Macbook Pro Sluggish:  RAM or Processor?

Hi,
I have an early 2011 13" Macbook Pro with the i5 2.3GHZ processor, 4GB memory and 500GB 5400-rpm SATA HD.  I'm running Lion OSX 10.7.4 and have a 24" external monitor (samsung) that I use as my primary screen.  My work involves a lot of data analysis within excel/R and simultaneously use a variety of other apps (Skype, Omifocus, Mail, iTunes, Adobe Illustrator, Dropbox Toggl and a few other menu-bar/background apps to help manage my workflow).   Now I understand I can't be firing away at everything at once but where I'm encountering unbearably slow performance and lagging are in the following areas:
* Large data table processing (commonly in excess of 250k rows) within excel
* Simulatneously using Excel, Mail, Skype and Omnifocus then trying to open another program
* Random other instances of multiple program use
My question is, how can I tell if my RAM or processor is at fault?  I've done some research around the Page In/Page out but I'm not 100% sure if it tells the whole story.
Bottom line is I ordered a RAM upgrage 16GB since it was less than $200 from crucial.com but I'm wondering if I need to invest in a new iMac or Macbook pro with a faster processor, SSHD and 16GB of RAM.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Your macbook is fine.  The reason you're having issues is because you only have 4GB of RAM have several apps running in the background.
Once your new RAM is installed, you'll see quite a difference in how your macbook handles multiple apps running at the same time.
No need to buy a new one since the one you have is still considered fairly new.
Add your RAM and enjoy your macbook.  I'm sure you'll enjoy it for years to come, especially when you get your new RAM installed.

Can I put my stock early 2011 mbp's ram into a mid 2011 macbook air?

No. The MacBook Air's RAM isn't upgradable, except when configuring a model in the online Apple Store.

will i have any problem like compatibility??
    thank you.

A Mid 2010 MacBook Pro supports 16 GB of memory without any problem. Macs are "special" about memory because some brands work without any problem and others don't work. That's why I recommend you to buy the memory from OWC or Crucial in order to make sure that you get compatible memory > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3

I was told I can update to Snow Leopard without adding RAM but just read on another discussion thread that someone with the same age Macbook Pro that I have was told to purchase more RAM then update to SL.

Then it either is a pirate clone or you are misinformed.
Apple Computer has never used AMD processors in its products.
However, the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is a Radeon unit, which is an AMD subsidiary. Parallels, VMWare, VirtualBox will all work fine with the Intel Core i7 or i5 CPU that powers the Mac, and use the AMD Radeon GPU that drives the displays.

  • Problem on Macbook Pro (16GB RAM, i7) with large video files

    Hallo,
I have a recurring problem working with Premiere Pro CS6 on a new Macbook. THe Macbook has16GM RAM, i7 processor and I have the video files on my internal disc. THere is enaough space on the disk, aprox 250 GB free.
I have a Canon Legria HF28. After loading the videos from the camara it's .MOV files. When I have files about 1 GB it seems to work fine. But if I have a large file, e.g. 1 hour HD video in 3,5 GB size, it loads the video, but the playback and any kind of edits does not work properly. Sometimes I am able to start the video, but it stops after a few minutes and I can't rewind or move forward. In the most cases Adobe Premiere crashes. But also restart or opening in new projects does not help. I wonder if somebody has similar problems. My understanding is, that I have enought RAM, and fast processor, that it should actually work fine. The video files are OK. As they run in Quicktime with no problem. Also moving back and forth in the video is fine in a simple player, but not in Premiere.
Any ideas? And thank you for your help in advance.
    Thomas

My 2011 MBP can take 16 GB RAM.  macsales.com sells the 16 GB kit for $160 currently.  Apple tests against the more commonly available RAM types when publishing hardware limits, so only reports 8 GB as a maximum.
8 GB RAM is abut $50 through macsales.com, so buy the default 4 GB regardless of where you decide to go.

