Macbook Pro SMC update 1.3 will not install

Greetings,
I am having problems getting the latest SMC update to install on my 15" Macbook pro. My built in drive has a boot camp partition, so I understand if the update won't install using that. But When booting off freshly GUID partitioned and HFS+(journaled) formatted Firewire 400 drive (Leopard installed and updated to 10.5.7) SMC 1.3 update will not install and gives same error "Your firmware can not be updated because the hard drive partition scheme may not be supported. You must be booted from a GUID partition or RAID scheme." Huh?
I tried the update pushed down by software update, and a manual download.
Current SMC version showing in system profiler as 1.16f10
Anyone else experience this or have any suggestions?

"...hit the hardware start button, get gong, machine starts to boot, something briefly flashes on the screen"
Hi Bob, you have to hold down the start button(5-10secs) until you hear a long tone. Then let go and everything is ok.
You'll also see the progress bar install the update, that is what the brief flash was but because the button wasn't held for a few seconds, it didn't take.

  • Macbook efi firmware update 1.1 will not install

When I check for software updates, there is an update that is labeled "Macbook EFI firmware update 1.1", I click on the button to install it, a message is displayed that the update was installed successfuly, I click on the "OK" button, it checks for updates again a message is displayed that "Your software is up to date". When I click on the "Quit" button a Windows opens displaying a message about the firmware update and I have to click on the "Shut down" button. The system shuts down, when I turn it back on and check for software updates again the "Macbook EFI firmware update 1.1" is listed again, I have been through this 3 times, it says it installs but when I check again it still shows up as an update that needs to be installed and the firmware version has not changed as is should if the update did in fact install, what am I missing???

Firmware update 1.1 is a very old update for 10.4 http://support.apple.com/kb/DL207 I have no idea why it would be showing up on your MacBook.

  • MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.0 will not install.

    Hi
The latest MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.0 will not install.
It runs and I restart my Mac but when I search for more updates it appears as a required update again.
Anyone know why this may be?

I had the same problem today. I called Apple support who transferred me to second level support and no resolution. I decided to try a combination of the items I have seen below.
I restarted my computer. I went to apple support download and downloaded the software EFI firmware update 2.0 by typing in search window. I made sure the power cord was pulled into the wall and the laptop had a FULL charge. I installed the update and the computer restarted.
I went to check the software update window after the update and restart completed and SUCCESSFUL.
I do not know why the Genius Bar or the second level support could not resolve my issues but, by me reading information here I hope at least this issue is resolved.
    Thanks ALL.......... Happy Mac ing

My MacBook Pro (OS 10.7.2) will not load some sellers websites that bounce through yahoo.  Other Macs on same network work fine.  I have reset Safari, tried other browsers, eliminated cookies..... to no avail.  All computers running 10.7.2.  I have reset Safari, tried other browsers, trashed out cookies.  This has me baffled.  My other macs running the same OS version work fine.  Flash is up to date and have done the current software update.  Any help please.  I have not blocked any sites and am administator for all machines.  I have tried signing in as Guest.  Nothing works.

After searching other users questions with related problem, I found that VirusBarrier 6 was the issue.  Reconfigured settings there and problem solved.

  • MacBook Pro SMC Update 1.6 - Freeze

    Hi all,
    Facts:
    model: MacBookPro8,1
    OS: OS X 10.7.5
    Story:
i got a Macbook Pro 8,1 (13,3" Early 2011) which worked flawlessly - until yesterday.
Yesterday I decided to install the MacBook Pro SMC Update 1.6 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1626) - a bit unusual for me, since i normally wait a few weeks until others tried such an update. I did nothing in parallel on my mac, just the update. After the installation process i rebooted my system to finish the update process, the scm update installation run, everything seemed to went fine.
But shortly after the login process, my System froze and i had to hard shutdown my macbook. The first 3 or 4 attempts to only switch on my computer i got only a flashing indicator led, as usual, but not display output, no start sound, nothing. I waited a few minutes, tried again, the system started to boot until the login window, but i had no time to input my credentials - the system froze again.
Since a got a bit computer experience, it's my day job, i first thought of a bad RAM. So i replaced it with two totally new ones (Corsair Mac Memory) and some older original Apple RAM, but nothing changed. I did the same with the harddisk, even i don't think it's related to a harddrive failure because of the symptoms, while trying to install a fresh OS - the system froze again.
After that i tried everything Apple proposed: SMC reset multiple times, NVRAM/PRAM reset multiple times, but nothing helped in my case.
So the current state is as follows:
    - The system freezes everytime, sometimes earlier, sometimes later. But normally within 10 seconds. (I observed, the longer the computer stays off, the later the freeze appears). After a hard shutdown, i've to wait a few minutes to get the computer to display anything.
    - I read the log files after installing the harddrive to another computer (it works fine there), but there seems nothing special (i could post it, if somebody need it). The system just stops responding.
I think, it MUST be related to the MacBook Pro SMC Update 1.6, because i had no problems at all before this firmware update, problems started after it.
Is anybody out there, who has another suggestion for me, or has the same symptoms?
    G,
    NoWay

I have MacBook Pro 13" (mid 2010) and similar problem (gray screen, system not start, noisy fan, etc.)
I applied last SMC firmware update 1.6
as a result I have unworking MacBook Pro.
When I have been looking table http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237 I am realised that link http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1626 on update for MacBookPro8,1 1.68f99 (SMC 1.6) and for MacBookPro7,1 1.62f7 (SMC 1.6)  is same. And then I booted from Installation Disk1 with 10.6.4 and saw that my version of SMC is 1.68f99 instead 1.62f7.
In my opinion it's the main reason of our common problem. Apple released not correct SMC update and this update made briks from our MacBook Pro!!!

