How to install Snow Leopard on Macbook Pro? keep getting msg- cannot install Internal HD is used for Time Machine- this was reset to external HD and still get msg?
At some point, your internal HD was selected for use as Time Machine backups, and a Backups.backupdb folder was created at the top level. So OSX thinks you're trying to install it on the same drive as your backups.
Open your internal HD with the Finder (you won't find it via a Spotlight or Finder search) and delete that folder. -
MacBook Pro Hanging, losing cursor, spinning wheel
Hi all:
I have been experiencing some strange behavior on my ca. March 2006 MacBook Pro for the past couple of weeks and have not been able to locate any discussions of similar issues so I am posting this message. I will try to explain the problem as well as I can.
For some unknown reason, my computer will suddenly go into a state where the cursor disappears and the little wheel that usually appears when the computer is shutting down or starting up appears in the lower part of the screen. The computer is unresponsive - I cannot access anything, the clock is frozen, etc. The screen will dim after a few minutes, but the computer remains unresponsive for up to 25 minutes (that's the longest I have waited for something to happen). If I close the lid to put the computer to sleep, it will go to sleep (although it seems to take a bit longer to go to sleep than it does when it is behaving normally) but when I open it up, the screen is dark and when I try to wake it (e.g., by pressing keys on the keyboard) the computer restarts. I can also force quit the computer when it is in this state by pressing the power button.
This seems to occur when using Mail or Safari. I have not noted the behavior with other programs. That may only be because I use Mail and Safari most frequently. There does not seem to be any pattern to this behavior, although it does seem to occur when I first start up the programs, but not always.
Thus far, I have done most of the recommended voodoo: repaired permissions and repaired the drive using Disk Utility, and reinstalled OS 10.4.6 using the Combo updater. FWIW, when I repair permissions I get Java permissions errors but I don't know if that is relevant or not.
This seems like it may be a memory-related error. I have Apple memory installed but that doesn't mean it may not be going bad. However, that is purely speculation on my part and I would appreciate any insight from folks on these discussion lists.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Bob Q.Hi Bob Q.
You are not alone with your experience of a 'momentary disappearing cursor'. I generally find that if I move the cursor and it does not immediately appear on the screen, waiting a couple seconds and slowly moving the mouse from side to side will soon reveal its location.
The disappearing cursor phenomena is an annoyance which I attribute to Snow Leopard. I have not performed as thorough an analysis as you in linking its occurrence with the use of particular applications but now I am aware of your observation I will commence looking for patterns too.
My own observation has been that the disappearing cursor phenomena is intermittent in nature and apparently random, in other words I haven't established any links of my own.
I have not encountered any strange behaviour with the 'spinning ball' cursor. If I had I might begin to suspect the cursor routines within Snow Leopard as being the most likely cause.
For now I will monitor cursor behaviour and report back if I manage to establish any links.

I've recently upgraded my iPad to OS 5 and I am running iTunes 10 on my MacBook Pro. For some unexplainable reason, I'm now getting a message that items (mainly TV shows I've purchased through iTunes) are not able to be downloaded because the computer is "not authorized." But the computer IS authorized. I follow the instructions to "authorize" it and, of course, I'm then told that the computer is already authorized! Still, the downloads won't sync.
Can anyone help me out with this?I have the same problem. It is only with tv shows and only with programs I have downloaded after the software update.
Apple support sent me the above link too....but it doesn't solve the problem...my computer is authorized and the content is in my library and will play on my Mac air, but it will not sync the tv shows, it keeps saying my computer isn't authorized for it.
No answers here, but you are definitely not alone with this issue. -
Macbook Pro running VERY slow- spinning wheel of death
My 4 year old MacBook Pro has been running very very slow for quite some time and I'm fed up enough to ask for some suggestions. Upon reading some forums, I was advised to download EtreCheck... here are my results. Some things are in red and look bad, I'm just not sure how to decipher this report. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Help! Macbook Pro stuck with the spinning wheel after Migration Assistant froze.
I have a Macbook Pro and a Mac Mini both running OSX (latest version). I was trying to the do the Migration Assistant and it froze on the Macbook Pro and I can't even shut off my laptop. Any tips would be wonderful!!
If it was purchased brand new then it's running a version of Lion, so to reinstall Lion:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button. -
Everytime i turn my computer on it stays stuck on the apple with the spinning wheel
You likely have a failing drive or some sort of network issue that's delaying the operating system so it's showing the spinning beach ball while it waits.
It's likely a very serious problem you will need to address.
1: Determine your users files if they are backed up off the machine or not as those are not replaceable, OS X and programs are.
This is your options if the machine or drive is dead.
My computer is not working, is my personal data lost?
This is your possible recovery option
.Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
2: Hold the Shift key down on a wired or built in keyboard for Safe Mode, this disables some things hopefully to get you in and do manual backups to a external storage drive (do not use or only trust TimeMachine as it has been known to restore corrupted data or not at all)
Most commonly used backup methods
3: Once your data is off the boot drive you can run through the Steps to determine if it's a hardware issue (Hardware Test, Disk Utiltiy check), then run through possible software issues. Or if it's a network issue.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Diagnosing network issues
4: Sometimes a almost 100% filled boot drive will cause the issues your seeing as the computer is trying to find space for swap memory and can't locate anymore.
This can assist if you can get into the machine to see what your drive space or other slowdown issues, then off load large files like Movies or Pictures to a external drive and reboot.
Why is my computer slow?
5: If it's a hardware issue then you can have the drive replaced (if it's that) or take it into Apple for a free evaluation.
Install/upgrade RAM or storage drive in Mac's
If you need more assistant see if any of these tips can assist.