  • Macbook Pro 16gb ram upgradability

I'm looking into buying a Macbook pro and was planning on buying the non-retina display version. This laptop will primarily be used for school work, iTunes, video streaming, Photoshop, lightroom, aperture, and whatnot. Now i plan on buying the 2.6gh version, but Im wondering if the 8gb of ram it comes with is enough. I also heard somewhere that it would be recognized and wouldn't make a difference if i upgraded it to 16gb.
I would've liked to go with the new retina display model, but i can only afford the lower entrance model with the 2.3 processor, and i'm not sure if this would work for my needs.

  • Occasional restarts on mid 2012 macbook pro after ram install?

    Hi,
Recently installed 2x4gb Corsair Vengeance DDR3 memory to my mid 2012 Macbook Pro 13" to upgrade the ram to 8GB.
Since then i have been having almost daily forced restarts, where it says it has to restart because of a problem, i believe it
    is a kernel problem.
Also have been experiencing many repeated "Aw Snap" messages on Google Chrome although this could be unrelated.
The specifications for my mac are:
    OSX Mavericks 10.9.2
Processor: 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics:  Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB
Has anyone had any problem with this type of memory? I believed it would work when i bought it.
Original memory was 4GB that came installed in the Macbook Pro.
Other than occasional restarts, everything seems to work fine other than "aw snap" messages on latest version
of chrome (have tried disabling extensions, making a new user profile, reinstalling Chrome, none of which has worked).
Would appreciate any help, advise etc. Will be reinstalling original memory, see if the problem persist.
    Cheers
    Tom

The RAM must be stated by the manufacturer to be compatible with a mid-2012 MacBook Pro.
    Just because it says:
    1600 MHz PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM SO-DIMMs (204-pin)
Does not mean it is compatible.  It must say mid-2012 MacBook Pro RAM.

  • Early 2008 Macbook Pro - Bad RAM or Bad Slot(s)?

Firstly, allow me to apologize for any formatting errors on this post; I'm putting it together from my phone. I comprised a collection of photos and screen shots to aid in my plea, but I can't find a way to upload them from here. So I'll do my best to explain things colorfully. :)
    Specs:
    Early 2008 15" Macbook Pro
    Model #: A1260
    OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.Something.
Recently upgraded hard drive from stock 250GB to Seagate Momentus 500 GB.
Strange, multicolored split-second glitches have occurred three times the past two days.
This morning, my computer booted to the gray screen, as normal. Apple logo and spinning logo appeared.
Here's the issue: there is a vertical gray strip going straight through the middle of the monitor that cuts through part of the apple and half of the spinning wheel.
System stays on that screen for a few seconds, then reboots. Every time. Resetting PRAM/NVAM does nothing.
The RAM is stock. I've done the following:
RAM stick A in bottom slot - 3 beeps and no start-up.
RAM stick A in top slot - gray screen, apple & rotating logos, vertical gray line, restarts.
RAM stick B in bottom slot - 3 beeps and no start-up.
RAM stick B in top slot -  gray screen, apple & rotating logos, vertical gray line, restarts.
    Bad RAM or bad slots?
    Thank you!
    JS

    IT LIVES!!!!!!
I reset the PRAM & SMC a few times. It froze on this screen when the progress bar got about halfway.
Then this... I left it on this screen for a while, then restarted. AND IT BOOTED LIKE NORMAL!