My Macbook Pro keyboard and USB keyboard will not work.  However, the trackpad and USB mouse will work.  Any help?
This is quite frustrating, since it randomly occured as I was browsing the web.  It seemed to happen out of nowhere.  I cannot login to my user account because I cannot type my password.
    Any help will be appreciated.

If you have another Mac, boot the non-working one into Target Disk Mode (holding down "T" at startup). Hook up the two Macs via a Firewire cable. The non-working one will mount on the other Mac as an external Firewire HD.
Next, download the 10.5.6 Combo update from here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1056comboupdate .html
Run it. When it asks you for a destination, choose the other Mac that was mounted via Firewire. When it's done, unmount the computer and restart it. The keyboard and mouse should work now.

I assume that you have installed new RAM in your MBP.
It would be helpful if you indicated the EXACT model/year MBP that you have.
What the the RAM specifications that you are trying to install?
    Ciao.

  • (MacBook pro 8,1)  Firmware password will not reset. Resetting PRAM fails.

(MacBook pro 8,1)  Firmware password will not reset. Resetting PRAM fails. Resetting NVRAM in Open Firmware fails. Resetting PMU fails. Any suggestions?

Not trying to circumvent any feature or security of the hardware. I am the owner of the hardware, I know the current  firmware password. I am simply trying to turn off my current firmware password so that I may reset the PRAM to fix a failed OS install. The instructions to turn off the current firmware password should also include having to enter in the current firmware password as done on previous models with the boot CD. This feature was made available to all models because it is a security must have and it abides by industry-standard security procedures as stated in HIPPA and other ISO standards.

  • MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1 Refuses to Install

Ok well I have a very annoying problem. Since the 18th, I've been getting daily notices about the MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1 thing, and daily I have been saying "OK, go ahead and interrupt what I'm doing, install it and then leave me alone." And then the next day, I get yet another message saying i need to install it.
Needless to say, this is highly annoying. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm getting the same behavior. I'm not sure but I think this may be related to whether the FIRST time you encounter this update, you opt to restart later rather than right away. Perhaps you can verify whether this was the approach you took as well. In any event, no number of restarts now of my MacBook Pro with 10.5.1 will prevent me from getting yet another message that the MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1 is waiting to be downloaded and installed.
I assume Leopard has left largely unchanged the practice of placing a record of updates in its /Library/Receipts directory. If the properties of this directory change, such that it prevents it from being updated, this could lead Apple's "Software Update" utility to think software has never been installed when perhaps it has been installed after all.
I would consider also that perhaps the SoftwareUpdate.plist file may be questionable. I notice that while almost all other plist files in /Library/Preferences list "root" as the owner, the SoftwareUpdate.plist lists my own user name as the owner.
I think commands such as chown and chmod may become our best friend where this apparent bug is concerned; but I recognize that all the foregoing speculation on my part is a longshot.
I welcome the comments of others who encounter this behavior.

  • Officejet Pro 8600 N911g new firmware will not install.

My printer: Officejet Pro 8600 N911g
    Current Firmware: CLP1CN1416AR
My problem: Downloaded the latest firmware update (Version CLP1CN1322CR). When I go to install it, my printer shows as listed, but in the STATUS cloumn, it is listed as "Not applicable".
    I turned my printer on/off.
I tried updating via network, and when it checks for an update, it states there are no updates avaiable.
    I tried updating via USB.
I tried updating via the LCD panel on the printer, and when it checks for an update, it states there are no updates avaiable.
Is there something wrong as to why this current firmware will not install?
    Thanks for any help.

New Firmware (CLP1CN1416R) was installed automatically (Printer was set for "Auto Update").  Prior to new firmware install,  printer has performed flawlessly...no problems.  Immediately after printer updated it's firmware automatically I began to have multiple problems.
First, it kept asking me to perform an "Alignment" which I dutifully performed only to have message come back that 'Alignment Failed".  Printed sheet looked fine, and printer printed fine but now before any page will print the "Alignment Recommended" message comes up which I have to then override (Click 'Do Not Align' button at bottome of 'Alignment Recommended' message box.  This is getting really OLD!!  Simply unacceptable for a business class printer!!
Also, the printer randomly has started giving other messages such as "There is a problem with the printer or ink system" AND "Cartridges are Missing" ("when I've just recently put in new catridges and levels are OK!!) AND "Paper Jam" (when there is no jam!!)
None of these problems have occurred prior to the automatic firmware update.  I believe the reason HP hasn't posted the new firmware update to their Customer Service website is that they know there are bugs in it and don't want to compound the problems the new version has already created.  I seriously question why an automatic updating of firmware was done with equipment set to "Auto Update" and yet that same new firmware is not available to those who might have had their printers set for "Manual Update".
HP Customer Service - You need to issue a statement from the company as to what has happened with this firmware update.  If there are problems, take responsibility for it and make it right.  HP knows who it sent out auto updates to.  These printer owners should be immediately notified and the situation made right.  It is not real assuring to have your front line staff not know why the new firmware is not on the website.  I do not like the idea of having to pay for a Support Call when the problems with my out of warranty printer are directly tied to the Auto Updating of said printer with apparently defective firmware.
I'd really appreciate a response back from someone in HP Customer Service.

How can I ignore an update for Keynote that will not install? I also have an update for my printer that I have installed 4 times but it still shows as needing to be installed?

Try hiding the Keynote app in the Trash where the Mac App Store can't see it. Then try to redownload it from your Purchases list. You should get the most recent version available.