I installed indesign CS5 on new macbook pro and keeps freezing with spinning wheel once the app opens. Is there an issue with OS Mav or font issue or a plist I can pull. All other Adobe products work.
Migration should never be done with any Adobe program.
If you have done Migration, you have to UNINSTALL first (if even possible) and then download Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool and run that also. When this is done, restart your computer and install the programs from an original Adobe Installer.
Other question is, if your OS is supporting that version. You can try it, it is not officially supported, but it might work.
But CC will work, upgrade to CC2014 (without additional cost), use that as it is better anyway. -
Trouble with slow Macbook Air. I have first generation MacBook Air and have a hard time keeping hard drive from being full. After trashing many docs, I have almost 5 gigs available, but mac is slow and I keep getting color wheel when I use Mail. I'd like to install Lion, but now I'm afraid it will slow down my machine even further. Do I have enough free hard disc space? Is Mail problem related to free hard disc space? Thanks for your help!
7gb of free disc space is required to install Lion. Read this about how to free up disc space: http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html. Also, advice on how to speed up your mac: http://www.maclife.com/article/feature/25_ways_speed_your_mac

Hi, I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro but cant get the mirroring function to work with Apple TV. I've got the most recent Software 10.7.5 but cant see the mirroring icon or turn this on. I'm able to mirror from my Ipad but not my Mac, any thoughts?
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
AirPlay Mirroring is supported on your Mac, but it needs OS X Mountain Lion (10.8). See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404
You have two possibilities:
1. Make a backup, open App Store and purchase Mountain Lion to upgrade to this OS X. Then, you will find the AirPlay Mirroring icon at the top right of the display, on the menu bar, or on System Preferences > Displays.
2. Keep OS X Lion and use AirParrot > http://www.airparrot.com
Both options work properly, but I recommend AirPlay Mirroring as it doesn't need a third-party program -
Macbook Pro Retina 13" Gets Very Hot
Hi, I noticed my Macbook Pro Retina 13" gets very hot after 30 minutes of usage, practically "burning" on my thigh (it left burning mark a few times actually, especially in the summer). I usually put a book between the laptop and me to prevent the heat. Is there a better way?
What are you doing on your MacBook when it gets hot? I have a retina and it gets hot when I play games like Team Fortress 2 or Garry's Mod, watching videos on youtube, and using the iTunes visualizer. What's odd is it doesn't get hot when I watch movies on iTunes. If it's getting hot just sitting around, you may have a problem that needs to be check out as soon as possible. I had a 13" mid 2012 non-retina pro that had three logic boards replaced in less than a year of purchase. Every time the board was failing, it would freeze sometime after it was put to sleep and it would get really hot and the fan would be screaming trying to keep up. Then it would freeze as I'm using it. The screen would flash pixels of all colors in random spots all around the screen. If Apple didn't cover the repairs, I would have paid $530 per repair.

My Macbook pro won't get passed the grey startup screen
My apple macbook pro is not getting passed the gray screen with the apple and spinning circle. I have tried pressing comand-R or shift-command-v, and nothing happens what so ever. I listened to my hard drive, and it sounds fine. It sounds like it is running, and there is no clicking sounds from it or anything, and haven't been any at all. Nothing seems to make it respond