  • Please update the specs for the MacBook Pro - 8GB RAM Max

    Hello,
Someone needs to upgrade the specifications for the MacBook Pro now that 4GB laptop SoDIMMs are shipping and compatible with the MacBook Pro.
See my blogpost on the subject at http://blogs.technet.com/keithcombs/archive/2008/07/05/testing-my-apple-macbook- pro-with-8gb-of-ram.aspx.
    Thanks,
    Keith Combs
    Microsoft

    Hello again,
Regarding having them update the specs, one can dream. Dreams are free. LOL. Hopefully the memory makers will update their specs as more makers start supporting a large memory configuration.
The 4GB sticks I am using are http://shop.kingston.com/partsinfo.asp?ktcpartno=KTL-TP667/4G
I did not do an extended test of the sticks in my MBP. Their home is in the ThinkPad I have because it is running Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V.
As you can see from the link above, these little suckers are pricey. But consider the price of 2GB SoDIMMs were $950 when they entered the market a couple of years ago. The price will drop.
I asked the Kingston rep that sent these to me if online sites like newegg.com would have them soon. She indicated no, but the corporate buying sites like CDW and Zone would. So check around. They just started shipped a couple of weeks ago so be patient.
If you have any other questions, please stop by http://blogs.technet.com/keithcombs/archive/2008/07/05/testing-my-apple-macbook- pro-with-8gb-of-ram.aspx and ask there. I'll see them much more quickly.
    Cheers,

  • Macbook Pro w/retina & Haswell Processor Upgrade

I would be stoked if this was available to save on batter life, Will the macbook pro (mid 2013) be upgradable to the new intel haswell processor, if at anytime?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you already have the MacBook and you want to upgrade it to a Haswell processor, you can't. The processor is soldered to the logic board in the case of the MacBook Pro with Retina display, so you can't replace it without replacing the logic board. Also, note that OS X may not support the processor you put.
Respecting to a future MacBook Pro with Haswell processor, the last MacBook Pro upgrade was in June 2012 and it hasn't been updated yet, but Apple has always released at least one new MacBook Pro per year. This doesn't mean that this year a MacBook Pro with Haswell processor will be available

  • Why does my 2012 macbook pro 4gb ram run slow sometimes?

I've purchased my 2012 4gb ram Macbook ram w/ 500 gb hard drive around September. It started off extremely fast the first 4 months (when I had mavericks), but there we're problems with the Video playback towards the last 4 months (It would Freeze and unfreeze & the the audio-video sync would be way off after 30 mins of netflix, which would cause the whole computer to slow down). So, I installed the Yosemite update, which made it even worse to the point where my macbook was unusable. With yosemite, I'd have an average of 500mb ram free memory available, sometimes even lower. Now, I did a manual restore to OS X 10.8.5 Mountain Lion, and I see the major difference in speed.  I could use safari now & get an average of 1.47 gb of free ram available (with just the safari application open). Now, the video playback issue still occurs sometimes & having about 4 programs open does make the computer slower than usual, but not as often. I'm hoping this is just a ram issue, becuase I'm expecting on upgrading my ram to a 16gb ram or higher while still on Mountain Lion just to be able to run Logic Pro & Adobe Premiere in the near future. If its not a ram issue which is causing this problem on my macbook, I'd be ****** because I'd be spending almost $200 on a ram upgrade and it not resolving this issue would kill me. Could someone help? Ill even take a Diagnose test like Etrecheck if you need me to. Thanks.

Hello, you had me lost on what you explained. But, here's my Etrecheck report. Thanks.

  • 64-bit or 32-bit for the 2011 (spring) Macbook Pro 8 RAM 500HD?

I wanted to know the differences between 64 bit and 32 bit OSx I am currently running the latest Lion 10.7.3 on a 2011 spring macbook pro with 8 gigs of ram 500 gigs HD. From what I can read in the info it looks like it defaults to 32 bit automatically but I was told that I can hold down the 6 and 4 keys during startup to start with 64 bit. I would just like to know anyones experiences and what software it works better with. I usually run Adobe CS5.5 and it would be great to find out 64 bit will give it a boost. Please list pros and cons you know of..
    Thanks..
    Pete

It should be running 64-bit on its own with Lion. My 2007 MBP began running full 64-bit after I installed Lion.
Run the Activity monitor and see what the kernel is using. It should show 64-bit.

The Retina models can not have their RAM upgraded. It is permanently soldered to the main-board.
