have used: (M515 @ home or HP Wired Mouse-- Its kind of old) This isn't the exact one but they discontinued that one: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/mice-pointers/mice/devices/mouse-m100 so for $10 you get a mouse and your computer works.

  • My MacBook pro wont wake up from sleep. The screen is blank at all times, but I can hear the fan for 5 sec then everything stops. Please help! I don't kno what to do.

My MacBook pro is about 3 yrs old. It is a 2008 model right before the new design came out. Recently I closed it up which puts it to sleep and a couple minutes later when I opened it up the screen stayed blank but could hear the fan running but then the power clicked like it was shutting down and I could hear nothing more. My power supply is working and I have already tried resetting it. Can anyone help me? I don't live exactly near a Mac store to get help.

Before resorting to an LB change-out, try this, as it has fixed many of the "silver-key" Macbook Pros with wake-from-sleep issues:
    1) To get the computer running, do an SMC reset. Instructions here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Your MBP model uses the first option under the subhead, "Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)"
    2) If you get it running, go to System Preferences > Network and select your Airport connection
    3) In the result main pane, click the "Advanced..." button.
    4) You should be looking at a window with multiple tabs at the top; the "Airport" tab (far left) should be active---if not, make it so.
    5) There is a panel showing "Prefered Networks." Use the "minus" button below that window to eliminate any networks that you don't need to access on more than a weekly basis. I'm down to two: the home Airport Extreme Base Station and the network for a museum at which I volunteer once a week.
    5) Click "OK" and close System Preferences.
Now try letting it sleep and see it if wakes up.
When this happened to my Late 2007 MBP, I used Console to read system.log and found that, on waking, the compuer was looking for the wireless network at a lodge where I'd stayed weeks earlier and miles away. Clear the morass of old networks and keeping the list short has completely cured my wake-from-sleep issues.
The steps I listed take less time to do than to read, and are within the ability even of novice Mac users.
If that doesn't work, you may need to seek professional help. If you take it to an Apple Store and they recommend a logic board replacement, ask about a "Depot Repair." Instead of replacing the logic board on-site (which will whack you to the tune of US$700-1100), they send the computer to a central Apple refurb facility that fixes whatever they find wrong for a flat fee of about US$315 (last time someone reported using the service here). Turnaround is about one working week, and people who have taken of this service have reported being very pleased with the outcome.
You don't show a geographic location. This service may not be available if you are outside North America.

    The MacBook Pro 2,2 is a 15" Core 2 Duo from Octomer 2006-June 2007
It only has a mere 1.5 Gbps SATA 1 connection which won't realize the performance of the SSD which is better suited to a SATA 3 connection at 6Gbps. So basically you put a Ferrari engine into a Yugo.
My advice is to return the SSD and get a 7,200 RPM hard drive, is backwards compatible with your older SATA 1 connections and also provide more storage space and speed you require for that machine which has a maximum RAM limit of 3GB (4GB has to be installed, 2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM modules in two slots, see OtherWorld Computing or Crucial.com for Mac verified memory)
What occurs with that model is there is a lot of memory swapping to the drive due to the 32 bit processor and it's 3GB RAM limit, so your thinking a SSD would speed things up is correct, however your SATA 1 connection is the bottleneck.
So your resigned to using a 7,200 RPM hard drive which will give the same performance as the SSD in your case due to the slower SATA 1, it's the best you can do.
Also, older OS X operating systems 10.6 and earlier have trouble installing on with SSD's a it's a new storage device, there is supposedly some more hoops to go through to enable TRIM etc. as the installer doesn't know what it's looking at when it see's a SSD, but it does with a hard drive.
For that machine, even though OS X 10.8 can be eventually installed on it, it's not advised due to it's vintage age and slower CPU and graphics capability. 10.7 and 10.8 are bloated for newer mor powerful machines, thus it's only going to be a wasted effort and costly for a machine about to die shortly.
For the best OS on that machine (with current security updates) would be OS X Snow Leopard, which you can get the $20 or so OS X 10.6. white retail disk still from Apple online store.
    Read:

    Why is my computer slow?
IMMO a 7,200 hard drive and 10.6 updated to 10.6.8 is the best, most cost effective solution as something else is going to croak on the machine in the new few years.
10.8 will let you run iCloud etc., however the machine will be so slow and you will have to buy all new versions of software for a machine that's only going to expire shortly.
Run 10.6.8 on that machine for the next few years until the wheels fall off, Apple has got your back with security updates still until it drops to like below 10% OS X market share.
If you require to run iCloud etc., then buy a new machine for that, don't waste your effort going to 10.8 on the older machine, use it for backup purposes.

  • My MacBook Pro died suddenly when I was removing a flash drive (LG up3 neon ps4) and is now both unresponsive and unchargable. Is there anything I can do to fix it on my own? (There aren't any apple stores in my current country)

My MacBook Pro died suddenly when I was removing a flash drive (LG up3 neon ps4) and is now both unresponsive and cannot be charged. Troubleshooting.... Is there anything I can do to fix it on my own? (There aren't any apple stores in my current country)

    Hello antol1n1,
Sorry to hear your MacBook Pro is not charging or powering on.  Sometimes a System Management Controller reset can help with the following charging and power issues:
    Power
The computer doesn't respond to the power button when pressed.
A portable Mac doesn't appear to respond properly when you close or open the lid.
The computer sleeps or shuts down unexpectedly.
The battery does not appear to be charging properly.
The MagSafe power adaptor LED doesn't appear to indicate the correct activity.
To reset the System Management Controller on your MacBook Pro (with a built-in battery) , you can follow these steps:
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
You can find more information in the full article here:

    I hope this helps!

macbook pro turns off when i unpliug

You either need to plug in your charger and if that isn't working if your machine is less than a year old take it in to your nearst Apple Store and let them deal with it. Or if you are out of warrantee you will need to get a new battery for your Mac

  • I have a 16GB iPhone 3GS. Tried synching my phone through iTunes (11.0.1 I think... on a 2009 Macbook Pro). Now when I connect to iTunes, it says it does not recognise the content on my phone. Is this because my phone (and laptop) are too old?

I have a 16GB iPhone 3GS. Tried synching my phone through iTunes (11.0.1 I think... on a 2009 Macbook Pro). Now when I connect to iTunes, it says it does not recognise the content on my phone. Is this because my phone (and laptop) are too old?
Also, when I tried to Restore the settings, an Error Message pops up that says " The iPhone software update server could not be contacted. The requested resource was not found.
I'm trying to free up space on my phone by removing [literally] thousands of old photos which were originally synched to the phone, because I had forgotten to uncheck the photos button when I synched it ages ago.
I have also tried synching it on my 24" iMac (running OSX Snow Leopard). But again, when I try restoring the phone through itunes, it says the file is corrupted. It sggests unplugging the device, and then plugging it in again. I have done this numerous times with no success.
I'm guessing it must be because my phone (and versions of iTunes, and OSX) are all too old.
    Please can anybody help.
    Cheers,
    Dan_nz.
